he takes a moment to think about how dewey has a hand on his shoulder and his asking him for his honesty versus how his father would be yelling down at him, maybe even gripping at his ear so much it felt like it was going to be torn off. one was a man accusing him of being a murderer and was still showing him kindness and compassion, asking for the truth so that he might be spared. versus a man who was supposed to love him despite his clear preference for his other son, a man who would drag his children into darkness for his own personal mission, a man who has laid his hands on him in far crueler ways many, many times before.

ethan craved the kindness, for forgiveness and here dewey is, offering it to him for just a small amount of information to save the people that, regardless of what his father wants, still became his genuine friends
