PSA: ABOUT TANUKIS

-They are NOT! Raccoons/Trash Pandas

-Yes They share a mask like a raccoon, Yes they have Raccoon’s in their name like a normal one but they are NOT Raccoon’s -Its like calling apple’s oranges because they grow on tress and they are fruit sorry but no.

-Tanuki’s/ Japanese Raccoon are Canine, (dog family) But they are not dogs, so what are they more like? Foxes, yup Tanukis a more closely related to a fox than a Raccoon.  Source Source2 Source3

-Btw The Mythological Tanuki’s you know the ones with the magic balls like from Pom Poko, they still are the normal “real” tanuki’s/ Raccoon dogs. just Ones Magical and ones a non magical fluff ball.

- Also calling out the artists out there who probably don’t know this BUT, yeah tanuki’s do NOT have ring tails like a raccoon does, i mean you can keep it if its a style  thing or apart of your character or someone else character or if they are a hybrid of a tanuki and a raccoon sure but 100%

- Other tips to tell a tanuki from a raccoon, the sounds they makes Tanuki’s go AWOO (sometimes moo) while Raccoons goes chitter samples.

Made this thing because it HURTS to see people call, or draw Tanuki’s as Trash Pandas yet they are not the same despite the name and (Barely) the looks.

Also there was a much better Tumblr post but i guess its MIA ;3; but ill do mines for now to spread the proper info.

Plus i mean come on guys just google search up the info and looks for Tanukis and raccoons >~> its not that troubling.
