1). Denotative meaning- This is an image of a van in front of a candy store. It uses the colors light green and baby blue, with the words "The Candy Machine" in dark orange sans serif font. The words "candy" and "machine" are divided by an imaginary passive line that appears to subtly curve, consistently. This imaginary line allows for "candy" to become smaller from left to right, and "machine" to become larger from left to right, creating an almost perfect size contrast
2). Connotative meaning- It uses the colors dark orange, green, and baby blue, attempting to look like Scooby Doo's Mystery Machine van. Instead of Mystery Machine, the company flipped it into "The Candy Machine." The company used the exact font and letter shapes that the show used. This van and its cultural reference to the famous children's tv show gives me an inviting feeling of nostalgia; They did a great job simulating the original van. I think associating candy with Scooby Doo is a good fit since both are inviting to children/childhood, and has the potential to draw in children as customers, but also adults that used to watch the show
Tumblr media
3). This is an image of a water bottle created for the show "House of the Dragon." It uses the iconic font from the "Game of Thrones" series, which is recognizable even to people who have never seen the show. The serif font and the use of the three lines in the "O" make this font very distinct and fit perfectly with the vibe of the show. This font gives the feeling of medieval times, which is what the show is based on. Although much different, this font is similar to the iconic font of the Harry Potter franchise, which uses small symbols like a lightning bolt to create distinctiveness
Tumblr media
4). This book cover for "Johnny Got His Gun" uses an indexical function by giving the outline of every image a rough texture. This use of texture allows for the cover to feel old and rustic. This allows the cover to signify something that isn't blatantly signified: the fact that this book takes place during World War 1. If the texture wasn't there it would feel too modern and wouldn't give the same historical feeling; this cover is similar to the Stubb's barbecue sauce example, appearing rustic.
Tumblr media
5). This image of a t-shirt made by a Solitude Brewing in Michigan. The symbolic function of this design is to make it feel old and rustic. Many people associate old and rustic with authenticity, which is seemingly important to beer drinkers. When a company has history, they also have a reputation for providing great products to customers for decades. The beer barrels in the back and old man holding a goblet really help associate a feeling of authenticity and an old history of brewing since it makes the brewery seem like it was founded in the early 1900s. Again, this shirt is similar to the Stubb's barbecue sauce example since it appears authentic and worth visiting.
Tumblr media
6). this tshirt, that I bought in 2021, uses a past style to create a welcoming feeling. The design is slightly weathered and vintage-looking, using a classic font that reminds me of a vintage postcard that someone visiting Breckenridge might send their friends. I think this style is trying to communicate friendliness, welcoming tourists to the quaint town, while also giving a sense of history as it was founded in the mid 1800s. Once more, this shirt is similar to the Stubb's barbecue sauce example since it makes Breckenridge appear authentic and worth visiting.

June 22, 2023
I have truly been remiss, but no time like the present. Here are some snapshots of the past month:
I may have mentioned Harvest Host? A yearly fee of approximately $80 and you have the opportunity to stay in a plethora of ranches, farms, wineries, breweries, distilleries, dairies… In exchange, one is expected to spend $20 and purchase their merchandise, or make a donation. We’ve had our share of Harvest Host experiences. Coastal Brewing Company in Savannah where we played bingo and won a crawler of beer, Grayce Wild Horse Preserve with exceptionally well cared for rescues, Stable View in South Carolina boasted hunter courses and pristine stables for the uppermost crust of equestrian riders, Animal Sanctuary where Debbie homed over 100 animals from pigs to parrots, ponies, dogs and cats and even a couple of rescue toads. She was on first name basis with all 100+ of them!
With every intention of getting back to California by August 15, we had a difficult time heading west. This was due to the stunning Blue Ridge Mountains just north of Asheville, NC. We’d been wanting to visit Asheville for years having heard about the amazing music scene. Either we visited the wrong time of year or it isn’t what it once was, but Eddie and I were underwhelmed when it came to finding good music. On the other hand, the old Amtrak warehouses converted into art studios, workshops and galleries made up for it in spades. We watched glass blowers blowing, silk screener screening, jewelers jeweling, potters potting. They offer workshops and the galleries are impressive and endless. We had to return for another day to get our fill. We stayed in 1899 Wright Inn B and B and were spoiled rotten. We were served exquisite two course breakfasts, wine and cheese in the afternoons and the house was a heritage site and gorgeous. Clifford was a bit jealous, but every once in a while we like to treat ourselves to the other side of life and Clifford will just have to get over it. Besides there was a tune up in his future, and that made up for the betrayal.
Tuned, oil changed, new windshield wiper mechanism, AC compression oil changed and we were ready to roll.
North from Asheville, onto the Blue Ridge Parkway to Pisgah. I never tire of a shibui landscape. Mum often used this word to describe a particular aesthetic of simple, subtle and unobtrusive beauty, usually in reference to a vista with mountains overlapping to the horizon. Green to black to grey to blue to white. The Blue Ridge Mountains truly do appear as blue. I could sit and contemplate that view for a very long time. We camped at Pisgah, Julian Price Lake, Linville Falls and Stone Mountain. At Linville Falls we watched a young man climb a 60+ foot waterfall and do triple flip loop-di-loops into the swimming hole below! We hiked 5 to 7 miles a day, saved a tortoise along the parkway from being run over. I’ve saved three so far. It is my calling, being the traveling turtles that we are… we’ve got to stick together. Blue Ridge Parkway runs north south and we are trying to head west, but we had to go as far north as the Blue Ridge Music Center, visit their museum and listen to locals playing their old time folk music. As tradition has it, songs get passed around the circle. When it came to the bass players turn, no one knew the song Across the Great Divide, by Kate Wolf. I raised my hand, pointed to Eddie and said “My husband knows it!” They invited him up to play with them. So Eddie got to sit in with the band. As serendipity has it, we discover that Watch Tower, formerly Mandolin Orange, were performing in the outdoor amphitheater that very night and they still had tickets. The only bad thing about that evening is that sitting around on festival chairs with friendly people and the grass beneath our toes gave us pangs of missing the Kate Wolf Music Festival.
Our journey West finally in earnest has begun. From the Blue Ridge to Virginia to Tennessee. One of our on the road less traveled stays was in Damascus, Virginia. The only reason we found this town of 800 was because I took a wrong turn, ended up on a dirt road and voila, we were in Damascus. We stopped to fill up Clifford’s belly and discovered that this town is the convergence of four trails, the Appalachian, U.S. Bicycle Route 76, The Iron Mountain Trail and the Virginia Creeper Trail. It is also on the route of the Daniel Boone Heritage Trail and the Crooked Road Music Heritage Trail. We hiked the Crooked Trail. The only music we found was a guy with his beat up guitar who’d been kicked out of his girlfriend’s house and was living out of his van. He played us a few toothless songs that he’d written about love lost. He only knew a few chords but had a pretty voice. We stayed in an old mill where the proprietors offered to do all of our laundry, even our sheets. What a treat! Once we got to Tennessee, we stayed at another Harvest Host on a dairy farm. The only proprietor we met there was an 11 year old boy who came zooming up on an ATV from somewhere down the road where his Grammy lived. He couldn’t visit with us long because his step-dad expected him to mow the fields before nightfall. Andrew was well mannered and curious about everything in Clifford. He asked questions about the engine that we couldn’t answer and asked to take a spin on our electric bikes, which of course we obliged. He was homeschooled because there was too much work on the farm. Children grow up fast in these part and he couldn’t have been a nicer young gentleman. With the sun beginning to set, he rushed off jumped on a massive John Deere tractor which engulfed him and adeptly road off into the mowing sunset.
A few more nights, with day visits to the Country Music Museum in Bristol, where the first ever recordings of country music were made, a zip through Knoxville and another Harvest Host night at Short Mountain Distillery. The land and high mineral content of the spring water is home to this distillery which has been making moonshine, whiskey and bourbon for centuries. Al Capone was a frequent visitor to this land. Al Capone!
And then there’s Nashville where just by serendipity, our middle name, we discovered that Bruce Cockburn was playing Saturday Night at the CMA (Country Music Association) and Jackson Browne was playing Sunday night at the Opry House. We procured tickets for Bruce and emailed Jackson’s manager… Lucky us, Eddie and I both got to teach/counsel Jackson’s nephew for four years at Happy Valley School in Ojai. Jackson was Jay’s guardian so we had the opportunity to get to know him. We are very grateful and tickled pink to have gotten to sit 5 rows back and center and hear him perform for three hours in such an iconic venue. He was awesome. And Bruce of course was fabulous too!! Broadway in Nashville is Bourbon St in New Orleans on crack. The cacophony of colliding country bands mixed with drunken bachelorettes and dazzled tourists in cowgirl boots and 10 gallon hats is enough stimulation to last a lifetime. We watched in wonder and went home to our Airbnb. Monday night we went to The Station Inn to hear a country bluegrass band with a very dignified audience. It’s just a little hole in the wall with pizza, popcorn and pop, but the musicianship is phenomenal. On Tuesday night we went to The Grand Ole’ Opry because when in Rome…. The land of Dolly Parton and Roy Acuff. Riders in the Sky started off the show. Four really old dudes who looked like character out of the Coen Brother’s movie, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. We witnessed one girl have her debut Opry experience. She performed with her two brothers on guitar on either side of her. And a slew of other music vignettes ripe with songs about booze, trucks, Jesus, boots and betrayal. Whew, we survived Nashville! From there we happily climbed aboard out trusty Cliffy and ventured back into the woods and streams and trails.
Alrighty friends, until next time, Love and hugs,
Karen

Beer Pong Day is observed every year on the first Saturday of May, and it's a time to gather with friends and enjoy a friendly competition while sipping on your favorite beers. In this article, we'll explore the origins of Beer Pong Day, the rules of the game, and some tips for hosting your own Beer Pong Day celebration. Origins of Beer Pong Day Beer Pong Day was first celebrated in 2011 by two friends, Derek Jorgensen and Evan Weinstein. The idea was to create a day dedicated to the game they loved and to spread the joy of beer pong to the masses. The event quickly gained popularity, and today, Beer Pong Day is celebrated by beer pong enthusiasts worldwide. The Rules of Beer Pong Beer pong is a simple game that can be played by anyone, regardless of their skill level. Here are the basic rules: Setting up the Game - Fill 10 plastic cups with beer and arrange them in a pyramid shape at either end of a long table. - Divide into two teams and stand at opposite ends of the table. - Each team takes turns trying to throw ping pong balls into the other team's cups. Playing the Game - The objective is to land the ping pong ball into the opposing team's cup. If you succeed, your opponent must drink the beer from that cup. - If both teammates make their shots, they get to shoot again until they miss. - The game ends when one team successfully lands a ping pong ball into all of the opposing team's cups. Additional Rules - Each team can have one "re-rack" per game, which means they can rearrange the cups into a different shape. - If a ball lands in a cup that has already been made, it doesn't count and the player gets to shoot again. - If a ball bounces off the table before landing in a cup, the opposing team can swat it away to prevent it from going in. Hosting Your Own Beer Pong Day Celebration Hosting your own Beer Pong Day celebration is a great way to bring friends together for some friendly competition and good times. Here are some tips for making your event a success: Choose a Venue Select a location that has enough space for a long table and plenty of room for people to move around. Provide Snacks and Refreshments Beer pong can be a thirsty game, so make sure to have plenty of water and other non-alcoholic beverages on hand. You can also provide snacks like chips, pretzels, and dip to keep everyone fueled up for the competition. Conclusion Beer Pong Day is a fun and lighthearted celebration of friendship and camaraderie. Are flavor infused beers popular?
Beer retailers and bar operators are seeing the potential of flavour-infused brews as they meet the consumer demand for new experiences. Various leading brands are now selling flavoured brews, including Blue Moon, Shock Top, and MillerCoors' Leinenkugel Summer Shandy. In addition to their premium offerings, many of these companies now offer various packs containing multiple flavours. These 12-packs are popular among consumers, as consumers can sample several flavours within one 12-pack.
The latest beer flavouring trend is introducing foods into the grain bill. For instance, some breweries throw chocolate cake, Swedish fish, whole chicken parmesan sandwiches, and more into their batches. While this process is polarizing for purists, beer drinkers are often impressed by these innovative products.
One brewer, Dogfish Head, has taken the sour beer style to the next level. The brand's SuperEIGHT sour beer features blackberry, elderberry, and mango as flavours in the beer. Other flavours include raspberry and prickly pear.
The variety of flavours available in beer is nearly unlimited. The latest studies indicate that about 20% of beer drinkers have tried at least one flavoured brew in the past year. Of these, 57% have increased their consumption. The trend is especially popular with young women. According to one study, women aged 22 to 34 are the biggest fans of flavoured brews.
Fruit-flavoured brews are growing in popularity among beer drinkers. However, in addition to fruit-flavoured brews, there is also a range of flavoured stouts. A coffee-flavoured beer, for example, is made by steeping coffee beans in a mixture of beer and water.
While the popularity of flavour-infused beer may not be widespread yet, it is gaining ground among craft brewers. More brewers are experimenting with non-traditional flavours, like chocolate, mango, and dragon fruit. They can also add flavour to a traditional beer to enhance and emphasize its original flavour.
Flavour-infused beer is not new, and many popular brands have been experimenting with the concept. Great Divide Brewing Company, for example, offers a mango-infused IPA. It is available in the U.K. for $8 for a ten-ounce pour. The flavoured beer is served in fluted stemware with garnishes if desired. For those who want to try their hand at flavour-infused brews, they will be able to find some that taste great and are fun to drink.
Some of these breweries use a variety of herbs and spices to add different flavours to the brew. Crushed red chilli peppers, for example, impart a spicy flavour. These peppers are also used to make tea, which helps reduce heat levels and prevent sediment from entering the brew. Rosehips, on the other hand, add fruity and herbal beer flavours to beers.

Things to Keep In Mind While Purchasing Coffee Grinder
Getting a better cup of Coffee doesn't necessitate an upgrade in your coffee maker. Having an electric coffee grinder is said to be the key to making the best cup of joy. The main reason is that it gives you more control over the brewing procedure. It allows you to choose the grind size you decide at any time. Every brewing method and brew duration has a specific grind size. It is possible to use a coffee grinder with various brewers at once. You may achieve a coarse grind by using a French press. You can ground the beans to a fine powder using an espresso grinder. Before buying a coffee grinder, here are some things to remember:
A comparison of burr vs blade grinders -
Coffee grinders can be divided into two categories: burr and blade—dishwasher Parts. With a propeller-like blade, they work like blenders and ground Coffee similarly. They're a more cost-effective option. Flat and conical burrs fall into the burr category. The conical burr grinder is a popular choice among experts in the food and beverage business.
Grind consistency -
Blade grinders chop rather than grind. Hence their output isn't always consistent in size. A bad-tasting brew or a damaged brewery can result from this. The conical burrs on the Smeg coffee grinder ensure a uniform grind.
Adjusting the grind size -
To what extent are you open to modifying the grind size? When using the Smeg coffee grinder in manual mode, the control knob smoothly rotates, providing you with complete control over the grinder's 30 grinding stages. "ACB COFFEE" (acbcoffeesupply.com) is the platform where you may explore a huge variety of Coffee grinders.
Grinder capacity -
If you drink a lot of Coffee, you'll need a coffee grinder to handle your needs. Using the Smeg coffee grinder's eight pre-programmed modes, you may grind a specific amount of Coffee. It has a 12-cup capacity.
To keep the temperature at a safe level, you -
The oil in coffee beans is susceptible to temperature changes, leading to flavour degradation. Compared to a flat burr and blade, the conical burr in Smeg coffee grinders generate much less heat. In addition, conical burr coffee grinders are quiet to run.
Components utilized -
Contact with various items can alter the flavour of Coffee. The taste of your Coffee will not be compromised by using the Smeg coffee grinder. Because of the stainless-steel conical burr's non-corrosive nature, you can be sure to get uniformly ground Coffee that tastes great. The Smeg coffee grinder is a durable and reliable piece of equipment. The aluminum die-cast body is light and sturdy at the same time.
The convenience of maintenance:
A thorough cleaning is the most straightforward and essential part of any machine's regular maintenance. The Smeg coffee grinder's replaceable conical burr and the supplied cleaning brush make this task a cinch. Maintaining cleanliness is also a priority thanks to its anti-static system. If friction and various materials are present, static may be unavoidable.
Final Words…!!!
There are many things to consider before purchasing a coffee grinder, as many aspects go into making a decent grind. A grinder's value in Coffee is being recognized, and there are more and more efficient grinders available. If you want to purchase a perfect Espresso grinder, visit the "ACB COFFEE" (acbcoffeesupply.com) and pick one from a large range of quality products.

7 Best Places To Visit In Paris France
Paris is a huge city with a rich history, with many places to visit, but my advice is to start with these 7 best places I have chosen for you.
"When good people die, they go to Paris!" Are the words of the great Oscar Wilde. Well, Paris is hardly exactly Paradise. If you deviate from the famous tourist routes, you may find it even a little dirty, crowded and quite noisy. However, the charm of the "City of Love" is irresistible.
In Paris you can see some of the most famous architectural structures ever built by man, such as: the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame Cathedral, the Champs-Elysées, etc. But the great charm of this city, at least for me personally, is due to its radiance. It is hidden in the small details that attract romantics from all over the world like a magnet. Small details, such as cobbled streets and beautifully arranged trees. Cozy cafes and pastry shops on every corner. Belle Époque-style breweries, avant-garde art galleries open to art and artists from around the world.
 1.The Eiffel Tower
This is perhaps the most famous architectural monument in the world, the emblem of Paris. Today it is hard for us to believe, but when it was discovered, the tower was described as "terrible" and "monstrous".
The Eiffel Tower was designed by Alexander-Gustave Eiffel and was built for the Paris Exhibition of 1889, held in honor of the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. The facility consists of 15,000 steel sections fastened together with 2.5 million rivets.
At 307 meters high, the tower remained the tallest architectural structure in the world until 1931, when the Empire State Building in New York (381 meters) took away its championship.
The Eiffel Tower has three levels, the top of which is located at a dizzying 276 meters. You can get there by a panoramic elevator, which is taken from the second level. And the view from the top is: "WOW"!
Practical tips:
 1) Book your tickets in advance so you don't have to wait in line.
2) Visit the Eiffel Tower in the evening when it is lit and looks! Unique! In about 15 minutes you will witness a light show.
3) Prices and working hours:
Working hours: every day
From 15 June to 1 September from 9:00 AM to 12:00 AM;
During the rest of the year - from 9.30 am to 11.00 pm;
Around Easter and spring break - extended working hours until midnight.
Prices:* Up to the second level - Adults: 9 E; children from 12 to 14 years: 7.50 E; for children from 4 to 11 years: 4.50 E;
* To the top - Adults: 15 E; children from 12 to 14 years: 13.50 E; for children from 4 to 11 years: 10.50 E;
To the staircase (valid up to the second level) -
For an adult: 5 E; for children from 12 to 14 years: 4 E; for children from 4 to 11 years: 3 E;
 2.The Louvre
The magnificent palace, once home to French kings, is now an amazing museum of art. In his yard is the famous "Glass Pyramid" designed by Leo Min Pei in 1917.
The Louvre has more than 30,000 works of art - from antiquity to modern times. It is impossible to see everything in just one visit or one day. Therefore, I recommend that you focus on a specific gallery. Among the most attractive are the galleries of classical sculpture, the Italian Renaissance, the French artists of the 17th century.
And don't miss the biggest "star" of the exhibition: "Mona Lisa" (a.k.a. "The Mona Lisa") by Leonardo da Vinci!
The exhibitions are divided into three departments: Denon, Richelieu and Sully.
 Work time:
 - from 9:00 to 18:00 every day except Tuesday
- until 21.45 on Wednesday and Friday
Closed on January 1st, May 1st and December 25th.
 Prices: for an adult - 12 €
 * every first Sunday of the month - free of charge
The Louvre Palace itself is a landmark of impressive architecture. It is surrounded by the Tuileries Gardens, one of the largest and most beautiful parks in Paris, by the famous landscape architect Andre Le Notre. The park has perfectly structured trees, decorative water pools and nice benches where you can sit to enjoy the beauty around you (or have a quick breakfast :).
 3.Notre Dame de Paris Cathedral
Notre Dame Cathedral (Holy Mother of God) is a triumph of Gothic architecture. It is located in the heart of Paris on the island of Cité in the Latin Quarter. This island on the Seine is the historical and geographical center of the city.
On this small piece of land, the Celtic tribe of Paris created the first settlement, and then the Romans built the Gallo-Roman city of Lutetia, from which Paris was born.
In the later period, from the 6th to the 14th century, the island was the residence of French kings.
Notre Dame Cathedral was built in 1163 by King Louis IX (St. Louis) and Bishop Maurice.
The whole construction lasts 150 years. The style is early and late gothic.
The ornamental design of the facade will immediately grab your attention. The abundance of sculptures, flying buttresses and gargoyles will take your breath away.
The interior of the sanctuary is a huge arched space, the most distinctive part of the interior are the beautiful stained glass windows. I recommend you pay more attention to the pink window in the north transept. This is a unique work of art containing 80 Old Testament scenes inspired by the Blessed Virgin.
Every Saturday and Sunday from 19:15 the cathedral offers a special audio-visual show, which takes place on a tulle screen with a size of 100 sq.m.
 Admission is free.
Opening hours: Every day from 8.00 am to 6.45 pm, except on Saturdays and Sundays, when it is open until 7.15 pm
Be sure to check out the 21 figures in the Gallery of Kings who lost their heads during the French Revolution (the heads are on display in the Clooney Museum).
Interesting fact: There is a belief that if you turn on the square in front of Notre Dame Cathedral, you will return to Paris. The question is: do you want ??
Unfortunately, on April 15, 2019. this great Cathedral is suffering a terrible tragedy… A fire broke out in Notre Dame, the reasons for which are still unclear.
After a long struggle with the flames at night, the fire was contained. Fortunately, 2 of the iconic towers and many works of art preserved in Notre Dame have been saved.
 5.The Arc de Triomphe
The Arc de Triomphe is dedicated to the victories of the French armies of the Revolution and the First Empire. Napoleon ordered this mighty structure to be built in 1806, but did not live to see it completed in 1836.
Designed by JF Chalgrin, the arch includes larger than real-life reliefs of figures depicting the departure, victories and glorious return of French armies.
On the inside of the arch are inscribed the names of more than 660 generals and more than 100 glorious battles.
The observation deck of the arch offers a panoramic view of the 12 avenues (boulevards) radially located from the square "De Etoal ..
 Work time:
- from 10:00 to 23:00 from 01.04 to 30.09
- from 10.00-22: 30 from 01.10 to 31.03
 Price: 9 €
6.The Basilica of the Sacré-Coeur (Sacred Heart) and Montmartre
Visiting this God-pleasing place is one of my fondest memories of Paris.
Climbing the sacred hill of Paris, Montmartre, where the Roman Catholic Basilica is located, is an adventure.
The cobblestones winding like serpentines in the Alps, the streets are very beautiful - especially in summer when the roses are blooming. And when you climb the hill and see this architectural work of art in the Romano-Byzantine style, you will understand why it is called the "White Church". It really is dazzling white!
It is built of a special type of stone, calcite, which releases white matter when it rains. This guarantees the famous white color of the basilica and the eternal purity of the Sacred Heart.
Montmartre Hill is the second highest point in the city (after the Eiffel Tower) and from the stairs in front of the church there is a beautiful view of Paris. Without a doubt, one of the best places for selfies!
 7.The catacombs of Paris
“Stop! This is the empire of death! ” reads an inscription just before entering the catacombs. You need to know that the queues in front of them are long and the experience is a bit eerie, so if you are sensitive and uncomfortable with tight and humid spaces / suffering from claustrophobia - think before you embark on this adventure. If that doesn't scare you, act boldly!
In fact, these catacombs appeared after a protest by Parisians who were against the large cemetery in the city. This led to the creation of this "landmark", as all the bones and skulls were moved here - the bones are nearly 6 million people, which creates the reputation of the catacombs of "the largest cemetery in the world." The corridors are about 2 km long and are located about 20 meters below the streets of Paris.
Their official name is "Public Ossuaries", but they are known as the Catacombs of Paris.
Opening hours: 10 am to 5 pm every day except Monday
Price: 8 euros (discount for persons under 25 from the EU - 4 E); children up to 12 years - free
***
From stylish fashion boutiques to fine cuisine, from one of the most famous cathedrals to the sinister catacombs, Paris is synonymous with a sophisticated lifestyle and absolute freedom of existence! Paris is a city that is sure to create amazing memories for you. They call it the "City of Love", the "Sin City", the "Capital of Fashion"… Check for yourself which city Paris will become for you.
  * Recommendation: use the subway to get around - do not rent a car or taxi - this is the only way to avoid huge traffic jams in t

NAME: Gabriel Knox GENDER & PRONOUNS: Cis Man / He/Him AGE & DATE OF BIRTH: 42 years old / April 14th HOMETOWN: Great Falls, MT TIME IN GREAT FALLS: 42 years RESIDENCE: Canyon Point OCCUPATION: Owner of Zodiac Brewery
BACKSTORY —
trigger warnings: alcoholism, death of a child, death of a spouse, depression, physical injury.
For as far back as anyone alive can remember, the Knox family has called Great Falls, Montana, home. They started out as humble farmers looking to work the land and raise cattle before the Prohibition Era sent future generations of the family down a completely different path. Now, the Knox family is widely known around town for their signature craft brews lining the walls of Zodiac Brewery. Gabriel Knox is just the latest in a long line of brewers hellbent on keeping the family tradition alive– and flowing.
He didn’t start out that way, though. Thomas Knox, Gabe’s father, had other plans for his eldest son that never involved taking over the family business from his uncle. Thomas’s brother had enough children of his own who could one day inherit the brewery and all the problems that came with it. Instead, he wanted Gabriel to become a lawyer or a doctor, maybe even run for public office one day. Unfortunately for Thomas, his son had plans of his own. From the moment he came barreling into this world, Gabriel was a wild child– a far cry from his name’s biblical undertones.
Growing up, he stayed in and out of trouble, supplying his parents with a nonstop headache and his younger siblings with the perfect example of what not to do. Despite his penchant for trouble, Gabe was a bright kid– perhaps too bright in that school never held his interest long enough for him to be good at it. He could crunch numbers quicker than most of the other kids in his class and his photographic memory stored every lesson whether he wanted it to or not, but school never thrilled him. Between behavioral issues and his general lackadaisical attitude towards his studies, Gabe was kicked out of Great Falls High during his sophomore year.
Not long after his expulsion from school, Gabriel started working as a hand at the Ward Ranch, a move that his father hoped might temper the wild boy he was into a tame, responsible man. Far from tamable, the experiment was only partially successful– if he learned nothing else from his time on the ranch, Gabe learned responsibility. Little by little, he was entrusted with more duties on the ranch and it became less of a job, and more of a way of life. He moved from mucking stalls and mending fences to herding cattle and training horses. Finally, Gabe began to peak.
Over the next several years, he lived for rodeo nights and neon lights. When he wasn’t working on the ranch, he was barrel racing or, much to his father’s dismay, hanging around with his uncle and learning a new trade: brewing. Regardless of how he spent his time, Gabe lived for every thrill he could find. Along the way, he met his future wife, Addison. Initially, the two of them were simply using each other and living for the moment, never once thinking about the future-- at least not until two pink lines snapped them both back to reality. With the prospect of fatherhood staring him in the face, he bought a ring and proposed. Gabriel couldn't exactly admit to marrying for love, but he'd promised Addison that he'd be there to help raise their baby, and at twenty-seven years old, Gabe became a father to their firstborn son, Tyler.
The next few years were a balancing act for Gabe, having to divide his time between his family and his work. During that time, he couldn't claim that he always had his attention where it belonged, but shortly after his thirtieth birthday, he got a wake-up call. A riding accident at the rodeo one night left him with a concussion, a broken leg, and a shattered shoulder blade, forcing him to slow down when he would have otherwise kept on going. Once he healed, he planned to dive right back in but Addison left him with little choice, threatening him with a divorce if he didn't get his priorities in order.
Ultimately, Gabe took a step back and started looking more and more at the family business. Eventually, he got his GED and worked closely with his uncle over the next couple years. At age thirty-three, he made the decision to formally leave the Ward Ranch and take over Zodiac Brewery. It wasn't the ranch life he'd grown to love and lean on over the years, but Gabe enjoyed the change of pace and was proud to finally call something his own. But that wasn't the only change headed his way. Two years later, following a surprise pregnancy, Gabe and Addison welcomed twins, Logan and Lochlyn.
It finally felt as though the bits and pieces of his life were sliding into place. The brewery was doing well, his kids were healthy and happy, his marriage was back on track, and he still spent most Friday nights at the rodeo-- only as a spectator this time. Gabe couldn't complain.
But then one year ago, everything changed and the world as Gabe knew it ended right in front of his eyes. Addison had taken Logan to soccer practice one evening and couldn't get her car to start on the way home, so she called Gabe to come pick them up. Leaving Tyler and Lochlyn in the care of a family member, he set out to get his wife and son. On the way home, a drunk driver slammed into Gabe's truck, killing Addison and Logan on impact, and critically injuring Gabe. In the crash, he sustained multiple injuries, including L1 and L2 spinal fractures requiring surgical repair. Due to the extent of his spinal cord injury, Gabe spent the next several months in rehab re-learning how to walk.
Now, a year later, Gabe is still struggling to get his life back on track. A grieving, single father to Tyler and Lochlyn, he's working hard to make ends meet and be the rock his broken family needs him to be. But his demons often get the best of him and the only solace he can find is usually at the bottom of a bottle. Still, he's slowly but surely resurfacing and clinging to any semblance of normalcy that he can find in the town he's always called home.
Portrayed by JOE MANGIANELLO, written by GREY.
