My name is Jasmine Masters and I have something to say:
RPDR S9E1 Spoilers, Mystery 14th Queen prediction, and a lot of opinions about RPDR9 below the cut
Initial Impressions/hometown/Gaga looks
Peppermint: She has a very relaxed and fun attitude. She’s funny and witty in a way that feels authentic rather than fake reality TV “reads” or whatever. I’m really glad they’re starting to embrace trans queens, because they’ve had at least 14 trans and nb queens. (Katya, Violet, Jiggly, Stacy Layne Matthews, Jinkx Monsoon, Ben Delacreme, Carmen Carrera, and a lot of trans women who I know I’m missing).
Peppermint’s hometown look was pretty good. I was disappointed that so many NY queens did the statue of liberty, like that just seems way too obvious and there’s 4 NYC queens so... awk. I thought her Bowie inspired Gaga look was okay. It was definitely more inspired by Gaga rather than a direct recreation, which I appreciated. I thought she did okay.
I hope she goes far, but I think she’s going to make it to at least the top 7. I’m not sure that I can see her winning.
Valentina: She seems sweet and I am absolutely floored that she had only been doing drag for 10 months by the start of the season. Her look is very polished, and I am LIVING for her beret confessional look. She seems more reserved than a lot of the bigger personalities in this season, but she wasn’t afraid to stick up for herself and do a bit of reading.
Valentina’s hometown look was one of my favorites. I appreciate that she was authentic to her culture in representing East LA. She made a look with high-waisted pants, and a jacket with a bare chest look flawlessly feminine. Her Gaga look wasn’t my favorite. I’ve definitely bought those neon bob wigs from a party store for $15 before, and overall I don’t think she gave me the same impression that Gaga gave. Maybe some more dramatic makeup or a more matte wig would change my mind.
I think she’s definitely going to be a looks queen this season. I can see her making the middle of the pack, or going home within the first half.
Farrah Moan: So she comes off as a bit of an airhead, but I agree w Shea that it’s kinda endearing. And I’d be upset if everyone else got their own workspace but I didn’t.
Farrah’s hometown looks was one of my favorites. Fuck Michelle Visage for saying that she wasn’t “Vegas enough.” Like Farrah lives and works there, and she wanted to serve something other than the stereotypical showgirl. I really thought her look was a high art/religious reimagining of a showgirl. Loved this look. Her Gaga look did swallow her up, and the crosses looked too campy for me? She’s definitely a body queen and Gaga was right when she said that it needed a reveal.
She’s gonna be a body queen, and I hope she has something more to showcase. I’m pretty sure she isn’t a strong lipsyncer so I expect her to go home relatively early on a talent-based challenge.
Eureka: I know we shouldn’t compare queens to queens from previous seasons because they’re all unique blah blah blah BUT, she’s giving me a low-rent version of Ginger Minj. I said it. She has the same cheesy one-liner “reads” that aren’t funny.
Her hometown look was purposefully messy and I guess you could call it campy. I felt like that was kind of a cop out for actually presenting something good on the first challenge? Like messy hair and makeup (which implied abuse w the black eye and all of the bloody patches??? I could be making this up). I’m sure she’s telling an accurate story of TN where she grew up, but it just felt like an easy excuse for the first challenge. I liked her Gaga look, and I appreciate that she changed the proportions to make it fit her body, but it looked like it was duct-taped together?
She took up way too much screentime for my liking, and I’m confused at why she made top 3 for this challenge. I want her to go home early, but she’s a pretty good dancer for a big girl. I can see her surviving at least 2 lip syncs depending on who she’s up against. I think she has a decent shot at making top 7, but she’s not gonna make it to the end.
Jaymes Mansfield: So from this episode Jaymes didn’t leave a great impression. They edited her entrance to make it seem more awkward than it actually was (the queens are supposed to pose for like 30 seconds to get the shot), but she definitely comes off as nervous. I’ve seen a bit of her stuff on youtube and she’s funny in interviews. I think her character is cute and fun, but it’s definitely forced.
Being from the Milwaukee area, I was a little disappointed by her hometown look. It reminded me of Magnolia Crawford’s 1 and only runway on S6. She’s definitely a campy queen, and I think she’s trying to match her aesthetic to her humor (in the same way Trixie does), but it’s falling flat and just kinda coming off as poorly executed. I saw what she was going for with the messy sleepy Gaga look, but the dress was poorly made, the hair was way too sloppy, and the sleepy gig was confusing.
I want her to have the opportunity to show off her humor and for people to understand her campy gig. I think Gaga was right when she said that Jaymes is hiding behind her camp though. Unfortunately, I think her personality won’t translate well to TV, and I can see her going home in the first 3-4 episodes.
Charlie Hides: Her glasses look was a fun concept but doesn’t seem... age appropriate? I’m probably being ageist rn tbh. Her personality doesn’t really click for me. I think she’s gonna bring some unexpected looks. She’s done blackface before though, and I think Peppermint was right when she said that Charlie’s sense of humor might not translate to the judges. Anyone who describes themselves as “politically incorrect” honestly just comes off as an asshole to me.
Her hometown look was okay. Nothing special for me. I think if she had a better tearaway, and had done something more w her face/bonnet/overall look it would have been more successful. (rather than just taking a long puritan dress and then a reveal just making it a shorter dress.) Her Gaga look was one of the best of the night imo.
I think they’ll keep her till Snatch Game. If she flops on SG she’ll be out that episode or within the next 2. If she wins SG, I think they’ll keep her around for a little longer, but probably send her home after making enough excuses for her just because she did well on SG.
Nina Bo’Nina Brown: I like her charisma and she’s pretty funny. She’s definitely full of surprises, and I can’t wait to see what looks she’s gonna pull out w her paper technique. I think Michelle is gonna tell her to show us something other than her paper looks. Nina can probably bring some glamor, but I think she’ll go back ASAP to her paper looks.
The peach look was unique and conceptual. 100% of the time I would rather have a mediocrely executed conceptual look rather than a boring or “just pretty” look. I’m not sure if her makeup was too harsh or if the closeup HD shots just showed how over the top you need to do the makeup to paint for the back row. I wish she had blended her contour just a BIIIIIIT more. Her Gaga look was perfectly executed. I appreciate that she was giving us legs for days with her padding. It was a pretty obvious choice for a Gaga look, but honestly, I have nothing to complain about here.
7/8 people who win the first challenge have made it to the top 3. I see her at least making top 6. I can see her being a controversial queen.
Aja: I think her talking about her looks and Brooklyn so much may have been off-putting for some people. I didn’t see it as her bragging, I just saw a young queen being confident in herself.
Aja’s hometown look really left me wanting more. She kinda looked like a more polished statue of liberty impersonator on the street, but a significantly under-dressed drag queen. I was really hoping for something more from her. Her Gaga look wasn’t something I would conventionally think of for Gaga, but Gaga enjoyed it and I did too. It made up for her hometown look.
Even if she flounders a bit in the beginning of the competition she can vogue and dance and bring some energy to the stage. I can see her surviving some lipsyncs and getting her shit together pretty quickly. She’s got a perspective and she definitely has more to show. I’m looking forward to her. Probably top 6.
Sasha Velour: I think she can come off as a little too in her head or a little too cold initially.
I wasn’t initially impressed by her hometown look, and I think it was because both of her hands had props in them. I wish she would have attached the heart to a wire and made it pop off her should to float in the air or something to give her more liberty to pose and show off. Her Gaga look was... Gaga. Like exactly the same as the Art Pop look. I liked the addition of the flowy fabric, and I think she really sold herself in that runway look. I was getting that v Sasha-esque artsy angry feel from it. I’m not sure if she deserved top 3 for this challenge, but I’m not complaining.
I think we’ll see more of her as the competition unravels, and she’s definitely going to bring some out of the box, conceptual, art looks this season. I’m pretty positive she’s gonna make top 3. Absolutely my pick for the winner of S9, I’m biased.
Shea Coulee: I liked her confessionals and she seems really authentic. She had some funny moments, but I don’t really have much more to say about her at this point. She didn’t get a lot of screentime.
Her hometown look was fun and campy. I think she really showed us good camp. The proportions were right w that hotdog, it had a focal point, and she was selling it with her pageant quote. Her Gaga look didn’t go big enough for me. I understood what she was going for, but it didn’t go far enough for me.
Despite all of this, I think she’s really quick-witted and she’ll make it to the top 6. I look forward to seeing what she’ll do in the challenges where she can show off more of her personality. One of my picks for top 3.
Kimora Black: Gia Gunn 2.0 in a good way. I’m ready for her to bring some drama, and serve some curvy looks. I think she’s got a very direct personality and I can’t wait to see what she’ll do for the team challenges.
Her hometown look was okay imo. I wasn’t gagging, but she showed off her body. I think she got upstaged by Farrah here. Her Gaga look looked like someone dressing up as Gaga for Halloween.
I think she’ll stay on for roughly the same amount of time that Gia did. She’ll make a splash and serve some body, but I think she’ll fall flat on challenges where she has to do everything and can’t rely on her looks. She’s really hot out of drag though.
Trinity Taylor: I’m not looking forward to another season w pageant girl drama. I’m sure she has talents if she’s won pageants before, but her entrance look was really ugly imo. I think I’m personally gonna have a problem w her taste level.
I appreciate that she did her hometown look in that street art style, but it looked really ridiculous to me. It was so big that it looked like a weird human billboard. Her Gaga Countess look was just not fully realized imo. The blood looked fake, and her hair curls looked so HARD and crusty. I get that it’s a hard hairstyle, but this look did not come through for me, oh at all.
I don’t think she’ll be able to survive the other girls when the challenges get tougher. I can’t see her getting farther than the middle of the pack/after whatever the pageant drama is. She’ll stay long enough to talk about the Orlando Shooting though.
Alexis Michelle: She’s nice to look at out of drag and I’m pretty sure she had a few reads. She’s definitely gonna have some opinions and she seems like a strong personality. Her aesthetic was definitely giving me Roxxxy vibes, and it must be their shared pageant background.
I really wish her hometown look had been stronger. I loved the civil rights idea, but it looked haphazardly painted onto a bodice. I think her big NYC banner gave her a presence, but ultimately the campy tourist culture idea clashed with her civil rights idea. I wish she would have just stuck with the civil rights idea and took it all the way. Conceptually there was a lot more that could have been done there. Her Gaga look was elegant. Just gorgeous.
I’ve seen her do some really theatrical performances. I know she has a musical theatre background, and she definitely has a vision- to perform on broadway as a drag queen. I think she’ll be able to coast her way to the top 6. I hope the show gives her the platform to be able to achieve her dreams.
I LOVED having Gaga as a guest judge. I know it’s unrealistic but I hope she can judge again.
