the way this didnt happen 😭 hindu nationalism is about nationalism/race/islamophobia, its not an issue of ‘organised religion’ when hinduism isnt even a distinct religion (as in most scholars would properly class hinduism as an umbrella term for dozens of dif religions) & the term hindu was first used by british colonists to refer to southeast asians in general (the words india and hindu both come from the same root, the indian subcontinent used to be called hindustan, and it literally refers to the indus river, not a religious belief of any kind). hindu nationalism is ethnonationalism, not religious nationalism in the way american christian nationalism is [though obv there can be overlap esp in the case of the latter] and hindu effectively stands to mean ‘not muslim’, with muslims being effectively an ethnic minority rather than a religious one. hindu nationalist ideology is based around the idea that hindus are the only real true indigenous indians and muslims, having been foreign invaders and having ‘their own country’ of pakistan, dont belong in india. literally the term hindutva was coined by a secular rationalist to describe muslims as an invading impure foreign influence that needed to be dispelled in favour of Real Indians, blood and soil style. there is also religious hindu fundamentalism like any religion but the dominant ideology of e.g the BJP is 100% one of ethnonationalism not religious fundamentalism. <- anyway this is a long and complicated issue that i am only somewhat decently read on and its hard to summarise all the nuance of it in a tumblr post but my point being that hindu nationalism has very little to do with ‘organised religion’ and only someone who is clearly culturally christian and unwilling to unpack that baggage in any way would try to present it this way in order to present themselves in a flattering way whilst literally stoking up bigotry against the group that is most targeted by hindu nationalism. pluuuus most of the people who are talking about how you can still be culturally christian whilst not believing in jesus are like people from religious minority backgrounds. so basically claiming that youre the real oppressed minority being relentlessly persecuted by those meanie muslims is just really a Choice-_-
