What better time than to learn a little more about METARs than on a day like today ....... Who would have thought that we would encounter this weather in mid August in the UK ?? What does the acronym METAR stand for? METeorological Aviation Report What is a METAR? A METAR is a coded text report of the current weather conditions observed at an airport, and is issued every 30 minutes. It gives information on wind (speed and direction), visibility, current weather, the coverage and heights of cloud layers, temperature, dewpoint, atmospheric pressure, plus in some cases, a trend forecast for the next two hours. The image attached to this post is an example from #TeessideInternationalAirport at the time of posting. It is “decoded” meaning that more detail has been provided than the raw form as in the example below: EGNV 170520Z 36004KT 6000 -RA FEW006 BKN007 14/13 Q1008 We will look at a corresponding TAF (Terminal Aerodrome Forecast) in a later post .......
