“A nicker is poetry.” Weed answered abruptly.

“Oh.” Bright Eyes said.

There was silence.

It was broken by the Milliondollar Horse asking very meekly: “What’s a poetry?”

Ace of Hearts scowled, and Weed sighed before he rolled slowly onto his stomach. He lay in the mud, digging his hooves into it before he answered finally: “All horses know what poetry is. It’s the horsesong that bursts out of you when you see a herdmate after a long time apart, or feel joy and freedom.”

Bright Eyes furrowed her brow, and the Milliondollar Horse brightened. “Then I must poetry all the time! I love my Rider and I always can’t help but sing for her every time she rides me and works so hard to make me better!”

Weed averted his eyes.

Bright Eyes asked: “How do you know what’s a nicker, and what’s not?”

Ace of Hearts huffed. “How do you know how to trot or canter or gallop?”

“The Rider!” blurted the Milliondollar Horse.

“No, you turd. You were born to run and race. To be faster than the Wind.” Ace of Hearts overrode. “You just know!”

“But how can I know if I don’t know? How can I do something if I don’t know what to do?” Bright Eyes asked worriedly.

Weed sighed, then answered: “When you nicker, you know. And once you’ve sung it, you can sing it again. Some horses sing the same song their whole lives to the very same thing they love. Some horses sing a different song every time they nicker. But you remember every song you sing.”

“Can you nicker for us then, Weed?” asked Bright Eyes, and the Milliondollar Horse nodded encouragingly.

Ace of Hearts scowled, raising her head high and laying her ears back, and Bright Eyes shrank away in worry. Had she been rude?

But then, Ace of Hearts’ ears lifted and listened as Weed murmured a low and rumbling song:

“Hello meaning to my day, let me carry you away.”

Weed fell silent.

Bright Eyes tilted her head, and asked: “That’s it?”

The Milliondollar Horse scowled. “That was not very good at all.”

But Weed only smiled, and answered: “Of course it isn’t. Every nicker is a song of a moment. A moment that is beyond worth to me, but worthless to you; a moment long gone and that can never be reclaimed. A moment memorialized in that nicker, when there was such joy, so that I will never forget it... and I don’t know if it is because the heart is strong enough to hope for happiness, or the mind cruel enough to remind myself of everything that’s been lost.”
