Italian is rough, the only time Jigen speaks it is during sex or passing conversation with his sister, and its often gruff, hell sometimes Jigens old accent might also come back and that's certainly cute to listen too when people get the chance too
But there's one language in particular that Zeni has a soft spot to listen to him speak.
Its French. Of all things its French, the same language Jigen had perfected over the years after making a promise to his friend during one of the darker times of his youth.
When Jigen speaks it, its smooth, rumbly, like a mild purr against the gruff of his original tone, like whiskey in a way, warm and soft and its strange to hear him talk like that, almost unnerving in some ways because you would never think Jigen could make his voice sound that appealing.
Maybe that's why he only ever hears Jigen speak French to Lupin. Which is when he heard it first.
He had gotten so used to walking into that apartment so many times that Maddie had given him a key. He walked in one day, and Jigen wasn't there to greet him at the door, so instead he walked in and hear a soft voice speaking to an even softer one down the small hallways he knew by now lead to the bedrooms
Jigens behind a open door and he's talking to someone and his voice is soft and even and he's speaking a language Zeni knows.
It's french. . .of all things
but oh, he realizes, his voice really does sound nice when he speaks it. . .
Zeni knows a lot of languages. The catch is he's not fluent in most of them; it's mostly the bare minimum to get by, maybe a select few strange phrases that have to do with attesting Lupin (have you seen this man, etc etc)
But there are a few he is fluent in: Japanese (from birth ofc), English (for its commonality), and of all things, French.
To be fair, a big part of it is because the Interpol international headquarters is in Lyon. But he also put so much effort into learning it because Lupin would tease him a lot in French during chases.
It started out as simple phrases, but because Pops is always trying to get a leg up on Lupin, he surprises the thief with a few phrasings of his own. They're serviceable and Lupin gets a kick out of them, but he knows he can do better. Over time the exchanges become more complex, less insults and more straight up conversation, but just when Pops is getting really confident with the language, Lupin stops speaking to him in it.
It confuses Zenigata for a while, and whenever he asks why (in French, ofc), Lupin just gives him a coy wink and a "you'll know someday, Pops!" in English or Japanese.
He never truly realized until he began spending so much time with Jigen.
Jigen speaking it softly, lovingly, to Lupin at his bedside
The language only spilling out when he and Jigen are in the deepest throes of passion
It clicks;
It's Lupin emparting his favorite language, one that is often considered to be the most romantic language in the world, to the people he cares most about.
And it's in this moment of passion that Zenigata reveals just how much of the language he knows to Jigen, a sort of turning point where they both acknowledge that this has gone far beyond a simple 'friends with benefits' situation.
Even though what they have can never be anything concrete, there's still a deep, borderline suffocating mutual understanding between them both that all originates from the same man

Zeni is fluent in French, over the years of trying to one up Lupin it was accidental how fluent he became in it. Zeni had also gotten so used to walking into that apartment so many times that Maddie had given him a key.
Imagine he walks in one day, and Jigen wasn't there to greet him at the door, so instead he walked in and hear a soft voice speaking to an even softer one down the small hallways he knew by now lead to the bedrooms.
From behind an open door, Zeni could just barely see Jigen standing in the doorway, the room has a cool breeze coming from it with the rumble of a AC unit, but just underneath that, there’s a softer more uneasy voice speaking French as well, a lot more weaker and tired sounding, while Jigen’s sounds more concerned and comforting in a way that just aches at Zeni’s heart and pulls on its strings.
In all his years of listening to Lupin babble in French, this was the first time he had ever heard him speak like that, so uneasy and shaky without the flaring confidence behind it, to the point Zeni’s certain it sounds like he’s about to cry and that just doesn’t sound right.
His brain translates a few of the words near autonomously and suddenly he feels like he’s snooping because the translations he knows sounds very intimate without being of a sexual nature.
It’s mostly Jigen trying to assure Lupin that “everything is ok” and to just “relax” and that “he’ll be in the living room if he needs him because pops is showing up soon” and to “try and get some sleep”
And that’s when he over hears Lupin mumbling curses almost incoherently through what it sounds like gritted teeth and between them are words that almost sound. . . “Defeated” in a way.
Words belong to phrases like “This is never going to end is it” are repeated over and over each getting more and more in-cohesive until finally Lupin mutters something like “I’m tired” and there’s a shuffling sound and Jigen starts to back out of the room and close the door but not before telling him that he’ll be in the living room once again
Zeni is still standing in the mini hall, and Jigen hasn’t noticed him, but Zeni notices Jigen, and watches as once Jigen closes the door, how he leans his head forward and puts his forehead to the door like some large weight has settled against his back
He doesn’t know how long he stands there watching, but when Jigen raises his head up and notices Zeni standing there, in almost a split second Jigen is back to his old self as if nothing ever happened
and Zeni pretends like he didn't hear anything
For Jigen’s sake he pretends like he didn’t hear anything because deep down he doesn’t want to know what that conversation was about because from what it sounded like makes him very nervous

LJS Hattrick Idea
I always liked the movie trope of people going back to where they were born and raised and either settling down or raising hell and basically after Lupins hit that’s basically what Jigen did
Jigen has always hated New York since he was younger to many bad memories to many bad decisions to much just bad luck all around
just all in all he looks at New York with disdain
Which is why he jumps at the chance to get back at the city which has taken so much from him, by going after all of the Mafia families affiliated with the group that put the hit out on his partner. Originally his idea was just to kill them all but because he started working with Zenigata, he also put a lot in jail
In the end however, despite his revenge working out, this however became a problem
Because since Zeni and him have practically wiped out the most major Syndicates, there’s a growing issue with the power dynamic that had settled in NY’s local mafia’s and because of this power imbalance, the cities mafia are basically at each others throats.
Which Jigen wouldn’t mind
he personally wants them to kill each other
Until he realizes that businesses that he and Lupin had built in NY are slowly falling apart because the imbalance. Businesses are suffering, clients are getting killed. All in all it’s a big shitshow
There’s also the issue, stemming from the fact that in the process of getting rid of high-balling major syndicates, that Jigen has basically been cemented as “Head” of all the families mostly due to infamy.
The savage blow establishing Jigens reputation. And while he doesn't WANT to be godfather, there's nothing stopping anyone from making him out to be one since he took over the Lupin gang after Lupin's accident and as a result people get mistaken that Jigens gonna run it like a mafia cause that's all he knows
Plus a lot of small time gangsters end up looking towards Jigen to help them settle power dynamics
Jigen also has to make sure no retaliation Mafia dont really have friends, they have business' associates and if Jigen cant curb the hostilities odds are he'd have to move his family
The reason hattrick comes into play, is because since becoming his partner, Zenigata had agreed to help clean up the fallout that killing/arresting large amounts of bigtimers has caused.
plus mostly cause the idea of Zeni posing as Jigen's body guard is soo hot
Because of this, Zenigata had disappeared from policing and went to go full bodyguard for a while
There could be a few solid reasons for why zeni's willing to go through with this:
no Lupin to chase after is the big one; he's bored out of his fking mind lol
he can also continue to keep an eye on jigen/ keep him in check
the police just aren't as effective in the States as they are elsewhere; they're more problematic/ cumbersome to work and deal with
Yata would probably be his only incentive to stay, but he's still pretty much out of the picture at this point
he can continue to work and do some good on the inside; dealing with the fallout continuing to provide anonymous tips to the police, etc
being able to do it full time would also mean less stress from having to constantly switch between the two sides and worry about blowing his cover
||and yes, ofc they can still fuck lmao||
It's still extremely temporary, but Zeni would stick around until jigen figures out who the fuck to put in charge so he can go back to Lupin when he heals up enough without worrying about the criminal underbelly of New York imploding :3
plus Jigen is also thinking about the gang
more allies on their side the more likely doing business in New York wont cost them a bullet in the head
people will look to them for business
big business big money
Because until Lupin is good enough to travel they’re kinda stuck in New York
Jigen is defiantly not going to leave him and if the others split they know where to come back in case
Plus with Zeni by his side, that means Jigen can teach Zenigata underground stuff just in case down the line he has to do undercover work again
Jigen keeping his side-boyfriend safe
Let’s just also say The pair
ahem mark their territory In a lot of places xD
