There is something so uniquely beautiful about the cinematography, production design and setting of I Will Knock You. It's beauty lies in it's simplicity, realism, and the way it captures the essence of middle class Thai (and most South and South East Asian) environment.
There's nothing luxurious, high end in it, unlike in many of the recent bls featuring houses with massive rooms and perfectly-synchronized-by an-interior-designer furniture. Nothing's wrong with luxurious houses in bls, it's just that I've seen way too many of it recently .
I Will Knock You, with its walls peeling paint, tin shades, mismatched furniture, a ragtag bunch of teenage boys in way-too-big suits, a college student tutoring high schoolers for a lil extra money on the side (ahaha Thi is me, only I don't have a hs gang threatening me every day XD) hits so, so close to home.
Like, one of my neighbourhood could be Noey (I'm not even kidding, some of them are real troublemakers) and another could be Noey and I won't be surprised (not too much anyway). Like, Noey and Thi situation is so possible! Literally, so many of ppl I know get in relationships with their tutors! Some even get married lmao (tho none of them are lgbtq+ sadly, thanks to the homophobia still in work here). IWKY captures the social (and architectural!) atmosphere of a South East Asian or South Asian that well!
I had no plans of watching it, but now that I've seen the first ep, I'm so hooked! My only hope is that the rest of the eps are just as good. I don't ask for much, just being as fuuny as the first ep will do.
