Jenny Kee & Linda Jackson: Step Into Paradise (2019)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[3] Step Into Paradise (2019) [Exhibition] Powerhouse Museum, Ultimo. 17th October 2019 - 22nd March 2020.
Step Into Paradise (2019) is an exhibition that focuses on designers Jenny Kee and Linda Jackson, notable for their retail outlet Flamingo Park, established in 1973 in the Strand Arcade in Sydney where they sold not only the works of Jackson and Kee, but also other Australian designers like Peter Tully and David McDiarmid (Powerhouse Collection, N.D). Both designers are known for their distinctly ‘Australian’ style where many motifs and imagery of Australian nature and landscapes are featured in their garments. In addition to their designs being featured in their shop, Kee and Jackson also featured their designs in annual Flamingo Follies fashion parades with the help of collaborators. This exhibition is stated to be the “first major in-depth survey of the Australian designers and artists” (Fairley, 2019) with over 150 items including outfits, photographs, ephemera, and stories from over their four-decade career of “shaping an Australian narrative through fashion” (Fairley, 2019). Jackson and Kee’s work is displayed in a manner of different ways throughout the exhibition, with the viewer being taken through a series of rooms, accompanied with sound installations by Johnny Seymour and Nick Wales to create an immersive environment, each resembling a different part of the Australian Landscape including “the Great Barrier Reef, the Australian bush, opals and waratahs” (Fairley, 2019) and even a recreation of the Flamingo Park salon in which some of their most iconic designs like Kee’s I Love (1976)dress can be seen on display and embodies the working environment of the pair in addition to signifying the beginning of their iconic partnership. The display of both Kee and Jackson’s works together not only highlights their similarity in their use of Australian nature for inspiration but also showcases the different approaches they take in creating fashion as Kee’s designs consist of colourful knitwear whereas Jackson creates imagery and pattern using applique and patchwork in addition to the experimentation with the fabric using screen-printing, hand-painting and cut-work (Somerville, 2013). Visitors may also recognise some of the pieces that were on display as many of the duos works have been worn by popular designers like Karl Lagerfeld’s suit from the 1983 Chanel collection which featured Kee’s Black Opal print as well as British royalty as Princess Diana had previously worn the Blinky koala jumper which was knitted by Kee (Fairley, 2019). On the other hand, Jackson has created works for popular musicians like Marcia Hines (a hand-painted Gladioli dress) and has had her work featured in Vogue Living where Nell Schofield wore her Glacier Gown and Penguin Coat in Antarctica (Fairley, 2019). Overall, Step Into Paradise is an amazing example of how curators utilise retail settings associated with fashion, in this case it is Jackson and Kee’s history with their own salon, in order to help visitors to gain an insight into a designers surroundings and their creative mindset. Furthermore, by immersing their works into backgrounds directly related to the influences of their designs, the exhibition also does a great job of emphasising that not only are Jackson and Kee established designers but also artists.

Desperate employers struggle to find workers
“We have three months of backlog work on our more complex mechanical jobs where we cannot find employees with the in-depth knowledge required to complete these jobs,” he said. Virtue said the skill shortage was exacerbated by TAFE and private colleges not preparing apprentices “for what the real life of a mechanic entails.” Xanthe Ba-Pe trainee mechanic at CMR Automotive in Marrickville.attributed to him:Flavio Branclion Master Electricians Australia’s director of advocacy and policy Jason O’Dwyer said the national electricity shortage is expected to worsen after the transition to renewables. He said: “Some employers will not allow their students to receive orders from warehouses to prevent them from being stolen by competitors.” O’Dwyer predicts a shortfall of 25,000 electricians by 2030, with electricians, solar electricians, air conditioning and refrigeration in the toughest positions to fill. loading “We’ve seen employers offer some amazing incentives, like eight days, nine days two weeks, gym memberships, haircuts, and nights with their partner, as well as referral and sign up bonuses, which range from $1,000 to $10,000,” he said. Bars and restaurants also attract workers with cash and other incentives. The Sydney Restaurant Group is offering $5,000 sign-in rewards and free wine courses for managers, waiters, bartenders, baristas, chefs and kitchen staff at venues including Ormeggio at The Spit, Aqua Dining at Milsons Point and Cafe Bondi. Australian Venue Co. offers. Ltd., which operates venues such as The Winery, Bungalow 8 and Cargo, offers paid training, a $100 pub voucher, free lunch and a gift bag for successful “casting calls” applicants in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. loading Solotel last year began offering login bonuses of up to $1,000 and half price for food and drinks at places like the Opera Bar, Golden Sheaf Hotel and The Bank Newtown to new employees. Elliot Solomon, CEO of Solotel, said the incentive program “contributed significantly” to hiring employees. The hospitality group also introduced a minimum wage increase for eligible employees to July instead of October 1 as requested by the government. Rockpool Bar & Grill Executive Chef, Cory Costello said last year Sun Herald The restaurant was struggling to hire staff despite paying dishwashers $90 an hour on Friday and Saturday nights. loading Restaurant and Restaurant Australia CEO Belinda Clark said hospitality workers are paid “significantly above” regular bonus rates, with junior chefs attracting more than $100,000 a year. “One of my kitchen hands in Western Australia was poached by mines for $150,000 a year as well,” she said. “For baristas, it’s now normal for them to earn about $60 an hour on the weekends.” Clark said employers are offering more training to less experienced people “to make them able to work if they have not worked in the industry before.” But UFL Executive Director Dario Mojkic said hospitality remains an industry where workers are underpaid and poorly treated despite some places offering check-in bonuses and other incentives. “Hospitality employers cannot take jobs because the industry expects workers to work unrelated hours with no job security,” he said. The chief executive of the Australian Retailers Association, Paul Zahraa, said retail employers are offering login bonuses, discounts on products or pay for courses as job vacancies hit a record high of more than 46,000 in August, an increase of 14 per cent from the previous three. months. Fashion brand Nude Lucy is offering a $1,500 login bonus and $1,000 gift voucher as part of its offer to hire an area manager, while last year The Body Shop became one of the first major Australian retailers to adopt an open recruitment process and not ask for a resume. Subject or reference. “Labour shortages have been a problem for some time, even without the Christmas demand surge, as many retailers and small businesses in particular cannot trade at full capacity,” Zahra said. Online shopping, more than just  cheap..
Walk through my local mall on a weekday, in outer suburban Sydney, and you’d think it had closed. Foot traffic is down but most alarming, is the ack of ‘buzz’ — the sound of people, trolleys, registers and money changing hands. In 2019 and Australia’s low-interest rate, low unemployment economy, people are keeping their wallets closed.
Where are the people?
The death of retail has been imminent since online shopping became the norm.  Niche stores would be swept aside by the internet’s low overheads and convenience, but I see something different.  At my local mall, it’s the fruit shops, cafes and food outlets that are closing. Businesses that depend on other businesses to bring customers to them.  That tells me traffic through the entire centre is down.
Why’s this matter?
In the suburbs, malls are more than just shopping. People meet for food and coffee and bump into each other for a chat. They’re today’s town square, a shared space for communities. They’re a place for first jobs, where people new or returning to the workforce would pack groceries or stock shelves.
People build new homes with access to shops, so they anchor residential investment. Their performance drives property sector investment returns.  Sydney is an urban sprawl of 50km in every direction, take shopping centres out of that picture, and you destabilise 4 million people.
Tumblr media
Online shopping - is there an upside?
Sure there’s an upside.   Retail stores weight inventories toward the middle and there’s an advantage in broader selection. Outliers on the tall or short side, people wanting unusual fashion or even items outside the season, are best served online.  And there’s always the cost factor.  A friend at the gym says online shopping is the key to her finding time for work, study, kids and exercise, and never paying full price for clothes and shoes again! That’s hard for time and cash poor customers to go past.
Pros and Cons
Pros
Greater selection
Time savings
Cost savings
Cons
Disappearing social spaces
Disappearing entry-level retail jobs
Property sector impacts
What would the disappearance of local retail stores mean to you and your community?

Famous Muses & Groupies in Rock Music Pt. 35
GROUPIE: Jenny Kee (full name Jennifer Margaret Kee)
Jenny was born on January 24th, 1947 in Bondi, Australia to a Chinese father and Anglo Saxon-Australian mother. She was raised primarily in Sydney, and educated at Bondi Beach Public School and East Sydney Technical College. In 1965 when Jenny was 18, she moved all the way to London, England with aspirations of a fashion career. She quickly got jobs modeling and working in high-end retail, plus socialized as a mod in the Swinging London scene of the mid-1960s. In 1972, Jenny moved back to Australia and later opened her own clothing boutique called Flamingo Park in 1973. At the height of her career, she collaborated professionally with designer Linda Jackson on many clothing patterns. Jenny’s trademarks are bright red lipstick and her favorite flower, the waratah.
In her 2006 memoir A Big Life, Jenny claimed she fooled around with John Lennon when the Beatles stopped in Sydney during their 1964 tour. At the time, she was a 17-year-old music fangirl who successfully snuck into the band’s hotel floor with her friends after attending their concert. Jenny called the whole night ‘fantastic’ and even went as far as to give herself credit for John’s interest in Asian girlfriends (gurl…lmao). She also claims that her mom wasn’t mad when she got home the next day because her mom was naïve and starstruck. A few years later when she was a model, Jenny ran into John once more at the Speakeasy Club. He apparently instantly recognized her and remembered that weekend. In her book, Jenny reveals that she also hooked up with Keith Richards, Eric Clapton and Roger Daltrey while she was living in London. “If you’re going to be a groupie, might as well go to the top.”
As an adult, Jenny later married artist Michael Ramsden whom she has a daughter with, Grace. She also had a longterm relationship with another artist, Danton Hughes. In 1977, Jenny and Grace were survivors of the infamous Granville train crash, where 84 passengers were tragically killed. Presently, Jenny still designs and sells her own clothes. Besides A Big Life, she was also prominently referred to in Oz Magazine editor Richard Neville’s own 1995 memoir, Hippie, Hippie Shake. This book was attempted as a film biopic in 1998—with actress Nina Liu portraying Jenny—but ultimately ended up shelved and unreleased. A few links online erroneously state that Jenny died on June 6th, 2012. But she’s actually still alive, as she personally updates her social media with recent photos.
