Beginning of research
There are so many pressures from advertisements and manipulated photographs to be thinner, tanner, and more beautiful that we end up feeling down about our natural, un-manipulated selves. There are so many pressures from advertisements and manipulated photographs to be thinner, tanner, and more beautiful that we end up feeling down about our natural, un-manipulated selves. This blog post is a collection of various sources that will have research and information related to my topic of photo manipulation. I will focus on researching about the impacts of technology to art and the change that has happened because of it.  But I also have to look for answers and do more research about my topic as well.
Starting with the technology.
http://www.pewinternet.org/2013/01/04/section-6-overall-impact-of-technology-on-the-arts/
The good and the bad that technology brings to art.
“ Technology is helping them introduce more audiences to art:
The digital world is a very populist force, leveling the world between rich and poor, educated and uneducated. In our case, an organization with a name like “Historical Society” has an invisible shield that bounces people who are below median income, do not hold college degrees, who hold blue collar jobs, who are a racial or cultural minority, off.  The ubiquity of the computer, whether through your home machine, school, or local library, means that all of those things that cause discomfort don’t matter.  That is a big deal!
It has extended our visibility to many isolated individuals who may never have heard about our services, explored the artform, or who may have financial barriers to membership. We show to them every day what we do, rather than expect them to find a printed annual report and program summary. Social media are concrete and immediate examples of our living community in action. “ ( Kristin T., Kristen P., 2013)
In this article they provide answers from various organisations who took part on the survey displayed. They also list out the beneficial factors that technology has brought regarding art and what disadvantages there has been because of it. From this you will have more clearer picture of what the artist today can use for their advantages and how more larger audiences can be reached through technology. But the companies answering in the article also questions the “real art experiences” and that are they a disappearing form as the technology takes steps forward.
I think this source doesn’t really use art criticism as it evaluates the advantages and disadvantages the technology have on art. It is more wider aspect to what has changed because of technology, how artists have gained new ways to reach audience and become more easily known by others. But it also states the disadvantages like the blurred line between the virtual and real experience as well as how artists can meet the increasing expectations from the audience. This is a good starting point for my topic, what has changed with the technology and how does this change actually affect what we artist have to go through with our art today.
Next step, technology and art combined.
http://www.balanceinteractive.com/blog/role-art-our-lives-and-how-digital-technology-impacts-it
Innovative is the word
With the aid of digital technology, art has been exposed to new tools and materials that artist can work with. Technology also opened up the realms of creativity that is not only applicable to artists anymore but to anyone who has the desire to express himself/herself artistically. As a result of making creativity so accessible to everyone in our society, a whole creative industry has emerged while digital technology rapidly developed or one should say, it has exploded. (Timea S., 2014 )
This article focuses on analysing the good things that the technology has brought to the art world and making it easier for individuals to create art if they choose so. Writer also analyses the role of art and its impact on us, viewers, and how person has a possibility to share the thoughts and emotions he or she wants to express through the form of art.
“ The case of the Arts, the produced artwork captures and reflects the movement of this manifesting process: thought, desire, and application of creative skills to ultimately conjure up an emotionally responsive encounter with the spectator. “ ( Timea S., 2014)
As a conclusion the writer states that nevertheless the method, one has to practice and master the technique to produce stunning art, to express the thought behind the are more precisely. This is a factor that hasn’t changed during the time, even if we have more faster and multiple ways to produce art today than in the past.
Then to the topic, the use of photo manipulation.
https://kristinczerminski.wordpress.com/2013/12/10/photo-manipulation-the-impact-on-society-the-advertising-industry/
Our next big thing.
In this article writer start from listing the Photoshop being the latest big invention we have created and questions what if we didn’t have it, how would the world be like without it and how our views of “normal” would change compared today.
“There are so many pressures from advertisements and manipulated photographs to be thinner, tanner, and more beautiful that we end up feeling down about our natural, un-manipulated selves.” ( Kristin C., 2013)
Writer continues with history of photo manipulation and creation of Photoshop, stating that the industry of photography and advertisement has been changed forever because of the program. Then writer continues to the changes that have happened because of the use of Photoshop in advertisement and the writer himself doesn’t even consider them as advertisement anymore.
“Since the 1920’s advertisements have grown and changed drastically. Advertisements have been incorporated into the radio, television, and the Internet. The advertisement industry does not have to worry whether ads will help to produce sales, as much as they have to worry about if they advertise properly, with ethical respect.” ( Kristin C., 2013)
This statement really questions the real aim of the advertisement and where is it going at this point, how much they can change the photos and thus probably changes our views about certain things and how we will interpret the messages in the advertisement. Writer continues with examples and analyses the real product of McDonalds to one they use in their advertisement with the fact that they can do so, which makes me question exactly that what point they can go with these changes. As the writer continues, he also focuses on the image manipulations made on women and how the manipulated images went too far in his examples.
This is one of the points in my topic as well, how does these impact us as viewers. This article also focuses on this as:
“The misconception, created by manipulating photographs, has caused some people to develop eating disorders. It has led others to become depressed or extremely anxious. It has also caused a lot of people to have low self-esteem and search for surgical treatments and implants for a more permanent change.“ ( Kristin C., 2013)
Writer analyses the affects that photo manipulation has caused through the twisted images we interpret from media, changing our views about what is normal. This in a way is scary as it might end up people taking so radical actions, as the writer describes, that we put our health as a second important thing.
This article continues the issues of photo manipulations.
https://beautyredefined.org/photoshopping-altering-images-and-our-minds/
It also affects our minds to critical degree.
Writer starts straight with the problem considering what we see as “normal and beauty” today. How manipulated images have changed our opinions what women should look like, going so far that it fights against reality time to time.
“This unrealistic form is consistently represented across almost all media forms, along with blemish-free, wrinkle-free, and even pore-free skin, thanks to the wonders of digital manipulation as an “industry standard” that is openly endorsed and defended by magazine editors and media makers the world over.” ( Photoshopping: Altering Images and Our Minds, 2014 )
Even if we know this to be and that it is a STANDARD to manipulate photos like this, it is scaring that we continue to allow this and let our ideas of what is even possible to be twisted to unnatural understanding of reality itself. This just drives people to go through unnatural choices and thrive to extends ( as I mentioned earlier ) to harm themselves as they look forward to achieve the goals of looking like something which isn’t even possible or risks their health for achieving it. This mainly is a problem for women as they are edited to look “perfect” and others will push themselves, aiming to be looking like these “perfect” images. Men come into picture as they see also these enhanced pictures everywhere and their idea of beautiful is changed due this process and they are expecting to women look like the enhanced pictures, putting more pressure for women to achieve for the “perfection”.
But it doesn’t stop there.
“When superstar singer Kelly Clarkson was digitally slimmed down almost beyond recognition on Self’s September 2009 cover, people noticed. Her appearance on “Good Morning America” within just days of the cover shoot proved that her body did not look anything like the very thin one that appeared on the cover. In a shockingly ironic twist, the issue she appeared on was titled “The Body Confidence Issue” and featured an interview inside where she explained how comfortable she felt with her body” ( Photoshopping: Altering Images and Our Minds, 2014 )
What the magazines do and publish seems to push us even more in the direction of misconceptions and false truths. The messages we interpret from the images are enhanced with critical topics that may produce even more twisted ideas of what the reality behind the photos are. Yet there are people who tend to fight this and are moving to present photography in their magazines without retouching the persons in the images used. Still it seems to be a battle to be lost.
“Dr. McAneny of the AMA states, “We must stop exposing impressionable children and teenagers to advertisements portraying models with body types only attainable with the help of photo editing software.” And yet, in the last year, Photoshopping has reached an all-time high. It is inescapable.” ( Photoshopping: Altering Images and Our Minds, 2014 )
Writer continues with the problems and how it has spread to a scale which we possibly cannot stop anymore. And that might not even be the worst part, as it seems there ain’t scientific data to this change we are seeing, meaning that there ain’t also proper help for it or strong enough actions to be taken against photo manipulation.
Lets go back to advertising and to the culture of Photoshop in it
https://beta.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/industry-news/marketing/whats-behind-the-culture-of-photoshop-in-advertising/article10111740/?ref=http://www.theglobeandmail.com&
Photoshopped
Writer starts out by analysing “Evolution” video and how the video shows that regular women can be easily Photoshopped to look like super models. Video was produced by Dove and was a statement against the use of Photoshop.  Here’s the video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYhCn0jf46U
It clearly shows us how dramatic the change is and also states how easily the change is made, turning the model almost to a different person. And if certain changes are made this fast, how far can we basically take it if we use more time on it and manipulate the image even more realistic and unnoticeable to effects themselves.
Writer continues on this matter and analyses another step made against photo manipulated images. This time she mentions Ogilvy Toronto’s video and how they developed an easy Photoshop add-on that allows person easily to make one click changes to their photos. The result of using this simple ready made add-on didn’t do what it promised but instead changed the image to its original form as the writer states.
But even didn’t hit the right spot.
"It's a good message, but it seems mis-targeted," said Dan Strasser, an art director and associate creative director at Bensimon Byrne in Toronto. "Anybody who is one of those guys knows that we're not the ones pushing for that. But we are the ones doing it. It's just who they aimed at to generate buzz and try to get more of a general response." (Susan K., 2013)
As such it basically reaches the people who are doing the changes to the photos, but it is their work and even without this campaign they are fully aware of the changes made to the photos but cannot affect upon it as their companies require them to work on the photos the way they want. So the Photoshop add-on is only effective if someone personally wants to use Photoshop to improve own images and uses this add-on to do so and sees the message in it.
This manipulation also continues to other categories. Writer also analyses McDonalds campaign about their food got people asking them why the advertisements don’t actually represent their real products and is their food actually what they advertise it to be. Is this one part of the fast food’s success? And here I don’t mean that they wouldn’t make products that taste good but as making the food fresh and good looking it also affects our opinion about its healthiness? Would fast food be that popular if it were advertised as it actually look like? Advertisement doesn’t change how the food tastes but it certainly makes us want the food.
Who is to blame then ? As writer points out what Sharon MacLeod, Unilever Canada's vice-president of marketing, is saying "I'm not blaming anybody, or criticizing art directors. … It's an entire culture, the entire industry”, we are against a whole industry and it would need us as customers to take a stand against it. But why wont we ? Why do we just take it in as it is? I think quite many of us realize the changes made to the photos but has the effect, or would I say the damage, gone so far that we rather accept the false reality of the images as it has already changed our views and we like what we see.
Yet, lets  try to look into things differently, do we find something else to Photoshopping.
http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-ways-how-photoshop-has-changed-the-history-of-photograph/
History changed.
“Photoshop has changed the history of digital photography. Nowadays, when you look at an amazing photo or image your first impression is still “wow” but your immediate second thought is “that has to be photoshopped”. When you think of the history of Photoshop and everything Photoshop did to change the game, it’s pretty insane.” ( Steve C., 2010 )
I think the writer hits the spot on with this evaluation. I think it’s a good thing that we at least on some level challenge the truth value of the images we see and not blindly follow through, believing in the impossible. But also people working  on this field have noticed this fact and realise that too many changes might rise the question or statement of “that has to be photoshopped”. This again pushes us into direction of more defined photo manipulations to change our opinions and views through imagery.
But the writer also focuses on the creativity and how people can use Photoshop to express themselves, changing reality but also having message in it. It can make us think and to understand things from different point of views.
“Images that are photoshopped really have me doubting reality sometimes. Whether they have to do with people, places, or things, you can’t argue with the creativity and time that goes into some of these images. They give you a new perspective on the world.” ( Steve C., 2010 )
So not all the manipulations are wrong or focused to be misleading, but I think we have to mention the use Photoshop or show it through the work. Make it obvious enough to the viewer to know that there are changes made, but still focusing on delivering the message through the change on photo. As the writer analyses different ways of using Photoshop for different outcomes, there are options for our personal experiments, questioning things through manipulations and creativity as it comes to commercials.
Writer doesn’t write about the topics that much as he just lists them. Each way of using the Photoshop still focuses on the change that the application allows us to make. For sure its sometimes fun to see different visual changes and where artists imagination might take the us as we view the artwork, but sometimes it feels like that we have almost a need to touch the images, enhance them at least a little bit to more dramatic or correct something. Is our reality just becoming too boring ?
Final link focuses on the same topics but I would like to take few interesting items from it.
http://sites.psu.edu/grmertman/2015/10/22/photoshop-in-advertising/
Writer starts with analysing the facts related to media and its affects on young women, how they feel about themselves and actions taken regarding those feelings.
“Twenty billion is spent on beauty advertisements in the US annually, that’s a lot of money to be spent making women women feel worse about themselves.” ( Aves5159, 2015 )
The amount of money we spent on creating illusions of what we should look like makes me only wonder how much money it requires to help the people who end up making choices which damage their well being due to these created illusions. And how many actually suffers from it even without seeking or having help available for it. This is also first time when the writer points out that this problem of photo manipulation not only focuses on women but also men.
“Areas of the body such as the jaw line and abs are electronically altered to be more appealing.  Sixteen percent of high school boys have an eating disorder and many report that they are more afraid of gaining weight than getting cancer or other terminal illness.” ( Aves5159, 2015 )
I can relate to this as I have been around sports for quite some time. Way too many have twisted ideas of what it takes to achieve a body like the media presents us and the truth is that it is impossible. Too much is enhanced with Photoshop and photos are taken at perfect lightning situations in begin with. People also seem to forget that we are all different and have different genes. This applies to how we look, and not all of us can achieve to be real life “Hulks” even if we wanted to. If we would be made out of same “building materials” we all would look pretty close to same if we were to follow same life choices as one another. We should remember that there is different ways to look healthy if one wants to do so, and it doesn’t apply to the images shown in media.
Yet media has implemented an idea to our heads that with heavy training and diet consisting only protein full shakes is the key to achieve the perfect body. In reality we only end up draining ourselves completely and changing our way of life to another end of being healthy. Or even worse. We reach for more extreme solutions as we don’t see the changes by training hard or lack the will to do so. People are driven to achieve this perfect image and go as far as to a point where it requires your life.
As writer continues to the topic, if there is anything done against the photo manipulation, I was quite interested on the fact that stars who are followed by millions actually take up on the issue. Their choice of having un edited photos for their followers and the media creates not only truthful images but also delivers message to the masses that this is how it is.
“Associations and even congress have stepped in to control the out-of-control situation of photoshop and misleading consumers. The American Medical Association (AMA) announced that it was against the manipulation of images in advertising as photoshopped images of unattainable standards may result in psychological problems such as unhealthy self-image and eating disorders.” ( Aves5159, 2015 )
Not only stars take actions against the photo manipulation, it seems that more and more people are growing aware of the problem at hand and many are getting frustrated by the fact that almost everything is manipulated. Also the problems emerging  through photo manipulation raise more awareness of the topic and drives people to make a stand against this ongoing “madness” of creating twisted images of reality.
But as I stated out earlier that Photoshop have had such a huge impact on us, to the history of photography and making of, that we probably wont get rid of it ever. So are we going to go along with this “necessary evil” ? As far as I like the program and the creativity that I can do with it, it is also a tool that will follow through with me as a graphic designer. But understanding the problems caused, things the manipulation has set us people to thrive and looking up for, is something that I, as a designer, have to also state out to the public. We have to take actions against the problems and manipulation happening. We, designers, are the ones creating the messages and we have to take the responsibility of our makings or enlighten people we are creating our designs for about the issues we face today.
