#picturebooks
Interesting things I found -
http://wordlesspicturebooks-blog.tumblr.com/ I never knew there were so many wordless picture books! This blog is a great collection of a variety of wordless picture books, with incredibly useful information on how to utilise them in the classroom.  I think this type of text is important to explore in primary education as it is not only engaging for students, but provides them with opportunities to build a number of literacy and social/communication skills that are crucial to further development.
http://blog.picturebookmakers.com/ This tumblr highlights a number of talented picture book makers around the world. It provides a context for their work and discusses the author/illustrator’s  creative processes, their intent, meaning and purpose. It’s so interesting to read about any of these artists - I pick one to read about whenever I am scrolling through tumblr and always find myself doing further research into their picture books!
http://imageblock.tumblr.com/ This tumblr showcases the work of Noah Klocek, an illustrator and storyteller. These images are beautiful! They are so imaginative, expressive and emotive, each telling a story of it’s own. As soon as I found this blog I immediately began researching this artist and his work, which is very inspiring!
Researching #picturebooks has proved to be such a great way to find resources for the classroom! An endless supply of great resources to use  in literacy studies...

Prompt 4
Social Media/Class Displays
I think it is really important, vital, for children to be exposed to platforms of social media before they venture out and create accounts themselves. They need to be briefed on the dangers, the consequences of their actions online and of course, the cyber bullying and harassment that occurs on the world wide web.
However, children also need to be informed of the benefits that social media can have on their lives, both academically and socially. There is no doubt that social media makes it infinitely easy to connect and share ideas from just about any place at any time of the day.
Just like this task incorporates the use of Tumblr, social media platforms can enhance the education communication from person to person effortlessly.
I did not get a chance to make or display a poster regarding social media but I think it would be worthwhile to do a class research board. Students can find their own information about the strengths and weaknesses of using social media. This way they are all contributing to the knowledge and making sense of it as they go, rather than simply stating and displaying my own thoughts on the debate, without student input. An example may look something like this,
Tumblr media
And could potentially include some pros and cons of each individual social media website.

A vivid childhood book that was read to the Grade 2 class I was in was ‘The Cat in the Hat’ by Dr Seuss. Every time the teacher would read parts of the book, the whole class listened intently to the expression the teacher used and the words within the book. All the students would laugh constantly and their faces were mesmerised by the creativity and cheekiness of the cat. During the year and even year the course of primary school the book was read millions of times by students on their own and as a whole class. As the class loved the creativity and funniness of the book we created our own little skit of ‘The Cat in the Hat’ to present at the end of year school concert. Still to this day I see students reading the book and see on their faces the love I had for the book when I was younger. Even as an adult I still have times that things remind me of this Dr Seuss’s books and make me reflect on when they were read to me.

It is important for students, especially by grade 5/6 to know and recognise Indigenous language. This video is at least, a great introduction to this. Many activities such as; writing a story with the challenge of using some of the words provided in the video. It can also allow them to research Aboriginal and Torres Strait islanders history and focus on geography components.

Prompt 8
Tumblr media
The above image and following caption has been reblogged from user teachingtreats:
New teaching resources! ‘I have been wanting ‘The Rabbits’ for so long - such a great resource for the Australian colonisation. I picked up leaf littler today on sale, it has amazing illustrations and information about environmental impacts. The best part is the fold out flaps!’
As I perused the hashtag #picturebooks, I came across many images before I was immediately taken by the above image. Upon a closer investigation, I discovered a user who had posted some very relevant material that I could firmly relate to. I would recommend teachingtreats to any fellow Bachelor of Education students- she is a pre-service teacher herself and has some valuable posts relating to all things teaching.
I myself have read both these amazing picture books- ‘The Rabbits’ by John Marsden and Shaun Tan, and ‘Leaf Litter’ by Rachel Tonkin and thoroughly enjoyed them.
The illustrations in both books (though very different stylistically) are captivating and beautiful; not only for young children but for people of all ages- very engaging resources for a classroom.
Both texts contain strong themes which would be ideal to study in a classroom, as well as deep, underlying messages which will facilitate critical evaluation and discovery- ideal for Middle Years Learners.

Week 8 prompt
For this weeks #picturebooks search I have used Instagram. There were many options to look through, similar to on this format of social media. One post that took my eye however was a children;s book titled, ‘Imagine’ by John and Yoko Ono Lennon. In researching this book I have found that it is about a pigeon flying around the world spreading the message of tolerance. This text opens up many educational experiences that can be explored. As this text uses lyrics from Lennon’s song ‘Imagine’ this may also be something that can be incorporated into the classroom for an education as well as engaging experience.
Throughout the previous 2 weeks posts I have been opened up to a new world of research options. I had previously used Pintrest to gather resources and ideas but the use of just this one hashtag has already provided me 2 valuable resources. I feel like bringing this into the classroom could go either way, it may be a great benefit in students research or may be misused but definitely something worth looking into!

This picture book was found by researching the hashtag #picturebooks, it was posted by the account harpercollins, and attached was a very succinct message surrounding the book, it is as follows:
‘On July 20, 1969, humans first landed on the moon, but our favorite moon (book) came out 22 years earlier, in 1947. Here, a look inside this first edition of Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown, published by Harper & Row.’
It is an interesting picture book as it captures many different moments with the moon, as well as incorporating many different stories within the one. There are many ideas that can be taken from the book and many frontloading activities that can be devised for many various topics such as bed time stories and exploration of space.

PROMPT 5
TASK 1- Dylan died from a  cold night spent with no food. His reported passing luckily happened in silence.under a transparent  sky with only a hollow tree in sight. Please leave your prayers through this hard time, so our spirits can regain their strength.
TASK 2- The entire worlds morale has taken a turn for the worst, as they’re starting to neglect real life crisis's; such as world hunger for starving kids.
TASK 3-  I would base a front loading class around ‘inferring’. As its a much needed skill that needs a lot of attention payed to it within a classroom. Students would only be allowed to see the front of the books illustrations & title, from that they’re then to predic the plot/story line and  key messages to come out of the book.

Prompt 6
The following link is a video called ‘Dreaming about Country.’ It depicts creations by Edwin Lee Mulligan, an Indigenous artist. His paintings are inspired by his personal history and culture; connection to his land and the land of his ancestors. The trees, mountains, river and creatures of his culture are what he recreates in artwork to sustain and express his spiritual connection with his Country.
http://splash.abc.net.au/home#!/media/1647459/dreaming-about-country
I believe this link could be useful during a front loading sequence on the picture book ‘The Cave Painters’ by Percy Trezise.
Tumblr media
‘The Cave Painters’ is a picture story-book which explores similar themes to the video- Indigenous connection with land and ancestry; and the importance of upholding and keeping the Indigenous culture and traditions alive. Students would benefit from observing a modern-day example of Indigenous connection through art before delving into a deeper text which demonstrates the ancient and significant tradition of art and Indigenous connection with land.
