Nottingham Ch QF: Dominik Koepfer [5] def. George Loffhagen [WC] 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP Challenger Livestream (via website)
Eventually, those who stayed balanced would come out of this match. Koepfer had 3 more chances to break as a result of his attempt to bring Loffhagen further off the balance, eventually breaking his serve thrice, the latest was a result of the double fault. Somehow, Koepfer's baseline game pressed Loffhagen's service game enough under pressure, where he went aggressive at times, mostly with his forehand.
On the other hand, both players had their own strengths in the service games. Scoring 3 aces, Loffhagen stood out in his first serves by winning 5% more points than Koepfer. Interestingly, even if Koepfer double-faulted six times (2 more than Loffhagen), Koepfer still managed to win 57% of his points from his second serves, while Loffhagen won 12% lesser points because of his occasional shot rushes.
In the semifinals, Koepfer will face the winner between Arthur Cazaux or Gabriel Diallo, which match is still ongoing as this was written. Knowing how either player could have an explosive game, thanks to their working serves and paced strokes, which could boil down to several important points (and adjustments), this could be another interesting match (considering Koepfer’s experience in the surface). Should be another match to watch!

Koepfer stayed consistent in the third set, going after Loffhagen's forehand side along the way. Eventually, Loffhagen getting run over his forehand side secured Koepfer's break point prior to its conversion out of a double fault.
The match was almost sealed at the eighth game at the expense of Loffhagen's double fault and getting run over trying to pull a forehand for Koepfer's match points, but eventually Loffhagen held and Koepfer had to serve for the match. Despite several hiccups, Koepfer still managed to serve it out, taking the third set 6-3 and winning the match altogether.

Loffhagen started to raise his level in the second set, which brought the match into further distance at the end of the day. Koepfer started strong in one of the longer rallies in the second game thanks to his forehand winner since the rally had all the tricks, including how Loffhagen replied to the smash. Koepfer opened the chance to break, by then, but Loffhagen still managed to hold his service game to 2-0.
However, Koepfer’s backhand side was the more targeted one toward the end of the second side. After a rushed backhand preceded a forehand error for Loffhagen’s break point, the latter was the reason behind Loffhagen’s break (5-4), hence he had the opportunity to serve for the second set. Without any further ado, Loffhagen landed a forehand winner to secure the second set 6-4 with a love-hold, bringing this match to a decider afterward.

Wild card George Loffhagen started to make his splash in the grass season after the rollercoaster start to the beginning of his season, defeating Otto Virtanen and Juncheng Shang, the latter digging deep to win 6-4, 5-7, 6-3. He went on facing more experienced fifth seed Dominik Koepfer, who defeated Arthur Fery 6-4, 6-2 in the latter’s first ever Challenger second-round experience.
Starting the match with 4 consecutive holds and 2 consecutive breaks, Loffhagen almost broke again while trying to bring Koepfer off the balance from his forehand side before another break point happened at the expense of Koepfer’s double fault. However, Koepfer managed to come in a clutch and held his service game to 4-3 as a result.
Several games later, Koepfer attempted the same, aiming after Loffhagen’s forehand. Previously having several set points, his baseline game once again took an effect on Loffhagen, resulted in Loffhagen’s forehand misfires in the last 2 points of the set. The latest set point was created because it was too wide, while the other one ended up being stuck to the net, resulting in Koepfer taking the first set 7-5 thanks to a more controlled aggression in his part under pressure.

...Loffhagen's shot to save the break at 4-4* 30-40 here deserved a shoutout, because it was a really swift build-up until he executed that volley right from the net. Despite all of the efforts, Loffhagen still got broken by Cukierman at 5-4, before Cukierman served it out and win the match. Still a strong showing, at the end!
Cukierman will then face Goncalo Oliveira in the quarterfinals tomorrow, who defeated Patrick Brady 6-3, 6-2 in the second round. Knowing G. Oliveira, this should be an interesting match, to some extent, but we will see!

Nottingham Ch R2: Dominik Koepfer [5] def. Arthur Fery [WC] 6-4, 6-2 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP Challenger Livestream (via website)
Koepfer's level throughout the match was rock solid, especially with his strong service games and shot-making capabilities, which were visible in his winners. Landing 64% of his first serves, Koepfer won 84% of his points from his first serves while A. Fery's second serves fell a little bit behind with an 8% difference even if he just double-faulted thrice. Interestingly, both players scored 3 aces, but Koepfer appeared more clutch by saving 67% of A. Fery's break points.
While his forehand winners were one of the most tangible results to Koepfer's point construction prowess in this match, he maintained the pace well in his shots. Even though A. Fery tried to outhit him in the middle of the first set or in stepping up attempts for the second (to keep it more competitive), it was not enough since Koepfer executed his shots more smoothly. As a result, Koepfer converted 80% of his break points throughout the two sets compared to A. Fery's 33%, which came from the first set break-back.
In the quarterfinals, Koepfer will face the winner between George Loffhagen and Juncheng (Jerry) Shang. While Jerry started to pick up his game on grass in the past few weeks, Loffhagen's grass game might bring some challenges. Should be an interesting encounter!

ITF M25 Sunderland: Daniel Cukierman [6] def. Tom Hands 6-2, 6-3 Match Recap
🎥 ITF Media
A little recap dump from the first round of the ITF M25 Sunderland this week! This is the first match I tried to watch from there, though! (so many technical hiccups from there in between)
The first match I watched during this tournament was Daniel Cukierman vs. Tom Hands, where Cukierman won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Cukierman looked solid in the first set, although Hands has good hands (as documented) at some occasions on the net!
Tumblr media
📸 ITF Media
The flow of the second set was almost similar to the first set, except it started with a breaking game (no one could hold serve) until Cukierman held his service game. The ending was rather topsy-turvy with Hands being able to save around 4 match points (notably resulted from Cukierman’s backhand error, if not there was a double fault somewhere), but finally Cukierman managed to come through.
For the next round, Cukierman is going to face the winner between George Loffhagen and Jonas Schaer. Should be an interesting encounter, for some reason…
