hello! talk to me about thorfinn and einar vs thorfinn and canute (i love both of them)!!
Sorry for the belated reply!! Life just gets in the way sometimes :(
Aaand I love both, too!!
But if you want me to compare the two, the amount of drawings I’ve drawn for one ship versus the other is already a good indicator as to which one I prefer. So yeah, ultimately, I lean towards thornute a bit.
The thing is, EiToru are incredibly sweet, wholesome, good vibes only. I love the whole process of Einar making Thorfinn see the beauty in the world again and helping him find his reason to live, and forgive himself and move on from his sins and trauma. It’s so beautiful and I can’t exactly describe it, but Thorfinn’s childlike innocence coupled with Einar’s gentle giant, himbo energy is so bdfnksjfkdjfkxbnsfjekdnrjej. And their size difference is SO delicious omg.
On the other hand, the Thornute dynamic is so much more nuanced to me. Even though they have fewer scenes together, the ones they have are always very pivotal. They are narrative counterparts, each other’s antitheses. They have opposite ideologies but share the same goal, they are two sides of the same coin who cannot coexist, but they cannot exist without the other, either. I love how their development always hinges on the other’s. I love that they are both obstinate and kind of “radical” about their worldviews until the world proves them otherwise.
They also scratch many “classic” ship trope itches I have (i.e.: sun and moon, king and bodyguard etc.). But ultimately, the thing that makes me like it more is the drama. The tension. The unspoken yearning.
EiToru meet every day and are normal about their relationship. Thornute meet once in a year and make it everyone’s problem.
The thing about Thornute is that… honestly? They are kinda bad for each other. And they are pretty much doomed by the narrative. But and at the same time, they are also perfect for each other.
And that’s what makes them so delicious to me.
