In one large study, researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health found that walking half an hour a day cut the overall risk of heart disease by 18 percent. In a study of the benefits of walking for people with diabetes, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, found that just two hours of walking per week can reduce the risk of death from heart disease by 34 percent. . . #walking #heartdisease #healthyeating #metabolism #calories #cholesterol #weightloss #nutrition #eathealthy #bloodpressure #healthy #goodhealth #health #healthyliving #healthylife #centerforbalancedhealth https://ift.tt/2xPq9vh

Compounds in cranberry juice have been shown to be beneficial for the prevention and treatment of urinary tract infections while also decreasing the use of antibiotics in the elderly. Goji berries, also known as wolfberries, are red berries from China that have immune-regulating properties as evidenced by a study from “Journal of Medicinal Food”, which showed daily consumption of goji juice increased immune cells called lymphocytes and antibodies called immunoglobulin G when compared to a placebo. Lycopene is the most potent antioxidant in tomatoes and the same pigment molecule that gives red bell peppers and watermelon their red color. However, there are also many additional compounds in tomatoes and tomato products that can protect the DNA of immune cells from oxidative damage and therefore promote proper immune function. . . #redberries #immunesystem #gojiberries #cranberry #antioxidant #tomato #vitaminc #heartdisease #healthyeating #metabolism #calories #cholesterol #weightloss #nutrition #eathealthy #bloodpressure #healthy #goodhealth #health #healthyliving #healthylife #centerforbalancedhealth https://ift.tt/2xPq9vh

Women who consume high amounts of the flavonoids found in oranges and grapefruits have a 19% lower risk of ischemic stroke(caused by a clot) than women who don't get as much of these compounds, a study found. Citrus fruits are also high in vitamin C, which has been linked with a lower risk of heart disease. Stick with whole citrus fruits, which also provide filling fiber, or small portions of fresh squeezed or 100% citrus juice.  And be aware that grapefruit products may interfere with the action of the cholesterol-lowering drugs known as statins. . . #womenshealth #citrusfuits #flavonoids #oranges #grapefruit #vitaminc #heartdisease #healthyeating #metabolism #calories #cholesterol #weightloss #nutrition #eathealthy #bloodpressure #healthy #goodhealth #health #healthyliving #healthylife #centerforbalancedhealth https://ift.tt/2xPq9vh

Choose an entree salad with grilled chicken, shrimp or vegetables. Choose a dressing you like, but be cautious with the amount. Use half the package or keep the salad dressing on the side to control the number of calories from added fat and other unwanted ingredients, such as added salt and sugar. Watch out for high-calorie salads, such as those with deep-fried shells or those topped with breaded chicken or other fried toppings. Also skip extras, such as cheese and croutons, which quickly increase your calorie count. . . #salad #vegetables #healthyeating #metabolism #calories #cholesterol #weightloss #nutrition #eathealthy #bloodpressure #healthy #goodhealth #health #healthyliving #healthylife #centerforbalancedhealth https://ift.tt/2xPq9vh

Balancing physical activity and a healthful diet is the best recipe for health and fitness. Set a goal to be physically active at least 30 minutes every day — this even can be broken into three 10-minute sessions throughout the day. For someone who is currently inactive, it's a good idea to start with a few minutes of activity, such as walking, and gradually increase this time as they become stronger. And always check with a health-care provider before beginning a new physical activity program. . . #exercise #physicalactivity #walking #healthyeating #metabolism #calories #cholesterol #weightloss #nutrition #eathealthy #bloodpressure #healthy #goodhealth #health #healthyliving #healthylife #centerforbalancedhealth https://ift.tt/2xPq9vh

Two of the primary ways that diet affects PCOS are weight management and insulin production and resistance. However, insulin plays a significant role in PCOS, so managing insulin levels with a PCOS diet is one of the best steps people can take to manage the condition. Many people with PCOS have insulin resistance. In fact, more than 50 percent of those with PCOS develop diabetes or pre-diabetes before the age of 40. Diabetes is directly related to how the body processes insulin. Following a diet that meets a person’s nutritional needs, maintains a healthy weight, and promotes good insulin levels can help people with PCOS feel better. . . #pcos #diabetes #healthyeating #metabolism #calories #cholesterol #weightloss #nutrition #eathealthy #bloodpressure #healthy #goodhealth #health #healthyliving #healthylife #centerforbalancedhealth https://ift.tt/2xPq9vh

If you sit too much, your brain could look just like that of someone with dementia. Sitting also raises your risk of heart disease, diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol, which all play a role in the condition. . . #sitting #stroke #highbloodpressure #heartdisease #healthyeating #metabolism #calories #cholesterol #weightloss #nutrition #eathealthy #bloodpressure #healthy #goodhealth #health #healthyliving #healthylife #centerforbalancedhealth https://ift.tt/2xPq9vh

Choose foods with less sodium and prepare foods with little or no salt. To lower blood pressure, aim to eat no more than 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day. Reducing daily intake to 1,500 mg is desirable because it can lower blood pressure even further. If you can’t meet these goals right now, even reducing sodium intake by 1,000 mg per day can benefit blood pressure. . . #bllodpressure #sodium #salt #nutrients #healthyweight #heartdisease #healthyeating #metabolism #calories #cholesterol #weightloss #nutrition #eathealthy #bloodpressure #healthy #goodhealth #health #healthyliving #healthylife #centerforbalancedhealth https://ift.tt/2xPq9vh

Healthy eating begins with you! Giving your body the right nutrients and maintaining a healthy weight can help you stay active and independent. You’ll also spend less time and money at the doctor. This is especially true if you have a chronic condition, such as diabetes or heart disease. The definition of healthy eating does change a little as you age. For example, as you grow older, your metabolism slows down, so you need fewer calories than before. Your body also needs more of certain nutrients. That means it’s more important than ever to choose foods that give you the best nutritional value. . . #nutrients #healthyweight #heartdisease #healthyeating #metabolism #calories #cholesterol #weightloss #nutrition #eathealthy #bloodpressure #healthy #goodhealth #health #healthyliving #healthylife #centerforbalancedhealth https://ift.tt/2xPq9vh

Magnesium helps your body make protein and bone, and it keeps your blood sugar stable. You can get it from nuts, seeds, and leafy greens. But older people tend to eat less of it. Plus, they're more likely to have long-term health conditions or take many medications, both of which may leave you short of magnesium. . . #magnesium #bloodsugar #nuts #seeds #greens #protein #bone #bloodpressure #cholesterol #weightloss #nutrition #eathealthy #bloodpressure #healthy #goodhealth #health #healthyliving #healthylife #centerforbalancedhealth https://ift.tt/2xPq9vh

Say goodbye to low-fat and fat-free products. Say good riddance to Egg Beaters, artificial creamers, and reduced-fat peanut butter. Banish any item labeled ‘light’ or ‘lite’ from your pantry and refrigerator. Forget nonfat and low-fat dairy. (If your grocery store doesn’t carry plain, full-fat yogurt, buy the plain low-fat version and add back the fat by stirring in heavy cream, sour cream, or crème fraiche.) Rethink your grocery list and stock your refrigerator and pantry with real whole food, including fat-rich options like avocados and eggs. Try to add natural fat rather than avoid it. Fatty cuts of meat can be more flavorful, tender and inexpensive than leaner cuts. Salmon and sardines contain plenty of healthy fats and are a terrific addition, too. Invite these delicious items back onto your plate. . . #lowcarb #highfat #heartdisease #heartattack #bloodpressure #cholesterol #weightloss #nutrition #eathealthy #bloodpressure #healthy #goodhealth #health #healthyliving #healthylife #centerforbalancedhealth https://ift.tt/2xPq9vh

You may think all cholesterol is bad, but your body needs some to work right. Cholesterol is a waxy substance that your body makes and you also get from food. It allows your body to make vitamin D and certain hormones, including estrogen in women and testosterone in men, and helps with digestion. There are two types of cholesterol you may have heard about: High-density lipoprotein or HDL, often called good cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein or LDL, often called bad cholesterol. Bad cholesterol can contribute to artery-clogging plaque. Good cholesterol, on the other hand, helps remove plaque. In the end, it helps protect you from getting heart disease. Having too much of the bad, or not enough of the good, can lead to heart disease. . . #heartdisease #heartattack #bloodpressure #cholesterol #weightloss #nutrition #eathealthy #bloodpressure #healthy #goodhealth #health #healthyliving #healthylife #centerforbalancedhealth https://ift.tt/2xPq9vh

Pomegranate juice (you can eat the fruit itself but with its many tiny seeds, it's not nearly as convenient) offers potent antioxidant benefits which protect the brain from the damage of free radicals. Because pomegranate juice has added sugar (to counteract its natural tartness), you don't want to go overboard. Approximately 2 ounces a day, diluted with spring water or seltzer should do the trick. . . #pomagranate #brain #fruits #veggies #loseweight #weightloss #nutrition #eathealthy #bloodpressure #healthy #goodhealth #health #healthyliving #healthylife #centerforbalancedhealth https://ift.tt/2xPq9vh

Many restaurants offer complimentary bread or baskets of tortilla chips to start off the meal. If you have a hard time resisting the temptation of the break basket, politely tell the server that you don’t need the basket or ask if it would be possible for them to take it away earlier than usual. If bread or chips come with salsa, hummus or guacamole, ask if you can substitute sliced veggies instead. . . #guacamole #diningout #tips #ditchthecarbs #fruits #veggies #loseweight #weightloss #nutrition #eathealthy #bloodpressure #healthy #goodhealth #health #healthyliving #healthylife #centerforbalancedhealth https://ift.tt/2xPq9vh
