THE GRAVESITE OF AUTHOR LAURA INGALLS WILDER - Mansfield, Missouri. The grave of Laura Ingalls Wilder (1867-1957), American author of the immensely popular and beloved “Little House on the Prairie” juvenile book series and the inspiration for the popular 1970s/80s dramatic TV series based upon her semi-autobiographical works. Her husband Almanzo, who died in 1949, is buried with her. Laura Ingalls Wilder’s works have been continuously in print (and translated into over 40 different languages) since they first began being published in 1932. Still an inspiration for writers around the world, Wilder’s grave is a place of pilgrimage for dedicated fans. As with most celebrity gravesites, visitors pay homage by leaving a respectful tricket reflecting the deceased’s influential legacy - at Laura Ingalls Wilder’s grave the tools of the writer lovingly abound. ROCKY RIDGE: LAURA INGALLS WILDER’S LITTLE HOUSE - Mansfield, Missouri. Known as “Rocky Ridge,” this was the home of the legendary writer/pioneer Laura Ingalls Wilder (1867-1957), author of the immensely popular and beloved “Little House on the Prairie” book series (which also inspired the popular TV show based on her works). Bought for $100 by Laura and her husband Almanzo in 1894, the 40 acres of farm was soon built upon, with the first two rooms being completed the following year and its current 10-room arrangement completing by 1912. This historic home (now a registered historic place and landmark) was built by Almanzo himself, with the occasional aid of local craftsmen. It was here, on the Rocky Ridge Farm, where Laura Ingalls Wilder, starting at age 65, penned all of her famous works of popular literature (the cottage house served as her primary writing respite). The museum located near the home houses an impressive collection of Wilder and “Little House” historic items and memorabilia - and conducts numerous educational events and programs throughout the year. Tours of the home are also available. The Wilders lived out their lives here at Rocky Ridge - Laura died in this house in 1957 at the ripe-old age of 90. Laura and Almanzo, and their kin, are buried in the Mansfield Cemetery just a few minutes drive from their little house.
