I posted a video of this last week. It it was flagged for nudity 🤦🏼‍♀️ and taken down before I got to read all the comments. So here we go again with no butts lol: Suzy came to me looking for a secret garden full of folk flowers and little critters. It was the first back piece I started during the pandemic at @this.time.tmrw. Suzy was super dedicated to finishing this and had the physical and emotional means to show up every two weeks or so for the year it took us to complete this. After almost a decade of worsening symptoms, I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis and Ankliosing Spondylitis a few months into this project, which means I was having to cancel appointments with Suzy left and right. Due to the wildly unpredictable nature of my conditions and the crippling pain they cause, I still have to cancel last minute on folks. A lot of us tattooers are used to working without rest and putting our clients first. But what happens when you can no longer physically do that? You work through the guilt of letting people down and you grieve for the loss of your physical independence. I’m seriously so grateful to Suzy and to all my custies for having patience with me as I learn to listen to my body and accept my limitations. After a lot of trial and error I’ve found a medication that has gettin me about 30% better. I still have a long road ahead but luckily, remission is totally possible. It’s a lonely and isolating place to be, and if you’re in the same boat, I feel for you! So many of us suffer from these “invisible” illnesses. I’m feeling ready to talk more about this and hope it resonates with folks who have chronic pain/illness.
