How A League of Their Own Is Changing the Game for Queer and Black Women

Stars Abbi Jacobson and Chanté Adams and original player Maybelle Blair chat with The Advocate for our digital cover story about making the gayest, most inclusive League yet.

Partway into the pilot of the hotly anticipated Prime Video series A League of Their Own, Max Chapman — a ringer of a pitcher — arrives at the field where tryouts for the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League are under way. On that Midwestern field in the 1940s, the women are literally hitting it out of the park, sliding into home, and catching pop-up balls behind their backs with ease. There’s a sense of joy among them, some housewives, others young women just out of school, for whom ballplaying was purely avocational, something they couldn’t take seriously if there were a meal to cook, laundry to fold, dishes to wash — that is, until the major leagues were gutted during World War II. With the male players off to war, they finally got their chance.

While players like Abbi Jacobson’s Carson and D’Arcy Carden’s Greta revel in the hope of becoming among the first women to play ball professionally, Max is turned away without a shot because she’s Black. Before exiting without a tryout, she fires a ball a few hundred yards over the heads of the women, umpires, and executives trying to make a buck off “girls’ baseball.” (“Who was that?” Carson exclaims.)

It’s the first scene in the series from creators Jacobson and Will Graham and queer executive producers Desta Tedros Reff and Jamie Babbit (who also directs) that signals to the audience that this is not your mother’s A League of Their Own. The 1992 Penny Marshall film that starred Geena Davis, Lori Petty, Rosie O’Donnell, and Madonna is a beloved piece of nostalgia that did much to tell the story of the forgotten women who played professional ball for a time. But the series goes deeper than that slice of all-American apple pie and hands back narratives to Black women who were barred from the AAGPBL, Latinx women who were a part of the league but not amplified, and queer women who found an abiding community with one another, whose stories were just under the surface in the film (O’Donnell confirmed to The Advocate in 2020 that she considered her character Doris to be gay, even if it wasn’t explicitly said).

Light spoilers ahead...

“I haven’t put anything out into the world that felt like I put so much of myself into it in a number of years. I’m feeling all the things and very excited because I feel really proud of it,” says Jacobson, whose married Carson falls for Greta while her husband is away at war. Jacobson — perhaps best known as one half of the hilarious, charming duo of best friends in Broad City (along with Ilana Glazer) who smoked weed, got into shenanigans, and loved each other deeply above all — says she’s nervous about League dropping because she cares so much about the show that’s been in the works since before the pandemic.

“This one is about a lot of big, important things — stories [that are] inspired by real people. And there’s a responsibility behind that,” she says.

“It’s also, you know, a reimagining of people’s favorite movie,” she adds with a knowing laugh.

For Jacobson, who first spoke publicly about being bisexual in 2018, the queer series is personal. It features queer femmes, butches, Black queer characters, trans folks, and several characters on a gender spectrum like the players and friends Jess (Kelly MacCormack) and Lupe (Vida and Fun Home’s Roberta Colindrez), one character representing Latinx players denied their stories.

Jacobson was just a kid when the film came out, but she remembers it fondly. It was the first time she felt validated in movies or TV as a girl who was into sports. For fans of the movie who may have trepidation about a “remake,” Jacobson assures the series isn’t that and it’s so much more.

“This movie does not need to be remade, but the stories of this generation of women who not only dreamed of playing baseball but were fucking good at it were not fully told in the film, right? The real estate of a two-hour film versus [that] of a television show to really show those marginalized stories and the stories that the film overlooked [makes a difference],” Jacobson says. “Some of the aspects of that league that were overlooked in the film, we thought were really important. I don’t think of it as a remake…the movie will be right over here whenever you want to watch it. And ours, hopefully, can exist right next to it. [The series] is expanding the lens a little bit to show more stories of athletes at the time.”

For Chanté Adams, who plays Max, a church-raised young woman who works at her mother’s hair salon while dreaming of the big leagues (and has a fling with the preacher’s wife on the side), A League of Their Own is part of her mission to share untold stories.

“When I envision my perfect career, this is the type of work that I want to continue to keep on doing,” Adams says about playing a character who pays homage to three Black women ballplayers in the Negro Leagues who never got their due — Toni Stone, Connie Morgan, and Mamie “Peanut” Johnson.

“Through this story, I feel like I’m honoring my family. I feel like I’m honoring my ancestors. I’m from Detroit. I’m a Midwestern girl. My dad is a historian, our family historian, and so [our story] involves the great migration and moving up from the South to find a better life in these factories,” Adams says.

Max is also queer and later discovers that her mother’s sibling was ostracized by the family for being trans — a story that resonates with Adams.

“When we [Adams, Jacobson, Graham] sat down and talked, I told them about…an uncle that was estranged from the family because he was gay. And he was Black. And it was the ’40s,” Adams says. “He ended up moving to San Francisco. I don’t know much about him; all I know [is] that his name was accurate. And I’ve been trying to research and find as much information on him as I can these past couple of years. [The creators] so graciously allowed the father of my character to be named Edgar in honor of my uncle, who passed away back in the ’80s.”

Max’s uncle represents an LGBTQ+ person of a silent generation making their own community, while the queer women of the central team, the Rockford Peaches, discover one another through friendship and romance. The love story that unfolds between Carson and Greta is sure to become a fan favorite. A queer femme, Greta, along with a friend and chosen family member, team slugger Jo (Melanie Field), has found a code to survive in a time when being queer could land a person in jail and ostracized from society. But others are queer too, including Lupe and Jess. And O’Donnell turns up halfway through the series playing someone who is queer and finally gets to say it, unlike her 1992 character.

Adams, who starred in the Laverne Cox vehicle Bad Hair, isn’t surprised by the nuanced storytelling, given the care taken behind the scenes to ensure as many voices as possible were represented. She recalls meeting the folks in the writers’ room over Zoom. “I got choked up…. There were Black women, queer people, trans people. It was exactly how it should be when doing a show of this caliber and in doing a show that is going to be representing so many different groups of people,” she says, adding that the makeup of the writers’ room is also reflected across the set.

“I’ve never been on a show that had this many queer people and this many people of color,” she adds.

If the fact that several Peaches in the series and many women from the other teams are queer (many of whom Lupe and Jess get to know intimately) seems like an outsized number, AAGPBL player Maybelle Blair, who came out publicly at 95 at a screening of the series at Tribeca in June, begs to differ.

“Out of 650 [players], I bet you 400 was gay,” Blair, who was dubbed “all the way May” for her prowess on the diamond, said at a panel for the series at the Frameline Film Festival a week after coming out.

“It was wonderful.… So many of the girls came in from the farms and they came in from all over the United States. And a lot of them thought they were alone too. And we had quite a time. There were so many gays in the league. It was amazing. Oh, but you know…let’s face it, we’re good athletes,” she said.

The series leans into a lot of joy — of playing ball, of finding love, and friendship. But it’s not naïve about the real threat of being found out as a queer person, a line that the charismatic and flirty Greta cautiously straddles.

“Those days…you wouldn’t dare be caught being gay. You have no idea how fearful it was. A lot of the girls that were in the service would come and visit us as our friends,” Blair says in a phone interview. “I had a lot of friends [who were] kicked out of the service on account of being gay. We had to be very careful.”

A League of Their Own has been in the works for about five years, and Jacobson met Blair in 2018. Between the time Blair came on board as a consultant — she’s now an integral part of the show’s press and screening tour — the documentary A Secret Love, about AAGPBL player Terry Donahue and her wife, Pat Henschel, wowed viewers on Netflix. Donahue, who died in 2019, was a friend of Blair’s. The relationship that developed between Blair and the show’s creative team became a critical piece of the series and a living example of the power of storytelling.

“We were developing the show and we sort of told her about our own lives. And she shared with us. It was important because she had not come out publicly until Tribeca,” Jacobson says. “I felt so privileged that she did that with us and felt that trust between us.”

While the series touches on difficult issues of race, gender presentation, queerness, and women’s rights, she sees it ultimately as one of joy in our current times when conservative politicians are seeking to shove queer people back into the shadows with anti-LGBTQ+ laws.

“I feel honored to tell those stories that were kept a secret,” Jacobson says. “And hope that that they might inspire people to feel like they’re not alone, wherever they are, if it is a place that is not accepting.”

Fandom: A League of Their Own

“All I’m saying, Shaw, is if you’re going to keep trying to bribe people with pies–”

“Which is a terrible idea, by the way,” Jo interrupted.

Maybelle nodded agreement as she flounced past en route to the kitchen. “It is, it really is, thank you, Josephine. But if you’re gonna insist, you gotta learn how to do it properly. No one ever caught a greased pig with low-grade slop, you know?”

“I…don’t,” Carson admitted, trailing behind her. Then she shook herself. “I mean, I do. I guess. I guess I can…figure it out. But also” – she put one hand on her hip and waved the other through the air – “I do know the proper way to make pies.”

Jess let out a loud laugh from where she was playing cards at the kitchen table. Esti looked at her inquisitively, and Lupe smirked and leaned over to whisper something in Spanish. Esti threw her head back and laughed brightly, and Carson narrowed her eyes before deciding it was an unrelated joke.

“I’m gonna teach you the same way I taught my oldest,” Maybelle said, pulling boxes out of the pantry and giving the milk a sniff. “Test all your ingredients, really put your tits behind it, and don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty. Oh!” She perked up and added, “And you can’t go wrong with a pinch of nutmeg. That’s it, that’s the secret family recipe.”

When she was elbow-deep in flour, Carson found the courage to say, “Can I ask you a question?”

“I don’t know how else you’ll learn, sugar.”

“No, it’s not about, um.” Carson’s forehead itched, so she scratched it with the back of her wrist. “Where are your kids? Like, right now, where…are they?”

Maybelle paused in her peeling for a moment, her face softening, then she recommenced with vigour. “I’ve got three kids. The youngest was only just off the tit when I left,” she said. “Martha, she is, she’s nearly three now. My oldest, Stilwell, he’s nine.” She tossed the last apple into the pot and turned to face Carson. “They’ve been my whole life since the day I fell pregnant the first time.”

She sounded almost angry, and Carson stammered, “Yeah, I mean. Of course. I assumed. Yeah.”

To her relief, Maybelle continued. “Jimmy, that’s…that was my guy? He was never good for much, really. Well.” She smirked and picked up a spoon to prod the stewing apples. “He was good for one thing, and he was really good for that. But otherwise.” She sighed. “He’s not a bad guy, really, just not very dependable.”

There was a long enough silence that Carson felt she’d better say something. “How long have you two been married?”

Maybelle’s cheek, all rosy from the steam coming off the cooking apples, dimpled. “Well. We’re not.”

Carson was shocked enough to stop crimping the crust. “Maybelle,” she gasped, looking at her admiringly.

Maybelle laughed her bubbly laugh. “Well, who was gonna stop me? I earned my own money at my daddy’s farm, and he certainly didn’t want me marrying Jimmy, or anyone else around town, either. The preacher sure as shootin’ didn’t like it, but that didn’t stop him trying to cop a feel at confession, did it? So as far as I can see, it’s between me and God, and God always did seem the forgiving sort.”

Carson shook her head and turned back to the pie crust. “Wow.”

“I told him, I said, ‘Jimmy, I’ve taken care of your children for nine years. You can handle them for three or four months.’”

“And that worked?”

“Who knows?” Maybelle stirred the apples lazily. “But I left them with my daddy just in case. Either Jimmy’ll step up, or he’ll skedaddle. Either one works for me.”

The two of them worked in silence until the filling was ready. Maybelle gently elbowed Carson out of the way so she could pour it in, then Carson carefully put the pie in the oven.

“People don’t give you enough credit, May,” Carson said, as they squatted to peer at the pie beginning to bake.

“I know, honey,” Maybelle said. She swatted Carson with a tea towel and sauntered out of the kitchen. “That’s how I’m able to fleece ‘em for all they’re worth.”

How to Make Cannabis Infused Blow Pops

Canna Chef: Maybelle DenoncourtBlow Pops are a wonderful combination of hard exterior lollipops with bubblegum centers. For the sake of time, I melted and infused store-bought Jolly Ranchers. Now that we have made the bubble gum, Let’s make “Blow Pops”

INFUSED BLOW POPS

Utensils - Round silicone mold (i didn't have a mold, so I used a round ice cube tray) - Lollipop Sticks Ingredients - Jolly Ranchers, I used grape and green apple (roughly three JR per lollipop) - Bubble Gum - Canna Coconut Oil - Tincture Directions - Sort the flavor of Jolly Rancher, unwrap and place in a pyrex measuring cup. - Melt in the microwave until candy is melted. - Remove from the microwave and add a tsp of canna coconut oil and tsp of tincture (you may need to adjust the amount of oil and tincture depending on how many lollipops you are making. I only made 4 lollipops.) - Take a piece of the gum and form in around the lollipop stick. - Hold the formed gum lollipop stick in the mold while spooning the melted jolly ranchers into the mold. - Hold in place until candy is hardened - Once cooled on the counter, and pop candy from the mold. Wrap in waxed paper or cellophane

Asian Hospital’s Quality Management led the celebration of the beginning of the compliance period of the 4th Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation in 2022 last July 1 via the WebEx platform where emcees Mr. Mignodel M. An audio visual presentation (AVP) featuring “A Fight We must Win” where President and CEO Mr. Andres M. Licaros, Jr. narrated the hardships and triumphs that Asian Hospital has gone through the past year. He imparted wisdom and commended the efforts of all frontliners that sacrificed so much during this pandemic.

Another AVP featured “AHMC’s Journey since 2013” where selected employees including Manager of Business Office Ms. Maybel S. Raymundo, Human Resources Business Partner Rodel M. Morales, Jr., Manager of Housekeeping Department Mr. Marvin S. Dellagas, Clinical Assistant of Nursing Services Mr. Federico S. Suarez, III, Manager of Outpatient Pharmacy Services Mr. Lugi Karl I. Egenias, RPh, Assistant Manager from Nursing Quality and Standards Mr. Marinelo C. De Chavez, and Immediate Past Chairman of Department of Pediatrics Dr. Elizabeth Ann C. Morales shared their stories.

They shared how long they have been staying with Asian Hospital and their past JCI experiences. They have reminisced their most memorable experiences during the three JCI accreditations while some have shared their nerve-wracking stories during their presentation to a JCI surveyor.

“I’d always compare accreditation to a phoenix, a bird dies from burning and from its ashes will arise a beautiful golden bird. That was always the part that I liked best, the whole family of Asian [is] united and very happy after we get accredited,” testified by Dr. Morales.

Senior Manager for Risk Management and Patient Safety Mr. Arvin Mark T. Pascual explained the All Aboard JCI 2022 Journey Map including the station that Asian Hospital is currently in, along with the stations that everyone will go through in the coming months. JCI gave Asian Hospital two options for the accreditation, either hybrid or virtual setup. He also discussed the tips to consider, tests to run before the survey begins and cited an example of a hospital abroad that underwent a virtual JCI survey.

The Director for Quality Ms. Ana Maria Y. Jimenez, PhDN, RN focused on the JCI 7th edition hospital accreditation standards update where she discussed in detail the Healthcare Organization Management Standards to everyone where she explained every standard which we will be surveyed upon. She also revealed our past JCI scores, which were improving every three years, and she is confident that we will do better than our previous score last 2019.

After her discussion, an online quiz was given to 20 participants where the winner won a Sodexo gift certificate worth 500.00. Chief Medical Officer Dr. Jose M. Acuin closed the program by thanking the doctors who participated and shared his own journey of JCI with other hospitals and in Asian Hospital.

A magic egg, an incredible start! Fight! Western Precure have arrived! Episode One.

It was just a normal Monday in Texas. The sun was shining, the birds were chirping, and…. A purple and pink flash of light appeared from inside of a farmhouse?! But nobody is in the area at the time, and nobody would be there for a few more hours yet. Therefore, no one notices, but what may happen when something or someone, notices?

“Abby! Move, pardner, an’ lemme go out first!” A girl donning blue denim overalls snaps at her sister, who shakes her head.

“No, li’l sis! Ah’m the oldest an’ Ah go first!” Abby responded, fixing the strap on her red overalls.

Abigail and Sophie are just, or are trying to, get off of their school bus. It’s not like this never happened, though. It always happened. Abigail had fair skin, blue eyes, and ginger hair tied up in a ponytail, as did Sophie. The only way to tell them apart was that Abigail frequently wore red and pink, and Sophie frequently wore blue.

“Stop arguin’, y’all!”

“But mama!” The twins whined.

“But mama nothin’. Y’all have some kinda weird tendency t’ fight, y’know? You are both in the middle of teenhood, but y’all fight like babies! Grow up, for goodness sakes!”

“Fine...” Abigail groaned.

“Ah’m gonna go first big sis!”

“Shut up, ya rotten piece of peach pie!”

Finally. Some peace and quiet at last. Unfortunately, this quiet would never last for very long. The twins always fought over everything. Anything. Even the littlest things could be fought over by the twins.

The twins then decided to head out for some more seeds and soil. Something that could end their fighting for a good while.

A couple hours later, the twins return. But like the girls they are, fighting is essential.

“Hey, li’l sis, guess what?”

The elder sister piped up.

“What, Abby?”

Sophie looks over to her

“Ah think Ah got the most crops in mah area of the ranch!”

“Who in the hell said that?! Ah believe that Ah have the most crops!” Sophie crossed her arms over her chest.

“No, Ah do!”

“Ah do, big sis!”

“Ah do li’l sis!”

“Hmph!”

After a couple minutes of arguing, the twins decide that it is nearly impossible for them to come to an agreement. Frustrated, they grumble and decide to just head inside.

“Li’l sis?”

“Huh, Abby?”

“It’s a note from our parents.‘Abigail an’ Sophie, we’ll be in town doing business for a couple days, so we will be gone during that duration. Love ya’ll and stay safe. Love, Bonnie’.”

“Big sis? Do you know--” Sophie stopped to register this. “DO YOU KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS?”

“Yes...yes! We’re gonna be home alone, pardner!”

“Yessiree!”

“Yeehaw!”

This was the only time the girls had agreed all day! Before going to make a checklist of things they should do, Sophie notices a white egg with pink and purple stars on it on top of the counter.

“Abby? Is this an egg?”

The eldest sister came over and inspected it for a moment.

“What else do ya think it is, ya dummy? An’ what’s it doin’ here? Easter was months ago! An’ it can’t be ours, since we don’t own any hens. So then where did it come from…?

“Then, let’s scramble it!” Sophie was always hungry. Sometimes instead of just growing crops, she'd just eat the seeds! Just the day before, while she was planting carrot seeds, her sister had caught her eating from the bag! But what Sophie hadn't told her is she did that frequently! She had even snuck a taste of some of Abby’s apple seeds once!

“Hell nah! What are ya, a crazy person or somethin’? This is one of the most exotic eggs Ah’ve ever seen!”

Before Sophie can reply, the egg suddenly starts to shake, and pink and purple light comes out of it as it starts to crack. The twins looked shocked, but then it splits apart.

“HOLY APPLE SEEDS!”

“Hello there, chirp! Are you two my mamas, chirp?” The speaker was none other than a newborn fluffy white chick. To add to the strangeness, she had large purple eyes, a pink beak, pink feet, a purple star on her chest, and a tiny purple bonnet tied under its chin with a bow.

“M-mamas?! What're you goin' on 'bout?!” Abby asked, startled. Meanwhile, Sophie was trying her hardest not to pass out from the shock.

“Why is the bird talkin'?! What's goin' on?!"

"I'm not a bird, chirp! I'm a fairy, chirp!" The chick clearly wasn't pleased.

There was no way Abigail would believe such a thing.

"Fairies ain't real!"

The bird puffed out her chest feathers a bit.

"If fairies weren't real, I wouldn't be here, chirp! ...Anyway, what's my name going to be, chirp?"

The girls huddle together for a few moments, before finally coming to that day’s second agreement.

Then, Abigail gently cupped the baby bird in her hands, holding her up to her face and speaking softly.

“Alright, li’l chick--”

She shot her a glare.

“Fairy, chirp!”

“We’ll name ya Sugar! Whatcha think ‘bout that name, li’l one?”

“That's a great name, chirp! For now on, my name is Sugar, chirp!”

Happy about this, the newly hatched chick (ahem, fairy), flapped her tiny wings and hovered in the air just a few inches above Abby’s hands. Once she got tired, she returned to her previous perch.

“Girls, I need to look for some...what was it again, chirp? Oh, yeah, legendary cowgirls, chirp!”

“What?”

“Hm?”

“I'll do my best to explain from what I know, chirp. I come from a magical place called Harvest Valley, chirp! It's got every single crop and flower you can imagine and more, and even has some types that can't be found in this world, chirp! Everything was peaceful, chirp! But then, one day, Barren, King of the Outlaws, appeared in the Valley with his gang, chirp! I don't know what he looks like, but from what I heard, he's probably all dark and scary and mean-looking, chirp! He and his gang stole all the crops and life from the soil, so the Valley can't grow any more food, chirp! And Barren’s set his sights on attacking this world next, chirp! The only ones who can stop him and get back everything he stole are the ones I'm looking for, chirp! The legendary cowgirls, Pretty Cure, chirp! ...At least, that's what I heard from inside my eggshell, chirp.”

“Pretty Cure…?”

“Just what is a legendary cowgirl, anyway?”

Sugar would have responded, but her stomach growled. “Never mind that, chirp! I'm hungry, chirp! Got any bread, chirp?”

Meanwhile, a man has stolen a loaf of bread from a store in the town. “Hey, you! Get back here with mah bread this instant!” The storekeeper demanded.

“Ah can't! Ah need it t’ feed mah family!” The thief retorted.

Calamity Maybelle, a fourteen-year-old bandit clad in black and green, who just so happened to be perched unnoticed on the store’s roof, sees him steal the bread, but stops him in his tracks when he tries to run off.

“You!”

“What? Where'd you come from?! Ya better not call the police!”

“Ah won’t, sweets. But Ah won’t let you escape, either. You're just what Ah need.”

She then reaches her hand straight into his chest with ease, grabbing hold onto his heart with one hand, and the loaf of bread with the other.

“If it's evil deeds you wanna do, Ah will make those dreams come true!”

Maybelle pulled his heart out of his chest and the loaf out of his hand, then jammed them together.

“Come forth, Crookinal!”

The Croonkinal emerges, and his body is left lifeless on the ground. The monster resembles a slice of bread with arms, legs, and a face. Around its eyes is a dark marking that looks like a mask, and from right under its face onwards, its body is covered in black and white horizontal stripes. “Crookinaaaaal!”

Countless citizens see the monster and call the police, but the Croonkinal makes a mess of things, destroying buildings and chasing people. Eventually, it smashes a few farmstands, including the one belonging to the Smith family! It gets out of control to a point where everyone, including the police, can do nothing but run and scream in terror.

��Girls, listen, chirp!”

“What is it?”

“I can detect…a Croonkinal, chirp!”

“What the heck is a Croonkinal, Abby?”

“Ah got no idea, li’l sis.”

“You two, follow me, chirp!”

Sugar started running across the floor towards the door.

“For what?”

“Just do it, chirp! You can trust me, chirp!”

“Ok, Sugar. Hop on Abby’s bike, an’ Ah’ll hop on mine!” The girls run outside, putting on their helmets, and Sugar gets herself seated in the pink basket on Abigail’s bike.

“Alright girls, this way, chirp!”

A short while later, the girls then see the giant slice wreaking total havoc.

“Is that a Crookinal, Sugar?

“Yes it is, chirp!”

Calamity Maybelle approached the two as they got off their bikes, giving them the most saccharine sweet voice she could muster. “Oh, dear. Is there a problem, girls?”

“Hell yeah, there's a problem! Ah dunno what ya crooktails are doin’, but Ah don’t like it!”

“Me either, Abby!”

"So, with that said…”

The girls each glare harshly at her.

“Hold it right there!"

"Reach for the sky!"

"We don't care what it takes! We won't let ya make a mess of our city anymore!"

"Not if we have anythin' t' say 'bout it!"

After saying that, both of the girls chests start to glow red and blue, respectively. From that light comes forth white, star-shaped badges with a red star on it on Abby’s, and a blue one on Sophie’s. The girls look over them curiously.

“What the heck are these?”

“Ah dunno…”

“Girls, those are Cure Badges, chirp! Now hold them out in front of you and say Pretty Cure, Let's Ride On, chirp! But you must be holding hands when you do, or else it won't work, chirp! That’s the only catch, chirp!”

“Ah’m a bit anxious, Abby!”

“Ah am too, li’l sis, but it’s worth a try!”

The twins hold hands, holding the badges out in front of them like Sugar had instructed.

“Pretty Cure, Let's Ride On!”

In a flash of red and blue light, the girls were now wearing an odd mix between cowgirl attire and cute dresses. The appearance of their hair and eyes had now changed dramatically as well.

Abigail smiled and put a hand on her hip, tipping her new hat.

“The Protector of Justice in a Red Stetson! Cure Sheriff!”

Sophie did the same, but with the opposite arms.

“The Defender of Peace in a Blue Stetson! Cure Deputy!”

“Together we shall protect our land! We will…”

The girls hold hands once more.

“Fight! Western Precure!”

They pause, taking that in.

“...What the hell did we just say?!”

Maybelle sees what the girls are doing, and looks at them in both anger and shock. She is NOT happy about this.

“Yay, chirp! You two are Pretty Cure now, chirp!”

The two newly-born Cures look at their new forms in complete shock, then ask a simple question in sync.

"What in tarnation is goin' on?!"
