one thing about Dune that’s still really refreshing is that there are only a few references to things a modern reader would find familiar — like, the planet Earth is only referred to in passing, in an adjectival form, as the original home of animals now found on Dune. as the books go on, there are more references to, like, real-world political figures — but there’s a science-fiction excuse, in the form of Other Memory, for why the characters making these references would know these names.
like, this is a thing that Brian Herbert + Kevin J. Anderson notably fail at in their sequel/prequel novels. it is compelling and makes sense if your characters who live 10,000+ years from “now” don’t even know what Earth is. it’s not relevant to their lives! 10,000 years is a long fucking time! but no, Brian Herbert + Kevin J. Anderson reference multiple real-world artists (like Van Gogh) in their first Dune sequel, and then things get dumber from there
