Communication has been vital for the development of humanity and human life itself since always. In the last 30 years, humanity has developed new communication technologies which have evolved in an impressible way, we can notice the huge changes they have produced in our society and cultures all over the world. Back then, nearly 1950’s, there were phonebooths and nowadays exist the smartphones, which are more are more portable and have a lot of new things that make easy our life. Also, in those times existed the newspapers and now it exists the digital news thanks to internet. A lot of these advances have made communication easier. Communication technologies have changed in a positive way by letting people around the world to communicate faster with an easy access not only to it but to information itself. Nevertheless, this new technologies brough with them different secondary effects moreover, changes in human behavior.

Long distance communication is easier and more effective than 50 year ago, thanks to the different advances that have passed in technology. Before, the best way to communicate was via letters, these letters took a long time to be delivered and sometimes they did not reach their destination. Due to that and to different problems, through the time, people have been creating different apps and platforms for them to communicate, such as Instagram, Telegram, SMS, but most important, WhatsApp. This has been such an important App since 2009 for people around the world. In this app we can communicate in seconds with a person anywhere abroad. It has been improved through the time, nowadays you can communicate via texts, facetime, audios, you can send pictures and videos to anyone in your contacts. According to GBSB (Global Business School) “In a globalized world, effective communication is a necessity. When friends, relatives, and colleagues need to reach all corners of the world, it is easy to see the importance of global communications in the world today.” with this we can realize how big is the importance of these new advances in the communication technology and how they affect our social lives, also, we can realize how big is the importance of this new advances in the communication technology.

As time passes newspapers and magazines are used in a less way by people because all the information that they provide can be found in so many sites from internet. People nowadays prefer to read news from websites because of the fast and cheap way to find the information, newspapers normally arrive in the mornings, and you must pay for you to get them, now you can only search in any hour and it would appear the information that is around the world. On the other hand, new generations are more conscious every day of the ecological problems the world is suffering, due to this they prefer using technology to be inform about what is happening around them, in this way fewer trees are cut down and the ecological impact would be less (you can use an electronic device many times, but for every newspaper it’s produce they need a new paper sheet). It has helped connect people around the world through different platforms which promote the creation of relationships between people, even if they are not necessarily in the same place; they have managed to connect people through calls, text messages, among other functions and strategies, and have helped strangers get to know each other and create different kinds of relationships; in despite of, it has brough with it side effects that have caused damage to the mental and physical health of users.

Death Due To Hazing At Cornell University

Federal Hazing Laws

According to U.S. legal library, hazing is defined as an abusive, often humiliating form of initiation into or affiliation with a group including: 1, any willful action taken or situation created which recklessly or intentionally endangers the mental or physical health of another. 2, any willful act by any person in striking, beating, bruising, maiming, or seriously offering, threatening, or attempting to strike, beat bruise or maim, or to do or seriously offer, threaten, or attempt to do physical violence to another made for the purpose of committing any of the acts[3].

Hazing happens a lot without people realizing. Even though hazing is most popular with Greek life at Universities, that doesn’t mean it stops there. Hazing often occurring when new sport members join a team, a new member joins a club, or it can even happen at high schools. However, State laws have governing hazing statutes.

When Is Hazing a Crime?

Hazing is usually considered a misdemeanor and considered a crime when it possesses serious risk of injury. However, students that participate in hazing could still face more general criminal charges, such as assault and battery. Surprisingly, it's not only students who have faced allegations from hazing. In a handful of states, bystanders, coaches, and employees could face the same charges for not reporting hazing[2].

Furthermore, many students believe that if student consent to hazing, the “consent defense” is valid. Generally, courts will not allow this. Actually, many state laws explicitly prohibit it.

Michigan Hazing Laws

In Michigan, hazing is considered a misdemeanor. Consequently, if the violation results in physical injury, the person is guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment for not more than 93 days or a fine of not more than $1,000, or both. It is governed by statute law – Statute 750.411t. In highlight of this statute, it resembles the legal definition of hazing. Subheadings of the statute elucidate the important clause of the statute. Moreover, any physical harm, activity involving consumption of food, liquid, alcoholic beverage, liquor, drug, or any other substance or anything that would make them subject to harm, and activity that induces, causes, or requires an individual to perform a duty or task that involves the commission of a crime or an act of hazing[7].

Hazing Allegation at Cornell University – Background Information

A recent hazing lawsuit was filed on Tuesday, 1/28/2020 in Tompkins County Supreme Court. Antonio Tsialas was found dead in a gorge at Cornell University after attending a rush party that was hosted by a Phi Kappa Psi.

Antonio was only 18 years of age and appeared eager to start his bright future at Cornell. He received an invitation to Phi Kappa Psi’s Christmas party because he was considered a “good pledge prospect.” Moreover, he decided to attend the fraternity’s “Christmas in October” on October 24th, 2019. Antonio was able to enjoy dinner with his Mother before he rushed to the party for the rest of the night. Nevertheless, Antonio made breakfast plans with his Parents for the next morning since this was unregistered rush event, the freshmen were led into the basement of the fraternity.According to the lawsuit, this is where fraternity leaders laid out a rule: “If you are ever asked, you were never here.” The itinerary of the party was made up of 7 themed rooms designed for hazing activity [4] .The room were made up of the Tropical Room, Beer Room, Wine Room, Jewish Room, Milk and Rum Room, The Santa Clause Room, and the Lounge[1]. Antonio had to finish the drinking games in each room before going to the next. These were not normal drinking games, and the members of Phi Kappa Psi pressured Antonio to finish several fifths, multiple cans of beer, and countless bottles of wine. The lawsuit preached, “Freshmen were expected to be hazed and drink large amounts of alcohol.” In some instances, physical abuse occurred, like submerging their heads into large buckets of water for too long. After the party, Antonio attempted to make it home by foot[4].

Antonio’s mother realized something was wrong when he never showed up the next morning. She took every action she could; including filing a missing person report and visiting the fraternity house. Both parents handed out missing person flyers in the college town while they searched for him.

On October 26th, the day after the missing person report was filed, Antonio’s body was found in a fall creek near Ithaca Falls[4].

More Information Needed

Antonio’s parents were left with some questions. Was the drunken freshmen taken to the secluded, pitch-dark area of campus where he died? Or was he allowed to disappear into the night, intoxicated and alone? The lawsuit states, “His subsequent death was the direct and proximate result of the defendants’ actions and would not have happened if the hazing event had not taken place[4].” The Family offered a $10,000 reward for any information on how and why their son died last month. They were crying for help, from anyone; including the student body in which they received more than 150 leads[1].

After reaching out to Cornell, the University decided to be proactive.Two dozen fraternity presidents signed a statement that declared, “We have obligated to protect the safety of both our members, our guests, and the larger Cornell community and we believe that taking this action allows us to draw back and reassess our shortcomings and enact substantial change.”In addition, these fraternities overwhelmingly agreed to suspend all registered social events planned for the next weekend, which was Halloween[1].

The death investigation continued at Cornell. However, Cornell refused to give out more information. They repetitively emphasized that they had a zero-tolerance hazing; which they expected fraternity men to uphold. A representative of the college stated, “We continue to mourn for the family and friends of Antonio Tsialas and support the university and police investigations into his death[1].

Antonio’s Mother announced, “Our Antonio was silenced on the 24th of October, let the silence end with the TRUTH. No organization on earth is more important than a human life[1].”

Complaint Filed LAST WEEK

After 3 long months of gathering information, the 46-pagecomplaint was filed at State if New York Supreme Court, Tompkins County on 1/28/2020 at 4:51 pm. The plaintiff, John Tsialas and Flavia Tomasello, as personal representatives of Estate of Antonio Tsialas, deceased, sued Cornell University, Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity, Inc., New York Alpha of Phi Kappa Psi Association, Inc., Andrew Scherr, Shane Rohe, William Granath, Ryan Berman, Nolan Berkenfeld, Piertro Palazzolo Russo, Felipe Hanauch and John Jacob[1].

Henceforth, the family of the deceased student is suing multiple parties; Cornell University, the fraternity chapter on Cornell’s campus, the fraternity’s headquarters and nationals, and members of the fraternity that were involved firsthand in hazing Antonio.

The Estate of Antonio Tsialas seek compensation damages from the defendants listed above. One or more of the exceptions set forth in CPLR 1603 apply to this action.

1. Compensation for the injuries and mental and physical pain, suffering, and anguish suffered by their son Antonio Tsialas prior to his death.

2. Compensation for Antonio Tsialas’ fear of impending death

3. Compensation for the consequences to John Tsialas and Flavia Tomaseelo from death of their son, Antonio Tsialas, including, but not limited to, past, present, and suffering caused by his death[1].

State Hazing Laws –New York

The laws governing this complaint are upheld by New York State Penal Law, Chapter 716, Section 1. These laws became effective November 1, 1988.

1. 120.16: Hazing in the first degree

A person is guilty of hazing in the first degree when, in the course of another person's initiation into or affiliation with any organization, he intentionally or recklessly engages in conduct which creates a substantial risk of physical injury to such other person or a third person and thereby causes such injury. Hazing in the first degree is a class A misdemeanor.

2. 120.17: Hazing in the second degree

A person is guilty of hazing in the second degree when, in the course of another person's initiation or affiliation with any organization, he intentionally or recklessly engages in conduct which creates a substantial risk of physical injury to such other person or a third person.Hazing in the second degree is a violation[5].

There has been five fraternity deaths in 2019. This is the first hazing-related lawsuit of 2020. I encourage you to follow the proceeding and updates of this case. Spread the word, and as Antonio’s motherdeclared, “let the silence end with the TRUTH.”

During the night of last Tuesday (14), the former BBB Victor Hugo, who left the 20th edition of “Big Brother Brasil” with the record of public rejection, ended up going through a very sad episode on social networks. When trying to organize a live broadcast, Victor Hugo was harassed by some internet users.

It is possible to state that the live was promoted by the psychologist through his Instagram profile. However, the initiative did not work out very well and Victor Hugo left the broadcast in tears after being offended by several internet users.

As soon as the psychologist appeared live, the offenses started to arrive. These comments, in turn, came from people who belong to other fans and do not necessarily like Victor Hugo. Little time has passed since the beginning of the transmission, and the former BBB chose to interrupt it, visibly shaken.

After leaving the live, Victor Hugo used his Twitter account to publish only an upset emoji, in reference to the situation that just happened and making it clear that he had been dissatisfied with the posture that his haters adopted during the transmission.

This whole situation ended up touching internet users and, shortly after the event, the phrase “Victor Hugo deserves respect” reached the Twitter Trending Topics, a list that determines the most discussed topics on the social network in question.

Understand the motivation for attacks

According to information from the UOL website, most of the offenses that the ex-BBB suffered during his live came from two specific fans: Gizelly Bicalho and Manu Gavassi.

When he was still confined, the brother ended up fighting with both sisters.

Just before leaving confinement, Victor Hugo had a try of combining votes exposed by Felipe Prior, as well as a gossip that he had made from Gizelly to Flayslane Raiane. Flayslane, Prior and Guilherme declare cheering for Babu
