It’s ALL that and much more. Underground nightlife scenes will blow your mind and ruin your entire next day (lol). Berlin is so many things wrapped up into one city, and the only way I can adequately describe it is this: it’s anything but mainstream. What’s “in” is actually “out” here. The WWII history and rise/fall of the Wall not only materializes museum after museum but complexities and pieces left for Berliners to pick up. Any attempt to put a label on the city becomes futile because it chooses to be defined by its complexities and contradictions – not by beauty, wealth, or industry. And I absolutely love that.

W-Der Imbiss – In the heavy foot-traffic neighborhood of Mitte lies an Indian food spot that’ll satisfy all of your taste-bud needs. Order the Tasters Menu full of alllll the winners and bask in the naan glory.

POTS – Hands down my favorite dining experience in Berlin because not only was everything in copper pots as seen in the open-concept kitchen but also the food inventions were delicious (think classics with a modern twist) and the staff was crazy memorable. Biergartens

Cassiopeia – Nightclub by evening but an even better biergarten by day! Berlin is FULL of hidden gems around every corner – which is why lots of walking is required to find said gems (or just keep reading this post). With a rock climbing wall, biergarten and food stalls, I could spend many hours at this repurposed rail station.

Holzmarkt – SO nice we went here twice

This eclectic spot by the river is full of yummy coffee, beer (duh), lively crowds and delicious pizza. Learned here that customers pay a deposit, or Pfand surcharge, to the bar/food stall and can get it back when bottles are returned.

FUN FACT: The German Pfand system was brought into force to ensure that there was a responsible policy in place for the recycling of plastic bottles. It encourages drinks companies to supply their product in multi-use, refillable plastic or glass bottles. These can be refilled up to 25 times for the plastic variety and up to 50 times for glass which reduces the average CO2 emissions per bottle in circulation because fewer new bottles have to be manufactured. The process of washing and sterilizing these bottles is loads more environmentally friendly in terms of CO2 output than the production of single-use bottles.

Museums & Memorials

Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe – Also known as the Holocaust Memorial, this space holds 2,711 concrete slabs of varying heights and wavelike in form. There’s a somber mood over the area with a side of uncertainty as the observer wanders through the tall slabs. Don’t miss the underground Rooms for more information from families and victims.

Topography of Terror – It’s strange that this history museum, the former site of both the Gestapo and SS headquarters, was a highlight of Berlin for me. How something entitled “Topography of Terror” where terror is so tangible could possibly make its way to the top of my list is all a bit morbid, but the amount of history and information pouring out of this place in an organized fashion is truly mind-blowing and educational.

Book Burning Memorial – I’d go ahead and assume that many people pass right by this memorial not having a clue what it all means. That, or you come upon a big crowd standing around a glass plate in the ground. The public square of Bebelplatz holds a sunken library with empty white shelves to signify the 20,000 books that went up in flames here on 10 May, 1933 at the hands of the Nazis.

Museum Island (Museumsinsel)- 1 island, 5 museums. Enough said

Brandenburg Gate – 18th century monument in the western part of the city and historically a site for major events

Reichstag – With a war-torn past and many restorations later, this stunning building now serves as the German Parliament building

Checkpoint Charlie – Also known as Checkpoint C, this was the best known Berlin Wall crossing point between east and west Berlin. Lots of people are here taking photos of the checkpoint, but if you don’t know what it is exactly, you’ll likely walk right through!

Berlin Fernsehturm – TV tower in the center of Mitte in Berlin allowing spectators to get a 360-view of the entire city

Gendarmenmarkt – A beautiful square in Berlin with rotating markets and concerts showcasing an architectural ensemble with German and French influences

Eastside Gallery – Serving as a massive piece of history, this 4,318 ft. section of the Berlin Wall painted with murals acts as an open-air art gallery

Potsdamer Platz – Modern-day entertainment, shopping and business district with a loaded past as the Berlin Wall went through this area. Easily reached via U-Bahn.

Berlin Cathedral – A main landmark of Berlin, you can’t mistake this stunning dome for anything else! After the division of Germany, the Cathedral was in East Berlin. After many damages in WWII, the full restoration was only completed in 1993, four years after the Berlin Wall fell.

Tiergarten – Berlin’s most popular park coming in at 520 acres. Great spot for a run, some shade or a little peace and quiet.

Mauerpark – If you like flea markets, karaoke and lounging in the park with your friends – look no further. Sundays here are lots of fun, especially if you’re brave enough to belt it out while singing karaoke in front of a few hundred people

Badeschiff – Floating public swimming pool in the Spree River with a bar and views for days. Be prepared for an entry fee and mediocre service.

Ritz-Carlton Berlin – A grand marble staircase greeted us as we checked into the property. It’s hard to take your eyes off of it and pairs swimmingly with the recent remodel and art deco theme running throughout. Situated in Potsdamer Platz with a backyard of the Tiergarten, I hiiiighly recommend this gem!

Your correspondent is a member of a book club, where the intention is to read a set book each month and then to attend a meeting to discuss said book. He’s become a little disenchanted and didn’t even attempt to read the book for May because it held no interest whatsoever.

The book for June was a different matter. Your correspondent was so engrossed that in two sessions in one day, he read the whole book. This is, to say the least, extremely unusual for him.

As you might gather, the fact that I read it in one day suggests that it was a riveting, un-putdownable read. That is correct, but not quite for the reasons you might think.

The book is about Lale Sokolov, a Jew, who enters Auschwitz in 1942 as a forced labourer in the Birkenau slave labour camp. He manages to find a job tattooing the newly arrived inmates with their identification number. He manages to survive the camp and in the process he meets and falls in love with his future wife.

The subject matter is therefore quite grim - or SHOULD be. It actually isn’t grim at all, and reviews on Amazon have described it as “Auschwitz soft porn”. Your correspondent agrees with this synopsis, and feels that in some ways it can be seen as an insult to those who lost their lives, and their descendants.

The book has won numerous awards and accolades and is stated as being a biography. It is in fact a work of fiction, because with the greatest of respect to him, some of the events simply couldn’t have happened, and others are so far beyond belief that they insult the intelligence of even the most dim witted of readers. The author, Heather Morris, obviously did no research of any kind, and simply took the story given to her by Sokolov as gospel truth and did not challenge any of it. I would have liked the book a great deal more if the author had started it with words along the following lines: “this is a work of fiction, a novel, based on Lale Sokolov’s experiences in Auschwitz. I have not made anything up, but pass the stories on as Lale told them to me. The reader must bear in mind that Lale was in his mid-eighties when he met me, and that his memory might not have been as accurate as he thought”.

As far as the stories go: they are gruesome, harrowing, appalling, but ultimately most are highly unlikely or even downright impossible. I could write all night on this subject, but just a few to be getting on with:

Shortly after meeting his girlfriend/future wife, in 1942, she suffers typhoid. Typhoid kills hundreds of thousands of people in the concentration camps before the gas chambers were even thought of. There is no cure for it in 1942. This doesn’t daunt Lale though. He has a contact with a Polish labourer who is helping construct the camp. The labourer takes pity on Lale and brings him scraps of food, chocolates etc - in itself, highly unlikely. Lale chances his arm and asks if he can bring him some penicillin to cure his girlfriend’s typhoid. No problem. Within a day or two, the penicillin arrives, and days later the girlfriend has completely recovered. PROBLEM - I remember from years and years ago, on Blue Peter: penicillin was the allies’ most important secret weapon in the war. The Americans had managed to manufacture just enough to ensure that their troops on D Day in 1944 could be treated if needed. I did some research on Wikipedia. Sure enough, in the whole of 1943, enough penicillin was produced in the whole of America to treat ONE patient!!! Yet here in the middle of Poland in 1942, a country under Nazi occupation, a Polish labourer saunters to his pharmacist in the middle of a forest and procures a whole bottle of penicillin tablets without even needing a prescription!!!!

At that point I felt like throwing the book down and stamping on it. How ridiculous could you get?? A child of five could have spotted the errors.

Much more was to come. Lale manages to procure nylon stockings from the same labourer - not withstanding the fact that women in England in 1945 could only get nylon stockings if they were sleeping with an American service man. The supposed story that he got the stockings at the request of an SS guard who had befriended him just made me incredulous.

The worst, I think was the football match that the SS guards asked him to arrange between their team and a team of inmates. It is not possible to disprove this, but - REALLY??? The SS were psychopathic murderers, conditioned to killing Jews by the thousands, without any compunction or the merest thought of mercy. Even if any of the inmates were strong enough to run around playing football (which I seriously doubt) I just cannot believe that the SS would ever, ever think of playing them at football.

I could go on and on.....and on - but I think I have amply made my point.

Following on from the blatantly highly improbable stories, is the fact that he makes light of the whole Auschwitz experience. He barely mentions the seriously evil stuff that happens there - the mass murder on an industrial scale - and if he does touch on it, it is in a throw away, casual manner. I have to say that I have serious doubts that he was even Jewish - I think he says so in order to avoid being accused of being a collaborator.

This book is an excellent read. It is in an entertaining love story set in the grim surroundings of Auschwitz. It is indeed a tale of “hope”: that goodness can eventually come out of even the worst events. It is though, full of the most utter, utter rubbish imaginable. I think it is permissible to write a novel about any subject, even the Holocaust - but it should be written with a great deal more feeling and compassion for what happened there, and with a much more stringent approach to the facts.

What’s your studio/work environment like?

The work environment is clean and minimal. Our creative team just moved up from the warehouse/office from downstairs where our shop is located. We’re now on the 8th floor with a bird’s eye view of downtown.

How is your space organized/arranged?

It’s an open environment with desks and computers. Everyone is very busy with their own responsibilities but we gather around and make important decisions together about what to produce and launch. Our creative office is made up of 2 designers, a photographer, 2 buyers, wholesale coordinator, and myself. We’re all creative and have a keen sense of color and design. So we look at the products we make and carry from a creative eye while considering retailers and consumer perspectives.

How long have you been in this space? Where did you work before that?

We never really had a real office since we opened our shop. Since the shop was a big enough place for both the retail and office, we always worked behind the shop. As a small business, it’s always important for us to be cautious. But as the shop became busier and space becoming smaller and smaller, we needed to make a move and transition into a quieter and more focused place. Since the move, we’ve also become more productive with fewer distractions.

If you could change something about your workspace, what would it be?

The air conditioning is way too cold! Would also love all white desks, but I’m not complaining.

Is there an office pet?

Yes! Our Shihtzu, Scooter comes by once in a while when we let him.

Do you require music in the background? If so, who are some favorites?

Actually, I work much better in a really quiet setting without music.

How do you record ideas?

Email memo, jot things down on many notebooks & planners (I switch mine all the time. Too many of our own to choose from.), screenshot on my phone, Google calendar, and all of the above.

Do you have an inspiration board? What’s on it right now?

Pinterest board with all past and future colors, collections, product ideas, and more.

What is your typical work style?

I usually come in between 10-11am and go home between 7-7:30pm. I like to exercise in the morning to get my brain and body moving and I try to keep my real work at the office but of course ideas and inspiration strikes and hits anytime so I try and grab those and bring to the office.

What is your creative process and/or creative workflow like? Does it change every project or do you keep it the same?

I try to work at least 6 months out so we’re designing our SS 2020 right now. I’m reworking our 4 color ways to make them a little brighter. Our core products will follow the theme and the color scheme but there are always new, extra items that we make and launch. Once the new things become proven, we fold them into our regular program. The SS 2020 would be a theme of the Sea because we all hope that a major sea of change in our society and politics should and will happen!

What kind of art/design/objects might you have scattered about the space?

Samples are hidden away in our cabinet, everyone has their favorite tool and mementos, jackets, snacks, our notepads, pens, notebooks, and planners.

Are there tools and/or machinery in your space?

Our photo studio is downstairs, so all photography, lighting gear along with paints, rolls of seamless in different colors, and lots and lots of props are all down there. Upstairs in the creative office is minimal with rulers, scissors, office supplies with a printer and each of our own computers and that’s about it. We all keep our digital inspiration boards.

What tool(s) do you most enjoy using in the design process?

Scrap paper, Pantone color book, scissors, and rulers sometimes, and Photoshop for speedy mockup colors and designs.

Let’s talk about how you’re wired. Tell us about your tech arsenal/devices.

I try not to buy into the latest hyped gear. I use an outdated tiny phone (iPhone SE), and an 8-year-old iMac that’s still really zippy and fast. I turn all notifications off and will never buy into an Apple watch. That seems like a nightmare to me.

What design software do you use, if any, and for what?

Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.

What’s on your desk right now?

Pantone color books, product samples, scraps of leather swatches, notepads, notebooks, tea, water, and other things.

Is there a favorite project/piece you’ve worked on?

I love doing something completely different than what I’m used to. This year, we launched 2 new categories, bamboo tabletop and a line of socks. It’s challenging to have to find the right manufacturers for all the new things but being able to work on whole new things is exciting and fun, especially when your customers are loving them.

We also worked with some like-minded companies to launch a line of water bottles with Corkcicle and bike helmets with Thousand, a watch with Breda, and a complete set of yoga wear with Athleisure brand, Beyond Yoga. More licensed products in the works for next year.

Bauhaus collection

We just launched our fall/winter collection based on Bauhaus for its 100th anniversary. The color schemes are all primary of red, yellow, blue, and black, and the designs contained a lot of sharp geometric shapes and lines.

Tell us about a current project you’re working on. What was the inspiration behind it?

I always try to find something that we can offer that will work well within our current categories. Much of what I come up with is usually influenced by what I feel like I need as well as what my team is needing to keep them creative. Making new stuff is really fun and exciting but it can also be a lot of pressure so it’s always important to take creative breaks and try to be centered in the midst of all the deadlines.

For example, we are launching 2 new journals for wellness and creativity, called Self Journal and Creativity Journal with all of our own content. Fun activities to get your creativity flowing, inspiring quotes, and daily journaling are included.

I think that Poketo is a breathing living organism. I like that there is constant newness happening within and around Poketo. I think the reason we’ve survived and thrived for 16 years is that I get easily bored by the same thing so I try to find new ways to expand the ethos of Poketo, case in point is our workshop program, that’s been popular from day one until now. We create new products, have opened up new shops.

Do you have anything in your home that you’ve designed/created?

Ceramic espresso cups, planters, saucers, and a wall hanging. All made at one of the Poketo workshops.
