Don’t Give Up on Me Chapter 4
One Month (Chapter 4)
Words: 2.4k (including lyrics) Pairing: Military!Harrison x Female!Reader Summary: The part where Harrison reached the last month of his deployment Warnings: heartbreak, angst, foul language, mentions of death/dying, war
A/N: I’m doing something a bit different for this chapter. You can listen to the song “Say You Won’t Let Go” by James Arthur if you want the full effect (and heartbreak). Lyrics are in italics (as well as some words/phrases for emphasis). This chapter was hard to write, especially since this is one of my biggest fears for my friends and family that are serving overseas. I need a shot hug now.

“And I can say that I’ve changed, that I’ll keep you safe. I’ll be fine, don’t give up on me, I’ll come around. Lost my faith, made mistakes, kept myself awake” Fireworks by Sleep On It
After Y/N and Harrison made up, things appeared to go back to normal. Harrison went on weekly missions and could only talk to Y/N once a week. While that was hard on both of them, they loved that every time they spoke it was through facetime.
I met you in the dark You lit me up You made me feel as though I was enough
Harrison didn’t realize what time it was when he facetimed Y/N. The ringing of her phone while she was asleep caused her to shift in her bed. Her tired eyes read the screen: Harrison. When Y/N answered the call, she was not thinking about the lack of lighting or anything, just Harrison.
“Y/N, love? Where are you?” Harrison’s voice was filled with concern.
“I was sleeping, babe. What’s up?” Y/N yawned.
“Babe?” Harrison laughed at the new nickname.
“Fu- I’m sorry H. I was in deep sleep…” Y/N turned on the lamp by her bed.
“It’s okay, love. I should let you go back to sleep.” He smiled at the sight of her disheveled hair.
“No, it’s okay. I love talking to you.” She blushed while the corners of her lips tugged upwards.
We danced the night away We drank too much I held your hair back when You were throwing up
“I love talking to you too! Can I tell you about a dream I had the other day?” Harrison shyly asked.
“Don’t you mean night?” Y/N tried to correct him.
“I do mean day.” He corrected her.
“Well, get on with it!” She eagerly wanted him to share the dream with her.
“You better not laugh…” He quickly shifted his gaze off screen.
“Haz, you know I won’t unless it’s actually funny.” She reassured him, hoping that was that was sufficient for him to share.
“Okay, well…”
Harrison began to describe his dream. He had made it back home, and as he walked through the door of his room, Y/N was there sitting on his bed reading “Catch-22.” She hadn’t noticed that he was standing there until he cleared his throat. Y/N looked up from her book, jumped off his bed, and ran to him. Harrison dropped his bags and welcomed the embrace from the woman he loved. He described how tightly she hugged him, and when they pulled away, Harrison paused his storytelling.
Then you smiled over your shoulder For a minute, I was stone-cold sober I pulled you closer to my chest
“What happened?” Y/N inquired excitedly.
“I don’t know if I should tell you…” Harrison’s hand reaches for the back of his neck.
“C’mon Haz! What happened next?” She pleaded at the image of her best friend.
“Well, we, uh, we kissed. Er, I guess, I kissed you.” He continued with his nervous tic of rubbing the back of his neck.
“Haz…” She said his name softer than she intended.
“I know that I shouldn’t have told you. I’m sor-” He quickly tried to apologize.
“No, Haz! I think it’s really sweet.” Her lips curved upwards as her cheeks tinted.
And you asked me to stay over I said, I already told ya I think that you should get some rest
Harrison and Y/N continued to talk, mostly about how they felt about each other. As they began to express the feelings that they have held onto for so long. It felt as though a weight as heavy as tons of stone was lifted from their shoulders. They felt a release from the invisible force constricting their lungs and were finally able to take in air once again. It was as though the miles between them were nonexistent and it was just them.
“Go back to sleep, love.” He told her kindly.
“Okay. I love you, Harrison.” She smiled after a small yawn.
“I love you too, Y/N. I’ll talk to you in a week.” He said before ending the call.
I knew I loved you then But you'd never know ‘Cause I played it cool When I was scared of letting go
Y/N met up with Leslie to study for a biology exam that they were both dreading. They both decided to put off this one general education course because they both weren’t necessarily that great with science, but they couldn’t put it off any longer. As Y/N walked into her favorite coffee shop, she spotted Leslie in the back corner with her biology textbook open and three empty mugs that presumably held coffee.
“Hey Lely! How’s it going?” Y/N asked while setting her things down.
“Fine, everything’s fine! Nothing’s wrong! No ma’am, nothing at all.” Leslie quickly replied in a jittery tone, and Y/N could almost see her shaking from the caffeine coursing through her veins.
“Do I need to cut you off from coffee?” Y/N laughed at her friend’s behavior she had never seen before.
“Would you please? I can’t do this anymore Y/N!” Leslie grabbed Y/N’s right arm and eyes got wider.
“Leslie, take a deep breath. Do I need to distract you for a bit?” Y/N’s eyes filled with concern as she watched her friend start to spiral.
“Yes please…” Leslie replied as she slowly released her grip on Y/N’s arm.
“Well, Harrison called last night…” Y/N began to explain to her anxious friend.
As she told Leslie what had been said between her and Harrison, Y/N could visibly see her friend relax and light up at the way she was telling her friend of a possible relationship brewing. Leslie knew that things between her friend and Harrison would progress, but her biggest hope was that he made it home alive.
I know I needed you But I never showed But I wanna stay with you Until we're grey and old Just say you won't let go Just say you won't let go
Tom invited Y/N over to his flat to play catch-up with “Love Island” as the last few episodes we’re going to air that week. Y/N opted to take a walk to Tom’s flat as it was a gorgeous day out. She took in the sunlight that warmed her skin. She loved hearing the birds singing and the light cool breeze that blew. She was in a delighted state, and nothing could bring her down. She reached her friend’s flat and lightly knocked on the door. She could hear him say that he was coming and she was excited to see her friend.
“Hey Y/N!” Tom said as he opened the door to his flat.
“Hey Tommy!” Y/N said as she hugged her dear friend.
“Are you ready to catch up?” He asked as he pulled away from the embrace.
“Of course! I haven’t kept up just for you!” Hearing her say that she did something for him caused his heart to beat faster.
“You didn’t have to, love.” Tom’s cheeks lightly tinted with the smile tugging at his lips.
“Of course I had to! It wouldn’t be fair!” She replied as Tom stepped to the side so she could walk in.
“Is that Harrison’s shirt?” He asked Y/N after noticing the fit of the shirt on her frame.
“Yeah, it’s one of the ones he gave me before he left for deployment.” She answered while looking down at the simple grey tee she was wearing.
“Oh, well you look beautiful.” He shyly smiled.
I’ll wake you up with some breakfast in bed I'll bring you coffee With a kiss on your head
“Thanks Tommy!” Y/N nervously bit her bottom lip, and the sound of the nickname leaving her lips made Tom’s heart soar.
“You always look beautiful, Y/N…” He confessed as he felt the heat raging in his cheeks.
“You really think so?” She genuinely asked.
“Of course, love. I’d never lie about your beauty.” He quickly confessed.
“I’ve always questioned that, and even more so now…” Y/N looked away as she nervously bit her bottom lip again.
“Why is that?” Tom was thoroughly confused at her statement.
“Because of Harrison… I think we’re going to start dating when he gets back.” Her cheeks tinted while his heart broke.
“Oh… well, I’m glad for you both!” He tried to conceal his pain with a smile but didn’t succeed, and she didn’t notice.
There wasn’t much conversation after that. Tom sat on one end of the couch while Y/N sat at the other end. Y/N felt comfortable, but this was the first time he felt uncomfortable in his own flat. He knew he had to talk it out with his brothers.
And I'll take the kids to school Wave them goodbye And I'll thank my lucky stars for that night
Shortly after Y/N left Tom’s flat, Sam and Harry were knocking on his door. He opened the door but didn’t actually greet them. This concerned the twins, but Sam all the more. Sam recognized Tom’s pining for someone he couldn’t have, yet Tom never mentioned anything about his feelings to either of them. They each grabbed a beer and made their way over to the couch.
“What’s wrong, mate?” Harry was the first to break the silence.
“Nothing, just need people around me right now.” Tom replied before taking a drink.
“Do you want to talk about it?” Harry leaned forward to rest his forearms on his knees.
Tom looked at his brother with anger lacing through his features while Harry sat back to physically show he was leaving that topic behind.
“I’ve never seen you so gutted about a girl before.” Sam finally spoke.
“Who said my mood was about a girl?” Tom’s reply made the atmosphere in the room tense.
“Tom, you’re my brother. I notice these things about you.” Sam said softly, knowing he could calm his older brother.
“This is about Y/N, innit?” Harry chimed in.
“Yeah, and when Haz comes back, they’re going to date…” Tom looked at the half empty bottle in his hand.
“Have you told her how you feel?” Sam inquired, but already anticipating a specific answer.
“It wouldn’t matter. She’s in love with him, and I won’t destroy my best mate’s happiness.” Sam and Harry knew that Tom would never get in between his best mate and his happiness, especially with the possibility of his death hanging over his head.
All throughout the evening into the late hours of the night, the three Holland boys talked about the shattering heart that seemed as though it would never mend. While Sam and Harry stopped after their fourth beer, Tom didn’t stop. He sobbed over the girl that he longed for, but knew it was the girl his best mate needed. He promised himself that neither Y/N or Harrison would know about his feelings for a girl that before he never would have thought twice about.
When you looked over your shoulder For a minute, I forget that I'm older I wanna dance with you right now, oh
It was one month before Harrison’s deployment ended. The weeks leading up to this final month were spent planning. Y/N and Harrison discussed walks in the park, lunches and dinners at various restaurants in London (and even some abroad), movies they would watch together, going to rugby games, and even agreed to baking. Nothing could bring down the high that they both were on. They both counted down the days until Harrison was back home, and the excitement that ran through their veins kept them going every day. Harrison received his orders for his next mission, and while he wished that he could tell Y/N what he was doing, all he could say was that he would be back. He believed that he would always make it back.
And you look as beautiful as ever And I swear that everyday you'll get better You make me feel this way somehow
While Harrison was out in the field on a mission, he saw things that he couldn’t have imagined. He saw death first hand, but he never imagined that it would be the members of his unit. Harrison said his “I love you” to Y/N just before heading out on his next mission.
“I’ll be back in a week, love.” Harrison reminded Y/N once again.
“Be safe. I love you!” Y/N sweetly smiled.
“I will. I love you too, darling!” Harrison hung up and walked over to his fellow corpsmen.
I'm so in love with you And I hope you know Darling, your love is more Than worth its weight in gold We've come so far, my dear Look how we've grown
“’Bout time you join us Osterfield!” Marshall bellowed in the Humvee.
“Wouldn’t miss it for the world, Marshall!” Harrison replied settling in his seat near the back next to his fellow corpsman.
“Couldn’t tell by the sounds of ‘I love you too, darling!’” Marshall teased.
“You’re just pissed because you don’t have a lady.” Harrison quipped.
“So, it’s official?! Mah man!!!” Marshall heartily patted Haz’s back.
“No, not yet. I plan on doing that when I get ho-” Harrison couldn’t get the last word out.
And I wanna stay with you Until we're grey and old Just say you won't let go Just say you won't let go
The Humvee hit an IED. The contents of the Humvee and its passengers were sent hurtling up into the sky and back onto the ground. The scene was bloody, and it would have been a miracle if anyone survived the blast. One second Harrison had been talking to a lad he was slowly considering one of his best mates. The next, they both were strewn all over the sand with blood dripping out of their orifices.
I wanna live with you Even when we're ghosts ‘Cause you were always there for me When I needed you most
Harrison could only hear a ringing in his ears and slowly opened his eyes to see the horror before him. Marshall’s limp body lay a few feet away from him and was missing his right arm and lower half of his body. Harrison attempted to look at his own body, but there was so much blood. Whether it was his own blood or not, he couldn’t tell. His mind went straight to Y/N. I don’t want to go. I’m not ready to go. I love you, Y/N. I love you. He exhaled, and everything went black.
I'm gonna love you 'til My lungs give out…
Just say you won’t let go Just say you won't let go

“And I can say that I've changed, that I'll keep you safe. I'll be fine, don't give up on me, I'll come around. Lost my faith, made mistakes, kept myself awake” Fireworks by Sleep On It
Y/N wasn’t entirely sure how she and Harrison met. If you asked Harrison, he would say that he walked up to Y/N one day on the playground one fall afternoon at the nearby park. She could have sworn that she threw sand in his face, though that was neither here nor there. Either way, those two were seemly inseparable since the age of 6. Fast forward 15 years, and they were both 21 figuring out what they were going to do with their lives, or rather, what Y/N was going to do. Harrison had joined the Corps of Royal Marines shortly after his 19th birthday, and while his family had their reservations, they supported his decision. Y/N, well, not so much.
“Why? What in your right mind made you think this was a good idea?!” Y/N questioned Harrison.
“I just figured since I’m not going to uni, I should probably do some form of good while you’re off learning something. Besides, acting hasn’t really gotten me anywhere as of late…” Harrison looked away from his best friend briefly when he mentioned acting.
You see, Harrison loved the arts, and more specifically, acting. Harrison’s other best friend, Tom Holland, had already been in a few films, and Harrison wanted to join Tom more than anything. Both Tom and Y/N were there every time Harrison was denied a role, and it began to take its toll on Harrison.
“But you can help old ladies cross the street! Or volunteer at a hospital, or something else! Why do you have to put your life on the line in order to do ‘some form of good?!’” Y/N used air quotes.
“I’ll be fine, Y/N. I will probably end up doing some desk job anyways. I will be okay.” Harrison’s blue eyes pierced Y/N’s, and almost her very soul.
“Okay,” Y/N let out a sigh. “But if you ever get hurt, I will personally kill you.”
“Yeah, sure!” Harrison chuckled as he pulled Y/N into a hug.
As they embraced, Y/N took in his scent. Cedarwood and vanilla. She had memorized his scent, but this time it was different. It was more potent. It wasn’t because it was stronger, but she wanted to have this embrace seared into her memories. She wanted this moment to last forever. What she didn’t know was that Harrison wanted that too.
--
“You’ll write to me when you can, right?” Y/N asked as she embraced her best friend.
“Y/N, dear, I’m only going to recruit training. Besides, Tom will be around before he goes to Atlanta for filming.” Harrison hugged Y/N tightly, taking in the scent of her hair.
“You’re going to be gone for 32 weeks. That’s 8 months Haz! You better be writing me a letter at least once a week!” She said sternly.
“I will, I promise. I need to get going though.” He said as he slowly loosened his embrace.
“Be safe, okay? I don’t want to get a call from your mum saying you were being extra while training and ended up getting hurt.” Y/N slightly chuckled.
“Look, I know I’m a div, but I will be okay. Don’t worry about me love.” Y/N’s heart quickened at the sound of the new nickname.
“Okay. I love you.” She quickly hugged him one last time.
“I love you too. Don’t cry, okay? I’ll be back soon.” Harrison comforted her one last time before walking out of her flat.
As Y/N watched him walk out the door, time seemed to stop. She committed his exit to memory, and as the door shut, she began to sob. It killed Harrison to hear her on the other side of the door, but he kept walking knowing that if he turned back he would desert the Corps.
--
Throughout Harrison’s training, he kept his word and wrote Y/N a letter every week. Y/N looked forward to the post everyday just waiting to see if his letters came that day, and when it did, she read them incessantly. As time went on though, his letters became shorter and shorter. He shared less about how he missed home, his family, Monty, and Y/N, and more about how the food was disgusting and he was lacking sleep. His sign offs went from “Love, Haz” to “- Haz” to eventually not even signing off the letter. Y/N reasoned that he was getting busier with his training, but she would be lying if she said that she didn’t feel hurt as his writing changed.
Y/N on the other hand practically wrote novels to Harrison. She would tell him about her day, what she was learning in school, how she would take care of Monty, and even going out to bars and clubs with Tom. She always made sure to add that Tom would make sure no idiot would go near her and that she felt safe around Tom. This made Harrison slightly jealous, but he figured it had more to do with Y/N seemingly replacing him with Tom and not because of having feelings toward his best friend.
--
The day had finally arrived when Harrison would complete his training and return home. As Y/N and Tom waited anxiously at the Osterfield’s home, Y/N wondered how much they both changed while he was away.
Before stepping inside his home, Harrison took a deep breath. He wondered who would be the first to greet him and welcome him home. His best guess was Y/N, but he wasn’t sure. As he opened the door, the house was filled with anticipation of seeing their Marine come home after being gone for ages. As he looked inside, he saw his family, Monty, Tom, and Y/N. What he hadn’t expected to see was how close Tom and Y/N were sitting. That quickly changed when Y/N shot up like a rocket and sprinted toward her best friend. She almost knocked Harrison over when she ran to embrace him.
“I missed you so much!” She said as she held him tightly and tears streamed down her face.
“I missed you too, but it looks like you and Tom managed without me.” Harrison hugged her back, yet it sounded a bit too harsh.
“What do you mean by that, mate?” Tom asked as he moved over to his friends.
“Nothing, I’m just tired and I can’t wait to sleep in my own bed. Wait, aren’t you supposed to be in Atlanta?” Harrison tried to recover.
“I got a few days off so I could spend time with my best mate.” Tom said he joined in on the hug between Harrison and Y/N.
As he was hugging the rest of his family, Y/N thought about Harrison’s comment about her and Tom. Had she gotten really close to Tom? All she ever told Tom was that she couldn’t wait to see Harrison, but she felt closer to the boy than she did 8 months ago. She then began to notice his physical changes. Harrison became more muscular, but it wasn’t enough to were it looked strange on his slim build. And then there was his hair. His curly golden locks that Y/N loved were no longer as visible. He only had about an inch and a half, maybe two inches, on the top of his head. His eyes had changed too. His once vibrant and soft blue eyes seemed slightly darker and harder, but it wasn’t enough to make a big difference.
As the night went on, Harrison shared some stories of his training. He shared the guys he had met in the barracks and what it was like to be yelled at when he didn’t have his haircut to the approved length. Y/N just watched as he spoke. There was something off, but she couldn’t quite pinpoint what it was. He was just different somehow, and it had nothing to do with his physical appearance. Yet Harrison could feel Y/N’s gaze. He new that he came back differently, and almost as if he knew what she was trying to figure out, he piped up.
“They taught us to put our emotions away. We can’t let emotions drive us out on the field, otherwise we’d end up fucked and dead.” Harrison stated this matter of factly as he looked over at Y/N.
“Oh, that makes sense…” Y/N’s voice trailed as she watched Harrison go back to his previous conversation.
--
After Harrison’s three-week leave following his training, he was stationed about 20 minutes away from home. This made things emotionally easier on Y/N since she always feared that he would end up in some foreign country fighting for his life and her freedom. Harrison’s job at the base was keeping inventory of weaponry on the base. He was able to go home on weekends unless he had special field training or 24-hour duty. It was almost like things were back to normal, except for the lack of late night phone calls. Y/N was glad that things didn’t change drastically after he returned from training.
--
After about a month after Y/N’s 21st birthday, Harrison came home one weekend, and he seemed off. His movements were agitated, and Monty quickly picked up on that. Monty began to quietly whimper as he paced alongside Harrison in his room. Harrison was so deep in thought that he didn’t hear Monty or notice that Y/N walked into his room.
“Earth to Haz! Did you forget that I was coming over tonight?” Y/N cocked her head slightly to the left as she looked quizzically at her best friend.
“Uh, what? Oh, yeah, tonight. Sorry, I just have a lot on my mind from work.” Haz replied.
“Wanna talk about it? We can always start the movie later.” Y/N replied as she set her things down at the entrance of the room.
“Nah, it’s fine. We can start the movie. I’ll go grab some snacks. Get comfy.” He said as he exited his room.
Y/N began to set up the movie while Harrison grabbed some chips, candy, and two beers for them. He walked back into his bedroom to see Y/N sitting on his bed with her back leaning against his headboard. He took a moment to let that picture sink into his memory. When she looked over at him, he made his way toward the bed and handed her the snacks and her beer. Throughout the movie, he would glance over at Y/N trying to figure out the right time to tell her. As Y/N laughed at her favorite scene, Harrison spoke without realizing.
“I’m getting deployed.”
Y/N’s laughter stopped quickly and paused the movie.
“What?” She asked not sure that she heard him correctly.
“I am getting deployed. I leave in two weeks.”

“And I can say that I’ve changed, that I’ll keep you safe. I’ll be fine, don’t give up on me, I’ll come around. Lost my faith, made mistakes, kept myself awake” Fireworks by Sleep On It
Y/N received a message from Harrison as soon as he arrived at the base where he was going to be training before heading out to the Middle East.
Y/N, I made it to the base here in Spain. I won’t be able to message of call you until I’m done with training. Don’t worry about me. Let my family know that I’m okay. I love you.
Y/N smiled as she read the message on WhatsApp. She quickly replied to her best friend.
I’m glad you’re safe and okay, Haz. I’ll let them know. Whenever you can message or call, do it. I don’t care what time it is. I love you too.
That was the last message Y/N received before Harrison reached the Middle East.
Harrison packed his gear for his week of training, and the only thought running through his mind was Y/N’s words to him before he left. You don’t have to be a hero. The truth was that he wanted to be a hero. He wanted to be Y/N’s hero, but in order for him to be that for her, he had to make back home. His plan was to survive the next 8 months and make it back to his family, friends, and Y/N.
--
While Y/N counted down the days before she could get a message or call from Harrison, she tried to live life as normally as she could. She found herself at a local pet shop buying Monty treats before heading over to the Osterfield’s home. On her walk to their home, she took in the familiar scenic route. Thoughts automatically went to Harrison, and as she rounded the corner to reach his home, she realized that he wasn’t going to be the one to greet her at the door. As she lifted a slightly trembling hand to ring the doorbell. She could hear Harrison’s mother say that she was coming to the door.
“Y/N, sweetie! What a lovely surprise! What brings you here?” She asked as she hugged Y/N.
“I brought Monty some treats, and I wanted to see if Charlotte wanted to hang out for a bit.” Y/N hugged her back.
“Well Charlotte just left to visit some friends, but you’re more than welcomed to stay and have a cuppa. I was just about to put a pot.” She motioned Y/N to come into the house.
“Thank you, I really appreciate it.” Y/N smiled as she walked into the familiar.
Y/N was immediately greeted by Monty. “Hey Monts! Have you been a good boy?” Y/N knelt down to pet and love on the dog. She noticed the tear stains on the dog’s face and it broke her heart. She gave Monty a treat before taking the treat bag over to the kitchen cabinet that housed the dog’s food.
“How have you been holding up?” Harrison’s mother asked as she poured tea into two cups.
“I’m alright I guess. How have you been? I’m sure it must be hard walking past his room every day.” Y/N responded while walking over to the dining table.
“It is a bit difficult, but I know that Haz will do everything in his power to stay safe. He’s not as big of a div as you might think.” She quietly chuckled at the slight insult toward her son.
“Yeah, you’re right! And he said he would call or message when he’s done with training.” Y/N sat at the table while taking the tea from his best friend’s mother.
“You know, he truly does love you. He will make his way back, dear. You can always come over if you need to spend time in his room.” She stated before taking a sip from her tea.
“Thank you, Mrs. Osterfield. Is it alright if I go to his room after we have our tea?” Y/N asked as she felt the warmth radiating from the cup.
“Of course, dear. Anytime, just come and sit in his room if you need to. I can even get you a key to the house so it’s easier if no one is home.” She offered, and the pain in Y/N’s heart partially eased.
“Thank you so much; I’d really appreciate that.” Y/N smiled at the woman across from her.
“Anytime, love. I’ll give you Haz’s key. I’m sure he’d want you to have it.” She replied as she looked at the young girl across the table drinking her tea.
--
After finishing her tea, Y/N walked over to Harrison’s room. She took a deep breath before opening the door to her best friend’s bedroom. As the door opened, she caught a whiff of Harrison’s scent, and her eyes glassed over. She took a step inside and expected to see her best friend lounging on his bed, but she saw the bed void of his presence. She sat at the foot of the bed, just like she did the night she found out that Harrison was getting deployed. She grabbed one of his pillows and held onto it tightly. She quietly sobbed as her senses were aching for Harrison’s embrace, laugh, and scent to comfort her. Sadly, that comfort never came.
--
It was on a Saturday evening when Y/N’s phone began to ring. As she glanced at her phone, Y/N saw that Harrison was facetiming her. She quickly accepted the call and was ecstatic to see her best friend.
“Haz! I’ve missed you! How are you? Are you getting enough sleep? You look tired… Please tell me you’re not being a div and are trying to get some rest!” Y/N couldn’t slow her words down fast enough.
“I’ve missed you too, love. I’m okay, and I can’t always sleep when I want to. And hey! I’m not always a div!” Harrison laughed at his best friend’s behavior.
“Well whenever we’re together, you’re the div out of the two of us!” Y/N fired back with a smile on her face.
“I’ll let that slide. How have you been? Have you managed to stay out of trouble?” Harrison asked while taking in the radiant smile his best friend had.
“I’ve been okay, just missing you a lot. I’ve been over to your house almost every day, and your mom gave me your key.” Y/N’s smile became smaller as she recalled the last week.
“Y/N, love, don’t miss me so much that you don’t get a chance to live your life. I need you to go live your life. Please, do it for me.” He pleaded with his tearful friend.
“I know, and I’m trying. Just… Please come home. I don’t know if I can do another 8 months of this…” Her tears flowing like a flood.
“I wish I could come home, dear. I really wish I could, but we have to go through this. I promise, as soon as I get back, we will do anything you want to do.” He did his best to comfort his best friend who was on the brink of shattering on screen.
“I will try, I promise. And when you get back, all I want to do is hug you and never let go.” Y/N shared in between sobs.
“I wouldn’t mind doing that. If that’s all you want to do, we’ll do it. I can’t wai-”
“OSTERFIELD! Lights out! We leave in 0400 hours. Get your rest!” Y/N assumed it was his commanding officer giving him orders.
“I gotta go. I love you. Live your life. Don’t worry about me, okay?” Harrison tried to cherish his last moments with her.
“I’ll try not to. I love you! Message or call when you can! I love you!” And with that, the call was cut off.
--
Harrison was able to message or call Y/N for about 20 minutes on a daily basis. Both Harrison and Y/N took what they could when it came to contact with each other. They both preferred facetiming, but that didn’t always happen. During their daily talks, Harrison learned that Y/N became good friends with a girl in one her uni classes named Leslie. He was glad that she was making friends, even more so that it was a girl. Harrison also learned that the Infinity War London event was a fan event, and that the premiere was in Los Angeles. Y/N was telling Harrison how she was freaking out about what to wear when Tom offered to use his connections to get her dresses for the fan event in London and the premiere in Los Angeles. Harrison felt jealous that he couldn’t be with his best friends, and even more so that he wouldn’t be able to see Y/N in the dresses Tom was able to get her.
--
The day of the Infinity War Fan Event in London arrived, and Y/N was excited. It was the first day in two months that she slowly began to feel normal, or rather a new sense of normal. As she looked over the maroon dress that Tom picked out, she heard her phone ring on her desk. She ran over to her desk to answer it. She saw that it was Harrison facetiming her and quickly answered.
“You look all dolled up! What’s the occasion?” Harrison asked taking in Y/N’s hair and make-up.
“Hello to you too! It’s for the fan event for Infinity War! Wait ‘til you see the dress Tom picked! Hold on!” Y/N laughed, causing Harrison’s heart to skip a beat.
As Y/N placed her phone face up on her desk, Harrison looked at her white ceiling while hearing her struggle a bit.
“You alright over there?” Harrison laughed as he continued to her struggle.
“Yeah… I’m just… trying to get the z-zipper! FINALLY! Okay, close your eyes!” She commanded her best friend excitedly.
Harrison closed his eyes at his best friend’s request and heard her shuffling her phone. The noises finally ceased.
“Okay, open ‘em!” Y/N said as she centered herself in the center of the screen so that Harrison could see a full body shot of her in the dress.
“You look… absolutely stunning, love. You are gonna knock ‘em dead.” Both Harrison’s and Y/N’s cheeks tinted red as his eyes took in the sight of the floor-length maroon dress that hugged her waist and showed a bit of her cleavage.
“Y/N, darling, we need to leave or I’m going to be late again.” Tom’s voice echoed in the background, while Harrison’s heart cracked at the nickname Tom gave Y/N.
“Coming!” Y/N yelled at Tom.
“I have to go. I love you!” She walked over to her desk to pick up her phone.
“I lov-” Harrison tried to say goodbye before he got disconnected, and it hurt him more than he expected.
--
Harrison got to know his fellow corpsman well, but he still felt alone out in the middle of the desert. He longed to be home, to play with his dog, to have his mother’s cooking, to hear his father’s jokes, to go on drives with his sister, to kiss Y/N. Wait… kiss Y/N??? That was a thought that he hadn’t expected to have, yet the thought felt right, almost second nature. Harrison had to shove that thought away from his mind though. He knew his mission, and he couldn’t let thoughts of her distract him. He needed to make it back home alive, for her.
--
Over the next few days, Y/N told Harrison about her time at the fan event and how she couldn’t wait for the premiere in Los Angeles. She told him that Tom walked the red carpet alone and tried to shield her from the paparazzi so they wouldn’t think that they were dating. Harrison couldn’t help but notice the glow Y/N had as she spoke about her experiences. He couldn’t exactly tell her about his day, but it didn’t matter because he could listen to her all day.
--
A little under two weeks after the fan event in London, Y/N, Tom, and the Hollands were on their way to Los Angeles for the world premiere of Infinity War. Y/N knew that the trip would be great, but her heart longed to have Harrison join them. She opted to pay for wi-fi on the plane in case Harrison messaged her. He did. She told him how she was excited to visit the west coast of the US since she had never been before. He asked her to take as many pictures as she could and not to spoil the movie for him. She agreed of course and suggested that they watch it when he got back, which he wholeheartedly agreed.
--
The day of the premiere arrived, and Y/N was getting ready when her phone began to ring. It was Harrison. He was the only that called Y/N, and it made her heart leap for joy.
“I always seem to catch you when you’re getting ready, huh?” Harrison laughed as he saw his best friend with hair and make-up done but wearing his blue sweater.
“I guess so!” Y/N chuckled. “Isn’t it early morning over there? You usually call or message in the evening.” Y/N pointed out.
“Yeah it is, but I won’t be able to talk to you later tonight.” He briefly looked away to try to hide his disappointment.
“Oh… Why is that?” Y/N questioned.
“I am going to be going away for a while.” Harrison informed the girl whose face he was trying to commit to memory.
“Where are you going?” She asked, already anticipating an answer she didn’t want to hear.
“You know I can’t tell you that, darling. I was told I’ll be away from base for 7 to 10 days.” He answered recalling when Tom called her “darling” two weeks earlier.
“Oh… Please be safe, okay?” Y/N requested.
“You know I will. Now, let’s see that dress! I’m sure you look amazing in it!” Harrison smiled as he saw her blush.
“Okay, hold on!” She said as she put her phone down.
Y/N put on a navy-blue dress and struggled with the zipper once again. Harrison chuckled as he heard her struggle with the zipper. He heard her curse under her breath before she was finally able to get the zipper up.
“Close your eyes!” Y/N told Harrison.
As he closed his eyes, Harrison could hear the shuffling of the phone as Y/N placed it upright and made sure her whole body was in frame.
“You can look now!” She smiled as she waited for her best friend’s reaction.
“Love… You look… I don’t even have words.” Harrison rubbed the back of his neck nervously as he tried to find words that could adequately describe the way he felt when he saw her in the strapless, sweetheart neckline, floor-length navy-blue dress.
“Haz, stop it. I can’t possibly look that great.” Her cheeks tinted in a rose color.
“I’m being completely honest, Y/N. You look absolutely amazing. Don’t be surprised if a guy tries to pick you up.” He warned.
“They can try, but I won’t let them. I’ll just say that I have a boyfriend in the Royal Marines.” Y/N shyly looked away not wanting to see Harrison’s reaction.
“If it keeps assholes away, you can use me anytime!” Harrison smiled and hoped that one day it could become a reality.
“Thanks, Haz.” The way his nickname fell from her smiling lips sounded sweeter than any honey Harrison had ever tried, and he wanted to hear her say his name again and again.
They talked for several minutes before Harrison had to say goodbye and leave for his next destination for the mission he was going to be on.
“I need to go, love, but before I do, can I ask a favor?” Harrison asked not knowing if Y/N would be willing to follow through.
“Anything.” She replied without hesitating.
“Can you send me a picture of you in the dress? You just look so beautiful.” His voice trailed at the request.
“Of course, you div!” Y/N smiled at Harrison’s embarrassment.
“Hey! Well, I gotta go. I love you. I promise to be safe.” He knew that he had to keep that promise. Not for him, but for her.
“I love you. I’ll be waiting for you.” She said sweetly as Harrison ended the call.
Y/N quickly took a selfie and a mirror shot and sent them to Harrison on WhatsApp.
I love you, Harrison. Be safe. Know that I’m waiting for you to come back home.
