And the fourth story, Fuguruma Youbi, is done! This one feels like an imposter syndrome callout post, except you have to be good to have imposter syndrome right? Anyway, this one really did hurt my feelings a lot, but for being based around a yokai that from what I can tell was a throwaway thought, it sure is an interesting take

Also, fun fact, looks like Tamenaga Shunsui, the POV character for this story, was an actual author of the late Edo era going into the Meiji Restoration, and one of his stories was among the first to be adapted to English after the isolationism policies ended

Anyway, standard legal stuff, I don't own this book or anything associated with it, you can buy a copy of the raw version from the link in my pinned post, I'm just making a fan translation because there isn't an official one, all that good stuff

Toutetsu is done! It's the second to last story, and it's a little surreal to think that we're almost done at this point (with Shu, anyway, god knows there's plenty of other Mononoke-adjacent translation things that are getting ready to come out too and I'm going to be grabbing them too because I have no chill lol)

As always, I don't own any rights to this book, I'm just translating...honestly for my own validation at this point and that's about it, please don't sue me

Once again, I don't own this book or anything about it, I'm only trying to translate it because if there's ever an official English translation I'll be shocked, so please don't sue me

Getting better at understanding what's going on without the translator app, though, which feels good, but this is again not anything I'd feel comfortable saying I'm good at

New thoughts on Shu (I should probably stop speculating until I get through the whole book but ah well)

So the book is very defocused on the medicine vendor and is much more focused on the people who are involved with or affected by the mononoke. There's also more of an emphasis on the development of the circumstances that allow the mononoke in, more like a chronological account of events than the show where it's more about working backwards from the perceived present to piece together what happens

But when Kusu is interrogating people or things are otherwise happen to reveal the truth and reason, he's still going back through the past, into events that he himself wouldn't have been there to influence much, but he is still shown in some cases to be inserted into the scene he's shown to witness, even if he wasn't actually there when it happened (the most obvious example of this happening is with the Train Bakeneko arc where he shows up in the background as a mannequin like the rest of them unless he actively has something to say about the situation he's witnessing, and in Zashiki Warashi he ends up talking to a younger version of the proprietess as everything jumps back to the past, even though neither he nor Shino can really do a whole lot about the situation except experience it)

I wonder if, with Shu, he is actively at some point in the near future managing the situation the mononoke have created more in the way he would be expected to by the show's standards, but what we're presented is the events that he sees when he's trying to uncover what he needs to release the sword but not from his perspective where the jumping around in the story follows his thought process?

A lot of things would suddenly make a lot more sense, at least for me (though it does open up new holes and/or creates new implications for the few times where he IS actively manipulating the situation he's seeing). Why all we see for what he uses is the sword, why he kind of just pops in and out as if just witnessing events without actually contributing to them in most cases (in this last section of Fuguruma Youbi I worked through, he literally showed up just long enough to look around and say that the truth and reason weren't there and then left just as quickly as he came--that doesn't make a whole lot of sense if he's actively in the situation to hunt the mononoke but makes a lot MORE sense if he's passively learning of the events after the fact)

Maybe it's even a matter of the cases where he's actively contributing to the situation as we see it would be the points where he's interjecting and trying to get the people in question on the track he needs them to be to find the form, truth, and reason (like how Genkei was going on about how his sister had to hate him for his cowardice causing her to take his place as a human sacrifice, before Kusu has to jump in like "that's great but your sister isn't the mononoke" and that reframing then changes the scene with Oyou and the last time Genkei saw her)

I'll take back every frustrated grumbling I've uttered about the book feeling vastly different from the show if I'm onto something here because that would be an absolutely fascinating way to frame it all
