Seeing Luke always feels surreal.  Now, after all these years, when things  are so different than they were before. When the demigods have a home to call their own, a place they can grow up and live normal lives like they hadn’t been able to when Annabeth was younger. Turning her back on the gods and building New Athens had been the best decision Annabeth had ever made, and she can’t imagine ever going back to how things were before. 

She holds up a bottle of soda, the go-to drink they’d shared when she was a kid that he’d always brought her when she was sad. “Thought maybe we could go sit  by Thalia’s tree,” she says. “For old times sake?”

Hard gasps coated her throat like blood, Daphne’s heart pounding like the blunt hammering of nails. THUMP, THUMP, THUMP. Their footstops were anything but silent, the night’s inespeciable blackness like a void with no end. She felt Luke’s palm in hers, sweaty, his pulse as quick and haphazard as hers. This FRIGHTENED her more than anything. If he was afraid, this was bad. 

But afraid was good. AFRAID meant they’d do anything to stay alive. ❛ FASTER, LUKE.  ❜ Her chest heaved. Daphne’s sneakers sunk in mud and were wrenched out. She never faltered, pushing past twigs and leaves and the unaffected and cruel arms of the trees that formed the woods. There had to be an end in sight. 

Daphne’s hopes only continued to plummet, while her anxiety did the opposite. ❛ We need- we... we need- there! Come on! ❜ She heralded him, though he was no slow-foot. Luke kept up with her step for step, his long stride leading them to the cave off to the side. There, she could pause for a moment. 

❛ Don’t... speak. ❜ As if either of them could. WINDED, and terrified, Daphne braced herself against the cave wall, eyes wide open. She’d seen some really BIZARRE stuff in her life, but what was chasing them through those woods... ❛ Are you okay? ❜

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to @campmartyr / @contedefee / @flabberworried / @elfhamesking the love of my life!!! 

Did you know you’re one of my favorite people on this planet? Gosh, Christine where do I even begin? I feel like I’ve exhausted every compliment I could possibly give you, and every reminder of how awesome you are, but that can’t be true because you keep finding ways to remind me of how awesome you are. 

Yes, I laugh at everything, but know this, while I can’t always remember why something cracked me up so hard, the number of times you (and mars) have made me cry/wheeze/snort/gasp for air on call is ridiculous. I look back on all our calls fondly, and while most of our conversations are absolute shit just coming out of both our mouths, I love those conversations so much regardless. You have been making this quarantine shit so much bearable just by being yourself, and I hate that you’re having to spend your birthday indoors like this when you should be out, getting yummy food, delicious sweets and going on beautiful walks with your beautiful dog. (I also really wish I was there ugh!!!) 

I can’t honestly describe how proud I’ve been of you over the past few months. I know finding a job that makes you happy has been a rough journey for you, after a difficult time deciding what you wanted to do at college, but I really believe this is the path for you. You were made to teach and inspire, and to connect with others and make sure their their highschool experiences were everything they should be. 

I really hate the stereotype that Slytherins are mean and selfish and blah blah blah, because if you’ve taught me anything it’s that you embody all the best qualities of Slytherin, and in fact all the other houses. You’re ambitious, and absolutely cunning, and your loyalty to your clan knows no bounds. You’re brave in a way I wish I was, and when you care about a cause or a person, you don’t cower or sweeten your words because you believe in what you do fully and with all your heart. You’re also incredibly intelligent (in your own words, “you have all your braincells!”) and more than anything? You’re a good friend: period. I may not be a parent either, but I want you to know you’re also a good daughter. It’s not always easy to be that, but you do your best and you deserve to rest easy knowing that you are one. 

I’m so lucky and honored to be your best friend (I feel shy saying that hehe), because I can’t possibly imagine making you as happy and comforted and welcomed and embraced as much as you have made me feel.

Katie listens to Luke, clasped fingers looking almost as if she might just bow her head and begin to pray instead of answering him. Luke's words are softer, gentler than she expects, and she can't help thinking that Luke also sounds sad. Maybe even guilty. Maybe a little overwhelmed.

There's plenty of days that she thinks of, too. The first day of school, with her father hugging her close, in front of the school's entrance doors. A few years later, she's pulling down her lower lip to show missing teeth. In another memory, Katie holds up a drawing of what her teachers called an imaginary friend but Katie had seen around the farmhouse in all of their corn-silk haired, brittle winged, corn kernel rolls, and razor sharp teeth glory. One of the most memorable has her father in cap and gown from college, diploma in one hand, and Katie waving to the photographer as he holds her.

Katie tries to think of what day that Luke might be referring to in his own life story. The day when they met, him a teenager and her a preteen, both wanting to belong somewhere? Luke had run away from burnt cookies and frightening visions, but Katie just wanted to find her own mother when arriving to camp. Maybe it was the same day when she had made a flower crown for him, insisting that it was just for him? The day that that he met Annabeth and Thalia? Maybe the day that Kronos started to twist dreams into nightmares and warp truth? Or was he talking about the days when friends turned to enemies, half siblings against one another, and the war took its first casualties?

When Katie's eyes close and she dreams, all of the memories are real, and all trauma is real too. She thinks of laughter and amber flames from the camp fire and contraband s'mores. She thinks of walking hand-in-hand with a boy she's certain she loved, gently bumping shoulders, of watching the sun slowly rise and joking that Apollo must be driving the sun chariot lazily. She thinks of secret kisses, shared underneath the stars or in the strawberry fields, as she encourages leaves and stems to bloom like an umbrella for privacy.

Although Katie knows there is a time and season for everything, a delicate balance between life and death, she thinks those lives lost had their life thread cut too short.

Flowers unfurl and reveal a parade of colors around her sandals as her fingers relax, unclench. She momentarily tenses when a few younger campers argue, before a different Head Counselor keeps them separate. With an almost quivering sigh, Katie tries to keep accusations out of her tone, though she isn't completely successful at keeping the hurt at bay.

“Which one? What day do you think about, Luke?”

tattoos/piercings:  ears, nose, and nipples (I used to have my naval too, but it got infected rip) pierced. I have a bunch of tattoos but some of note are my “grow through what you go through” floral tattoo, a tattoo of cartoon aphrodite, an underboob tattoo of wisterias and an egyptian mythology motif, and a bunch of other ones! oh I can’t not mention my harry potter tattoo! it was my first one and was totally botched rip.

why did you choose this specific character/s?:  hermione is definitely a character that all of us felt we could relate to. as a kid, harry potter was a life raft for me, and hermione’s a character I connect with deeply and who I always loved. I didn’t consider writing her on indie for a long time because I was so intimidated by how many versions of her there were, then a long term kind mutual of mine reminded me that my hermione would be unique just because I was writing her, and i’m glad she did, because I don’t regret it one bit! I feel like I’m finally getting to live out my fantasy and I feel like I truly understand her and I’m so happy to share that with y’all <3
