The Best Neighborhoods in Sydney: Where to Stay on Your Visit

Sydney is one of the greatest cities in the world. It has amazing beaches, scenic shorelines, World Heritage sites, and top-notch dining. It’s a large city, and it’s very spread out.
So what are the best neighborhoods to stay in?
That depends on what you look for in a destination!
Each area of Sydney has its own vibe and highlights. Here are my thoughts on the best places to stay in the city. No matter which of these you choose, you can’t go wrong!

Best Neighborhood #1: The Rocks
Just north of Sydney’s Central Business District and on the harbor, this neighborhood offers great views along the waterfront. There are numerous historic buildings in the area, including several pubs.
The Rocks Markets is open each weekend, selling all kinds of treasures, including arts and crafts, jewelry and tasty treats. The area has tons of stellar restaurants, museums, and entertainment venues, which helps explain its popularity with tourists.
If you stay in The Rocks, make sure you dine along the waterfront!
Best Places to Stay in The Rocks
BUDGET: Sydney Harbour YHA – This hostel is in a great location, offering views of the harbour and the Opera House. The hostel is built in the old colonial area of the city, but has all the modern comforts of a good hostel. This isn’t really a party hostel, though, but rather a great place for travelers looking for a quiet stay. It’s great for families too!
MID-RANGE: Mercantile Hotel – Offering live music, free Wi-Fi, and all the standard ammentities you’d expect from a mid-range hotel. The Mercantile is located right near the Opera House, the Rocks Markets, and the Harbour Bridge. To top it all off, it’s also home to Australia’s longest-running Irish pub!
LUXURY: Four Seasons Sydney – Offering incredbible views of the harbour and the city — as well as incredible luxury — this is a great choice for anyone looking to visit Sydney in style. With a state of the art fitness center and wellness center and spa, you’ll be able to get pampered while you enjoy all that Sydney has to offer.
Best Neighborhood #2: Surry Hills
Southeast of the Central Business District, Surry Hills has traditionally been known as the best place in Sydney for fashion. The area is perfect for travelers who want to shop ‘til they drop, but its appeal is much broader than that. There are lots of unique, creative dining options, and many old warehouses have been transformed into classy art galleries and gorgeous homes.
The area is perfect for young travelers, foodies, and those wanting to experience Oxford Street, the longtime Gay Capital of Sydney.
Best Places to Stay in Surry Hills
BUDGET: Big Hostel – This hostel offers free breakfast, free Wi-Fi, free luggage storage, and late checkout — everything the budget traveler needs! They also have a full-equipped kitchen and promote eco-friendly practices (they have a service for donating old clothings and promote energy conservation and recycling).
MID-RANGE: Manor Boutique Hotel – This charming boutique hotel is located in a heritage building with antique furnishings. It’s conveniently located just 5 minutes from Oxford street where you’ll find plenty of bars and restaurants. Free breakfast is included too!
LUXURY: Little Albion – This luxury hotel is actually located in a heritage building that was once a former convent. It’s right near Central Station and only a short drive from Chinatown and Paddy’s Market. The hotel also has a rooftop terrace, lounge, free WiFi, and a complimentary breakfast each morning.
Best Neighborhood #3: Coogee
This little area with the funny name is perfect for travelers who want a beach vibe but not all the craziness of Bondi Beach. The area is super scenic and the ocean is calm and safe for swimming. This neighborhood is an eastern suburb of Sydney, but you can get to town on public transit in less than half an hour.
Coogee has a youthful and family-friendly feel. Sydney’s eastern East suburbs, youthful, family friendly. If your trip calls for a lot of beach time, this is a great option. There’s super snorkeling nearby at Gordons Bay, and be sure to check out the Wylie Baths — amazing rock pools perfect for swimming. The seaside town is known for its fish and chips, so be sure to give them a try too!
Best Places to Stay in Coogee
BUDGET: Mad Monkey Coogee Beach – This is a great budget hostel located right on the beach. They have a cool co-working space and there are plenty of bars and restaurants around as well. It’s not fancy by any means, but it gets the job done! Just keep in mind that it can get a little noisy, so don’t stay here if you’re looking for some peace and quiet!
MID-RANGE: Coogee Bay Hotel (Boutique) – This lovely boutique hotel is in a great location, located only 20 minutes from downtown and 20 minutes from the airport. It’s right beside the ocean, as well, and there is a restaurant and beer garden on-site.
LUXURY: Crowne Plaza Coogee Beach – This incredible hotel boasts panoramic views of the ocean, a heated swimming pool, 2 bars, tennis courts, and a fully-equipped fitness center. It’s a spacious hotel with ultra-modern rooms, and there are lots of great seafood restaurants nearby as well.
Best Neighborhood #4: Darling Harbour
This area of town is best for families. This lively neighborhood is a huge tourist draw, as there are tons of attractions along the waterfront. The Sydney Aquarium and IMAX are here, and there’s all kinds of dining. The area’s clubs come alive at night and there’s lots of shopping. There’s also a Madame Tussauds, if that tells you anything.
If you’re travelling with kids, consider this neighborhood. If not, I probably wouldn’t stay in this Disney-like environment.
Best Places to Stay in Darling Harbour
BUDGET: Siesta Sydney – This budget-friendly hostel is clean, located in a great location, and has really friendly staff. They have free towels, free Wi-Fi, a fully-equipped kitchen, and laundry facilities.
MID-RANGE: Glasgow Arms Hotel – This charming hotel is located above a beautiful old pub. Free breakfast is served all day long and the hotel is just a 5-minute walk from Darling Harbour.
LUXURY: The Darling at The Star– This is a massive, luxuorious hotel home to a spa, casino, and over 20 bars and restaurants. Pamper yourself in their Turkish bath or enjoy a swim in their scented outdoor swimming pool — that also has its own bar!
Best Neighborhood #5: Bondi Beach
Bondi Beach is world famous. Once you see the iconic beach, you’ll understand why: The amazing views of the Pacific, the seafood restaurants along Campbell Parade, the happening nightlife! This is a great place for backpackers and those looking to party.
But it’s also a good base for beach couples, as well. Bondi is not right in the heart of the city, but public transit is a piece of cake. This area appeals to a younger crowd, and you’re sure to see surfers in the water, sun worshippers on the sand, and adventurous sorts hiking the scenic coastal trails.
Best Places to Stay in Bondi Beach
BUDGET: Bondi Backpackers – If you love the beach, you can’t beat this place! There’s a great rooftop space overlooking Bondi Beach and the hostel offers free surfboards. There are also free yoga classes, walking tours, and other fitness activities. If you’re there Friday night, don’t miss the BBQ party on the rooftop!
MID-RANGE: Ultimate Apartments (Bondi Beach) – Located just a 7-minute walk from the beach, Ultimate Apartments offers studio apartments with free parking. They have kitchenettes so you can cook some of your own food, as well as an outdoor pool onsite. The rooms are spacious and the beds are comfy!
LUXURY: Hotel Bondi – With views overlooking the beach, this boutique-style hotel has both private and shared balconies, as well as some deluze rooms with kitchen facilities if you want to cook your own meals. There is a restaurant onsite, the showers are great, and the staff is incredibly helpful.
Best Neighborhood #6: Central Business District
Sydney’s CBD is the heart of it all. It’s a huge area filled with skyscrapers, business, banking, and commerce. But it’s not only for the suit and tie set. This area has tons of attractions, including the Opera House and Royal Botanic Garden.
The neighborhood is generally pretty pricey, but the location may be worth it. The city’s best dining is here, as are the poshest hotels and chicest art galleries. You won’t find a lot of quirky shops, flea markets, or vintage treasures, but you will feel the excitement of big-city living!
Best Places to Stay in the Central Business District
BUDGET: Base Sydney – There aren’t many budget options in this part of the city when it comes to accommodation, so Base will likely be your best choice. They have free Wi-Fi and an on-site bar, making it a great place to have fun and meet people.
MID-RANGE: Park Regis City Centre – With a rooftop pool and views overlooking the city, this is a great mid-range hotel offering value above and beyond the pricetag. The location is perfect and allows you easy access to all of the main attractions in the city, and they also offer a free airport shuttle as well.
LUXURY: Sheraton Grand Sydney Hyde Park – This hotel overlooks Hyde Park and boasts an indoor swimming pool, rooftop fitness center, a free airport shuttle, and amazing restaurants and room service. It’s the perfect place to pamper yourself in the heart of the city.
Best Neighborhood #7: Paddington
If you’re looking for a quiet place to stay in Sydney, Paddington is one of my favorite neighborhoods. It’s between the CBD and the beaches, so you can get anywhere pretty quickly via bus. This eastern suburb is mainly residential, with beautiful tree-lined streets and Victorian homes with cute balconies. There are upscale restaurants, lively pubs, and prestigious art galleries as well as funky shops.
The area is known for the Saturday Paddington Markets at the Uniting Church. Centennial Park is a great place to relax in the outdoors. This isn’t the best neighborhood if you are looking for extensive nightlife and party options, though.
Best Places to Stay in Paddington
BUDGET: Arts Hotel – Budget options in this area are few and far between, so Airbnb might be your best choice. If you’d prefer a hotel, try Arts Hotel. It’s located right on Oxford Street and have a cool garden, swimming pool, and free bikes to use.
MID-RANGE: Airbnb – There aren’t any great mid-range options in this area so I’d try Airbnb for a middle-of-the-road option. Just be sure to book in advance as the best places disappear fast!
LUXURY: Mrs Banks Hotel – This hotel is actually located in a former bank. It has a very chic vibe and the rooms are all well designed. There’s free Wi-Fi and breakfast included as well.
Best Neighborhood #8: Manly
Manly is a suburb of Sydeny located just north of the city. It’s is famous for its amazing beach, giant waves, surfing, and wild nightlife. The area has a completely different vibe to it than the central city; it’s a part of town that knows how to have a good time. A lot of tourists actually miss that part of the city as it is a bit out of the way. But don’t let that stop you — it’s worth the short ride to get here. In fact, it’s one of my favorite areas of the city! You’ll also find some gorgeous coastal walking trails on this side of the harbor too.
Best Places to Stay in Manly
BUDGET: Manly Backpackers – This is your classic backpacker hostel, with a great social vibe and lively nightlife. The staff are super helpful and fun and can help you make the most out of your trip. Don’t expect the most neat and tidy hostel as there are many long-term backpackers here and the place can get a little messy. But what it lacks in cleanliness it backs up for in price and atmosphere!
MID-RANGE: Novotel Sydney Manly Pacific – Located right across from Manly Beach, this hotel is in the perfect location for those looking to balance soaking up the rays on the beach with Manly’s wild nightlife. The hotel has a fitness center and rooftop pool, as well as a nice bar and free breakfast (including certain rooms). You’ll get some great views here too!
LUXURY: Designer Studios Manly – As soon as you arrive, you’ll notice the little touches that make this hotel stand out. Not only is there free Wi-Fi, free parking, and a free airport shuttle but you’ll also be gifted free wine and sparkling water on arrival. The staff can also provide picnic blankets in case you want to go out and relax in one of the citys many parks or beaches (which I suggest you do!).
Best Neighborhood #9: Kings Cross
Located North of Paddington and east of the downtown core, Kings Cross is another party district for any nightowls looking to have fun. It’s wild and cheap, and you’ll find a good mix of both backpackers and locals here. The famous World Bar is where most of the action happens (it’s home to cheap drinks and a large dance floor). If you’re not a backpacker or not looking to party, this probably won’t be the place you wan’t to stay during your visit.
Best Places to Stay in Kings Cross
BUDGET: Hump Backpackers – This is a social hostel where the staff host plenty of fun daily activities to help you meet people (like BBQs, beer pong, and pancake breakfasts). There’s a free breakfast included, all-day coffee and tea, and a different activities each and every night. The beds here are quite comfortable, the bathrooms and showers are kept clean, and lockers in each room are huge. The hostel is surrounded by lots of restaurants and shops, as well as a few bars, so there’s a bunch of things to do in the area. Note: you have to be 18-35 years old to stay here.

While Sydney is a big place, it’s not overwhelming. You should be able to hit all the highlights in one trip. Of course, this is by no means an exhaustive list of places to stay – these are just my favorites!
I really like quite a few of these areas, so maybe you’ll want to experience several neighborhoods — stay in town several nights, then move to Bondi Beach or Coogee to get a feel for the surf. To me, that’s the best of both worlds.
But no matter where you stay, I’m confident you’ll enjoy the city and have an amazing time in Australia!

Find a cheap flight by using Skyscanner or Momondo. They are my two favorite search engines because they search websites and airlines around the globe so you always know no stone is left unturned.
Book Your Accommodation
You can book your hostel with Hostelworld. If you want to stay elsewhere, use Booking.com as they consistently return the cheapest rates for guesthouses and cheap hotels. I use them all the time. My favorite hostels in Sydney are:
Hump Backpackers – This is a social hostel with free breakfast, all-day coffee and tea, and different activities every night. The beds are comfy and soft, showers are kept clean, and the room lockers are huge.
Lord Wolseley – This hostel is located on the upper floors of a historic bar and restaurant that has been around since 1881. Its location near Chinatown and Central Station makes it one of the cheaper places to stay in town. Darling Harbour is just a five minute walk.
Asylum Backpackers Hostel – Asylum is close to Kings Cross station, and it’s just a 30-minute walk to the Opera House and the Botanic Gardens.The dorms are spacious and there are common areas inside and outside and free breakfast each day.

Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. Black Friday 2017 sales are here
IT’S that time of the year again.
China’s Singles Day online shopping event has come and gone, turning over the GDP of a small European nation, Click Frenzy more or less managed to happen — now it’s up to the Americans and Brits to “show me what you got”.
November 24 marks Black Friday, named after the blackness of our collective souls, the global shopping phenomenon which grew out of the US tradition of going to the shops to beat the s**t out of strangers to release pent up stress from spending Thanksgiving with your relatives.
Together with its younger sibling Cyber Monday, the online shopping extravaganza saw shoppers spend nearly $US8.4 billion last year. In recent years, retailers in the UK and Australia have increasingly gotten on board.
In theory, Black Friday should start at 4pm AEDT on Friday, or midnight US time, but many retailers such as Amazon, Macy’s and JCPenney now offer deals all week. Australian retailers, anxious not to lose too much business overseas, are also offering some pretty good deals already.
If the overseas retailer doesn’t ship to Australia, you can sign up for Australia Post’s ShopMate parcel forwarding service. According to a survey by comparison website Finder.com.au, around one in five Australians are planning to hit the Black Friday sales this year.
“The severe price cuts that come with Black Friday have been known to send bargain hunters into chaotic shopping brawls overseas,” said Finder.com.au money expert Bessie Hassan.
“While that is the extreme, December is notoriously the most expensive time of year, so these sales are a great opportunity to save on Christmas shopping.”

Eliza Rogers, aka Primula Floral Styling was always drawn to flowers as a teenager. But it was discovering the incredible floral artworks in the New York events scene that really excited her. This exciting ‘new era of floristry’, of large scale sculpture and installation, was what inspired Eliza to explore floristry as a career.
Eliza is passionate about creating a more sustainable future for the floristry industry, and since moving to Hobart is excited about being directly connected to the local growers. She explains ‘there’s no flower market in Tassie, so instead I have a network of local growers who I source my flowers from.’
Beyond hoping for a floristry future that is ‘a little more wild and weedy’, Eliza also shares her botanical expertise through ‘The Hosting Masterclass’ series, where she shows students how to ‘go beyond the traditional “flower arranging” realm.’

Petra Cremming of Pomp and Splendour found floristry while sleeping on the couch of a friend, whose housemate was a florist. After shadowing her for a few weeks, Petra was ‘completely enchanted!’ Her dramatic designs draw on her training in theatre, and she loves to work on large-scale projects that capture a specific mood.
She sees the future of floristry as moving towards ‘more sustainable floristry etiquette, with education around where our flowers are sourced and better farming practices.’

Sophia Kaplan has always been fascinated by nature, and in 2012 started her own blog for garden, flowers and design. Within a year, she had quit her job and moved to Paris to work for famed florist Guillon Fleurs, and after a stint back in Sydney with Jardine Botanic, launched her own business.
Sophia’s work is underpinned by a commitment to make the industry more sustainable, especially in considering the air miles that flowers have travelled, and the plastic packaging involved. Her work responds to the changing seasons, which means ‘you never have time to get sick of anything before it is replaced with another interesting specimen.’ It goes to show that sustainable practice delivers the best aesthetic results!

Gina Laska, the founder of Georgie Boy, was introduced to experimental flower design by Saskia Havekes of Grandiflora in Sydney. Now based in Melbourne, her vibrant installations are part of a move in the industry from ‘the more traditional bouquet to something that resembles an art practice.’
Gina highlights the #nofloralfoam movement and emphasis on sourcing local product as a major shaping the future of the floral industry. Georgie Boy’s pieces combine environmental responsibility with a love of colour and a careful consideration of the site the arrangement is designed for.

Hattie Molloy remembers the first time she felt like a ‘real florist’ was when she was given full creative freedom to design a runway installation for Melbourne Fashion Week. Hattie is excited about this ability to explore personal styles in the industry, as she explains ‘I think floristry can now be whatever you strive to make it.’
Based in Collingwood, her Ikebana-like sculptural work combines single stem flowers with non-traditional florist materials, and a deliberate lack of leafy foliage, to create innovative and unexpected results. For anyone hoping to get into the floristry industry, Hattie encourages ‘be confident in creating a style that is individual, personal and unique to what already exists.’

Melanie Stapleton of Cecilia Fox needs little introduction. Perhaps it’s a little cheeky to put her on a list of ’emerging’ florists, as several of the other florists on this list mentioned her as a guiding influence in their own practice! She explains that her Melbourne-based business started small, ‘slowly doing weekly flowers for a few retail stores out the back of a van’, later on working from her garage.
Now with a small team, based in a warehouse in Brunswick, Mel is ‘hopeful that floristry will head back to its roots, celebrating the wild abundance of nature, and being an ambassador for the natural world.’
For aspiring florists, she offers this brilliant practical advice, ‘Learn how to drive a van, don’t look at Pinterest, cultivate bravery and resilience, lift some weights and practice using a broom.’

Never in my life have I felt so thankful for my place in this universe. My whole year being 21 years old was spent unencumbered and unattached, yet was so rich and fulfilling. Of course full of aggravation, grief and downright feeling sorry for myself, but how does one free themselves of these feelings completely? They can’t.
The phenomenon that is Mark turned my entire being upside down and inside out. The removal of him from social media a few months ago was not an easy feat, but something that had to be done as to stop the temptation of the late night messages that plagues so many of us. And thank god. Because every time I did it got me no where, except for that little bit lower in the esteem and pride scale. I still think about him every so often and wish- oh how I wish- that things were different but in due time it will all be but a memory. Positive or otherwise, a memory nonetheless.
If you’ve ever cared about your grades at all, and you take an exam that you believe you can do well in and you sit the thing, and walk away fully aware that you could get HD/A or F but even when you get the F you realise you weren’t prepared for that caliber of disappointment at all then you might know what it feels like to ask someone out and have them say no. Better yet, if you’re actually set on the High distinction, there’s no doubt in your naive mind that there could be any other outcome but sure enough, there is: you fail. Then I suppose that is kind of like what I have felt for the past 10 months.
How I care about him at all after so long is curious. He’s really God’s gift in my eyes or it’s the whole ‘rejection breeds obsession’ thing. Not too sure yet.
Half the time that I ever spent this last year wanting to neck myself I attribute to MDMA and the god damn frequency of my ingestion of the stuff. My relationship with it was more intense than I’ve had with any living person in a while, unfortunate as that is. It was sudden, fast paced and abrupt. The whole time I knew it was bad for me, but of course that realisation couldn’t stop me, nor could simply wanting to stop. Though I’m not too sure of that either cause’ I never really wanted to stop to tell you the truth. I knew it was a problem but thought it was one that I could sustain for the foreseeable future- says every person that has had a habit ever. In that time I worked two jobs and was earning more than I ever had yet my expenditure was equal to that amount, in some cases more. Now I don’t have anything to show for it but memories of an entire lifetime crammed into the space of one year. Was it worth it?
Yes.
I quietly ‘checked out’ from my uni degree long before I officially made the decision to cease the thing more than halfway through. Many friends requested to film my folks’ reaction to the news because it was predicted to be hilariously catastrophic but when the time came, there was no time to get my phone out. The night before I had been with a friend on one of our seemingly innocent pursuits of debauchery. On this night we had obtained drugs from fellow participants of a party in the middle of some park in St Peters. We got a tip off from a guy that I had coined ‘Red Hat Rob’ in which we’d attended a similar gathering a few weeks prior. Ended up at his mates and without sleep, I gathered my belongings at about 8am and made my way home to fanatic parents who wanted to know why the hell I was out all the time and what I was doing with my life, if anything anymore and I told them I’m through with nursing, I have what it takes to be a police officer.
It actually seemed plausible in my mind at the time. It makes me wonder about the concept of sanity. If all this seemed so normal then and I think I’m normal now, then who the hell knows what’s what with anything.
So I continued in this fashion for the next four months. The tension between myself and my parents was so unbearable to me that the week prior to my departure to Thailand I avoided them altogether. I stayed with a guy that I’d met on New Years Eve and ended up in bed with after a drug fueled rampage and my best friend and I’ll never forget their hospitality during this time. I thought the situation would settle after I’d been overseas for two weeks fending for myself for the first time in my sheltered life. But things were erratic as ever.
After I’d exhausted all my other possible avenues for scoring pills, I asked an ex boyfriend from about seven years ago if he could for me. Upon our meeting I discovered he was in fact a drug dealer. I thought I’d struck gold and had found a regular source. How wrong I was.
My friend had accompanied me to a gig on Oxford Street one night and we had one of the pills I had obtained each. For a few hours after, things were seemingly normal. Though my sense of time that night was quite askew, hours may be generous. I had come to expect a feeling of being in between high out of my mind and being sober whenever I took anything at this point. I only felt the desired effect less than half of the time which could be for a number of reasons. After moving on to a warehouse party things began to turn. We both felt lethargic and confused. She asked me what it is that I wanted to do and I said “I want to stay here forever and ever”. I couldn’t envision a moment ahead of me in which I wasn’t sitting in that very spot, with the same group of people even though I wasn’t even particularly enjoying myself. Eventually we hijacked it back to my house and in the same breath of telling her that I wanted to be sick the entire way home, I threw up copiously. Once inside, I noticed that there was something on the mat by the front door and bent down to pick it up. I discovered that it was the street light shining through the door. There was nothing there. Even more bizarre yet, when I got into bed and closed my eyes, i began to see faces of people that I knew which morphed into terrifying, demonic and ever so vivid faces with bared teeth that threatened to engulf me. I quickly opened my eyes but the images were stamped on my pupils and they wouldn’t go away. I had never experienced any kind of hallucination before and I had no idea what was happening to me or how long it was going to last. Til the morning? Til I go insane and end this whole thing? But sure enough, when I woke up a few hours later, I could see like I normally would on any normal day. When I looked at myself in the mirror, what I did see in front of me was positively alarming. A bruise, purple and pink, the size of my hand on the side of my thigh. I had felt no pain during the night before. But that bruise had to be a result of something extremely painful. It didn’t add up. I quickly got myself together and went to a first birthday party for someone who I love so much, feeling like a ghost of myself. I almost find it laughable. The situations I get myself in.
I turned the events of that night over in my mind, examined them, for weeks after and couldn’t believe the danger I had put myself and my friend in. How I trusted the person that sold it to me. I didn’t know what the hell was in that capsule and thanked the powers that be that I was alive to wonder at all.
Shortly after, on a normal Wednesday night in April, I found myself sitting on the side of the road with my dearly loved companion in crime, after getting ejected from numerous bars in Sydney for bringing in outside alcohol. This was not the first time that we had employed this money saving tactic and had gotten so drunk that it was impossible to conceal the prohibited bottle of our choosing. Suddenly, she got to talking to a passerby and their topic of discussion was one that I could hardly believe. It involved the attainment of something that I knew ought not to be meddled in or even inquired about. The scene startled me.
I got the two of us away from there as fast as possible. The destination was Kings Cross where we were to meet the person she was involved with, who I’d considered a friend until I considered him someone not worth a second of my time. I was fairly successfully ignoring him as hard as everyone was making it for me to do so- even her. I eventually had enough, so much so, I ventured home alone. All I wanted was to keep a lid on the container of disaster but it wasn’t appreciated and it wasn’t my job anyway.
On my way to the station I stopped at a convenience store for a pack of cigarettes. There was a man at the counter smoking a lit cigarette which I regarded as wonderfully rebellious.
“Right on, man”
“Wanna buy any weed?” he asked me.
“Sure.”
So from then on I replaced MDMA with the casual use of marijuana. It was something that didn’t wreck absolute havoc with my mind and body and it was something that I didn’t kill myself to obtain cause it was much easier to get but mainly cause I wasn’t so damn crazy about it.
Without even realising, I was drifting further and further away from the personal hell I had created for myself. And though it was just just that: chasing after someone who didn’t want me back, chasing drugs that made me sick and fighting with my parents, I was happier than I’d ever thought possible. I found something to be thankful for every day. I was doing the best I could and because of that I would do it all over again the exact same way; the terrific and the terrible.

As I travel around the world I visit and enjoy many places. I have been to Manchester several times, but this time I saw it in a new light. Please see Hazel Thompson’s article below on the changes in Manchester over the last sixty years.
I have never been to Calcutta, but I hope to go there in the future to work with Kartikey Shukla and Sylvia Das. Kartikey is an architect and Sylvia is an IT expert. I am enormously impressed that they have both given up their very competitive professions to teach tai chi. A bright and enthusiastic couple, they are doing wonderful things to help the people of India, and they report on their progress in this issue.

I was born and raised in Manchester, England, in the working-class suburb of Rusholme, which to me seemed quite an unremarkable area. Recently I discovered that Emmeline Pankhurst was born in the neighbouring suburb of Moss Side in 1858. A political activist, she became the leader of the suffragette movement and coined their rallying cry “Votes for Women”. In 1999 Time magazine named her as one of the most important people of the 20th Century, stating “she shaped an idea of women for our time, she shook society into a new pattern from which there could be no going back”.
Back to the 70s, when I won the scholarship for the exclusive Loreto College Convent Grammar School for Girls. The Headmistress, Mother Victorine, was fond of telling us that we were the crème de la creme and that a “Loreto Girl” could achieve anything she desired. The school was in Hulme, a rather less select area, and, crème de la creme or not, we day girls navigated a risky path to and from the convent daily. A Loreto hat or scarf was a highly prized trophy amongst the less fortunate local teenagers, and we sustained many bruises and the occasional black eye as we defended our uniforms and ourselves.
Part of the curriculum was elocution lessons, so by the age of 12 I had lost my Manchester accent, which was replaced with a rather more refined Queen’s English, much to the bafflement of my parents. Imagine my delight, many, many years later at the 10th Anniversary workshop in Sydney to meet Anastasia Yianni, a Master Trainer candidate from Melbourne. Like Professor Higgins I recognised her Mancunian accent as coming from the square mile in which I had grown up, and we quickly established that we grew up just a couple of streets apart. At 21 we both married and moved to Middleton–again just streets apart. The years melted away and our accents became more pronounced as we reminisced about our childhood in Manchester.
We walked all around Sydney Harbour talking non-stop. We sang jingles from tv ads “Anytime, anyplace, anywhere, there’s a wonderful world you can share, it’s the bright taste, the right taste of Martini). We remembered our favourite TV programs–The Woodentops, Bill and Ben, The Clangers and the still-going Blue Peter. All classics in our eyes.
I am now back in Manchester for Dr Lam’s workshops. Yesterday we went to the Midland Hotel for afternoon tea, and it came back to me that in my early 20s my friends and I would visit the Tommy Duck’s public house, built in 1896, which was directly across the road from the Midland, standing in the midst of demolished buildings. Legend had it that the sign writer was commissioned to paint the landlord’s name, Thomas Duckworth, but ran out of room.
On the site now is a Premier Inn, but back then the Tommy Ducks featured coffee tables made from glass-topped coffins and a large collection of ladies’ briefs nailed to the ceiling. The landlord would offer a free drink to any female of any age who would remove her undies at the bar. (Please remember this was the 80s, sexism had yet to be discovered!) Female students quickly caught on and would don two pairs, hence retaining their modesty whilst enjoying a free beer. Not only students–there were some rather voluminous garments up there! Personally, I preferred to pay for my drinks.
As Manchester city centre became more developed a preservation order was applied for but ran out at midnight on February 12th, 1993. The council offices were closed, and the bulldozers moved in at 3 am before anyone could reapply. By the next morning the site was completely cleared, and it was then referred to by the locals as the pub that disappeared in the middle of the night.
During the workshop we are staying in the fashionable area of Salford Quays, a very pleasant and prosperous area, full of cafes, and designer shops. Wind back to my teens when the area was part of the Manchester Docks complex, including the Manchester Ship Canal. Other major ports in Manchester were bombed extensively during the Blitz, so Manchester became the UK’s third busiest port, and employed a great many people.
The emphasis was on industry, rather than atmosphere, and the water was dank and polluted, with many semi-derelict warehouses crumbling along the canal. During the 1970s containerisation was introduced and the increasing size of freight-carrying ships meant they could no longer navigate the ship canal. This, combined with increased trading with Europe and the east, saw the use of Manchester Docks decrease and many jobs lost.
Recognising the need to redevelop the area, Salford City Council purchased the docks in 1984 using a derelict land grant. The Salford Quays Development Plan was adopted in May 1985, proposing complete reclamation and development of the area for commercial, residential and leisure use. Subsequently, it became one of the largest urban redevelopment areas in the UK, with beautifully landscaped canals, peaceful walks and the Salford Wake Park where people can learn to water ski and wakeboard in the middle of the city, towed by sophisticated pulleys which eliminate the noise and damage caused by speedboats.
The water has been extensively cleaned and aerated, and fish now thrive there, along with geese, swans, ducks, kingfishers and herons. Foxes and bats can be seen at dusk around the designer apartments. It is home to the BBC Television Studios, Independent TV and Media City. All in all, I find it totally unrecognisable from the Salford of my teens!
The painter LS Lowry was born in a prosperous area of Manchester, but a change in fortune meant that his family moved to Pendlebury, a more industrial area. To help make ends meet, Lowry left school at 16 and clerked at an accountancy firm. Lowry was never a full-time artist, in his early twenties he took a job as a rent collector, which lasted for forty years. Given his day job and the seemingly naïve style of his paintings, it was long assumed that Lowry was self-taught. However, he did take evening classes in painting and drawing at the Salford School of Art and Municipal College of Art.
I confess I was never a Lowry fan, but he did document a different way of life with his paintings of workers leaving the factory gates as the whistle blew, and grim northern scenes. He has certainly left his mark on Salford though, with the Matchstick Man restaurant (named after his stick-figure paintings), the Lowry Theatre and even the Lowry Outlet Mall.
His work was well recognised and exhibited, and he was even offered a knighthood in 1968, which he turned down, telling the Prime Minister at the time, Harold Wilson: “All my life I have felt most strongly against social distinction of any kind”.
Manchester may have changed quite dramatically in appearance, but I’m happy to report that the locals are as friendly as ever, with a great sense of humour. Also, the fish, chips and mushy peas are still the best in the world, no arguments permitted.

A Letter to Dr Lam

It’s hard to believe that the USA Annual Tai Chi Conference at the Pacific University was just 2 months ago. I am still on a High Energy from all the practice… It seems only a few days ago after the arrival on Friday, that we were getting ourselves ready for a weekend of the Pre-Conference and the Forms 24 with you Dr. Lam and all the instructors, where we were able to meet and practice with almost all the instructors, including you. What a feeling that Saturday and Sunday, the feeling was AWESOME, and I mean it in every sense of the word.
Sunday afternoon where the Demos and pictures and just simply great all around. I cannot tell you how much your instructional DVDs of Tai Chi have help me overcome my Arthritis and improve my health at the same time. It’s follow your lead and practice, practice… My humble thanks to all the people and in the background in helping you put this wonderful workshop/conference together.
Now comes Monday morning meeting after breakfast and we are off to another tai chi adventure, this time it’s the “Exploring the Depth of Sun Style 73 Forms”, so for the week, we would be under the watchful eyes of our Instructor Bill & Linda Pickett who guided us on tai chi journey thru the 73 forms. It was great that you join us or stop by to check on our progress as we continue to Saturday for all the demos and pictures and awards.
At some of the morning meetings, you did several demos that was Inspiring to me and truly You are the Master. The Talent show was very good and a nice change of pace for the evening. And the Dinner/Dance was a Great event for all of us… Then it was Sunday and it was time for me to catch my ride and go to the train station, and you were there to see many of us going home.
This was a special trip/adventure for many of us, certainly me, this was my 1st time with a group and a workshop. There is no goodbye with the Cherokee’s, only until We meet again. I will cherish this time/event at the Pacific University, it would be great to return here again.

“Inspiring Teaching Resource”
Teaching Tai Chi effectively is not only a marvellous and inspiring teaching aid for Tai Chi, but its principles can also be practised in everyday life. Doctor Lam’s simple and sensitive approach to facilitating a Tai Chi class has covered every scenario and type of student you would ever encounter. I feel so much more confident and enthusiastic to begin my own classes with the tools Doctor Lam has so generously shared in this masterpiece of Tai Chi knowledge. My daughter is a high school English teacher and uses many of the principles in this book when dealing with bored or disruptive students. She also employs the stepwise method for teaching in difficult areas that students are having trouble understanding. In my personal relationships I am finding it so much better to be able to ‘step back and absorb the incoming force’. There is just so much wisdom in this book, it should be on the best seller lists. Thank you, Doctor Lam, for sharing all your experience and wisdom.”

Tai Chi in Kolcata – Just Like That!

First things first, we are thoroughly enjoying our journey towards establishing Tai Chi for Health following in my city. Up until now, many people have joined hands, but we have never been this socially active. Things are changing now very slowly but surely.
We recently got in touch with a Yoga school here in Kolkata which had conducted Tai Chi/Qigong workshops as recently as January 2018. They get an instructor to fly in from the USA. We have also got Program Head of one Autism Management Center very interested in introducing Tai Chi, but as it is with everything, she must seek permission from her Directors, etc., so it may take some time. As we are approaching the most important festival in this region, which is in the third week of October, every new venture needs to wait until the festival is over. We are eagerly looking forward to November. Many new things may happen, and if they don’t, we are ready to keep working on it. There is such a variety of places that we are in talks with right now. A few seem to know about Tai Chi just enough to get in touch with us or respond enthusiastically if we have reached out first. There are more than a few cold responses, but generally because we could not get through to the right person. One of the very interesting calls we received recently was from a Jain Monastery, where the Chief Guru is keen to know about Tai Chi. Since the Guru doesn’t talk on the phone, a disciple called us, and he found us on the institute website. Isn’t that exciting? Tai Chi may find its way to a non-Buddhist monastery, which might be first at least in India.
Kolkata is a slow-moving city, so our Tai Chi ship is also tugging along, however slow it may be.
The class we started before January 2018 workshop had to be closed soon after we returned from Australia, but since April 2018 we have started several new classes. Some of those we had to close due to lack of audience, but on average we are teaching about 12-15 students per month. We hope to increase that figure November onward. It will be exhilarating to watch the future unfold, especially while being in the middle of it. We will keep you posted, as it gives us great happiness to communicate with you through any medium. I am enjoying writing this and may send more in future.
It has been just six or seven months since we have been really into it. From September 2017 to February 2018 we didn’t have any direction, and it took us two months of brainstorming and work to get few classes to start. Counting from April 2018 we believe we have made decent progress – it is really amazing how sometimes things work out and how sometimes they don’t. We in general never push anyone or anything too hard. I saw Denise Murray’s video and I was pleasantly surprised that Sylvia and I have been following most of the things she talked about. It is indeed a matter of great pride to be associated with the Institute!
Just yesterday one of my students, who is 78 years old, told me that he has a Defibrillator machine on his heart (also called an ICD) and I didn’t know that before. I was surprised to know that he also goes swimming with that machine. He never misses a class if he is in Kolkata, he is always smiling and eager to learn. There is another set of students who really haunted me to start a class in their neighbourhood. We may have just a handful of students yet, but all of them are inspiration enough to keep going on. One of my students recently dropped out despite liking the class very much. According to him, his knees are not able to sustain the 60-minute session. Also, he felt as if his knee pain has increased after the class. I was astonished to know that as not once he complained about his discomfort to me nor he ever took a break to sit and just observe. I mentioned that many times in the class as per my training to take rest if there is any sort of discomfort. I am still a little sad to lose a sincere student.
Sylvia is also completely free from her office commitments, very actively involved in this task we have on our hands. I would be lost without her.
We have been practicing regularly just as well, mornings are dedicated to practicing and evenings are for classes. We are yet to have morning classes, but we are planning to have some soon. As always, these things will take time.
I have learned Sword 32 forms the DVD we bought this year in Wollongong and now helping Sylvia to learn it too. Right before we returned to India in September 2017, we had few months of training on Sword form 51 with a teacher in Singapore, which helped us in learning quickly from the DVD. We are really enjoying that, I think having a sword in hand is slowly increasing our understanding of Sun 73 and Yang 24. Especially, Sun 73 has never felt same ever since we have returned from 20th-anniversary workshop. It may sound funny to some, but I think whenever I go out to practice among the trees early in the morning, I feel the trees around me are happy and filling me with positive energy. I myself try not to think too much on this.
A 23-year-old who is probably our best student here is hoping to be an Instructor. I have been training her keeping that in mind too. I really hope she can continue learning and get certified as an instructor, so we will have company – reaching out to 14 million people will be much better if our team increases! We still don’t have an idea how we are going to take it to Mumbai, Delhi and other places. But we have a firm belief that just like tai chi has made its way to Kolkata, we will find a way to take it to other parts of India, too. Just earlier today a guy called me from another state in India. He has learned a few things from the online lessons he could manage to get hold of. He follows you keenly considers you as his Guru, and he hopes to meet you sometime soon. The enthusiasm he talked with I think he can be another future instructor – we’ll see how it goes. It generally excites me if I can see a future instructor in someone, but we need to see how much people put their words in action. We are happy that we could keep our words true when we met you in May 2016 in Singapore, you may not remember, but we committed to do this in that Exploring Depth of TCA workshop you conducted.
It has been all good since that day, I still can remember how deeply moved we both were in that workshop. Each day since has been great, first learning Tai Chi followed by days trying to spread it in Kolkata. Each day has been different, and we are just going with the flow.

Douglas & Bec
Established in 2007, Douglas and Bec is a New Zealand-based furniture and lighting company led by father-and-daughter team Douglas Snelling and Bec Dowie. Today, they run showrooms in Auckland and Melbourne, showcasing their unique collection of timeless, contemporary furniture and lighting designs that hero old-fashioned craftsmanship.
Growing up on a farm in the north of NZ, Bec studied fine arts in Auckland. She spent her early 20s in Melbourne, working as a barista in Fitzroy, before returning home to launch and co-run the family business.
‘We had amazing feedback through blogs and media (such as yourselves) and so knew there was demand for our product in Australia,’ tells Bec of their motivation to branch into the Melbourne market. While Douglas & Bec were already stocked at a couple of Aussie retailers, being a sell-direct company was always a priority, so they wanted a presence on the ground. ‘It was really a no-brainer to set up: an opportunity arose with Julia from Dagmar Rousset to open a space next to hers in Collingwood. I was so familiar with the area, so I jumped on a plane the very next day!’ recalls Bec.
Bec does admit that logistics, shipping and maintaining a great team across two countries are the major challenges they have to work to stay on top of, and advises having a great accountant is a must! Overall, though, opening in Melbourne has been an overwhelming success for Douglas and Bec, and has allowed them to reach a much greater pool of potential customers and projects. ‘It’s such an inclusive industry; in both cities, there are creative and clever people supporting one another.’
Douglas & Bec is re-opening its Melbourne showroom on Bedford Street in late May. Coincidently, they’re actually working with our next NZ creative (below) on their new fit-out…!

Growing up in the small North-Island towns of Opotiki and Ohakune, Rufus Knight studied Architecture and Design at Victoria University in Wellington, where he also later taught. He relocated to Auckland to take up a job at Fearon Hay Architects, and had the opportunity to gain experience in Europe, working with Vincent Van Duysen Architects in Antwerp (that is a BIG deal!) as well as a Paris-based art publication.
The high-achiever decided it was time to launch his own Auckland practice in 2016. His team of three focuses on interior architecture and design, and has amassed some award-winning and much-hyped projects, including The International multi-residential building, and Lonely‘s flagship in Ponsonby, Auckland, as well as the NZ pavilion at the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale, and collaborations with Australian skincare empire Aēsop.
For Rufus, 31, it’s important to contribute to ‘a design language that is reflective of our cultural diversity’, with an understanding of how this design vocabulary can be valued in the global market. ‘It is clear to me that our greatest asset in communicating this diverse creative identity is through our native materials, and the inherent narratives they contain – materials have meaning, just like words, and we can speak through them’ he says.
Knight Associates are currently finishing up the commercial refurbishment of a Federation warehouse in Sydney’s CBD, in collaboration with Intermain and Paul Davies. Then there’s the new 120-square-metre Douglas & Bec Collingwood showroom, in collaboration with MUIR Architecture.
For Rufus, business growth in Australia has been welcomed but was not intentional, instead stemming from relationships with NZ companies opening in the Australian market. ‘Australia has such a strong and vibrant design culture, I can’t yet see how our office could add value to that,’ tells the humble director. ‘However, last year I was fortunate enough to be selected for the Dulux DIAlogue Tour (with the Design Institute of Australia and Designers Institute of New Zealand) where I got to discuss the differences and similarities between our design cultures with respected practitioners such as Miriam Fanning, Mim Design Studio, and Adele Winteridge, Foolscap Studio, from which I felt a sense of accord – we are similar design cultures tackling many of the same social, cultural, and economic challenges.’

Hailing from Whakatane, A small town in the middle of the North Island, Stacey Burt today calls Byron Bay home – though you may have seen her Warrandyte home (now on Airbnb!) which was one of our top 10 last year!
After training and working at a facialist at a Polynesian spa, Stacey left NZ in 2005, chasing the sun to Burleigh Heads, Queensland. Eighteen months later, the food, culture and city life drew her to Melbourne, where she decided to launch her own business in 2016.
A wellness space offering restorative facials, Little Company is located in Cremorne, with a second premises set to open in Byron Bay. ‘We are a little company dedicated to treating the skin as a living organ: taking a supportive approach (no quick fixes) and using only the best natural and organic ingredients plus sustainable practices,’ details Stacey. ‘Our locations and spaces are an extension of our philosophy, with design supporting restoration in an energetically nurturing environment – far from the clinical feeling you usually find in beauty businesses.’
Though moving to Australia was more of a lifestyle choice than a business decision for Stacey, she has found that within the beauty industry, the size of the Australian market has enabled her to break new ground, and create a tailored business with its own niche.
Addressing Kiwis looking to branch into business in Australia, or visa versa, she recommends a lean approach to business, ‘bootstrapping’ as much as possible. For Little Company, in the beginning, this meant working with the resources at hand. ‘Venue/space budgets can often blow out, so our family helped with our initial build, painting and the fit-out, then even other things like accounting and washing machine repairs!’ she tells. ‘We used eBay and Gumtree for second-hand plants and planters, clearance plywood, and excess stock left from a prior business.’
Having a lot of creative Kiwi friends living in Australia also gave Stacey a hand up, as she has never been short on finding someone keen to swap services. She has Charl Laubscher to thank for web design and creative direction, Shayna Quinn for artworks and textiles, and Ben Wilkie for interior architecture tips, to name but a few!
