The AG team’s ‘Desert Island’ lockdown reads
In the first of an occasional series, members of the AG team talk about the books they love and are currently reading
What are you reading to while away the hours? Here is what some of the AG team are reading
When we are not producing excellent magazines and doing some gardening, the AG staff can think of nothing better than settling down with a good book, listening to music or watching television to take our minds off the world outside.
And you’ll be pleased to know that we don’t just read gardening books! This blog post is the first of a series of ‘Desert Island Lockdown favourites’ – reading material, music, television, films, food, flower, artwork and locations are just some of the topics we will be covering over the coming weeks.
We are kicking things off with books, either our favourite reads or what we are reading at the moment.  We hope you enjoy our choices and would love to hear yours too. Contact us at [email protected]
The Third Policeman by Flann O’Brien – a comedy, a tragedy and kaleidoscope of beautifully-written nonsense
The Third policeman by Flann O’Brien
This is the story of a murder, actually two murders, but you don’t know about the second until the end of the book. It is not a murder mystery because the first murder isn’t a mystery and the second comes too late to be a mystery.
This is a comedy, a tragedy, and kaleidoscope of beautifully-written nonsense worthy of Lewis Carroll, Joyce and Kafka combined. Set on a farm in Ireland, our hero is a one-legged (the other is wooden) student of the obscure philosopher De Selby. On the death of his parents he inherits the family farm, which includes a pub and it’s manager John Divney. Our hero spends all his time in the study of De Selby, leaving Divney to run the business.
amateurgardening.com/blog
Just as he has finished his definitive critique of De Selby’s work, he discovers Diveny has squandered away the family business and they are broke. Desperate to find the money to publish his book, our hero and Diveny hatch a plan to rob an old miser called Mathers who lives on a remote farm with a stack of money hidden under the floorboards in a black box. A plan is executed and then the story gets seriously surreal.
There are times when reality is stranger than fiction. The Third Policemen is now regarded as a modern classic and O’Brien’s greatest work. Indeed it is believed by many to be one of the great works of literature and O’Brien to be a superior writer to his friend and fellow countryman James Joyce. However, just like the hero of the story, O’Brien was unable to get the book published in his lifetime.
He tried throughout 1939-40, but was constantly rejected. He told friends that the manuscript had been lost, but unbeknown to everyone it sat on top of the sideboard in his dinning room where he ate lunch every day. And there it stayed until his death in 1966 when it was discovered and finally published in 1967 to great and continuing acclaim.
This book is too beautifully written, funny and insanely intelligent for me to adequately describe. However, I would recommend you read it with an Irish accent.

The Cazalet Chronicles by Elizabeth Jane Howard – a rich and evocative look at the messy, complicated, often mundane business of life
The Cazalet Chronicles by Elizabeth Jane Howard
I’m a complete magpie when it comes to reading matter, picking up and stashing anything that catches my eye. As a result our bookshelves are lined with everything from Star Wars film manuals to medieval history, thrillers, horror, science fiction, historical fiction, gardening books (obviously!) and comfort reading,
Most of the books that come into the ‘comfort’ category are well-thumbed and dog-earred because I turn to them time and again, like old friends, in times of need.
Right now I’m craving Elizabeth Jane Howard’s Cazalet Chronicles, five wonderful books detailing the lives of the middle class Cazalet family from the summer before the Second World War to the mid-1950s.
amateurgardening.com/blog
At its centre are the clan’s imperious patriarch and matriarch The Brig and Duchy, their sons Hugh, Edward and Rupert, daughter Rachel, and their spouses, lovers, friends and staff. From the second generation come their many children and this is where Howard succeeds best, I think. The way the younger characters observe the world and make their way through it is often hilarious, sometimes poignant and occasionally heartbreaking .
The Chronicles weave a rich and evocative thread through the messy, complicated, often mundane business of life, love, betrayal, loss, wartime and the pain of wrong love and fractured friendships. If this makes them sound like typically soft and cloying rom-com/Aga saga reading don’t worry, the stories often have a hard edge that cuts through any saccharine nonsense.
From the opening page of the first novel The Light Years, the Cazalets become your family, your friends, and finishing the final page of the last book, All Change, will leave you bereft and wanting more.
I’m currently reading the incomparable Wilding by Isabella Tree, a wonderful memoir of how the author and her husband returned the barren land around their family estate back to a thriving, nature-rich ecosystem.
Another recommendation is All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Duerr, a beautiful, mystic wartime tale of a blind French girl and the German orphan boy who enters her world.

The Kraken Wakes by John Wyndham – how mankind responds to the threat of its own extinction
The Kraken Wakes By John Wyndham
I’m not a fan of science fiction, but while watching an episode of Coronation Street last year – I’m a great fan of Coronation Street and EastEnders – I heard someone mention The Midwich Cuckoos. I’m sure it was the character played by Maureen Lipman, but that’s by the by.
Anyway, I looked it up and discovered that it was a book by John Wyndham. I’d heard of the author, as he wrote The Day of the Triffids, so I thought I’d see what it was about. So I bought it, read it – and loved it.
amateurgardening.com/blog
I then found out that Wyndham had written The Kraken Wakes, so I bought that. The book is an apocalyptic science fiction novel first published in 1953.
It’s about how mankind responds to the threat of its own extinction and what it does in order to survive. It starts with fireballs appearing out of the sky and landing in the oceans, ships subsequently disappearing and the discovery of aliens that have landed via these fireballs and set up home underwater. Sea levels rise as the aliens melt the polar ice caps resulting in social collapse.
Who’d have though Coronation Street would lead me to the work of a renowned science-fiction writer – and I’d be reading about the terrifying consequences of a threat to the world at this time…

Life Moves Pretty Fast by Hadley Freeman – a celebration of a halcyon age filled with cinematic gems
Life Moves Pretty Fast by Hadley Freeman
We can all learn a lot from the movies of our youth: that’s the message of this fantastically constructed book, a quintessential love letter to a time that some might say taste forgot. The Eighties gets a lot of flack, but what Guardian writer Freeman sets out here is a manifesto for positive living predicated on a ‘golden age of cinema’ for dorks and dreamers.
It’s a celebration of a halcyon age filled with cinematic gems wherein impressionable kids could learn vital lessons about universal themes: friendship, integrity, equality and individuality. Embracing a wealth of cult and mainstream classics, this is a witty, well-researched series of essays that reflect on how key movie creations with spirited heroes and anti-heroes, from engaging everyman Ferris Bueller to the anarchic Ghostbusters, have shaped our psyches.
amateurgardening.com/blog
There are stellar nuggets of movie gossip here as well, like the friction caused by the revised ending of Pretty in Pink, and how Denholm Elliot took on the role of lovable butler Coleman in Trading Places because original choice Ronnie Barker never wanted to work more than 25 miles from home.
Freeman explores the impact of a ridiculous rollcall of comedic and dramatic talent, all with a lightness of touch and conversational gusto that feels like hanging out with a chum who just happens to be a movie buff. With gorgeous insights from the likes of John Landis, Geena Davis, Tom Hanks and Molly Ringwald, this is truly instructive reading for modern times.
It’s also a lovely reminder of the power of nostalgia – to say nothing of the humour and heart that can get us through crazy days like these, and give us fresh perspectives on ourselves and our lockdown buddies. In the words of time-hopping metalhead slackers Bill and Ted: ‘Be excellent to each other’.

The Power of Suggestion & Family Ties
New Post has been published on http://www.karanschmidt.com/2019/04/17/the-power-of-suggestion-family-ties/
The Power of Suggestion & Family Ties
The Power of Suggestion & Family Ties
The Narcopath Mocks Your Family Ties
The power of suggestion and triangulation are two of the most powerful tools in the narcopath's bag of tricks, and never underestimate her profitability in their use.
Many narcopaths mock the family of their partners. The narcopath and the malignant narcissist sees your family, other people important in your life, in the same way she sees everyone: as tools, toys, or obstacles. She will use or treat the people in your life in much the same way as she worries you, and make no mistake, if they resist her control, she will remove them from your life.
She will cause you unfair when you have plans with your family. By her negative and sarcastic remarks to time you spend with your family, she is putting the suggestion in your mind that your family is not good for your relationship. She can not hide the idea that your attention would go to someone else. It does not matter that if you are spending time with your kids. She will constantly interrupt and interfere with any quality time where she is the center of your attention. It does not matter that you have not seen your parents in a long time. It does not matter who has died or who is dying. It is not about them.
Understand this clearly, the narcopath does not see people in the same way the rest of us do. To her people are simply part of the environment. Some are resources; some are in the way; some are just there. The only real thing the narcissist wants from people is their admiration. Your family should fall down at her feet and worship. If they do not worship her, then they are competition for your worship of her. She may actively seek to stop you from gathering with them. She may be cruel or obnoxious so they will stay away. If she can not control them, she will stop at nothing to remove them from your life. She will fabricate events where she is the victim of some cruelty of one of your family members to keep your attention on her. In this triangulation, she is the victim (a favorite role), your family member is the villain, and you are her protector.
She hates being reminded that there are people who know some of her secrets and failures. She hates the assumption of relationship and rights that family has. She hates the fact that some people refuse to be twisted by her manipulations. She holds your family in protest and demands that you do the same. She ridicules and makes fun of your family in order to remind you that she is superior to your family. She convinces you that you are better off without them. She mocks the love and loyalty of your family. She never misses an opportunity to remind you of their failures. She constantly fabricates scenarios where she claims she was insulted, disrespected, ignored, used, or treated poorly by your family to cause distance and hard feelings where there once was none. She will use her own children in her endeavors to prove to you that your family is not the people you believe them to be. How does she accomplish this?
Power of Suggestion
Have you ever had someone say, "You do not look well" or "You look tired," and then ask, "How are you feeling?" If so, you probably said, "No, I'm fine" and then secretly looked in a mirror to see if your face really did look sick or tired. Then, a few minutes later, you started thinking … "Man, I do feel a little tired."
This is the power of suggestion, and it is one of the most powerful psychological psychological tools known to man and should never ever be underestimated. The narcissist uses the power of suggestion to plant the thought in your mind that your family is bad; that your family mistreats you; that your family does not care about; that your family does not want you to be happy; that your family is trying to come between the two of you & that your family only wants to control you. She plants the thought in your mind again and again until you actually believe sever ties with your family is your own idea.
The emotional and mental abuse that a narcissist inflicts on her victim is based on the minority power of suggestion which leaves one believing an idea or thought is his own. To make the power of suggestion work, the narcopath must convince you from the beginning that she is your soul mate. To accomplish this mission, she makes sure in the very beginning of your relationship she creates a false self which is built up from a collection of simple and minor pathological lies – lies which make her seem angelic and builds her a reputation of being 'as good as gold 'resulting in the belief that' she would never do anything to hurt anyone '. And she will fabricate entire conversations to rein in in your mind that she is perfect. As an example, she tells you that she heard a rumor of someone they know cheating on their partner they may then make statements such as "how could they do that to him / her? That's disgusting" making out that they are wholly disagree with such behavior.
However, this is often only to fool you into believing that they would never be capable of doing such a thing themselves yet in reality the lie is usually a cover to hide the fact that the narcissist is doing, or plans to do, exactly that – they seek to appease. These minority lies go on and on, building up over time, gradually pulling the wool over your eyes, leaving you blind to the narcopaths true hidden self.
All she needs do is constantly drop hints to control you through the mere power of suggestion and – BOOM – you are thinking or doing exactly what this manipulator wants. You may as well be a hand or foot of hers. It will not happen this quickly. Most people reject any suggestion that their family is bad, but the power of suggestion that your mother is not who you think she is without telling you this directly will actually impact your belief system. These are reinforced with lies about things your mother did that hurt her feelings. She begs you not to say anything because she does not want to cause problems, so you file it away. Every time you have a disagreement, or you catch her in a lie, or you do not treat her right, your mother's name is somehow brought into it, slowly building up resentment in your mind. This process repeats itself over and over again until you hate your own mother.
Still not convinced? Ever had someone tell you that dental or medical procedure "will really hurt," that a test "was really hard," or that a new boss "is impossible to deal with" -and then had those scenarios play out just as predicted? Turns out, those early suggestions probably shaped your reality.
A deliberate suggestion can influence how well people remember things, how they respond to medical treatments, and even how well they will perform and have, according to research by Maryanne Garry, Robert Michael, and Irving Kirsch. The reason, they say, is attributable to something called response expectancies. This means that the way we expect our response to a situation impacts how we will actually respond. In other words, once you expect something to happen, your behaviors, thoughts, and reactions will actually contribute to making that expectation occur.
If you expect something to happen-if someone or something suggests to you a specific exit-your expectations of that opportunity play a major role in its occurrence. The expectation or suggestion alone, often unconsciously, changes your behavior and your responses to help bring into reality the income you are expecting. The power of suggestion is a guilty trap, an 'I told you so' just waiting to happen.
The problem is of course intent . If a suggestion is made that something terrible will happen, to you or something you care about, your subconscious mind subtly assigns a despair emotion before you file it away. You forget about it because it has no rational context, so it never comes up. But then later when the terrible thing happens your conscious mind reactivates the other orphaned memory. Without knowing why, you feel you should know. ' Suddenly you feel regret and guilt about a terrible thing you had no way to rationally foresee and were not a party to.
Why is this important? The despair diminishes or even blocks the 'will to action' primary emotion. You will be paralyzed with guilt, and off-balance. This is when your toxic partner reaffirms the belief with a look, or a comment like, "I told you so".
Malignant narcissists & narcaths are masters at manipulating people through their emotions, beliefs, attitudes and perceptions, and unfortunately, most people are trusting by nature and are easily duped into buying into their crap. All those memories you shared with her in the beginning of your relationship are used in sub ways until you start to believe them. For example, you told her about the time your mother was supposed to bring snacks to your class and how she forgot, and how embarrassed that made you feel, and you added that the next day she came in with all sorts of trips and how the teacher let y'all have a little party, and how awesome your mother is. This information is filed away, and a few months down the road, she tells you a story about something that happened at her daughter's school, and the story is eerily similar to the one you told her. She tells you how horrible that mother was to do whatever it was she did, and she can not imagine EVER doing anything like that, and then she starts talking about what's for dinner. What has she done here? She's implanted in your mind that the mother you love and would do anything for really is bad.
The power of suggestion is the use of small statements that at the time seem harmless. For example, you are all visiting your parents, and she is not the center of attention, she may text you, "gotta feel the love in this house, right?" You're not exactly sure what she's talking about, but you reply, "yea". These are not big huge pronouncements. They are little sarcasms, little jabs that you do not really focus on, but said repeatedly, they become a part of your subconscious memory. She criticizing your family and friends while telling you she's not like that, until one day, you believe she is the only one of value that you can count on. For the power of suggestion to work, it must be subtracted and repeated, until YOU believe it, and believe that this is YOUR belief. The power of suggestion is an insidious form of abuse because the abuser just stands back and proclaims that she had nothing to do with the problems between him and his family. Your toxic partner will recruit others to help her destroy your family. She will do this same thing with anyone she feels is a threat to her control over you, and you will never suspect her of intentionally destroying your relationship with your family.
The Power of Suggestion & Psychological Warfare
Your expectations affect your behavior. Suggestions affect your expectations. These suggestions can be deliberate or non-deliberate. If you are in a relationship with a toxic person these suggestions will always be planned and deferred to influence your actions in a way that benefits them, not you. Losing the support of your family and close friends is a perfect example.
The only way to protect yourself against these psychological strategies is to develop strategies of your own. Make early observations. When anyone makes a suggestion that triggers a memory or response in your mind, ask questions. Observations and questions control your focus, which control your expectations, which control your beliefs and behaviors. You may not overturn the beliefs in other people's heads, but it will make sure that the negative beliefs your toxic partner is trying to get you to believe will never take root in your mind.
Examine their past – Do not be afraid to ask tough questions about their past, not only of them but previous friends. It does not need to be a job interview. Ask to see photo albums. Ask about old cars. Previous houses, towns. Narcopaths love to brag so make it about how great their things and rewards were. This takes some time but this should yield research-able leads about their entire life.
Observe their behavior when in public and in public. Watch how they interact with co-workers. Narcopaths compete but never cooperate. It's always a battle for power even if the battle is an inch at a time.
Listen to what they say to others and about others. Do they get offended over nothing. Do they seem to be a person who can "dish it out, but not take it"? Listen to how they describe people. Do they classify people by their day to day choices and decisions or by what they do and who they answer to.
Does he / she play mind games with their children or others? They love the power of suggestion. They will tell a target they are going to do something evil to them. Then they will distract them or say it was a mistake or joke. Later it turns out it was quite intentional when the evil thing actually happens. But now the target also feels responsible, and is less likely to retaliate.
If you do not believe this could happen to you, think again. Family, friends, possessions, finances, identification, thoughts and emotions are all historically stolen from you, leaving you in a position with no resources and no-one to turn to for help. You will not realize it until it's too late.

Car accident question and if I need to report to insurance company?
Ok so here's the scene, I'm backing out of my driveway from my garage. My friend parked his car at the end of driveway (he was leaving but parked there to answer a phone call). My driveway is a downhill so when I backed I couldn't see his car there. Anyway, I backed into his car and caused a minor scatch. Unfortunately, his car is a new BMW and he needs to fix it. The police came and said it is under $1000 fix and it is up to us if we report to our insurance company or not. So now I am waiting him to get a estimate to fix. What do I need to do? I guess it is my full responsibility since I am moving and he is still. If the fix fee is under $1000, do I need to report to my insurance company? How much does the insurance usually increase due to this kind accident? thanks

Can someone explain the difference between Health Insurance and any other Insurance?
I don't understand why people act like health insurance is so radically differently than other insurance. Is it? Insurance is a form of risk management to hedge against loss. Auto, Life, Homeowners, Unemployment and Health are among the types of insurance you can buy. I'm generally not required to buy any of those insurances. If I have the title to my home, I'm not required to have homeowners insurance. If I don't drive a car, I'm not required to carry auto insurance. Why should I be forced to buy health insurance? If I want to take that or any gamble by not buying insurance, isn't that my choice? I will admit that by not purchasing health insurance, I could be putting a burden on others if I was admitted to the ER and couldn't pay, that burden of payment would fall on others. HOWEVER, that burden would be there whether I was forced to carry insurance or not. If I don't make enough money to buy this mandatory insurance, then the gov't will give me tax credits to purchase insurance. Who's paying for those tax credits? All of the tax payers. So either we pay the providers/insurance companies via higher premiums to cover loss, or we pay the gov't via taxes. Forcing (perhaps unconstitutionally) citizens to purchase health insurance won't solve anything, it will just move where the cost is incurred. But please, explain why people are treating health insurance so differently.""

Car insurance/traffic ticket question?
I got a ticket for speeding (67 in a 50) a little over 8 months ago. I took it to court because it was a first offense and got the points down from 2 to 1. I never got anything from my insurance company, so I thought I got lucky and my rates would stay the same. About three weeks ago, we had a bad wind storm in Maryland and a tree limb fell on my jeep. I reported it the same day and the insurance is fixing. Yesterday I got a letter in the mail from my insurance saying my rates were going up from the ticket in March. Do you think that my report of the tree limb triggered them to look at my driving record and raise the rate or is it just a coincidence that this happened at the same time?""
Will my insurance go up if I file a claim but then not need it?
A guy ran into me. All he did was pull off a side mirror. I can't get his insurance to replace it directly. They said he has to file the claim. He has yet to do so and the contact number I have for him is bad. So I was told if I go through my insurance they can file the claim to his insurance for me to get it paid. But if somehow they can't file it through his insurance ill just pay out of pocket and have my husband do the work so it's cheap. But if I do that will my insurance still go up? The accidentwas entirely his fault.

Car insurance question?
I have a 2000 Landrover, and right now I'm on my moms insurance policy and the car is in her name. I think its stupid that I have to pay insurance when the car isnt even in my name, but everytime I ask her to put it in my name she gives me some bull about it being like $200 to transfer titles and that it if its in my name ill have to get off her insurance. Is any of that true? And if so, how much does it cost to get your own policy? My insurance is 160 right now if that makes any difference. It's kinda high because I had a wreck about a year ago.""
Insurance Costs on a 3000GT SL?
I'm 18 and am getting my own car for college. I've been driving my dad's VW Jetta III without a license (he drives with me) for about two years now, as he is a frequent commuter and my high school is close to his work. We never bothered to get a license because we'd have to insure me (and I was going to drive with him anyway as a 'learner'). My eye is on my neighbor's 1994 3000GT SL. It's a non-turbo, and in good mechanical condition. But since I technically just started driving with a license (even though I've commuted for two years now), I'm afraid I might get charged by the insurance company like a 16 year old. It's because of this I didn't get the twin-turbo VR-4, as I heard insurance costs more than the car after a couple years. How much can an 18 year old college going kid like me expect to pay with the SL model?""

To get maturnity insurance or not?
I am currently 29 years old and just recently married. I have come to a decision I have to make on my health insurance. I am not planning on getting pregnant for at least the next 2 years. So do I or do I not take the maturnity insurance. It would be a differance of 140.00 a month! Crazy since I am on the pill trying not to get pregnant. But it is still possible to get pregnant on the pill, but highly unlikely. So my question is do I take it to be on the safe side or waive it until it gets closer to that time. Money is tight and I hate to sink money into something I will hopefully not need. Any views on the situation would be much appreciated. Thnx.""

How much will my car insurance be as a new driver?
I'm learning to drive as a necessity for a new job, but I am struggling to get a reliable estimate of the insurance premium I should expect once I have a car. I know that nobody will be able to give me a precise figure as it depends on so many variables, but I wondered if anyone would know what to put into a quote generator to get something accurate? I'm female, in the UK, 27 years old and will need a cheap and cheerful 5 door hatchback. Unfortunately I don't know enough about engine sizes and that sort of thing to know if I'm answering the questions on the form realistically. I tried compare the market and got a cheapest quote of 3,700 per annum - does this sound right? I know it will be expensive but even so that seems very high for a 1999 Vauxhall Corsa! (the car I used to get the quote). I do realise this is a very subjective question but any advice is greatly appreciated - at the moment it is looking like I won't be able to take up a dream job offer as all I will be doing is working to pay for a car that I oly got in order to take the job :(""

Is getting a motorcycle in college a smart idea?
Im going to be attending UCI in the fall and right now I have a 2000 eclipse. I was looking at parking permits online and I noticed that car permits are 3x more expensive than motorcycle permits. The only thing is that i barely got my license 4 months ago so i know that i will pay alot for insurance but will it be more than my eclipse? (since I have the GT version i already pay allot). Did you see the left/right coalition letter against the health insurance mandate?
March 19, 2010 Dear Member of Congress: On behalf of our organizations and the millions of people we represent, we strongly encourage you to oppose the individual mandate in the Patient Protection and Affordable Health Care Act of 2009. Our groups and members may disagree on what are the best solutions to our health care problems, but this unprecedented coalition of organizations from across the political spectrum agrees that forcing individuals to buy insurance from private companies under the threat of fines or jail is not the reform we need. The individual mandate is a section of the bill that requires every single American to buy health insurance-whether or not they want it or feel they can afford it-or break the law and face penalties and fines. Consequently, the bill does not actually cover 30 million more Americans-instead it makes them criminals if they do not buy insurance from private companies. We hope you agree that it is unconscionable to force people to buy a product from a private insurer. This would effectively be a tax-and a huge one-paid directly to a private industry. Enacting this mandate would be a major victory for the insurance companies at the expense of the American people. It should be no surprise they support the government forcing everyone to buy their product. Imagine how the hamburger industry would respond if the government forced everyone to have hamburgers for lunch or pay fines? According to the President's Council of Economic Advisers, the average annual premium for single coverage is $4,321. If the 46 million uninsured are forced to purchase private health insurance at that price, then the insurance industry stands to bring in up to $200 billion in new insurance premiums per year. The Senate bill also includes an estimated $630 billion in corporate welfare for private insurance companies in the form of subsidies over the next 10 years, creating even less incentive than currently exists for private insurance premiums to be lowered. To make matters worse, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services estimates that 19 million Americans would not buy insurance and as a result would be forced to pay $29 billion in taxes/fines. The Joint Committee on Taxation has made it clear that failure to pay these fines could result in jail time. Thirty-six states have passed or are considering measures that would allow their residents to opt out, including Virginia, Utah, Pennsylvania, Florida, Minnesota, Michigan, Georgia and Ohio. Given these fact, it is not surprising that a recent NBC News poll finds 57 percent of Americans do not want the government to create a law that requires everyone to have health insurance coverage and that only 38% of Americans favor the mandate, making it the least popular part of the bill. The American people stand in firm opposition to the individual mandate. We stand with them. We hope you will, too. This is in exposition of some of  what went on within the immediate past government of PDP.  An expose on some of what the present administration of president Muhammadu Buhari has had to contend with and which in many ways has affected the buoyancy of our economy especially in the face of dwindling resources.
Many Nigerians, including yours sincerely, have been suffering from the malaise of political apathy for quite sometimes. We seem to be uninterested in what public officers do, provided we are comfortable in our respective businesses or vocations. We “hear nothing, see nothing, take no part in political life” and rarely call public officers to account. Instead, we merely criticize or complain about public affairs or governance generally. We excuse and comfort ourselves with the statement that we do not want to get involved in dirty party politics. The result of this state of affairs is that our country is gradually sliding into anarchy under our very eyes, no thanks to the inappropriate actions and inactions of people we trusted with public offices.
A friend recently shared with me a beautiful quote on this subject, credited to the famous American Catholic Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, who said, “The refusal to take sides on great moral issues is itself a decision. It is a silent acquiescence to evil. The tragedy of our time is that those who still believe in honesty lack fire and conviction, while those who believe in dishonesty are full of passionate conviction”.
This statement not only describes the tragic reality of our society today but also presented a superior argument on the moral questions many of us were battling with regarding very many disturbing information which, continually come to our knowledge on how some public officials converted their offices into private enterprise. Rather than call these types of public servants (or should we say ‘private servants’) to account, conventional Nigerian wisdom requires one to keep mute on such “sensitive” information, which, as the saying goes, may ‘put sand in someone else’s ‘garri’. But after reading Archbishop Fulton”s statement, I decided to write this piece in order to purge myself of this ‘silent acquiescence’ to evil.
After listening to the recent revelations and fireworks between the Hon. Minister of Finance and the suspended Boss of the Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC) at the House of Representatives Public Hearing on the issues leading to the suspension of the SEC boss, I became convinced that our public service was truly sick and in dire need of a surgical operation. I recalled the many stories one gets to hear in the clubs and social conversations about the atrocities being perpetrated by ‘private servants’ disguised as public servants in public offices. I recalled one of those occasions we were engaged in a heated argument on an issue that was trending at that time about the legality and proprietary of the Federal Government’s sacking of Mrs. Chinelo Amazu as Pencom Director-General. One of the proponents of her sack made a wild allegation about her activities during her stint as Pencom Boss, which I vehemently opposed and dismissed as the mere imagination of a foe. Determined to know the truth, I ventured on personal verification. My findings left me bewildered!
It’s public knowledge that Aso Savings & Loans has been in crises for sometimes now. It is also public knowledge that very many Federal Government institutions have their monies trapped in Aso Savings. What was news for me was the peculiar transaction of the Pencom case. I tried to investigate from both Aso Savings and Pencom. The officers at Aso Savings were more forthcoming with information probably because they were under serious pressure from different quarters to cough out public funds taken from many government institutions for which they were, at several points, invited at the Presidential Villa on this issue. The Pencom story was that the mother of the ex Pencom Boss owns a Primary Mortgage Institution, the MGSL Mortgage Bank located at AP Plaza, Adetokunbo Ademola Crescent, Wuse II, Abuja, involved in real estate business. However, the company had been in trouble for some time and required injection of substantial working capital. The daughter had to come to the rescue of the family business with Pencom money.
The ex-Pencom Boss “arranged” a bailout for her mother’s PMI through a term deposit of over one billion nairas in Aso Savings at a very low-interest rate for onward lending to MGSL. It was related that either the Auditor General of the Federation or the Accountant General of the Federation queried Pencom on the low-interest rate agreed on the placement. The strategy was to provide liquidity at a very low cost to MGSL and also create the market for the company by asking Pencom staff to buy properties developed by MGSL/ Aso Savings under a staff housing loan scheme.
Naturally, the business went sour probably because it was not meant to succeed in the first place. The story has it that the fund was in fact used by the family to resolve another financial embarrassment involving the mother for failure to pay a debt owed to a prominent billionaire of the Igbo extraction who involved the EFCC to recover his debt.  I had no opportunity of knowing what went wrong in that transaction and I was not interested because it was a private affair.
Thus, when Buhari came to power in 2015, it became clear that the Pencom deposit must be returned. Unfortunately, Aso Savings could not fully honor its obligations to Pencom. This situation, which looked like a problem, interestingly created another business opportunity for the Mrs. Amazu’s family who used Aso Savings to offer to Pencom an undeveloped plot of land on Airport road at a ridiculously exorbitant price of N1.6 billion. Negotiations naturally began but unfortunately or rather, fortunately, the deal couldn’t be consummated until the Federal Government’s ouster of Mrs. Amazu and her executive team from Pencom in April 2017.
A high ranking officer of Aso Savings, who pleaded anonymity, explained that since the change of management in Pencom, the Bank had been trying unsuccessfully to resolve the matter through a fund-to-assets swap, which it also offered to other customers. However, the new authorities in Pencom appeared uninterested and had been very uncooperative to close the deal. The officer exclaimed: “It is so surprising the way they are now handling the matter as if they are not civil servants anymore. The attitude towards us has changed, very different from how we had related before!”. I tried unsuccessfully to get the Pencom version of the story but what is undisputed is the fact that about Seven Hundred Million Naira of Pencom fund remains unpaid by Aso Savings to date and the sale of plot deal has also not materialized.
Interestingly, however, my efforts to obtain confirmation of the Aso Savings transaction from Pencom was not totally fruitless as I stumbled on some other issues raised in the form of posers. My contact asked why I was interested in the Aso Savings transaction when there are more critical issues where colossal amounts were expended by the ex-pencom boss without any justifiable need apart from favoring family and friends. The officer mentioned example of such white elephant projects as the building of a TV Studio in the Pencom premises awarded to a company owned by a friend of the ex-Pencom boss at a highly exorbitant price like many other media contracts executed by the same company for pencom, as well as the contract for the supply of very expensive LED Display Billboards for Pencom which was paid for but not supplied. The officer refused to divulge more about these issues but assured that “the matter and many more are well known in Pencom”.
Whether these allegations are true or not is irrelevant now as based on the law of karma, the evil that men do shall not just live after them but return to them. One of these days, the relevant authorities would unearth the truth from Pencom.
But what is worth noting about the above story is the audacity with which public officials in Nigeria pushes through their private agenda using public funds and facilities. In the case of the ex-Pencom boss, it is easy now to rationalize the apparent desperation, expressed through media comments and clearly sponsored publications, seeking to show that the Federal Government’s sack of Mrs. Amazu was illegal and must be reversed.  This campaign persisted since April 2017 to date, hoping that the Federal Government would reverse itself on this matter even though Pencom management was merely one out of dozens sacked at the same time by the Government. Now we know that the media hype was merely a desperate effort to retain the vehicle needed to protect private interest using public resources and facilities.
One of the lines in our national anthem is that the labor of our heroes past shall never be in vain. However, some of our compatriots are passionately determined to rubbish these critical legacies of selflessness and keeping of trust in public service, which were bequeathed to us by our founding fathers who sacrificed private interest and comfort to gain our independence from colonialism and put our country on the course of growth and development to a competitive modern nation-state. Nigerians of good conscience must not allow this to happen. We must, in whatever way we can, put a stop to this cancerous attitude in our national life in order to build a great nation for our posterity. As the saying goes, without integrity, your other values don’t matter.
