however also interesting that she's still choosing not to live with her family. especially since im kinda convinced her grandma + parents + older brother all live together. her mother being a housewife could signal that her family's more traditional- which makes her grandma being mentioned an interesting detail.
the intergenerational model of "the younger generation takes care of the older" isnt as common in japan as it used to be but it definitely was common! at some point! and family's still a pretty important part of life in japan even without that! if kotoko's family leans on being more traditional its likely her grandma lives with her parents, supported by her father. and her older brother would live with their parents to support both their parents and their grandmother. i have no idea why ive absorbed this into my brain so solidly as canon when its entirely possible that might not be the case.
but anyways. if that rings true it means kotoko is the outlier to this- for some reason she's living separate. why are you alone, kotoko? did you get away? did you "escape"?
