Digimon Data Squad Dub Comparison Episode 26 - Memory is the First Thing to Go!

This is a companion to my commentary on the original Japanese Digimon Savers! Reading my commentary on the original version of this episode (which you can find here) is recommended before reading this dub comparison.

Recap Marcus: “Kurata said he was going to the Digital World to reason with Merukimon, but he was really going there to destroy him!”

I think I said once when I first pointed this out that I was going to try not to rag on the dub every time it uses “destroy” instead of kill, but… man, every time, it just jars me. (Though, to be fair, the original recap used “defeated” here, so.)

Recap Marcus: “Hey, Kurata? I guess it’s back to the drawing board!”

Marcus didn’t have that many fun phrasings this recap, but here’s one. Why can it not be Marcus more often.

Masaru: “Ikuto. There’s no use crying all the time. Let’s go.”

Marcus: “Keenan? You’re still welcome at my house if you want. Let’s go.”

I am sad that the relevance of this line to Masaru’s own past of telling himself that crying about his problems wasn’t going to fix them went over the dubbers’ heads. I guess I can appreciate that they felt the message of “don’t cry” is an unhealthy one, but I also think that Masaru’s coping methods being somewhat unhealthy is meant to be the point there. Still, this replacement is pretty adorable in an entirely different way, so I can’t be too mad.

Masaru: “Damn it, of all the times to be gone.”

Marcus: “Of all the times to take a group vacation!”

Masaru was being kind of oblivious to not realise there was something non-routine about everyone being gone at once, but it’s a lot more unreasonable that Marcus seems to think everyone would have just taken a group vacation all at once (…and yet also have somehow programmed the Digital Dive to bring them back here).

Hashiba: “I received a tip.”

Hashima: “I received an anonymous tip.”

I’m pretty sure this tip was not supposed to have been anonymous at all. There’s no reason Kurata would bother doing it anonymously. Hashiba in the original just didn’t feel the need to tell the DATS team who it was from.

Hashima: “The Data Squad turned traitor by joining forces with the Digimon.”

Well, Director Hashima, I guess that makes you a traitor too, then, since you’re the person in charge of the Data Squad.

So Hashima promptly fires everyone from DATS – as in, he just fired or arrested his own entire workforce. What… what job does he even have left now? Can’t be the Director of DATS if nobody works for DATS any more.

Sampson has also been arrested for treason, but treason against… what, exactly? There is no government ministry involved here for anyone to be treasonous against. The only thing close is DATS itself, but that doesn’t really work when Hashima’s just arrested or fired basically the whole organisation except himself.

The reasons Hashima’s job change in the dub makes no sense just keep piling up.

Kurata: “How incredibly unfortunate.”

Kurata: “My, my, what a mess you’ve all created.”

Yes, Kurata, it’s totally all their fault and not remotely yours. I love how he’s deflecting the blame even more pointedly than in the original.

Masaru: “What are you doing?!”

Marcus: “Hey! In case you didn’t know, we’re the good guys!”

I kind of enjoy this addition of Marcus being confused and annoyed that they’re being treated like bad guys thanks to Kurata’s scheming. It was probably a similar notion on Masaru’s mind as he questioned this in his original line, but I don’t think it hurts to have him say so outright.

Gaomon: “Thomas!”

Agumon: “Marcus!”

Because “Master” and “Aniki” are two lip-flaps and their dub equivalents are not, we instead get some rare instances of Gaomon and Agumon using their partners’ actual names, which (unintentionally) perhaps makes this hit harder.

Dub-Agumon makes some very amusing “ARRRARARARARGH” sounds while punching the glass wall that weren’t there in the original. I bet his VA had fun with that.

Kudamon: “All of it went far too smoothly.”

Kudamon: “All of just did not add up.”

This is referring to the hints of Kurata’s shady activity and scheming that were present throughout episodes 21 to 23. Surely the point is that it all did add up – it added up to Kurata being obviously up to no good.

OUCH Falcomon please get a voice transplant. I just, I just need to keep reminding you guys, this never gets any more okay.

Falcomon: “First they tell us they want to protect the Digimon, then they hurt us!”

This is unchanged, but it sticks out a lot more to have such an incredibly childish logical fallacy coming from such an adult-sounding voice.

Kudamon: “Falcomon. Let me explain.”

Kudamon: “Falcomon. The history’s a complicated one.”

I don’t know if I should appreciate the fact that the dub is trying harder to make it seem like Kudamon’s attempting to address Falcomon’s confusion regarding humans, or if it just makes the ensuing infodump about only DATS, which is far from the biggest reason all of this is very complicated, seem even sillier.

Kudamon: “We were proud of what our organisation accomplished. Unfortunately, all that hard work seems meaningless in the wake of these recent and tragic events.”

In the wake of these events that have been significantly caused by the very Director of DATS; yes, every single part of this organisation was something for us to be proud of, for sure.

Gaomon: “But now that our masters’ memories have been erased, DATS’s responsibility has been shattered! We’ve lost our purpose to fight.”

Gaomon: “Sad… Now that DATS has been dissolved, we’ll never see our human partners again. Memories are lost. They no longer remember anything about us.”

Gaomon’s weird phrasing aside, it’s an improvement, I think, that they changed what he’s feeling dejected about. They shouldn’t have given a damn about responsibility or purpose when there’s a goddamn genocide going on that they need to stop. The only reasonable argument to make them hesitate about fighting back should be the thought that their partners may never be able to remember them again.

Masaru’s school lesson in the original sounded like some kind of social studies class, but in the dub, it’s math. With this and his exams in that one episode all being made into math exams, apparently the dubbers think math is the only school subject that exists.

News announcer: “After two weeks since the government imposed martial law in response to the appearance of the large monsters, they have officially announced that it will be rescinded as of today.”

News announcer: “It’s been two weeks since the last appearance of the mysterious monsters. The government has officially declared martial law against them as of today.”

This complete turnaround of what’s happening with the martial law – just begun instead of just ended – isn’t actually going to affect anything plot-wise. (For once, the dub making a casual thoughtless change to something that should seem plot-related isn’t going to cause a huge mess!)

So I guess all this does is somewhat shift the tone of how Kurata’s ongoing war with the Digimon is coming across to the public. Instead of being all “hey, look, you can go back to your normal lives now thanks to Kurata, he’s a hero!”, it’s more “be afraid of Digimon, they are scary and dangerous and totally still out to get you”. I can see worlds where Kurata would believably go for either of these, so, hey.

(Though it does beg the question of why the hell it took the government two weeks to decide hey maybe we should impose some kind of restrictions to keep the public safe from these monsters that just attacked.)

News announcer: “…by Professor Kurata, the newly-appointed assistant director of the National Security Council.”

Aha, here we go. The dub has given Kurata some kind of governmental affiliation that will explain where he gets all of the influence and resources to do all of this stuff he’s going to be doing. This National Security Council will, from now on, effectively serve the same narrative purpose as the Ministry of Confidentiality does in the original (except for with Hashima, because there’s no indication that he got appointed onto this council after firing his entire DATS workforce). They have finally realised this is a huge glaring plot-hole and done the best they could to salvage it.

News announcer: “After holding a conference with him, the government has expressed much admiration for his strategies.”

News announcer: “Kurata is assuring the public that he can combat this great threat to mankind’s safety…”

Given that in the dub the martial law has only just begun instead of ended, and the public only has the word of this newly-appointed dude that things are going to be okay, I don’t think Kurata would be seeming like quite as much of a heroic figure in this version, no. Not that it really matters either way.

Agumon: “I’ve had enough of this moping around. So DATS is gone? The Boss needs me for a lot more than just fighting! He needs me for me! I’m his best friend, and that’s not gonna change just because he doesn’t fight bad guys any more!”

This is all very adorable, but the reason Gaomon was moping here was less about DATS being gone and more about the fact that their partners don’t remember them, which Agumon is completely failing to acknowledge in this rebuttal. I appreciated the dub changing Gaomon’s line to try and make this whole bit make a little more sense, but then of course they forgot to also change Agumon’s line to fit with it.

Also I’m still rolling my eyes at the dub’s insistence in reminding us that Marcus fights bad guys, look, kids, our protagonist who likes fighting people is fine actually because it’s definitely only bad guys that he fights, okay. Nuance in Masaru also doing a lot of fighting for the sake of bonding and communication? Nah. Obviously Agumon and Keenan were also totally bad guys when he fought them, right.

Agumon: “No matter how much we fought…”

Agumon: “No matter how many times I ate the last helping…”

Okay, geez, dub, way to explicitly paint things as if the episode we’re flashing back to had them falling out over the fried eggs and nothing else. No thanks.

Agumon: “No matter how many insults he threw at me…”

Hello audience, did you know Marcus is A HUGE JERKY MCJERKFACE who apparently constantly insults his best friend?

I mean, yes, the dub has been making Marcus into actively more of a jerk and I hate it, but I cannot think of a single time that has involved him throwing random insults at Agumon to the point that this is a thing Agumon would bring up here. Ugh I hate the way the dub insists on both making Marcus more of a jerk, but then also very lazily telling us we’re supposed to think he’s obviously a jerk even in ways that he literally isn’t. Just, why. Stop it. No.

This is also not giving a great message to the kids watching, which is a thing the dub apparently cares about based on other things they keep changing about Marcus. If your friend actually does constantly insult you, they’re a bad friend and you should ditch them!

My extreme irritation at that line aside, I do like the BGM the dub’s using for this moment. It gives a very uplifting feel to all these flashbacks about their friendship that makes the clip-show-ness of it slightly less noticeable.

In the dub of the boxing episode, some of the shots with Gaomon punching Togemon were flash-cut or removed entirely. The dub continues to prove that they do not care about consistency with their censorship and that apparently it would have been okay to include those shots in the first place, because they’re here in the flashback this episode, uncut.

I don’t know what possessed me to notice and go back and confirm this, but the lines that Thomas and Gaomon say in those flashbacks have slight differences to the earlier dub episodes they’re from (and not because of the cuts). Yet I’m also pretty sure that Marcus and Agumon’s lines from their flashback were accurate. Apparently they re-wrote and re-recorded some of those lines for this episode, but… not all of them???

Lalamon: “Yeah, we’ll be together forever!”

Falcomon: “Our hearts are one!”

Gaomon: “I’ll never let him down!”

The original had this shot where Agumon was there with a growing smile as he realised that everyone agreed with him, but it was kind of awkwardly silent. The dub fills this with these overlapping lines from the others. While they’re perhaps a little overly-cheesy, I can see what kind of mood they were going for and it more or less works, especially with the uplifting BGM I mentioned.

Just like in the original, Gaomon is now suggesting that maybe their partners will remember when they see them again, which seems a little odd coming from him when he was the one who was most pointedly upset about the idea that their partners don’t remember them as if it was impossible to undo. I guess the power-of-friendship spirit of the conversation simply got through to him and changed his mind into believing it was possible?

(But again, this is the dub’s attempt to fix something that was worse in the original, so I can’t really blame them for it still being a bit flimsy.)

Agumon: “What’s most important is protecting something at the risk of your life! That’s what a man does!”

Agumon: “The most important thing for me has always been protecting Marcus. I won’t let him down!”

Alas, of course we can’t have dub-Agumon emulating the dorky manliness, because the dub is allergic to manliness. I guess, given that, this replacement that just further emphasises the FRIENDS is a reasonable substitute.

Lalamon: “Of course you’d say that, Agumon.”

Gaomon: “I guess it’s not just your stupidity that resembles him.”

Lalamon: “That’s the best thing I’ve ever heard you say, Agumon.”

Gaomon: “Much better than the usual drivel that comes out of your mouth.”

Geez, guys. I know the dub had to change their reactions because they can’t comment on how Marcus-like that was of him (and I’m glad they remembered to do that and kept their change consistent), but yikes, that’s a bit harsh. Agumon can sometimes say things that are about protecting the people he cares about, you know.

Lalamon: “First, we need to find a way out of here…”

Lalamon: “Aren’t we forgetting that there’s no way out of here?”

Dub-Lalamon has a very good point there. That’s another far more pressing point of their predicament that the original didn’t really address, in favour of presenting it almost like the only reason they were staying put was through choice out of a weird sense of duty. I appreciate the dub effectively poking fun at that through their change in Lalamon’s phrasing.

Alarm: “A fire has broken out in the Digimon experimentation room!”

Staff member: “A fire has broken out in the Digimon containment centre!”

In the dub, it’s not the experimentation room, giving somewhat less horrifying implications about why Kurata was keeping them in there.

It was clearly some kind of automated alarm saying that in the original (which admittedly kind of begs the question of why DATS itself apparently considered that the “experimentation room”), whereas here it’s just some dude.

Gaomon: [coughing and spluttering from the smoke] “Next time you act, use your head!”

Agumon: “I did use my head! Where do you think the fire came from?”

This is some peak adorably-oblivious dub-Agumon and I love it.

Falcomon: “You’re crazy…”

Falcomon: “Are they always like this?”

They sure are. Come on, Falcomon, you’ve stayed at Marcus’s place, you must have realised this by now!

(Cute as this is, it does read as more adult that he’s implying he expects them to be more sensible most of the time. The usual dub-Falcomon flip-flopping between being a child with an adult’s voice and actually an adult.)

Kudamon: “Where’s Sampson?”

Megumi: “The National Security Council took him away…”

Finally we have an actual government body that it maybe makes some kind of sense for them to be treasonous against! I suppose simply siding with the apparently-super-threatening Digimon is something that could be spun as opposing national security, or something. Still a little bit of a stretch that Kurata would have enough influence to sell this to the council and get Sampson arrested already when he’s only just been appointed as their assistant director. But still, the dub is actually beginning to fix its mistake and fill in this plot-hole and I appreciate it.

Kudamon: “I see…”

Kudamon’s response should really be “the what?”, because the National Security Council has never been involved as a government body that’s been getting in their way until just now – and, as a Digimon, he may never even have heard of it – but, you know.

Marcus: “Hey! Frog monster!”

They kept Marcus calling Agumon a frog here. However, because they removed the bit in episode 1 where Masaru also called Agumon a frog, this isn’t a fun call-back to anything in the dub.

Masaru: “Cut the crap! I don’t remember letting someone like you call me his aniki!”

Marcus: “So what?! I don’t care what your name is, I’ve never met you before in my whole life!”

The dub removed the part where Masaru was dismissing Agumon on the basis that he’d surely remember letting someone call him Aniki, which is a slightly more interesting route to take. (And Agumon has been calling Marcus “Boss” in this scene.)

Marcus: “Hey, this is where I train to be an ultimate fighter! How did you know about this place?”

I am honestly surprised that the dub actually remembered that they changed episode 1 such that this park is apparently Marcus’s “training ground”. Props, I guess? This should make him slightly more willing to consider that maybe Agumon really does know him, since he knows about this place that’s important to him. (In the original, this place wasn’t important to Masaru outside of being where he met Agumon.)

Agumon: “You challenged me to a fight, and we duked it out, man-to-man!”

Mmmm, sort of. The dub wasn’t quite fully allergic to manliness in episode 1, and while they removed Masaru’s initial “man-to-man” line, they did add in a “this is a fight between men” a little later in the exchange, so, I guess, technically, this just about works.

I am bewildered as to why the dub is suddenly okay with keeping in this bit of manliness, though, when they usually go out of their way to remove it.

Marcus: “Man-to-man? We’re one short.”

But of course it can’t be any kind of meaningful manliness about the kind of person you are and being an honourable fighter in the dub, nah. Apparently Marcus just thinks it means “literally human” (and therefore probably also literally male). Remember when he didn’t give a damn about Agumon’s species and fought him like an equal opponent regardless? (Well, that part was also a bit watered down in dub episode 1, but it was still at least somewhat there.) Apparently the dubbers don’t.

Agumon: “Yeah! You stopped my blows without being afraid of me! You fought me seriously! […] I became your follower because I admired that about you!”

Agumon: “Listen. You didn’t know who I was when you first met me, but you weren’t afraid of me, either. You fought me real hard, blow for blow. […] That’s right. I admired that so much about you that I started calling you Boss.”

Hm, I was expecting to want to complain again about the part where, in episode 1, dub-Agumon started calling him Boss just because Marcus matched him in a fight and not because he treated him like a person. But I guess this is a pretty direct match to the original line, and that line was also kind of ambiguous as to whether Agumon was talking about Masaru’s fighting skills or his not being afraid of him. Still, given that this was different in the dub of episode 1, I guess we can assume that in dub canon, Agumon really is thinking more about the fact that Marcus matched him in a fight than the not-afraid part here.

…Did anybody want to be reminded of the part in episode 1 where Marcus called Yoshi “toots” and compared her to a babysitter? Because I sure didn’t, but unfortunately that’s the part we’re flashing back to.

You can also really tell that Marcus’s voice actor took an episode or two to settle into the role, because Marcus’s voice from episode 1 sounds noticeably more obnoxious and whiny than what we’re used to now. I’m very glad that stopped being a thing before long at all.

The flashback happens to not include the line where Marcus called this “a fight between men”, so for anyone who doesn’t happen to remember that very incidental comment from 25 episodes ago, Agumon’s “man-to-man” thing here probably sounds like something he just made up out of nowhere, especially since Marcus scoffed at it.

Agumon: “Did you really forget about me? Your follower?!”

Agumon: “Did you forget all that? Did you forget all about your faithful employee who would follow you anywhere if you just asked?”

The extra part the dub added to fill the lip-flap is cute, but this is also somewhat harder to take seriously when the we’re suddenly reminded that Agumon is the “employee” in this relationship. I’d thought they did a good job of deliberately rewording the earlier line so that he didn’t use that word at all to keep things less silly, but never mind.

Marcus’s expression of sudden realisation halfway through this line, like this is beginning to jog some memories, kinda reads like he’s reacting to the “employee” part, which is extra silly. Gasp, how could he forget that he had an employee, that’s obviously something that’d be important to him, right???

Lalamon: “Remember, Yoshino! The days when we lived together!”

Lalamon: “Remember, Yoshi? All those days we were roommates together?”

They were roommates, but calling it that feels like a bit of a downgrade of what their relationship means to them. It’s not like they bonded just because they happened to share a room; quite the opposite.

Masaru: “SHUT UP! I get so pissed off whenever I see your face! Just get lost!”

Marcus: “GO AWAY! When I see you, it just makes my head hurt! I never wanna see you again!”

Being less subtle in that Marcus is willing to directly admit that this is because seeing Agumon makes his head hurt.

That should also make this a bit less hurtful for Agumon, because he should be able to realise from this that the only reason his Boss is pushing him away is because of the memory-loss brainpain and not entirely his fault.

Agumon: “Aniki, you… IDIOT!”

Agumon: “Sorry, Boss!”

This is just as Agumon punches Marcus, and it completely changes the reason he does so. If he’s apologising before hitting him, then him doing so is a deliberate, calculated move that he is expecting to be able to restore his memory. Which is fine, I guess, but I found it a lot more interesting and nuanced that original-Agumon was just overcome with frustrated emotion and lashed out while never even having considered that punching his aniki was obviously the solution to this.

And I guess this also means that Agumon’s only in tears because he… feels that bad about having to punch Marcus to restore his memories? Seems a little off, though, because he knows his Boss can take a punch, and if he’s doing it deliberately then he has the time to consciously think about that fact.

Okay, yeah, this flashback includes the part where Agumon started calling Marcus his boss just because he matched him in a fight, so I guess there’s no getting out of that in this episode.

Agumon: “Aniki! Are you okay?! I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to…”

Agumon: “Boss! I’m sorry I punched you! I thought it might… help…”

Yep, none of the fun implications from how original-Agumon apologising and asking if he’s okay showed how he’s constantly worried about hurting Aniki, not if dub-Agumon did the punch on purpose to bring his memories back. I also don’t know if I even feel like Agumon needs to apologise for punching him if he genuinely believed it was the only way to bring his memories back. That’s more than worth the price of getting decked in the face just the once, especially if you’re Marcus!

Marcus: “Agu… mon…?”

Agumon: “You know me?”

Come on, Agumon, you were literally expecting the punch to help bring his memories back, you shouldn’t be this surprised when he shows proof that it did. His reaction here should be something more like, “It worked?”

Marcus: “Stop, Agumon! It tickles! Stop!”

This is as Agumon hugs him enthusiastically, and okay, that’s pretty cute.

Kurata: “Gizmon, get rid of them!”

Kurata: “Gizumon? Destroy them now.”

Dub, you had a perfectly good euphemism for “kill” already there in the original line; you didn’t need to awkwardly shove “destroy” in like always. Especially when one of the people Kurata’s trying to murder here is a human, and he wouldn’t think of that in the same way he thinks of “destroying” Digimon.

The dub had to edit the already-in-English screen informing Kurata “GIZMON -02.03 DISAPPEARANCE” just so that they could add in that extra U. Are you sure it wouldn’t have been easier to just keep Gizmon’s name the same, guys. It’s clearly a play on the English word “gizmo”, come on.

Masaru: “You both got back your memories too, right?”

Marcus: “I’m glad to see you guys got your memories back, too!”

This line was a little odd in the original to have Masaru asking, as if it wasn’t already obvious from them showing up with their evolved partners, so the dub change is an improvement.

Masaru: “Let’s go, Agumon!”

Marcus: “It’s good to be back, Agumon!”

I like this altered line, as he’s just punched a Gizumon. He’s so stoked to be back punching Digimon and can’t believe he ever forgot about it and returned to a life without it.

Tohma: “We’re not members of DATS any more. Are you all still willing to do this?”

Thomas: “Is it really a good idea for us to go to DATS headquarters? Remember, we’re not members of the Data Squad any more!”

The line here in the original lingered some more on that weird theme of them acting like their “duty to DATS” or whatever mattered even a single damn bit when they’ve got a goddamn genocide to prevent. The dub version changes the focus so that it seems like Thomas is only questioning whether they should specifically be going back to HQ, where they might get arrested or something now that they’re no longer officially allowed there. Much more sensible, thank you.

Yoshi: “We’ve come this far. There’s no turning back now!”

Though, Yoshi’s line, which is exactly the same as in the original, then seems a little odd to be referring specifically to Thomas’s question about going to HQ. It’s like she’s literally just saying “well we’ve run most of the way there already, so I don’t want to suddenly change my mind and go somewhere else”.

Marcus: “I don’t care if they arrest all of us afterwards, Kurata has to be stopped before he does any more damage!”

I think the thing Thomas is more worried about is that they might arrest you all before you can stop Kurata doing anything.

Masaru: “No way! Why is this…?”

Marcus: “Now what? Everything’s gone!”

This is Marcus’s immediate reaction to seeing the building blow up right in front of him. It’s a bit of a stretch that, instead of disbelief and confusion as to why this is even happening, he’s so quickly able to process and accept the fact that yep, welp, this means everything at DATS is gone now, guess that sucks.

Overall differences

This is mostly just a cute friendship episode, which the dub tends to be fairly decent with. There’s less nuance for them to mess up, though they still did mess up a few things, naturally.

Of course, since Hashima is in this episode, not a single thing about his role in the dub makes sense. The Director of DATS fires or arrests his entire workforce, thus putting himself out of a job, because the entire Data Squad (which should therefore include him) has turned against humanity. Sure.

At least this episode introduces the National Security Council as a government body that Kurata is now affiliated with, because it seems that the dubbers finally got the memo that the Ministry of Confidentiality matters to the plot, and so there ought to be an equivalent of it in the dub to explain where Kurata gets all his government backing for this Digimon genocide. I legitimately appreciate them at least making this fix – better late than never – and everything with the National Security Council from here on is going to make sense. (Except Hashima, who’s not a part of it as far as we ever hear.)

There was also a vague attempt made at improving the silly part in the original where Gaomon’s feeling all dejected because without DATS they don’t have a duty, as if that matters when there’s a genocide happening. Instead he’s feeling down about their partners having lost their memories, which actually makes sense. Some of the other lines around this weren’t edited properly to fit with it, but, well, this whole bit was awkward in the original anyway, so I appreciate at least the Attempt.

Some of the lines about their friendships are pretty cute as is often the case in the dub, but of course we needed to be reminded that Marcus Is A Jerk, right. Also the Manliness Police were sleeping on the job at one point this episode, but perish the thought that being a “man” could be anything about honourable fighting principles, nah, it just means “literally human”, according to Marcus.

Probably the thing that makes me the most sad is the change so that Agumon meant to punch Marcus to bring his memories back, rather than him having lashed out in a moment of frustrated emotion and then immediately panicking about hurting him while adorably oblivious to the fact that of course this was the solution. That was a fun bit of nuance about it in the original that got made a lot simpler and less interesting in the dub.
