A3! Flower Meanings: Harugumi
Incase you haven’t been able to tell by my blog, I am really passionate about flowers! (+ flower language)
In A3! every character has a flower associated with them. As you might have heard Tsumugi talk about from time to time, almost all flowers have some sort of meaning to them. What Tsumugi is talking about is something called Hanakotoba (花言葉), which is Japan’s language for flowers!
Japanese flower language can differ from time to time from Western flower language, so incase you were ever wondering what your favorite A3! character’s flower means I am here to tell you! (This will be split up into 4 parts, one for each troupe, or else this would have been one REAALLLYYY long post 😅)
Warning: Long Post Ahead
Quick Disclaimer: before I get into things, I just want to warn you all that the flower meanings in relation to the characters can be pretty random at times? Sometimes the flowers have a deep meaningful connection to the character and their personality/backstory and you can tell they picked that flower for a reason. For others, I swear they just picked a flower at random...
1. Sakuya - Cherry Blossoms
Tumblr media
Cherry blossoms have the same meaning in Western and Japanese flower language, which is “spiritual beauty”.
Aside from that, any additional meanings really vary in depending on what type of cherry blossom tree it is ranging from gracefulness, innocence, calmness, etc.
( Cherry Blossoms have a very deep meaning in Japanese culture, but to explain it all in this post would take up a lot of time and space. If you want to find out more there are lots of resources online!)
Fun fact: In Japan cherry blossoms are the birthday flower for April 9th, which is Tsuzuru’s birthday!
2. Masumi - Violets
Tumblr media
Violets represent humility (humbleness), honesty, and “small happiness” (aka the little things in life which makes you happy during the day, like drinking a cup of your favorite tea, petting a puppy, seeing some flowers bloom, etc.)
Masumi is usually depicted with both white and purple violets in his cards. Purple violets have a specific meaning of chastity and love, and white violets specifically represent “Innocent Love”.
I feel like violets fit him pretty well??? Especially the white violets since he really loves the director and I feel like that could fall under the “innocent love” category? 🤷‍♀️
3. Tsuzuru - Dandelions
Tumblr media
Dandelions have the same meaning in both Japanese and Western flower language, which is “oracle” and “oracle of love” (???????) though Japanese flower meanings throws in the extra meanings “sincere love” and “separation”.
In flower language usually flowers can have extra meanings depending on what color it is, but for dandelions the meaning is the same no matter what color.
... Personally, I feel like Tsuzuru is in the group of mankai members who got a flower assigned to them based on aesthetic with the meaning having no correlation to the character...
4. Itaru - Gerbera
Tumblr media
The general flower meaning for Gerbera is to be hopeful and “keep moving forward”!
Overall it seems Itaru gets associated with pink gerbera’s the most which have a specific meaning of “subtle beauty”. Yellow/orange gerbera’s though, like the one in his pocket in this card, stand for “ultimate beauty” and “friendliness”.
I feel like the yellow gerbera’s could be somewhat related to his “work itaru” persona? Because that version of Itaru is social and friendly with his coworkers and he relies on his looks a lot? 😅
Fun Fact: In Japan, Gerbera’s are the birthday flower for August 1st which is Kazunari’s birthday!
5. Citron - Jasmine
Tumblr media
Citron’s flower is another one that has pretty much the same meaning in Japanese and Western flower language, which is overall is “grace/gracefulness” and “friendliness”.
Citron specifically always has white Jasmine which is specifically associated with meaning someone who is warm (/warmhearted?) and gentle, and someone who is also very amorous(/kinda flirty?)
I feel like this flower suits him very much! Since he is a prince he has that graceful side to him, but overall is very friendly and nice to everyone and gets along very well with the ladies in the shopping district 😂
6. Chikage - Lily of the Valley
(Lily of the valley are one of my favorite flowers and the fact that this is Chikage’s flower makes thing 10x more great to me 😂💗)
Tumblr media
In both Western and Japanese flower language Lily of the Valley means “Return of Happiness/ happiness will come again (to you)” along with purity, chastity, and humility (humbleness).
I feel like its pretty clear they gave Chikage this flower based on his story arch!
(Fun fact: His birthday flower is snapdragons, which in western flower language represents deception 😂)
_________________________________________________________
Next part will be the summer troupe!
Since this is the end of the post, I feel like I should explain quick that I’ve studied flowers and flower language (& Japanese flower language) quite a bit in Uni for projects, which is why I have a strong interest in this 🤷‍♀️
