                                   ~-*-~
This evening's sunset cast pinks and oranges across the clouds, well visible in Portia's clearing.
You were bringing her some soup from the kitchen- lately she seemed to have not been feeling well. You were worried she wasn't sleeping much lately.
There was a strange feeling that came over you as you got closer to her cottage. You realized there weren't any bees floating around her garden or birds pecking at bird seed- in fact, her feeders were empty.
You knocked on her front door, smiling and excited to check in on her.
"Who's there?" A voice came from inside. It did sound like Portia, but there was something different.
"It's me, Portia!" You answered.
"Go away."
You frowned and stepped closer to the door. "Are you alright?"
"I told you to go!"
"Portia... I'm your friend, if you're not alright, I want to help you."
There was a beat of silence. You may have held your breath as you waited for her response. "You can't help me."
Your shoulders drooped as a breeze passed by. Something fell inside.
"Please go," she was quieter, you could barely hear her through the door.
"Should I leave the soup?"
To your surprise, the door opened slightly, and you could see Portia looking out between the doorframe and door. She looked you up and down, and then the basket you carried. She was suspicious. You'd never pranked her or done anything to warrant that.
"What's going on?"
"Leave the soup."
You reached toward the gap, hoping to open the door more.
"Leave me alone!" She shouted and slammed the door closed.
You blinked, hand on the door. You pressed an ear against the wood, straining to hear something.
Portia had started to cry. The muffled sounds made your heart break.
Things had been going so well. You'd grown closer lately and had plans to spend an afternoon in the city on your shared day off. It was hard enough to coordinate, what with the investigations of strange attacks in the city lately keeping everyone busy.
But she had told you what she wanted this evening. She wanted you to leave the soup and then go. As much as you wanted to stay and maybe even force the door open and demand answers as to her behavior lately, you also wanted to show her you respected her enough to listen.
You set the soup down near the threshold and pressed your hand on the door again. You sensed some strange magic, but instead of asking, you made a mental note to mention it to Asra whenever he returned.
Before you left, you set your forehead against the door and closed your eyes.
"I love you," you whispered. "I know its bad timing to tell you, but I mean it. However you want to take it... but I hope we still have something for each other."
With that, you turned away and made your way out of the clearing. When you were nearly at the woods' edge, you felt eyes on your back you turned toward the cottage and saw a curtain swish. Had she been watching you?
You could be patient. You hoped that she would explain whatever was happening to you- she didn't deserve to face whatever it was alone. You were sure of that.
