okay since I’ve been replaying me2 again I need to talk about this again from Kat’s perspective—

But like… this is an important moment for her. Since waking up, she has been bombarded by absolute chaos. She wakes up, and she’s gotta fight her way out past mechs. She meets people she doesn’t know, but who seem to know her (on a personal level). And the last memory she has, before waking up to chaos, is the feeling of DYING. Of choking on her last few breaths, of the fear that came from that, the pain, everything. And she’s thrown back into a world of chaos.

She gets thrown into a warzone on Freedom’s Progress, and Tali practically rejects her (albeit not harshly, but for someone who just woke up and got told it’d been two years, that’s a lot in one go, given her last memories of Tali would have been much more jovial and friendly). She’s dealing with Cerberus and the Illusive Man, and she hates them with a burning passion because of Akuze.

And then there’s Joker, with his jovial, “Just like old times, huh?” and the goofy, friendly smile he always wears.

He doesn’t call attention to the fact that it’s been two years, and he doesn’t put the pressure on her. He answers her questions, honestly, but treats her like she’s really herself. He’s happy to see her, happy she’s alive, and doesn’t treat her like she’s done something wrong or something horrible. Maybe that’s his guilt (that’s for others to interpret) but for Kat? It’s huge. It’s monumental. It’s a moment where she can breathe. And she’s genuinely happy to see him, too, because he’s someone she can trust.

So... to preface this, many of Katrina's crimes were done under her authority as a Council Spectre. What this essentially means is that during these times, she is considered above the law, therefore she is technically not committing a crime by the same standards as others. Key examples:

MURDER: Yes, she murdered the scientists responsible for Akuze that Toombs identified. However, they killed 50 of her fellow marines for the sake of experimentation, and tortured Toombs for years following the incident. Also, you know... crashing an asteroid into a mass relay that destroyed an entire star system, including a colony of 300,000 batarians.

B&E / THEFT: Yes, she broke into Donovan Hock's vault with Kasumi's help... but Hock was a notorious criminal who murdered Keiji Okuda for his greybox. Kat simply helped steal it back from Hock.

TRESPASSING: Again, trespassing on Hock's vault, sneaking into batarian space to rescue an Alliance operative... yeah.

TREASON: She did steal the Alliance's most advanced warship (the Normandy SR-1) from the Citadel when ordered by Ambassador Udina and the Citadel Council to remain grounded. But... she was trying to save the galaxy. And she did.

LIBEL/SLANDER: Technically in-game for comedy purposes... but she accused an asari shopkeep of discrimination for a discount. Look, she pays an assload of credits for her gear, she deserves the damn discount.

LYING TO LAW ENFORCEMENT: Well, technically it was none of Parasini's business that she killed the ERCS guards that were being paid under the table by Anoleis... it's classified Spectre business. Noveria Internal Affairs didn't need to know...

CREATION OF A WEAPON: She did help a salarian Special Tasks Group team create a giant bomb out of their drive core. In fact, she helped deliver the payload to the center of Saren's cloning facility. For the sake of blowing it up. And you could argue finalizing the course of flying a giant asteroid into a mass relay also counts, given it wiped out an entire star system. (She was trying to stop the Reapers, okay? And she did... again.)

DESTRUCTION OF EVIDENCE: Keiji Okuda's greybox held information that would have put the Systems Alliance at risk legally. So... she destroyed it. It was not information that she wanted to fall into the wrong hands.

ASSASSINATION: Probably too many instances of this to count. Although, whether it's assassination or murder is... a grey area. I guess you could argue she assassinated Udina...... who was staging a coup to take over the Citadel on behalf of Cerberus, who were known terrorists.

HACKING CRIMES: She's hacked doors, she also followed a money-laundering AI across the Citadel and shut it down... just too many of these to list.

THREATEN: She did threaten to blow Fist's "lying head off"... got pretty aggressive in an interrogation helping Thane stop his son assassinating a racist politician... Sometimes people listen better when you light a fire under their ass, okay?

Yeah, there's a reason law enforcement hates Spectres... because despite all of these crimes, they were all, technically, under legal pretense a la her Spectre authority.

Technically speaking, no. Anything that would have been considered "unlawful" by the standards of the average person, or even the average soldier, were things Katrina did under Spectre authority, and generally with good reason. For example, she did mutiny and steal the galaxy's most advanced warship... in order to get to Ilos, find Saren, and stop the Reapers coming through the Conduit, the mass relay located directly on the Citadel. This helped to delay the Reapers' arrival for over three years.

And yes, technically she worked (not for, with) with a xenophobic terrorist organization (Cerberus)... but the crew she was responsible for as part of Cerberus were working to save human colonies being kidnapped by the Collectors on behalf of the Reapers. She ended that one by stealing their best ship (the Normandy SR-2), the best pilot in the galaxy (Jeff Moreau), their former second-in-command (Miranda Lawson), their Enhanced Defense Intelligence AI (EDI), their second AI creation (Eva Corè, with EDI's assistance), some of their best engineers (Gabriella Daniels and Kenneth Donnelly), and a ton of credits and resources they'd gathered. Or, in Joker's terms, "got loose and started killing all their guys".

And yes, she did blow up a mass relay, killing three hundred thousand batarians in the process and wiping out an entire star system... but it delayed the appearance of the Reapers for six months, giving the galaxy a bit more time to prepare.

And yes, she did kill the human Councillor and arguably the only living politician for humanity during the war... but he was helping Cerberus stage a coup to take over the Citadel and kill the turian, asari, and salarian Councillors.

In short: yes. But only for a good reason.

💐 - Favourite type of flower

Lavender. Really, Katrina's a fan of just about any purple flower, but if she had to pick, she'd pick lavender, hydrangeas, and delphiniums. Part of this is because she really likes the smell of lavender, and finds it calming.

You get more than one because my brain said so--

Joker is the only person Kat’s cabin is never locked to. While she might want her privacy from others, Kat knows that if Joker takes the time to hobble up to her cabin, she’s not locking the goddamn door, because it’s probably serious.

She actually likes his sense of humour, though she’s sometimes stoic about it. In a lot of cases she’ll note he’s earned the right for a few bad jokes, but she welcomes it to a degree; his humour helps alleviate tension and keeps people from getting too tense in situations. If he’s not careful, though, she may give as good as she gets...

She never once blamed him for her death. She understood his attachment and understood that, under the immense pressure of the situation, thinking straight is difficult. Compared to her, he wasn’t really trained for that type of scenario—it’s in a lot of ways outside the scope of his job as a pilot—and she knew it was her job to make sure as many people got out safely, not his. For her, it was a relief to see him after she woke up; she was glad that his was the first truly friendly and welcoming face (sorry Tali) that she saw.

SELF-CARE REGIME

What’s their go-to shampoo and conditioner combination?

Out of the standard-issue soap the Alliance gives her, Kat migrates to citrus scents, usually. Her shampoo however has the faint scent of peppermint and tea tree in it.

What other hair products do they use ?

Since her hair is incredibly fine and brittle, she also keeps it moisturized with various natural oils, preferably coconut and jojoba oils if she can get them. This keeps her hair quite soft and well-maintained. Keeping her hair moisturized (and not dry) is important to help control static discharge (as, like a drive core, she builds up small amounts of electrical charge in her body due to her biotics which discharge generally on contact with metal, so the less natural static she avoids building up outside of what her biotics generate, the better.)

What kind of fragrances do they use?

Kat doesn't wear fragrances, as she's not a fan of them; the closest you might get is the smell of her antiperspirant, which has a distinct mix of citrus to it.

What skin products do they use?

Kat doesn't use much more than basic moisturizer, though she uses some tea tree oil and jojoba oil combinations to keep her skin from drying out too much. She has incredibly dry skin and has to maintain it so it doesn't itch or irritate her; conversely, her skin is actually incredibly sensitive to most things, so she has to be careful what she uses on it.

How do they treat their skin conditions?

For her dry skin, she sticks to tea tree and jojoba oils. After Akuze (but prior to her reconstruction by Cerberus), she was also issued extra unscented, sensitive-skin body lotion to keep her scars moisturized as they dry out easier than the rest of her skin and will chafe if she doesn't take care of them, which can lead to further health issues.

What’s their go-to tooth paste?

Nothing fancy; she goes with whatever the Alliance provides her, which is usually mint-flavoured. She will admit she has a soft spot for anything bubblegum flavoured, though.

How do they tend to their nails?

Kat's nails are kept filed down almost to the quick, and she will take the time to keep a base and clear coat on them just to keep them from breaking and causing damage. She also regularly moisturizes her cuticles to keep them from cracking.

Sort of a hilarious thing when it comes to alcohol and Kat, but… Compared to other humans (especially after the Alchera incident), alcohol has little to no effect on her. She’s so resistant, she’s capable of drinking straight ryncol:

Ryncol is an extremely potent liquor created by the krogan. Its exact composition is unknown, but it is clearly a very strong drink, given that it is created by and for the krogan. Grunt comments that ryncol “hits aliens like ground glass.” […] Ryncol is highly acidic, capable of melting through machinery.

Because of the way alcohol functions in the body–effectively, it is a poison to the body–Katrina’s cybernetic implants and upgrades from Cerberus make her highly resistant to it, much like she is to other toxins. Light alcohols like beers or coolers are processed by her body too rapidly to have any effect, which is why if she wants a buzz, she’d have to drink strong alcohols, generally straight.

Leaving the people that are important to her behind. Kat’s no stranger to loss; she knows the kind of agony it causes, and she never wants to be the reason someone else suffers that way. Her regret’s are simple: she regrets leaving them so suddenly, with no warning whatsoever.

One could argue that she’s a biotic god(dess), given her talents, so… do what needs to be done, like she always does. Do everything for the greater good, to save the most lives, etc. Godhood wouldn’t really change her; given the fame she carries in the galaxy, along with the fact that she cheated death, the argument could be made she comes close...

Katrina's someone who likes to sleep in, given the chance. Being in space it's not affected as much as there's no sunlight for her circadian rhythm to handle, but when she's on a planet she prefers to wake up late and stay up late. On Earth I'd say she'd wake up between 10am-11am and probably go to bed closer to 1am or 2am.

🔎 - Random detail about them

Kat hates bananas. She'll eat some foods that have banana in them, but you'll never catch her eating a banana raw. The taste doesn't bother her, it's more of an issue with the texture. She may, however, eat banana chips as they've been dried (and she does like banana bread).

She may occasionally pronounce certain words with a British accent, but it's very rare. This is because one of her parents was actually from London, and while her brother picked up more of the accent than she did, she occasionally blends one or two words in here or there. It's only the occasional phonetic pronunciation and slang, however. Most of the slang was picked up from her brother, given he spent a lot more time in England on Earth than she did.

Who would / do they believe without question?

Anderson, Hackett, and her brother. In AUs where he's around, Ryker is actually the one thing that keeps Katrina sane through most of what goes on in her life. Even when she's questioning her own identity, Ryker's insistence that she is his little sister keeps her from entirely succumbing to the thoughts that plague her, though it doesn't fully keep them at bay. As for Anderson, Katrina looks up to him both as a superior and as a father figure. Hackett she has a deep respect for and knows that although he is the Admiral of the Fifth Fleet and commands the entirety of the Systems Alliance Navy -- a position that is notably political in nature in many ways -- she also trusts that Hackett knows what he's talking about.
