THE LIMITS OF INFINITE SCROLL: GIFSETS AND FANMIXES AS EVOLVING FAN TRADITIONS
“But moreover, I’d argue that fan gifsets in general can be usefully read through the lens of vidding in the sense that, like vidding, they select particular moments from the source text, some highly recognizable, some not, and recontextualize them among one another, in so doing revealing or establishing new visual and thematic patterns, offering distilled readings or new meanings born of new contexts and juxtapositions.”

Roswell, New Mexico Fan Video
Tumblr media
https://photos.google.com/u/1/search/_tra_/photo/AF1QipPf-KBL3-29y2rAKEPOPV-DzbGaN6Tu1BoQF6TI
Fan edits are created to encapture a specific moment in time; a feeling, an intensity that is depicted with more than a mere recapitulation of words or the show itself. Editors strategically fit together the pieces of these montages. They complement wordless clips with a fitting chorus of voices, the playful stringing of a guitar, or the harsh thrumming of drums. They’re meant to exude adoration over a character’s development or replicate the infatuation felt between two lovers, or even adjust the viewer’s perception of a scene by rendering a customized environment.
This edit emits the sentiments of anguish, strain, and the hollowing aches of loss. The coloring is bleak, delineating the relatable isolation all of us feel when struggling with the intensities of emotion alone. Our main focus in this video is Liz Ortecho, a woman with fresh emotional wounds left by a tragedy that resulted in the lost life of her soulmate, Max Evans. However, the video doesn’t focus on the relationship between the two, instead centering its emphasis on the raw mental erosion of Liz Ortecho.
The sound that is heard in the background is “My Kind of Woman” by Mac Demarco. Yet, only a snippet of the song is used, utilizing the verse that melancholically hums the words “Feeling so tired, really falling apart”. The chords are out of tune, the singer’s voice worn, and the editor creates an environment that lulls you into feeling the same kind of fatigue that the edit emanates.
We are then thrown into the first scene right at its peak. Liz is gasping for relief in the mirror, yet she can’t seem to pull herself together for the sake of her sister. Her exterior is slowly breaking right when the words of the song reveal themselves, strategically placed when our character collapses in the shower. Her mouth is agape, her body seemingly too heavy for her legs. She’s reeling from being slammed by a wall of intense emotion, no words except inaudible sobs.
The edit then goes into a montage of expressions that Liz has shown before in times of agonizing affliction. The first, her eyes bleary, and lacking hope. The second, muffled cries, the sting of pain demanding to be kept at bay. And lastly, we see her forlorn stare, yet she turns away in hopes of upholding her strong, fearless exterior. Once again, we are reminded of the distant words in the beginning. These scenes allow for further understanding of our subject, she’s tired. She drained. And she’s falling apart.
We see a shot of Liz trembling as she grasps the gun; a memory that reminds her of Max Evans, the one who’s causing the absent-minded expression on her face. Once again tormented by the cavity of loss that only he can fill. And to confirm that he is the reason behind her collapse in agony, the editor parallels multiple scenes back to back.
Liz’s head laying on the lifeless corpse of her lover. Once again, the colors reflect the arid environment that Max’s loss fabricated. It’s then put next to a contrasting scene. Warmer colors are utilized to complement the fondness of a time of solace. Her head is nuzzled in Max’s chest, his body was warm, and her brain stupefied with adoration.
Then, another recollection appears of her holding her hand to her chest. Liz’s fond stare focused on Max, her touch placed on the area of her body where he risked everything to save her from death. But now, we’re thrown back into the present. Her hand again on her chest, reminiscing on how her beloved is no longer alive. Memories are all she has left of him.
The song lulls us into the dissonant sentiments the clips can’t produce on their own. The words animate the ragged, broken feeling that Liz Ortecho is in the midst of experiencing. This edit is well done because we’re no longer the viewer; we’re undergoing this intensity of agony and bleakness with her. It’s short, but that’s what creates such an impactful recital of events. It leaves your heart echoing the emptiness that is being illustrated, making you think of your own loss – that might feel a lot like Liz’s Max Evans.
