All instincts in Carlos always want to ease any ounce of hardship or sadness off of TK’s shoulders, but just as TK bites down his fight, in this role, Carlos can bite down his urge to make it all better. They need this sometimes. It snaps some of the tight ropes around Carlos’ conscience and winds them around some of TK’s demons. “Good,” Carlos says. He brushes the back of his hand against TK’s cheek and glows as he starts rubbing ever so slightly back against it. Like a cat, Carlos thinks, and his own chest feels like it traps a purr.

The very first words he remembers TK saying is ‘He’s my dad.”  More than that, Carlos remembers the serenity of his smile. Like there was nothing but the solid foundation of pride and love carrying the weight of that sentence. Carlos had watched the back of the newest Fire Captain, knowing so very little about him, but trusting this man’s admiration for his father to hold truth.

The earth and the wind used to be Carlos’ closest companions, as easily called upon as breath. Now he feels the elements outside his body, something he can strain to draw upon and then has to hope for their whimsy to indulge him. He was robbed. The night his father was killed, the demon tried to kill him to. It failed. Losing half of himself has been the price of his survival. He would have given all of himself to switch places with his father. Now, finding this man, TK, was the first clue Carlos ever to finding the demon that murdered his father. Or it might not. Either way, he’d put the last two weeks on hold in the search for a man who didn't want to be found. What else had his life truly come to?
