On “pd” slur, Evra and others
Are we overreacting? What did Patrice Evra said? and why does it matter? Here are my toughs on the matter
Let’s start with the beginning: The hell is happening?
Patrice Evra posted a video insulting PSG and Jerome Rothen (Ex-PSG player now sport commentator). PSG responded by saying the “firmly condemn” it. At the heart of this is not only the PSG elimination of UCL by Manchester United but the word “pédé”
What is “pédé”?
Pédé also written as PD is at the start short for “pédéraste” also meaning pedophile. This is according to the definitions of TLFi, CNRTL. Larousse, another big diccioanry defines it as a “familiar, very injurious/abuse” word for homosexual.
It’s a strong slur but one commonly used specially in familiar language. However when it is consider as an homophobic slur h¡given the amalgamation between gay men and pedophilia it implies.
This origin is mostly know in France as in people usually know that “pédé” has a relation with “pédale” and “pédéraste”. The word has at times been used by the LGBTQ community but calling people that is mostly consider an injury.
And how homophobic it really is?
According to SOS-Homophobie the most well-know French association to fight against discrimination it’s quite homophobic. Interesting there was a controversy about it on 2015 after a beauty parlor manager called one of his gay employees “pédé”. On the first judgement even if a verbal aggression was recognized the Labor Court of Paris did not condemn the manager for discrimination as they estimated the “word has entered the language” however the employee appealed and the Court of Appeal de-estimated the first decision and conclude the insult was discriminatory.
Does it always have an homophobic connotation?
For me yes. It feels like the “puto” debate all over again tbh.”Puto” is a chant some Latinoamerican fans do, mostly know for Mexico nt supporters. It means “gay man” and also “male prostitute”. FIFA has condemned teams for this time ans time again. And the excuse is the same “that it doesn’t mean homosexual, it’s not about that but about cowardice etc”.
And I think this is true it does mean coward but it means “you are a coward because you are similar to gay men” it’s the accusation of homosexuality that gives those negative implication. The implication that homosexuals are coward, unmanly are part of the word in itself, it’s not a distant etymology like “canaille/canalla/canalha” that in French, Portuguese, Spanish and Italian means “rascal” or “ganster” and nobody remembers that it means “dog-like”. People are surprised by that bit of information as the word no longer is associated with dogs.
However “pédé” has the “homosexual” meaning clinging to it still, giving it the essence of it’s meaning, nobody can ignore that saying “c’est un pédé” could means that person is gay.
And that’s all I have to say. Are people overreacting? Personally I don’t think so though obviously PSG is not doing it out of their superior moral standing and deep commitment to LGBTQ+ community either.
He apologized right?
He did. And I’m happy he did, even if he accused medias I don’t think “pédé” can be taken out of context for the reason stated above. Personally (me, only me, people are free to disagree) I’m glad he apologized it show he know that using that word should not be said lightly. Better that nothing I suppose and I hope it would make other players think twice before saying that sort of thing.
I cannot end without saying that if does not surprise me as the world of football is extremely homophobic. And it applies to fan, officials and also sadly, many players. There is still a long way to go and this surely does help. Another day of not feeling welcome in this game that despite of these, like Patrice Evra I also love.
