Uses and benefit of Cashmere
Origins of Cashmere:
Cashmere is a fabric that has captured the imagination of connoisseurs of exquisite fabrics since centuries. Soft, luxurious and silky, it has been seen as a symbol of a person’s status, wealth and style. It is known for its soft silky finish, incomparable to any fabric in the world.
The word Cashmere originates from the name of the region ‘Kashmir’ in the Indian subcontinent. The Cashmere wool is obtained from the lower layer hair of goats known as ‘Carpa Hircus’ that live in the highlands of Tibet, Kashmir and Mongolia. When during warmer temperatures, the goats shed their lower layer, it is gathered by the producers using a comb.
Its production dates back to the thirteenth century when it was used by the emperors during special ceremonies and travelled to China, Iran, Iraq, Turkey, and Afghanistan etc. through ‘The Silk Route’.

Due to its insulating properties, Cashmere is known to warm up even in temperatures as low as minus forty degrees.
It is known to be the most expensive and valuable natural fabrics to be available in the world today. Cashmere’s quality is determined by the length and fineness of the goat’s hair. The longer and finer the hair is, the more expensive and better will the wool be.
Cashmere is one of the most expensive fabric materials in the world. This is because of the rarity and difficulty with which it is found and collected. It takes about two to three goats’ wool to create a single garment. Secondly, because of the complicated manufacturing process that it entails. The sorting and combing of the wool is done by hands and is labor intensive.
Uses of Cashmere:
Cashmere is used mainly for clothing purposes. Its other purposes being made use into the production of rugs, blankets, handicrafts etc.
While it is used to make clothing suitable for all seasons, its heat insulating properties make it mainly suitable for winter wear. Since it is lightweight, it keeps the wearer lightly dressed and cozy at the same time, without having to adorn layers of clothes.
Designers have featured Cashmere clothes and accessories in their fashion lines since the eighteenth century. Cashmere is spun and dyed to make clothing items like sweaters, shawls, coats, jackets scarves and hats.

Cashmere Hats are one amongst the common outfits. It is the most popular when used in its natural colors of white, grey and brown. But it is also dyed in various colors.
