Kildress Cemetery
Burial Park & Mortuary, est. 1821, South Nashville
Welcoming sort of place, Kildress Cemetery. For the dead, at least. Nashville’s oldest graveyard and mortuary service has been turning dirt for near two hundred years, since this booming metropolis of ours was nothing but a frontier river town. Now, it’s a quiet, sprawling maze of lichen-crusted headstones and overgrown shrubs. A walk along those gloomy rows’ll introduce you to mayors, generals, music stars, and regular folks, generation on generation. Saints and sinners, families and friends; history, now, buried six feet deep.
But on the surface? There’s a thick, saddening air of neglect. Back around the ‘50s, as the grounds filled and the price of a plot jumped, other cemeteries began to snap up the city’s dearly departed. Funds faltered, and so too did the upkeep. There’s been sporadic efforts to restore the gone-to-seed landscaping, that poor chapel. But most of the cash winds up going towards maintaining the crumbling stones and security. Something’s got to be done about those meddling kids, daring each other into the crypts and such. It just ain’t safe...
Unsurprisingly, Kildress is home to plenty of roaming Specters. So much so that even those who aren’t overly sensitive can feel it, vividly. Visitors and dedicated ghost hunters alike have come out with all sorts of odd reports. Sudden chills. Phones and cameras going haywire. The brief, terrifying sensation of a small, ghostly hand, slipping into theirs as they slowed on the path. The sound of weeping in the dead of night, and fading glimpses of a woman, clutching her belly and wandering through the stones. A smell, faint, but... sickly, coming from that old chapel. Might be those magnolia trees, heavy blossoms nodding on the breeze. Or the black mold the old groundskeeper mentioned when he closed the place, back in 2002. Clean up attempts faltered over staffing troubles, then got abandoned altogether in 2006, when a section of the foundation shifted. The chapel’s been fenced off ever since, with its tilted belfry and warping floorboards. But a little chainlink hasn’t stopped the desperate and daredevilish from sneaking in. Most don’t stay long. It’s just too damn creepy. The weird noises and mysterious, stinking puddles kind of creepy. Then there’s that dog. Don’t worry - he’s friendly. Just a little spooky.
The cemetery is nondenominational, open to all; over 20,000 have been interred here, through the years. However, the records only go back to about 1846 - everything earlier was lost during the Civil War. The rest have been digitized, including removals to other gravesites. Kildress only sees a burial or two a year these days, but the mortuary continues to offer embalming and cremation services. If you need some flowers for the occasion, The Enchanted Florist does wonderful work.
There’s a few fine tombs, monuments, and such - the vaults are kept padlocked, but like the rest of the place, aren’t awfully secure. As plenty of teenagers have found out. On the other end of things, Does from the morgue wind up in their own lonely section, under modest dated headstones. There’s some beautiful engravings and inscriptions across the cemetery, but no rubbings are allowed due to the fragility of many of the markers.
