Okay guys it’s here. This is the house walkthrough. I didn’t show you the walkthrough we did a year ago ‘cause it was broken up into three parts and in the dreaded portrait phone format. This time we turned the phone sideways. But below the cut are all the fixes we’ve done so far in the year and a half we’ve been here, as well as the things that still need doing. We do what we can ourselves, but often we have to call professionals. This house was neglected for decades and everyone in the neighborhood seems to know it. I can’t tell you how excited I am about the progress we’ve made and the decor I’ve gotten to put up. We made this originally for Sergey’s family in Russia but I wanna share it with you guys too because, again, excited about all the progress. It looks like a HOME.
Long list of done/not done items or at least all the things Child can remember at the moment there’s probably more, so it goes under the cut.
Outside issues taken care of:
One dead tree and one dangerous leaning tree removed
Deck: rotted planks replaced, properly stained.
Rotted decorative gates removed
“Dog shed” bleached & power sprayed clean, it’s a proper storage shed now.
Water main shutoff replaced (previously unable to turn off the water main, afraid the valve would break)
Outside issues still to fix:
One fence is collapsed in multiple places, needs replacing
Rip out all old fencing around the garden, remove old garden boxes
Get pumps working in both ponds
Replace bridge to front door: shows signs of decay
Under consideration: fence around whole property
First floor issues taken care of:
Removed 1 year supply of dental floss from the sink drains
Wiggly toilet properly bolted down.
Worst water-damaged baseboards replaced.
Fridge, oven, microwave, dishwasher, washer and dryer all replaced (the ones that came with the house were all on their last legs).
Fixed fridge water line, which actually gives us water and ice now.
Repainted, cleaned, and furnished the back bathroom with shower curtain, shower caddy, and fitting blinds.
Blinds for all windows in the TV room
Caulked dining room chimney to get rid of water seepage, fixed damaged wall interior, had wall fixed and repainted.
Replaced ceiling fan in the office.
Repainted almost every room
Put up shelves in the garage and organized “keep” junk, got the real junk hauled away.
Removed wood wine racks from closet under the stairs, swept out tons of mouse droppings, repainted the room, put up shelves. (thank you to Sergey’s mom, I could not handle the mouse droppings)
Replaced all light bulbs with LED lights.
Laid thin rug by front and back doors
Dusty’s art room: Formerly a junk dump room. Cleaned out, termite and damp rot damage torn out and replaced, shelves and desk and outlets and lights and small AC unit installed.
Garage doors both fixed. They open/close properly now.
Several broken doorknobs replaced.
Evicted termite nest by the Great Hall fireplace
First floor issues still to fix:
Caulking gaps between baseboards and the floor in almost every room (in progress)
Great Hall fireplace needs three major fixes before it’s usable
Wall in the Great Hall is buckled from water damage, drywall needs repair/replacing.
Former dog-door needs to be patched (half done).
All sliding glass doors need to be replaced, they’re not properly sealed.
Install vent fan in the laundry room
Fix water damaged kitchen window framing
Stove vent needs fixing
Second floor issues taken care of:
Two super ugly bathrooms repainted (and in one case, stripped of wallpaper, replastered, and then repainted)
Temporary roof “patch” that had been left in place for years is now properly repaired
Very ugly spiral staircase repainted by hand.
GUTTERS INSTALLED. There were NONE when we came. On a Houston house. No gutters. Why.
Roof leaks fixed or caulked properly.
Wiggly toilet properly bolted down.
Roof extension built over biggest balcony, which prevents water from leaking down into Dusty’s art room (as was happening before). Gutters added on THAT too.
Broken house heater replaced.
Replaced a bunch of nasty rusted/molding vent plates
Caulked guest bathtub, as water was leaking through the ceiling of the bathroom directly below it. Issue fixed by caulking.
Second floor issues still to fix:
Master bedroom needs ceiling replaced, soundproof walls/window, and reducting.
Whole house needs reducting.
Replace/install bathroom vent fans in two places.
Install another entrance to the attic so it has two points of entry.
Repair/repaint balconies and outside stairs.
Fix hot water pressure in guest bathroom
Fix “ugodly mess” of incorrect plumbing left to us
Replace all fire/carbon monoxide alarms
An enclosed patio room we have can’t be used until we install a drain in the floor and plumbing for a hose, so it can be sprayed clean.
Smokestack on the water heater is apparently a fire hazard that needs to be fixed.

Hidden British Libraries
We take a tour of some of the most historic and beautiful British libraries to find reading rooms worthy of our literary greats
Duke Humfrey’s Library. Credit: Greg Smolonski/Bodleian Libraries/University of Oxford
Oxford
Oxford’s university libraries are among the oldest and most celebrated in the world. Generations of students have been consulting their shelves since the Middle Ages, when a room in the university church of St Mary the Virgin was set aside for scholars. Today, Oxford’s Bodleian Library has over 12 million printed items, housed in 30 different sites. The historic core of the Bodleian can be found in two remarkable buildings: Duke Humfrey’s Library and the Radcliffe Camera.
Humfrey, Duke of Gloucester and younger brother of King Henry V, originally gave the university his priceless collection of more than 281 manuscripts for the opening of his namesake library in 1488. Sadly, just three of these manuscripts survive today, as the library was purged of ‘superstitious’ books during the English Reformation. The library was revived by Thomas Bodley, a wealthy diplomat in the court of Queen Elizabeth I, who married a rich widow (whose first husband had made a fortune trading in pilchards).
The old library was refurbished to house 2,500 books in 1602 and became a legal deposit library, with the right to acquire every book published in the kingdom. It became tradition that the Bodleian’s collection could only be read in situ, no books were to be loaned. Even King Charles I was refused permission to borrow a book in 1645.
Duke Humfrey’s Library is now the oldest reading room in the university and houses ancient and rare items, from manuscripts of the Gospels from the 3rd century to a Shakespeare First Folio and a copy of the Gutenberg Bible (one of only 49 left in the world). With its original oak bookcases and intricate panelled ceiling, Duke Humfrey’s is a time capsule from a distant era. No wonder it was used as the location for the Hogwarts library in the Harry Potter films.
Over the centuries, new libraries were built to house Oxford’s ever-expanding collection. The best of them is the Radcliffe Camera – a monumental circular domed building, which is one of Oxford’s most spectacular sights. Opened in 1749, it was named after its donor, physician John Radcliffe, (the word camera means room in Latin). The ‘Rad Cam’s’ golden stone walls house England’s earliest circular library and is now one of the main reading rooms of the university. However, visitors can see for themselves the Radcliffe’s glorious spiral staircase and can gaze from the upper gallery at the domed ceiling. It’s a wonder students can keep their heads in their books.

Hereford
Older than any of Oxford’s libraries, is the Chained Library at Hereford Cathedral, which has been a working theological library since the early 12th century. Although now housed in a modern extension in the Cathedral Courtyard, it can claim to be one of the oldest libraries in the world, still keeping its ancient books with the original chains, rods and locks intact.
Chained Library, Hereford
Books were rare in medieval times, each one meticulously inscribed and illuminated by craftsmen, so this ancient security system was vital to prevent theft. The Chained Library’s bookcases, which date from the early 17th century, contain 229 precious manuscripts. The oldest volume is the Hereford Gospels, dating from 800AD, but the glory of the collection is the astonishing Hereford Mappa Mundi, one of the world’s unique medieval treasures.
Measuring five feet by four, this extraordinary single sheet of vellum (calf skin) shows the history, geography and destiny of humanity as understood in Christian Europe in the late 13th century. It contains drawings of more than 400 cities and towns, Biblical events, animals, birds and strange creatures, and pictures from classical mythology.
Although now recognised as the most remarkable illustrated English manuscript of any kind, it was little regarded for centuries and, at one stage, was buried beneath the floor of the cathedral.
John Rylands Library, Manchester. Credit: John Rylands Library
Manchester
Manchester was Britain’s first industrial city and its museums reflect its historic place as the Victorian ‘Northern Powerhouse’, but it is also home to what is often described as ‘the Taj Mahal of the North-West’, the John Rylands Library. The nickname is a reference to widow Enriqueta Rylands’ love for her husband; Rylands dedicated the library to her late husband John Rylands, one of the city’s richest manufacturers.
A woman of commanding ability, Enriqueta oversaw every detail of the building of the library with a fervour bordering on the religious. Indeed, with its soaring Gothic spires, magnificent main staircase, vaulted ceilings and superb stained glass windows, the John Rylands Library, which opened in 1900, looks more like a cathedral than a reading room.
Enriqueta wanted the library to be an inspiration to the city’s huddled masses and a showcase for Manchester’s innovative  industries. Thus the building was one of the first in the city to be lit by electricity and boasted a revolutionary air-filtering system to reduce pollution. Art nouveau light fittings, radiator grilles and metalwork, even the toilets, with their plush marble-top sinks and oak cisterns (and with enough room for Victorian ladies and their bustles), were designed to show off the city’s superlative craftsmanship.
The treasures of the library span well over five millennia and derive from all corners of the globe. From 5,000-year-old clay tablets to Dickens’ novels in their original wrappers, the collection also includes a first edition of Shakespeare’s Sonnets and the 2nd-century St John Fragment – the oldest existing remnant of the New Testament. Other highlights include the Rylands Haggadah, a beautiful Hebrew 14th-century manuscript and the Bhagavata Purana, a sacred Hindu text written on a 15-metre roll of silk.
The library was built next to what was then a slum to show Manchester’s underclass that culture could be on their doorstep. Lovingly preserved in all its splendid detail, the John Rylands Library remains free, a haven of man’s pursuit of intellectual brilliance in a harsh industrial climate.
Chester
Tucked away in the tiny village of Hawarden, near the historic city of Chester, is Britain’s only Prime Ministerial library and also the only public library with bed and breakfast attached, Gladstone’s.
There are 26 bedrooms secreted around this delightful Grade I listed building, which was bequeathed to the nation by William Ewart Gladstone, the ‘Grand Old Man’ who dominated British politics in the Victorian era, becoming prime minister four times and spending 62 years in the House of Commons.
Gladstone’s Library
Gladstone was a great believer in reading and read more than two thirds of the 32,000 books he donated to create the library. Then in his eighties, he used a wheelbarrow to transport the books from his home to the library and unpacked them himself. The existing library now has more than a quarter of a million items and visitors can spend the day browsing the exquisite reading room, reading by the fire or taking part in one of the regular tours. Gladstone’s also hosts dozens of lectures, masterclasses and talks, as well as organising a major literary festival every September.

The Signet Library, in the centre of Edinburgh’s Old Town, was described by King George IV, as “the finest drawing room in Europe”. The library, built in 1822, is home to the prestigious Society of Writers to her Majesty’s Signet (also known as the WS Society), an association of Scottish lawyers and one of the oldest professional bodies in the world.
The Signet’s two libraries are the last word in Georgian elegance, lined with classical pillars and casement bookcases.
The Upper Library also boasts a lavish classical cupola painting decorating the ceiling dome and a massive stained glass window commemorating Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee.
The Signet is not generally open to the public, although afternoon tea can be booked in the Lower Library.

Chapter 9: Shots Fired
We held the get togethers on a weekly basis. The only time we took a break was during the last week of November. This, I learned during one of our map room conferences, was a worldwide holiday in Ivaline.
“It’s the Great Gathering. Every year people of the four nations visit their families.” Atalanta explained. Kennedia continued excitedly.
“Yeah, it’s mainly for those who joined other nations. We get to see our families for a whole week! Families, like mine, with members in other countries will meet in the Valley of Avalon. You should see it Allie! There are all of these colored tents and pavilions! There is always something cooking and you can smell it from anywhere in the valley!”
“Don’t forget the gifts, Honeysuckle.”
“Oh! The gifts, everyone gives one gift to each family member. The palace gives each student a budget for gifts, so why don’t we all go to the market tomorrow!” Kennedia arranged for us to meet after breakfast and ride one of the horse drawn carriages that went to and from the palace down to the capital city below by the hour.
Lailoria was the Venice of Ivaline, the glacial water from the mountains created pristine canals running all throughout the city. They ran glowing sand down the bottom of the canals, Each street had dyed the sand a different color. The layout of the city reminded me of the agricultural plateaus that I saw when my family and I visited Peru one summer. Each street had a different elevation than the others, as well as the buildings built on it.
As we stepped out of the carriage and Kennedia dragged us to Daggers and Dresses, one of the most frequented clothing stores for the palace’s students. The palace had given us a bit of money to buy formal wear for the Gathering’s send off banquet the next day. We spent an hour picking through and trying on various outfits and scabbards.
I was trying on a formal gown that ended above my knees. It was a deep purple silk that made my newly neon eyes pop, and the bodice was an off shoulder with a velvet trim. The trim was repeated to outline the basque waist. The sleeves came down to my wrist and tapered over my hand until it came at a point at the base of my middle finger. A cape that ended at my hips hung from the back of my dress that swayed behind me as I posed in front of the mirror.
“Why do all of these dresses end above or at the knee?” I pondered as I slipped knives into their sheathes inside the knee high black leather boots.
“It’s because you can’t kick people in full length dresses,” Atalanta answered, examining her outfit with a hard eye. She wore a tight, sleeveless green shirt patterned with a deep red tiger ready to pounce. It reached mid thigh over the matching silver silk pants. Strapped to her shoulder was a black leather quiver with her arrows. The quiver had the same tiger designs pressed into the leather.
“You have to have special training before you can wear stilettos for similar reasons,” Kennedia added in as the boys walked towards us with their choices.
“Looking good ladies! Check us out!” Daedalus exclaimed as both he and Robin spun around, showing off their ensembles.
“Very beautiful, Honeysuckle, but you knew that.” Robin complemented, spinning Kennedia around in her light orange dress. It was a cheerful piece with a sweetheart neckline and a ball gown skirt. There were three  small throwing knives in their place around her calf. Robin was wearing a silver breastplate with a blue silk undershirt. He wore black trousers and a scabbard for his khopesh at his belt. Daedalus, however, seemed to be wearing a red toga with a gold trim, wearing his sword at his back. Spade formal apparel, I observed, didn’t seem to come from a particular point in time, you could find a party outfit from any point in Pangaean history, along with a few unfamiliar ones. You could wear whatever you wanted to formal functions, so long as it looked fancy.
“Very charming.” I commented. “Now I believe we are all happy with our choices, so why don’t we finish up here and start window shopping for our parents’ presents?” Half an hour later we stood in the street debating what to do next. I had to show the cashier manning the store the bracelet marking me a student at the palace, verifying that I was old enough to buy the daggers.
“Why don’t we split into two groups and meet up at the Ebony’s at lunch?” Atalanta suggested, and it ended up she went with Robin to gaze at some music and bookstores while Kennedia and Daedalus went with me to look at some of the Guild’s shops. Kennedia bought little figurines of dragons for her little brothers, each made of a different material so they don’t get mixed up. Daedalus found a stained glass butterfly that was filled with sand so it glowed gently.
“She loves butterflies,” He told me as we were waiting in line with him, “We have a garden at home that’s filled with them every spring.”
I had to look a bit harder for my gift. Eventually though, I found a blue silk scarf for my mother and a decorative knife scabbard for her husband, who would hunt from time to time. When I was finished, we head off to meet with the others.
Ebony’s turned out to be a small cafe on the corner of a green and blue canal that Robin had discovered earlier in the year. The walls were lined by bookshelves filled to the brim with tomes of all sizes. True to its name, the tables and shelves were crafted out of ebony wood. The owners of the establishment were a sweet elderly couple, Mr. Ebony was a Guild member who had carved all of the furniture and stitched every one of the multitude of pillows. There was a fire pit in the center of the room which cast a warm glow across the cafe. Instead of normal tables and chairs, there were only armchairs and couches with small tea tables or coffee tables.
“So what did you two get for your families?” Inquired Kennedia, and it was Atalanta who answered first.
“I bought my mom and dad instruments, music kind of runs in my family.” Robin waited until bursting into a rant about all of the books he got for all of his little brothers and Dancers. He was cut off by a waiter bringing us our order.
“Oh that’s a good one!” He said, pointing to the book in Kennedia’s hand.
“I know right? He’s such a good writer!” She responded, gladly accepting her plate of pasta. After we finished eating lunch, we all ordered beverages to drink while we passed the time. We spent the next few hours sitting in that cozy cafe. Daedalus and Atalanta were playing table chess while drinking tea while the Muses and I were sitting quietly reading. I had discovered the most delightful beverage gingerbread hot chocolate and was on my third cup when I raised a question.
“What happens to those of us whose families are in other worlds?” I asked, and it was Daedalus who had the answer.
“We go visit our origin worlds, the nations always send convoys to the Tower so the Keeper can send us back into our worlds. We are each given charms that when activated transport them back to Ivaline.” As he finished he looked outside and his eyes widened.
“Blades it’s late, we’d better hurry if we don’t want to walk to the palace!”
When we stepped out into the street I was struck once again by how beautiful the capital city was. With the light fading, the canals began to glow even brighter, eliminating any need for street lights. We hurried to the carriage station, and made it just before the last one made off.
I gazed up to the palace as we neared it, and was shocked not by it’s beauty, which by now I was used to, but how intimidating it was.
The entire thing was made of blackstone, which means it stood out from the rest of the mountains. It was a classic example of gothic architecture, with looming arches and towers shooting into the sky like daggers. The intricate details and stained glass windows exuded wealth and excess. Dragons and eagles dotted the structure as gargoyles with their talons outstretched and teeth shown in a snarl. It was all for the world a dangerous beauty.
The next day was a flurry of activity. I spent most of the day with the Dancers, practicing for the dance. It was one of the few occasions that the Dancers practiced together out on the main lawn instead of their airy studios. We danced along to the Flock’s musical scores. I was currently practicing a waltz with Daniel, who seemed a bit nervous but other than that a good dancer. When the dance ended, I dropped his hand walked towards Daedalus, who was waving me over.
“What’s up?” I asked.
“Belladonna’s looking for you, apparently your little turncoat hawk has returned.” Belladonna had grown quite quickly over the past month, and was able to communicate with all of the Eagles, because she trusted all of us. Because of this, she acted as something like an undercover courier. She also served as a lookout for anything suspicious, as well as she could. Usually it ended up being something trivial, given she is still a child. But this seemed important.
I slipped away from field at break and up the stairs. I made my way to the map room, where we had agreed to meet should any developments occur. Robin and Kennedia were already finished decoding the note, and Briar was perched nearby on the back of my chair. Kennedia was the only one who looked up to greet me.
“Oh good, you’re here, this note spells trouble.” She handed the freshly translated note to me.
Dear Constrictor,
It appears that our plans have been discovered, however, it seems that those aware of our schemes are little more than a band of school children. While I doubt anything shall become of this I want to be certain. I am giving you the rare chance to redeem yourself. The youths who must be silenced are named Allie Sage and Kennedia Amaryllis.
Do not disappoint me,
Ouroboros
“This is bad.” Robin exclaimed, worried.
“I heard Belladonna call for a meeting. What’s happened?” Atalanta was just coming down the steps, and we gave her a moment to read through the note.
“This is bad,” She concurred, “but it could be worse. Allie and Kennedia are the only ones listed, which shows that whoever is behind this has no knowledge that we have a plan against them. This means we can carry on mostly unhindered, although I would advise both of you to stay on your guard and together whenever possible.” When she finished the bell for lunch rang.
“Let’s go.” I said, thinking quickly. “Make sure that we enter at different times and places. Let’s sit at different tables for a while to. Robin, Kennedia, you two can go together. You’re a known couple so that won’t be as suspicious. Atalanta, Daedalus, you sit together because you always have. Make sure you enter through the same entrances you would if you were coming from practice. I’ll take lunch in my room so I can send Briar on her way. Kennedia, you copied the note down, didn’t you?”
She nodded her response, and we dispersed into the tunnels.
That evening, Atalanta walked with us to the Celebration Hall. It was decorated with an entire rainbow of silks and sands that set the room aglow. I could see couples waltzing around the room. Around, I saw some of my Dancers and Brothers dancing alone, twirling and moving around the floor in whatever way they saw fit. For a moment I was tempted to join them, I felt the pull from the core of my chest, straining to spin and step to the music.
Then I saw Kennedia shift out of the corner of my eye and came back to the situation at hand. Atalanta went off to greet a Flock friend of hers and Kennedia and I mingled a bit on the sidelines. Robin met up with us as a waiter was refilling our cups.
I took a sip of the clear blue liquid, gazing out over the dancer’s once more as they exchanged lover’s greetings. Before I could become too enthralled, however, my dragon coiled around me, and through red eyes I could see Kennedia bring a flaring red glass to her lips, drawing the now lethally scarlet drink to her mouth.
My hand lashed out, an open handed hit to her knuckles sent the drink clattering to the ground. At my throat, I felt the dragon relax.
“Blades Allie, what are you thinking?!” Kennedia exclaimed, trying to rub off some of the beverage that had spilled across the hem of her dress. I wasn’t listening, I was scanning the ballroom, and I just managed to catch a glimpse of the waiter who served us slip through the doors leading to the gardens.
I tore through the ballroom, weaving through paired and single dancers in a mad dash through the the gilded doors. I looked around frantically for a moment before stepping into the garden cautiously. My dragon showed me a shadowed figure creeping behind me.
I whipped around just in time to dodge an axe as it came hurling down. I rolled to the side and barely had a moment to make a sword before he came at me again.
This time I was prepared, and was able to intercept the blow and redirect it before it could do any damage. Even though I knew it was coming, I misjudged the force behind it and fell to the ground. I scrambled to my feet only to be knocked out cold by a brutal hit to the back of my head.
I woke in a wagon, my dragon gave me a view of the horse drawn wagon from above, and we were moving east, away from the palace. There were two people manning the wagon up front, one driving and the other appeared to be a lookout.
“Kyrie?” I whispered, after the vision faded. “Are you there?” I heard a rustle from the corner.
“Yes.” I sighed in relief, she was flying nearby when the attack happened, so she must have followed them and flew in when they weren’t looking. It was better now that I knew I wasn’t alone, and I could feel the building anxiety settle a bit.
“Do you have a plan?” She asked, and a I shook my head. My hands were tied, literally tied. My feet weren’t spared either. I tried to loosen them, but to no avail. My captors, who I could only assume were the Vipers that were mentioned in the malevolent missives, had taken the daggers from my boots.
My eyes widened with exhilaration as I remembered my talent. My enemies could disarm me as much as they pleased but I would always have another blade waiting for them.
It was a struggle to sit up in the swaying wagon, but I managed. I kept my back straight and adjusted my hands so they weren’t in the way. I concentrated, this new blade had to be very small in order for this to work without injuring myself in the process. A few moments later I was sawing through the ropes that restrained me. As soon as my arms were free I took a couple of minutes to move them about to get circulation flowing. Once I was finished cutting my legs free I made my way to the back of the wagon as quietly as I could. I wished the Vipers were speaking to one another, so they would be distracted, instead I prayed they were drowsy in the late night.
The moment I was out of the cabin I dropped to the ground as silently as possible. Despite my efforts, I couldn’t help the dull thud that sounded when my feet slammed into the mountain path. I crouched there silently, heart pounding in my ears as I searched for any sign that they noted my departure. They only continued down the path, oblivious to my absence. Even so, I didn’t dare move until they rounded a corner and out of sight. When they did, I straightened and stretched, relieved to stand after being tied up for Winds know how long.
“Kyrie, I want you to follow them and see if you can find their camp. But try to stay out of sight, they may know you’re my companion and I don’t want a repeat of last time.” I implored, and she brushed my cheek reassuringly before flying off into the mountains. I watched her go, then turned to gaze at the palace before beginning the long trek to the palace.
I was walking for an hour and a half when I heard a familiar voice.
“Allie!” It was Magnolia, “What happened? Everyone is looking for you!” She landed on my shoulder, and I winced when her talons sunk into my unprotected shoulder.
“What happened? How long has it been since I was abducted?” I asked.
“After the party nobody could find you or Kyrie, we tried everywhere, the studio, map room, the dorms, you were nowhere to be found. Finally Atalanta put two and two together and deduced that the Vipers must have made their move, and when Robin saw signs of a struggle we knew you might have been taken alive. None of the students could leave the Palace after dark without permission, so they sent us instead. Hawthorn took the north, while Luna took the west and Belladonna the south. It must be well past midnight, do you want me to go up ahead and tell the others you’re okay?” She asked, and after a moment's consideration I shook my head.
“I sent Kyrie on a reconnaissance mission to follow my would be captors, can you back her up?” She did as I asked her, and while I was glad for her company, I was relieved that her talons were no longer in my shoulder. I carried on up towards the palace, all the while appreciative for the Spades’ taste in formal wear.
By the time I made it to the palace, I was exhausted, but I took care to avoid the patrolling guards anyway, silently thanking the person responsible for sending my dragon to me. By the time I made it to the map room I was spent. I collapsed into my blue-backed chair gratefully. In a moment I was flocked by my Eagles, checking me for wounds and questioning my whereabouts.
“Where have you been?”
“How did you escape?”
“Are you injured?”
“Do you know who attacked you?”
Atalanta and Daedalus bombarded me with inquiries until I couldn’t tell one voice from another, and while I could by no means blame them, I couldn’t mask my gratitude when Kennedia and Robin quietly wrapped my hands around a mug of cocoa and pushed a muffin in front of me. I wolfed it down only to have another one provided right in it’s wake, and I was delighted to find the mug filled with gingerbread chocolate, which, Kennedia had informed me, was ordered at Ebony’s and picked up by Robin, who had a prodigious ability for moving undetected. The chocolate had been hanging in the fireplace behind the red backed southern chair.
They let me eat and drink in peace, until at last I spoke.
“We need to up our game.” I said firmly, and all eyes snapped to me.
“We know sweetie, but can you tell us what happened to you? We were very worried and haven’t left the map room since we sent out the scouts.” Kennedia urged.
“We weren’t the only ones concerned, when other students got wind we were looking for you, they looked with us, and we had to impress upon many that the teachers were not to know about it.” Robin added, then looked at my cut shoulder, and with a gentle touch, used his magic to heal them. “Should we have gone to the teachers?” I shook my head and told them what had happened up until I sent Magnolia to follow Kyrie.
“I hope you don’t mind.” I apologized to Kennedia, but she only waved me off and looked to me to continue.
“While I hate to say it, telling the teachers again will mean alerting the whole palace, and that would mean tipping off whoever leading the Vipers. Although I will say this, we can beat them. If tonight has shown me anything, it’s that they have weaknesses, just like us. We just need to stick with our plan and be on our guard.” I said.
“I suggest we reveal the true purpose behind the student sleepovers next gathering.” Atalanta said. “With recent events, we might have more success convincing them of our cause then we would have otherwise.”
“What if one of the students decides to rat us out?” Daedalus interjected, only Robin shook his head.
“Unlikely, if they wanted to, they probably would have already. They’ve had ample opportunity. In all likelihood they will stand by us. These get togethers have made life more exciting for the students at the palace, and gave them a reason to interact with other years outside of their art. That alone has garnered a lot of respect for us and for Allie. When they hear she was captured, they may well want to do something about it, given they are Spades, and we value loyalty more than anything.” As he said it, I realized it was true, the students treated each other like family, and would no doubt be just as protective of each other.
The thought warmed me more than any cocoa.

Beautiful Homes of Instagram I first asked to feature Tamara Anka’s home (from CitrineLiving & @citrineliving) because I always loved the classic and custom feel it has. Little did I know that she was budget conscious and very smart when it comes to making a home look a million dollars without having to break the bank. I honestly can’t tell how much she inspired me. She even has woken me up about where to shop in Canada! I don’t say this often but I feel that it can be very frustrating to shop for your home when you live in Canada. I find that furniture and home décor in general is much more expensive here than in the States and it’s harder to get the right look for less. Tamara’s home is proof that it’s possible to create a home that is classy using many Canadian companies and shopping online – which I also find to be much harder to do than in America. I am so proud, happy and inspired by today’s Beautiful Homes of Instagram and I think you will love to see this home, regardless where you live! Beautiful Homes of Instagram We’re two Designers/DIYers who built our home seven years ago, with the intention of flipping it within a year or two. It was built for a buyer in mind, so at the time, we wanted to keep the cost as low as possible by making budget conscious decisions, and create a home that would be enticing for the market. We love our private, wooded lot so much that we ended up staying and still call this spot our home today. We finished the majority of the interior ourselves – laying hardwood floors, installing all the trim, woodwork and moldings, and painted every inch! Our home is constantly evolving as we add new DIY projects to the list and one day we dream of building another home, or renovating this one to suit our needs. Exterior Details Our home has a small footprint, 1700 sq ft – and it was crucial to us to create a feeling of openness and give the impression that it is larger than it is. Keeping an open floor plan and raising the ceilings to 11 feet in the living/family room and main hallway/transition space, was an integral part of creating this feeling in our home. Stone and window shutters adds to the curb-appeal of this custom home. Exterior Lighting The exterior pendant is Crestwood Pendant by Progress Lighting. Front Door The black front door paint color is Canadian Tire Premier Exterior Paint – Midnight, Semi-gloss. What a timeless paint color! Foyer Get ready to fall in love with this beautifully appointed home! Paint color is “Collingwood OC-28 Benjamin Moore”. Dark Grey Interior Door Paint Color Dark Grey Interior Door Paint Color: Behr Cracked Pepper. Decor The entryway mirror and decor are all from HomeSense. Rug is Home Depot. Console Table & Lighting Console table is from HomeSense. Entryway Lighting: Progress Lighting – Peidmont – hand-painted by the homeowner for a two tone look. Wainscoting Adding woodwork and details with a ‘custom’ feel was an important part for the homeowner – the wainscotting is applied molding and chair rail, all painted a bright, crisp white. All Trim/Wainscotting Paint Color: Ultra Pure White by Behr. Dining room The dining room with it’s black walls is always a conversation piece in our home! It’s small but enveloping, and guests always love to linger on the settee after a meal with good conversation! I wanted the feeling of this room to be warm, welcoming and transportive – to give you the feeling that you were elsewhere other than your everyday world! The plan is to one day add built-in shelving flanking the settee as well. Spring Tablescape Decor Blue and white is a passion of mine, having grown up around it and having a mother who collected it as well, it’s become a key part of the decor in our home. Dining room Decor: All pieces are from HomeSense. Upholstered Stools – Bouclair. Contrast I am loving the contrast the dark paint color in the dining room creates against the neutral color on the remaining walls. Lighting Lighting is from Wayfair – Lighting is Varnum 4-Light Foyer Pendant by Three Posts in Vintage Gold – with shades added from Amazon. Paint Color Paint color is Cracked Pepper PPU18-1 by Behr. Rug Rug is from Wayfair. Hardwood Dark hardwood flooring is Mixed grade oak with a walnut stain. Drapery The dining room features custom drapes from Tonic Living. Transoms Large openings with architectural details such as transoms, between the entryway, dining room and main hallway creates visual interest. Kitchen The kitchen was designed around an ‘old-world-traditional-meets-modern’ look. The back wall, as the focal point, has no upper cabinets and it features counter to ceiling white subway tile. The barstools were the driving force behind the kitchen and the jumping off point for the design of this space! Kitchen Island Kitchen island features Shaker style cabinet with added trim – MDF, Black. Kitchen Island Dimension : 7’2″ x 3’7″ Kitchen Barstools: HomeSense. Lighting Kitchen Lighting: Progress Lighting – Assembly Hall Pendants. Hardware Kitchen Cabinet Hardware: Chrome Pulls are Hickory Hardware Studio Collection Bright Nickel Pull. Ceilings are 9’. Cabinet Perimeter cabinets are Shaker style with added trim – Polyester, Ivory. Farmhouse Sink: Ikea. Kitchen Runner The homeowner added a blue and white striped runner and some turkish towels to bring a coastal vibe to her ivory kitchen. Backsplash The backsplash is white ceramic subway tile with marble inset above stove. Countertop Countertop is Quartz in Misty Carrera. Kitchen Shelves Having an open shelf cabinet is a practical, economical and beautiful addition to any kitchen. Kitchen Candle Sconces – The Bombay Company. Family room Our home has an east coast traditional look and feel, and my style is collected and curated. No matching sets of furniture in here! Open Layout The kitchen opens directly to the family room. Fireplace Tamara added molding and trim above the fireplace to give it a custom look. Doesn’t it look great? Lighting is Progress Lighting – P4618 – Cherish – Six Light Circle Chandelier. Rug is from HomeSense. Bookshelf Tamara also built the bookshelves with her husband to add more storage and interest to their living room. I really like how clean and simple she kept them. Ottoman Living Room Ottoman: The Bay (it’s very old!), new feet and recovered many times! Lamps are HomeSense. Color Scheme The homeowner used the same mix of pillows on both sofas, with one different pattern on each. Lighting Tamara is always changing the lighting in her home to change the mood of the spaces. These wine barrel chandeliers add a more rustic/farmhouse feel to the living room. Shelf lighting is from Wayfair. Ceiling Family room and hallway ceilings are 11′. Pillows Pillows are from Tonic Living and HomeSense. Aren’t they stunning?! Sofas The grey sofas are Decor-rest by Steven and Chris. Paint Color Main Wall Color Throughout (entryway, hallway, living/family room): “Benjamin Moore Collingwood“. Mirrored Buffet The mirrored buffet is from Structube. Blue & White Decor is from HomeSense. Flooring The beautiful dark hardwood flooring brings warmth to this living room. Flooring is Mixed grade oak with a walnut stain. Bathroom Tamara just gave this bathroom a makeover and it looks amazing! The faux grasscloth vinyl wallpaper looks the same as real grasscloth but it’s ideal for wet spaces such as bathrooms. Wallpaper is Norwall Wallcoverings Inc. from Wayfair. Lighting is Darby Home Co. Master Bedroom The master bedroom paint color is discontinued but closest match is Lily White by Benjamin Moore. Lighting is Canadian Tire with shades added from Amazon (Furnishland Set of 5 Off White Chandelier shade, 4-inch Bottom Diameter, 4-inch Height, Cotton). Blue & White I love how crisp and timeless blue and white bedding looks. The pillow combination complements the classic look. Bedding and pillows are from HomeSense. Bed Accessories The accessories are also from HomeSense. Nightstand Nightstand: Vintage Accent Table: HomeSense Bed Bed is Versailles – King Size Bed by Structube in Charcoal – $879 Outdoors The backyard/patio was designed with three zones in mind – lounge, dining, fireplace/conversation. Dream Backyard It was crucial to create an extension of the interior of our home and feel as though it was another room that welcomes guests to linger, relax and unwind. Table & Chairs Table and chairs are from Canadian Tire. Tablescape Decor is from Home Sense. Patio Decor Blue and white decor adds a classic feel to this patio. Gazebo Outdoor Furniture/Decor: All items are from the Canadian Tire Canvas Line and some other pieces the homeowner had for many years. Private Party Accessories & Pillows: Canadian Tire & HomeSense. Between Friends Isn’t this a great place to have some friend over? Outdoor Bar Cart I like the idea of having a bar cart outdoors so you don’t have to keep going inside of the house to grab a drink or snacks. Outdoor Chair Outdoor chair is from Canadian Tire. French Doors French doors open to a backyard that was truly designed for entertainment. Exterior lighting is by Progress Lighting. Black Shutters The black shutters and window boxes are painted in Canadian Tire Premier Exterior Paint – Midnight, Semi-gloss. Lounge Area This area features an outdoor fireplace and comfy chairs. Details By bringing with the same blue and white color scheme we see indoors to the outdoors keep this entire home feeling connected. Outdoor Fireplace Can you picture yourself here by the fire with a glass of wine in hand? Life is good! Making Memories Create a home that makes not only yourself feel at home but also your family and friends when they come to visit. Interiors & Photos: “CitrineLiving“.
