ive been a little upset about it all night so i need to write out all the things that happened at work today and are bugging me so i can TRY to get it out of my head and actually RELAX bc i just keep pacing in circles around it instead of just accepting it and moving on
#for context i was working frying chicken today. ok so i arrive and literally all the chicken out expires within ten minutes of each other#meanwhile to remake everything takes about an hour 20#tried my best to get everything out and replaced and make sure i have enough of everything and then take my break bc with chicken there are#few narrow windows to take your break in you have very little control over when it is#get back and while im getting ready for my next fry one of the assistant leaders comes back and passive aggressively asks 'everything ok?'#and when i say yeah shes starts saying how shes 'just checking' because apparently i didnt have enough chicken out for her liking and went#on about how we're in a chicken drive (I KNOW. I WORK CHICKEN SHE NEVER HAS.)#etc etc. i just say ok and she leaves#like 20 minutes later she comes fucking back to rag on me again about how i need to choose my break times better and i need to have more#chicken out there as back up (extremely difficult bc there is literally only so much room in the fryers. the batches i usually make already#nearly completely fill them up) blah blah and then when i try to explain how i WAS making pretty big batches people are just snatching them#up fast she keeps trying to walk out the door right away and keeps stopping and looking over her shoulder to just stare at me while i try t#finish my sentence#and she just. doesnt say anything in response when i do finish she just leaves#so clearly she didnt want a conversation she just wanted to rag on me#then later for cleanup the timing of everything just kept lining up inconveniently so i kept having to get in and out of raw cleaning gear#and slowing myself down and i end up having to stay almost 15 minutes late to finish cleaning#during cleaning i have to go grab a key to the back door to take out my trash and this one coworker i have was standing in the way of the#door. i say excuse me and she just stares at me and goes huh?#and i say i need a key and she barely moves out of the way without responding and she has a look like im bothering her#why are you acting like im being douchey. i just need a key. thats something she does a lot she acts like im inconveniencing her by asking#basic favors . ive stopped asking her to help me open the back door (sometimes needed if i also have raw garbage to take out and therefore#cant touch the key myself) for some reason she takes it upon herself to almost completely close the door after i walk out so when i come#back i have to awkwardly use my foot to reach around and pull the door open#ive asked her before not to do it and she just ignored me#GRAH GRAH. and then like i said in my last rb i realized while i was drivign home i forgot to wash a damn pan#im mostly worried about it because ive forgotten a couple times in the past too . in my defense its a pan i personally dont use but it just#gets left behind from first shift sometimes and then second shifters end up having to make sure its clean#im just irritateddd and im mad im worried about it all. its all little things piling up on each other#LOL I WROTE A LOT MORE BUT THE REST GOT CUT OUT IG I HIT A TAG LIMIT. tumblr voice ok dude quit your bitching !!

Julian loki x reader
Warnings: none just julian being the sweetest
Authors note: this is my first time making a julian oneshot. So might and probably will be oc
Summary: oneshot in which you spend a sweet and soft evening with your boyfriend, you went with him to japan.
A speaker was blasting music in the shared apartment of you and your boyfriend. You sang along with the lyrics, it was one out of a millions voice, this one melodious voice was yours. It your version of the version blasting, you loved listening to your own voice, that how confident you were.
You chopped onions in awfully even bits, the sound of the knife hitting the board felt like it was matched with the song. You scraped the knife against the cutting board, the now cut onion bring pushed in a frying pan with layers of beef, pasta, cheese and tomato sauce. It was your version of a lasagna, yes, cooked in a frying pan, it might sound weird but its actually very delicious and you dont even close the frying pan with a glass covering. It was also one of your boyfriends favorite, congratulating him after playing against the blue lock members. The door opened to a someone you knew oh too well, but some people were with him. You stopped your activities to greet your champion, his face lit up at the sight of you, he hugged you tightly while your arms were around his neck. When you tried to back away he held you a little tighter, whispering in your ear" im sorry, i didn't tell you." You backed away booping his nose, " its fine" you said not whispering this time. " Welcome! Make yourself feel at home. Dinner should be ready in thirty minutes" you said taking off the coat of julian shoulders. They nodded, while you hang his cpat properly, you heard a small sniffing sound" you cooked your frying pan lasagna" " yup!" You cooed at your turn popping the p, walking back to the kitchen. His teammates seemed to already to like the ambiance here, you lowered the music a little. " That doesn't sound like nicki minaj, who's version is this?" One of his teammates asked" it's my version" you answered without a second thought preparing the table in advance. You took out some bris and vegetables, cutting them in even bits and placing them on the table. Right after this you took off your apron revealing a much oversized shirt, the owner, julian, recognized it. You went to you and julian shared room to get your laptop, sitting next to him at the dinning table, so you could keep an eye on the cooking dinner. He seemed to be having fun with his teammates, you were glad. Suddenly the volume of the music, the google assistant of your phone now speaking. " Youtube as sent you an important notification. Would you like for me to read it?" The robot questionned" no" you answered clearly so the robot would process your answer easily. The music went back to its original volume, your boyfriend yook hold of your phone typing the pin code quickly, all your notification popped up. He scrolled till he saw youtube, his teammates didn't care and kept talking as an occupation before he dived back in with them. He froze at the notification, you turned your gaze to him, he started smiling whispering the news into your ears. You smiled and nodded thanking him with a peck, he couldn't help but extend his smile.
...
He waved to the last of his teammate, after the door was closed again, his eyes laid on you. He gave you an invitation to picking you up, not verbally of course, you nodded before he effortlessly picked you up bridal style. Carrying you to your shared bedroom, he finally could have his alone time with you and snuggle into your warmth. He laid on top of you, burrying his face in your neck, enjoying the feeling of your fingers running up and down the back of his neck. He waited all day to be able to feel this welcoming warmth, even tho he liked football, you were his world so if he didn't have you welcoming him back home after a match or pratice, what was the point to going the next day. He didn't know, you were his main motivation, you whispered sweet nothings in his ear. Earning a blushing mess hiding in the crook of your neck, words of praise was one of weaknesses, you were his strength as much as you were his weakness. But he was glad either way, because he didn't love eith his mind or heart, he loved you with his soul.
His head left the crook of your neck and your gaze wondered on his even features, he left a soft and loving kiss on your lips. Soon after you both fell asleep, both in an slumber as deep as your shared love...

Reunited pt 3
Newt x Reader x Gally
Request (@tomesandrosebud ): The reader was Gally’s girlfriend when they were in the Glade, up until his ‘death’. And leaving him behind left her heartbroken but with everything going on after being 'saved’ by W.C.K.D. the Gladers had to just keep moving. So with all of the events of the Scorch the reader and Newt became really close, him helping to heal her broken heart and falling in love, sharing one kiss during the battle against W.C.K.D. when Minho was taken and then started officially dating soon afterwards. Also the reader somehow found out from Teresa and Thomas having regained their memories, Chuck was actually the reader’s little brother the whole time. So now it’s almost been a year since the day in which the Glader’s escaped the Maze and it turns out that Gally actually is still alive, and he’s been searching for and still been in love with the reader. And so the imagine basically kind of just all about how after the shock of Gally still being alive and him coming to re-join the group, how he basically never like up front gets told that now the reader and Newt are together. That it’s more of Gally feeling like she’s just avoiding him when he’s just trying to regain what they used to have. And he just has this feeling there’s something that the group isn’t telling him. And at one point he kind of just gets upset and thinks she hates him because of him killing Chuck, which she is upset about but unlike Thomas she was able to get passed that. But then eventually he just sees the reader and Newt together and is able to put it all together and basically just his reaction to everything.
Warnings: guns, swearing, fighting, TST spoilers

Luckily, the group had found Thomas and Brenda before anything serious happened to them at Marcus’s club. While the two of them recovered from whatever Marcus made them drink, Jorge was able to interrogate Marcus and find a location for the Right Arm. He was even able to get a truck.
Your luck had seemingly ran out when the group could no longer drive, as there were dozens of cars blocking the road. The group hadn’t been able to walk a far distance before several shots rang out.
You hid with Frypan, Brenda, Theresa, and Aris behind an old van. Jorge spoke with Thomas before announcing that everyone had to be ready to sprint back to the truck. His plan was unsuccessful, due to two women approaching them with rifles. They recognized Aris, and brought you all to the Right Arm base.
The plan was to leave at first light, relocate to a new base. You had finally made it.
You, Newt, Frypan, and Minho we’re sitting together, watching over the camp when Thomas joined you.
“So does this make us Mountain people now?” You asked, earning a chuckle from the small group. “I guess it does. I wish Alby could’ve seen all this.” Newt sighed.
“And Winston.” Frypan added.
“And Chuck.” Thomas frowned, fiddling with the small wooden figure in his hands.
“He’d be proud of you, Tommy.”
Thomas nodded, “Yeah..”
You turned to the group, “They’d all be proud of us. Even those slintheads who stayed behind.”
The group nodded, and Thomas went to find Theresa.
You removed one of your gloves and started absentmindedly picking at the scabs on your wrist from when Minho fell on you. They were still pretty fresh, but not very large.
“You shouldn’t mess with those,” Newt grabbed your hand gently, “They could get infected, and it’s too cold for you not to wear your gloves.” He carefully slid your gloves back on, not letting your hand go. He held both of your hands in his, rubbing the pads of his thumbs over the backs of your hands. “Does it still hurt?” He asked. You shook your head, “They weren’t too bad to begin with. I’m sure they’ll be gone in a week.”
He nodded, looking over to Minho who was snickering with Frypan. Newt sent them a warning glance.
“How about you, Minho? The burns still hurt?”
Minho shrugged. “Not too much, I’ve been in worse pain after running the shucking maze.”
Frypan chuckled, rubbing his hands together. “You know it’s weird not having to cook every day for you shanks.”
“I could really go for some of your cooking, Fry.” You sighed at the thought of the Glade. Sure, you were all prisoners, but everyone there was a big family. You really missed them. If only they could be here.
“Let’s head down there. Find something to eat, yeah?” Minho suggested. Everyone agreed, and you all went down to the camp together.
After eating a small amount of food, you all sat together waiting for Thomas to return. Newt was in the middle of a sentence when WCKD attacked. The camp was immediately in chaos. WCKD guards pushed their way through the people, shooting everyone they could.
You ran around with Newt, Frypan, and Minho in search of Thomas. When part of a burning tent fell on top of you, Newt shouted your name and ripped it off. He pulled you back up and brushed the embers away from your jacket. You thanked him, hugging him tightly. When Newt pulled away, his eyes connected with yours and he swore to himself before glancing around at the havoc and shaking his head. Newt’s hands shot up to the sides of your face and he pressed his lips against yours. You found yourself kissing him back.
The kiss only lasted a few seconds before you had to run again. Newt pulled you along with him, keeping you close.
You met back up with Minho and Frypan, and the four of you went to assist Vince and Harriet. Vince handed everyone a rifle. You couldn’t remember ever using one before, but it seemed vaguely familiar.
“There are too many of them!” You cried out, desperately shooting at the WCKD guards.
“We’ve got to get this gun loaded. It’s our only chance.” Vince snapped, grabbing bullets out of Harriet’s hand.
WCKD guards moved closer to your group, shooting around you. One shot narrowly missed your head and Newt scooted closer to you, instructing Vince to hurry up.
Just before Vince was able to fire, a guard threw some sort of shock grenade at you. It rendered everyone defenseless, and you all collapsed.
The guards lined everyone up to scan your necks. You had been placed next to Newt. Thomas turned himself in, and Theresa joined Ava.
“You shucking traitor! How could you?!” You shouted, making a move to punch Theresa. A guard stopped you before you got to her, punching you in the gut.
“Y/n!” Newt cried out, pulling you to him. He helped you to your feet.
“I’m sorry. I had to, this was the only way. We have to find a cure.” Theresa announced to you and your friends. She was too cowardly to make eye contact with anyone.
Ava and Mary spoke, and Jansen shot Mary. You gasped, knees trembling. Newt pulled you into him, hiding your face in his shoulder so you wouldn’t look.
Jansen ordered the guards to load everyone up, but Thomas pulled out Jorge’s bomb.
“Thomas, do you really want all of them to die?” Ava asked. Minho waked to stand behind Thomas, being followed by Frypan, Newt, and you.
“We’re with you, Thomas.”
“Do it, Thomas.”
“We’re ready.” You all showed your support for Thomas’s plan. No one would be going back to WCKD.
You reached for Newt’s hand, preparing yourself for the explosion.
“THOMAS!” Ava shouted. Everyone’s attention turned to a loud horn, and a giant truck being driven by Jorge straight into a WCKD helicopter.
Everyone ducked for cover, avoiding the chunks of debris and dirt the helicopter threw.
“FREEZE. DROP IT KID.” A guard shouted to Thomas. Thomas threw his bomb at them, yelling for everyone to get down. You yanked Newt to the ground, away from the explosion.
After it was safe to run, you and Newt split up to grab guns off of bodies. Everyone shot at the WCKD guards, pushing them further back. The group slowly got further away from the guards, and most turned to running instead of shooting. Minho continues covering for everyone while you all hid behind a crate.
You screamed when Minho was shot. You tried to get up and run to him but guards shot at you, and Frypan pulled you out of the line of fire.
Jorge held Thomas back as Minho was dragged onto the WCKD helicopter.
You screamed with Thomas, completely helpless. WCKD took Minho.
“I know what I’m supposed to do now. It’s not just about Minho. It’s about all of us. It’s about everyone wicked’s ever taken. Everyone they will take. They’ll never stop. They’ll never stop so I’m going to stop them. I’m gonna kill Ava page.” Thomas announced to the group.
“I’m with you, Thomas.” You announced, standing up from the rock you had been sitting on. Even if it was suicide, like Jorge said, you still had to try. Minho would have done the same for anyone else. Thomas sent you a grateful look, looking around to see who else would support him.
Newt looked at you for a moment before grabbing your hand and nodding his head, nonverbally telling you he was in too.
“Well that’s a good speech, kid. So what’s your plan?”

Chapter 3: The Island (Dusk)
Tumblr media
When I woke up, the light from the sunset cast an orangey hue in the room. I grabbed my phone off the bedside table. The screen displayed a shit ton of notifications and the time, which read 8:21 P.M. No matter how long I’d been living in the upper hemisphere I never got used to the crazy daylight hours during the summer. I opened the only chat I cared about at the moment and without reading the unread messages I held my thumb on the voice message icon.
“Um hi. Sorry I haven’t been able to get back you, but Im doing alright—just a bit hungover from last night. The girls are keeping me distracted... you could even say I’m enjoying myself—“, I chuckled with no humor. “I’ll keep you posted and tell you more about it when I get back next week... love you guys.”
With a bleep, I sent the recording and locked my phone, throwing it on the mattress. I sat up on the edge of the bed, stretching my body which was still sore. At least the queasiness was gone.
I headed to the shower, turning on the faucet all the way up hoping the hard stream of cool water would drown the dull sound of music coming from the pool area. It was imposible though, and the piece of mind I’d achieved while asleep was once more put to an end by my overthinking.
Was it really the right thing to be hiding out up here in my room instead of joining them? Maybe I was making too much of a deal about it. But it was a big deal—for me. Maybe Marco Reus deserved an explanation... or part of it. Sure, I’d bolted like a crazy person in the morning, but that wasn’t about him. And I didn’t have to explain the reason why I had to leave. I wasn’t even ready to say anything out loud to my band mates who’d witnessed my breakdown at its worst, much less to a one night stand who also happened to be one of my football idols. The only thing I would be willing to explain was the blackout. That should be reassuring enough for him, and then maybe we could have a fun vacation hanging out like normal acquaintances... right?
I groaned, turning the shower off and drying my hair with the towel. Who am I kidding? It’s going to be awkward, but I was going to have to live with it for the next week. Why couldn’t I’ve waited until the last day to screw up?
My stomach grumbled on cue too. Great, I’d forgotten I hadn’t had solid food since yesterday evening. It was a common occurrence these days—to only eat when reminded of by my body. As a former chubby kid and anxious eater, I always thought going through something traumatic would make me gain my weight again. The opposite happened, but it didn’t make me feel better. I dried myself quickly and avoided looking at my naked body on the mirror, tying up my robe on a haste. I guess I still looked good to everyone else, but the weight loss for me was tied to something distressing...
I missed enjoying food. I missed everything that made me excited. I missed him...
I bit my lower lip hard, making it hurt so my brain would focus on that instead of the other pain.
Concentrating on the lyrics to the song which was playing outside, I made my way to the kitchen. I decided I would really try to make a decent meal, something to keep my mind occupied. And then maybe Netflix, and catching up with my emails and deleting stuff from my phone. It was getting scary at this point, considering I wasn’t a normal person who got the normal amount of messages. If my phone hasn’t exploded yet it was bound to in a few days. Though thinking about it, I better let my personal assistant do that for me. After all, there was a reason why I was reluctant to read and delete certain things from my phone— might catch a glimpse of a few heartbreaking memories.
Sighing, I surveyed the fridge for ingredients. It had already been stacked for us, even if no one expected us to cook home meals. After some head scratching I decided on pan frying a quick version of a Tortilla Española, and got to it.
I wasn’t half bad at cooking, and soon the kitchen filled with the luscious aroma of sautéed onions and chorizo— my personal touch for extra flavor. I was so in my zone, cutting the potatoes and listening to the music outside, I didn’t notice I wasn’t alone anymore.
“Smells good”.
I jolted in place, looking up to find none other than Marco Reus standing under the kitchen’s archway. I set the knife down and puffed out a breath. He kept popping up in front of me like some kind of bad jump scare.
Marco coughed out an apologetic laugh. “I’m sorry, I always scare you”.
I could only muster a chuckle. “It’s fine. I’m always up in my head. Thanks, by the way.”
We stood there in silence for a moment. My hands were shaking a bit. What was he doing inside? Was he looking for me? Oh god, I have to tell him.
“Listen—“ “I was looking for—“
We spoke simultaneously. I bit my lip and Marco rubbed the back of his neck.
“Sorry”, he started again, “I was looking for the bathroom?”
“Oh”.
I’d assumed wrong after all. I tried to reply as casual as I could: “It’s behind this wall, to the right”.
“Thank you”.
I didn’t look at him but I could feel him watching as he walked past me. He definitely knew I was just about to tell him something. Better now than later then; he won’t take long in there. I turned the burner off. This could be a long conversation and I don’t want anything catching fire in the middle of it.
I leaned against the counter, nibbling on a piece of chorizo. This time he wouldn’t catch me by surprise, I was already waiting for him. It took him two minutes to walk back in the kitchen and I could tell by the way he slowed down as he got near me, he wasn’t heading out yet. I prepared myself to initiate the conversation, but he beat me to it.
“Do you feel better?”
I didn’t expect the question. “Better?”
“Yes, Talia said you were... sick?” For some reason, he hesitated on the last word. Did he already asume I was avoiding him?
“Oh, that. No, I’m not sick, just hungover— you know”, I lowered my gaze, remembering the whole ordeal. “But I slept and took some medicine, and I do feel better now”.
Marco stood with his arms crossed. “Huh. Good”. He narrowed his eyes, the playful dimple on his side smirk distracting me. “I thought you were avoiding me”.
My eyes widened. I didn’t know he was going to be this forward.
“No, not at all!”, I stammered.
He cocked his head to the side. “Are you sure? You run away after I kissed you in the morning”.
Well, shit.
“Yes. True”, I admitted, defeated. ”But I swear it wasn’t because of you! Or the kiss— the kiss was good!”.
The words spilled out and blood rushed to my face. Marco looked pleased with himself for a second, but he kept pressing me.
“Danke. But if it was good as you say, why did you run away? You didn’t like the sex?”
“No—” I responded almost immediately. Marco did a double take. “I mean—I don’t know”, shit, just say it.
He seemed irritated. “You don’t know?”
“Yeah I don’t.... remember.”
He cocked his head again. “I don’t understand.”
“I drank a lot last night. I blacked out.”
He processed my words in silence. The explanation hadn’t gone as smooth as I intended and it was totally my fault. If he’s still cool with me after this, it’ll be an achievement.
“So you don’t remember anything?”, he finally asked.
“No.”
“But you said to me you wanted to go back to the house— you remember?”
Now that’s a detail. “I did?”
Marco blinked twice. “You don’t remember that part?”
I chewed on my lip, trying to go back to the point were I’d been last aware. “The last thing I remember was sitting at the bar and you coming to get me... but I’m guessing that’s not what happened.”
All of a sudden he was struggling not to smile. “You told me to dance with you.”
“Oh, god...”
“Hey, it’s okay, even drunk you were better than me”, he chuckled. “Very good...”
Marco’s eyes moved down to my cleavage and I was reminded I was still very naked under my robe. My fingers pinched the silky fabric close, as if that were going to do anything.
“Anyways”, I cut in; “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you before. This has never happened to me.”
“No, no. I’m sorry I didn’t notice. It looked like you liked what we were doing”, he added, smirking at the last sentence. I was blushing again. Maybe I did like it but guess I’ll never know.
I decided to ignore that part but he knew he’d flustered me. “It’s fine, there’s no way you could’ve known.”
“So, are you going to stop avoiding me now?”
I rolled my eyes. “I wasn’t, but yes”, I laughed.
Marco smiled. “Ok. We’re going in the yacht tomorrow... you don’t have to be scared.”
What did he mean by that? “Scared? Why would I be scared?”
He looked at me up and down once more before answering. “I don’t know.”
Before I could wonder what he was talking about, he was in front of me. My breath caught and he leaned down, chin brushing against the side of my neck.
“Bis morgen dann”, he muttered, before pecking me on the cheek and heading back out.
I stood there silent with goosebumps going down my arms.
It was worse than I had anticipated. Telling him didn’t make him settle with the explanation, as I thought it would. He will slowly try to convince me to relive last night, and I will give in, for sure. My body was already having clear responses to his advances. Only I don’t know if I will be able to mentally deal with what this entailed. And I just said I wasn’t going to avoid him anymore, so I was stuck. I gave up trying to eat and ran back to my room, the panic already rising.
I tried to steady my breathing but it was getting hard to catch air, and my vision started to blur. I slipped to the floor as carefully as I could, knocking a few things over in the process. Everything went dark for a moment. When I came to, I was still dizzy but at least it was over now. It took me several minutes to recover and be able to get to my purse and find the sleeping pills. I’d promised the guys I’d stopped using them but I’d never really stopped. They got me through the night without waking or dreaming. Even though I had just woken up, I needed to be asleep again.
I downed two of them at once, getting inside the covers and hoping I could handle myself better tomorrow when the time came to meet Marco and the guys at the yacht.
He wanted to play a game with me. Would I be able to play along? Or will it only make things worse for me if I try?

Skiing in Alpbachtal – The Alpine Trails of Champions and Gingerbread Villages of Austria
Skiing in Alpbachtal and exploring the Ski Juwel resort was a part of my ‘Year in Austria’ project, as the UK ambassador for the Austrian National Tourist Office. I will be travelling all around the country (from my home base of Vienna) over the next 12 months and showcasing a variety of destinations and activities. Follow #YearInAustria for all stories.
After brushing up on my ski skills in the Salzburg mountain ranges, it was time to head a little further east into the valleys of Alpbachtal and Wildschönau in neighbouring Tirol to edge closer to ski pro status on the slopes.
The winter wonder of the ski area known as ‘Ski Juwel’ is as dazzling as the name suggests, where I stayed in Austria’s ‘Most Beautiful Village’ while skiing in one of Tirol’s Top 10 Ski Resorts. It was exactly what I came to expect from a mountainous playground in Tirol – the region of Austria I call ‘the Narnia of Europe’.
Staying in Alpbach – Austria’s Most Beautiful Village
There are nine villages to choose from in the region, but Alpbach – rated the most beautiful in all of Austria – is the most popular. When I wasn’t inside the cosy confines of my spa hotel, Alpbacherhof for post-sporting revival and the seven-course meal re-fuelling, I could see how this historical town got its accolade.
It’s relatively unchanged, having once been so isolated before a road connected it in 1926. Boutique hotels, restaurants and stores, to the more delicate farmhouses on the hillside, retain the tiny decorative frame details. All the buildings proudly wear their alpine timber architectural style. Former Mayor Alfons Moser declared a law in 1953 that it was mandatory for all buildings to be built using only wood from second floor up in order to retain the original and traditional look. This homogenous style creates a beautiful gingerbread house effect when looking down over the valley from the forest pathways and mountain slopes.
For a better view of the sugar-dusted rooftops, I went on a private snowshoeing tour, testing one of the four tracks around the valley after a morning of ski. From Alpbach there are 19 winter ‘round hike’ panoramic walking routes, circling the village with 250km of trails for multi-hour adventures, in addition to 14 cross-country trails.
The rest stop at the Alpine farmhouse perfectly summed Austrian alpine life – the wooden house, the stillness of nature and the front-seat row to the mountain panorama. I had circled up the valley slopes to watch the candy floss coloured sunset, knowing I had already spent a blue-skied morning up on the very peaks I was looking at.
Staying in Alpbach is not to discard the other villages though, all of which are filled with long-standing traditions of local life. The medieval village of Rattenberg in particular is known for its class blowing craft, while craft beer lovers can head to the one-man brewery in Inneralpbach and try the unique beers brewed by local, Jos Moser.
Tirol is known for its food in particular, from the potato fry up of Tiroler Gröstl to the many knödel (dumping) dishes and even ravioli made with local cheeses, which I tried. In Alpbachtal, over 100 farms still operate in the area, and culinary enthusiasts can choose dishes made with locally sourced produce by looking out for the green Tiroler Wiktshaus stamp in the menu.
Skiing in Alpbachtal – Practice to Pro in Ski Juwel
Of course, I was also back in Tirol to ski, and with Alpbachtal Wildschönau’s playground of 46 cable lifts that take you up to 109km of piste, I had a lot of choice. If there is one thing I always remember about Tirol or define it by, it’s the spectacular mountain views. From the high peaks of Ski Juwel you can hit the powder of the 26km of blue runs, 54km of red or 13km of black while surveying the dream-like Kitzbühel Alps, Rofen Range and Brandenberg Alps from all angles.
My third ever ski session, it was here that I began to pick up pace. The turns were sharper and more frequent, my confidence to hit slightly steeper slopes increased and I ventured on a blue trail within two hours of hard practice.
In Austria you will learn how to ski quickly.
A huge part of this was finally finding an instructor where everything from personality to precise technique training methods was a perfect fit. My instructor, Harald was like a cool father figure who would laugh when you were slightly naughty losing control and getting off the ski-lift three seconds too late (by accident), feed you chocolate in bad moments and let you race him a little when you were on an adrenalin high.
On the first morning we took various blue trails that curved gently around mountain ledges and tackled short sections of blue slopes with an incline that challenged you. I remember getting to the start of a blue-signed trail marked with the number 61 and asking Harald if we were actually going on it.
He had previously mentioned that this track known as Frosty’s World was a ‘kid’s trail’, to ease any nerves. You will never forget the first time you complete a trail – it’s euphoric and incredibly addictive. So much so that I kept putting off lunch until we had completed another blue run, and another…
By the second day, Harald took me on my first red slope.
I had to finally face a fear. The one where I would always pass a red sign, and have a little peek down, reassured by Harald each time that we hadn’t taken a wrong turn and that this was the only way down.
After one blue warm-up on the next morning of ski, Harald stopped in front of a red sign again and I asked my usual question: “We are not going down there are we?” This time he said yes, and he absolutely meant it.
It felt as if the incline had almost doubled and I freaked out, having to stop repeatedly to catch my breath, which was only eased by the panoramic views of compete serenity.
Harald kept apologising, assuring me that he was confident I was ready for this, telling me he also wanted nothing more than to also show me some of the best views of all the land, accessed only by such journeys.
Skiing gives you exclusive access to nature’s best views.
Alas, adrenalin can be overkill, but I wasn’t upset or deflated. I had finally found an instructor who pushed me out of my comfort zone, and knew how to take my enthusiasm for ski and plough that energy into action. The Austrian ski team train in Alpbachtal Wildschönau regularly, and you’ll see it’s quite the winter canvas to polish your skills on the powder.
“Harald, we have absolutely no choice but to get down this mountain!” I would keep saying, my stubbornness reigning. Once you have started there is, of course, only one direction to take.
In what was quite possibly the longest adrenalin fuelled journey I’ve ever taken – down the longest red slope of the resort in small bursts, with a little hand-holding, tumbles and instructor-assisted side-sliding here and there. I was determined to achieve the status of having completed a red, even if it took hours.
Mountain Activities Aside from Traditional Ski in Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau
The highest peaks in Ski Juwel, like Großer Galtenberg, are not just playing grounds for traditional ski. The Wiedersbergerhorn lift gets you to 2,025m and Schatzberg is the next high peak lift at 1,903m. At both you can dine in a mountain huts, play in the obstacle filled snowparks or take a tandem paraglide right off the snowy mountain ledges. In Schatzberg, you can also take the 5km toboggan track down to the village of Auffach. It’s one of seven in the region.
I couldn’t indulge in a winter paraglide flight due to weather conditions and nor did I find the time to ride in a piste basher and be a snow plough pilot. 85% of all slopes here have snow making facilities, and this is one way to be one of the first on the fluffy, fresh snow.
The Reither Kogel is the place for long hikes. The 2.5km circular mountain walk being a popular route, accessed from the top of the cable car in either direction, with the lift routes leading you back to the village of Reith im Alpbachtal. This is also the mountain for speed enthusiasts. I’m keen to test the permanent Giant Slalom racetrack on the upper slopes when I am more confident with my technique and head to The Lanerköpfl chair lift in Niederau for the ‘Race ‘n’ Boarder Arena’ and its dedicated carving zone.
The Ski Juwel resort of Alpbachtal Wildschönau combines all the elements of Austrian alpine goodness – incredible valley views, challenging ski, alternative winter activities and preserved cultural traditions. From one end of the Kitzbüheler Alps where I first took to skis one year ago, to the other where I followed the ski trails of champions and achieved my biggest milestone here, Tirol remains my treasured winter haven.
