Week 3- Studio Production Team & Green Screen Workshop

For this week the initial plan was to present and film our Cambrian News feature, but unfortunately the studio’s lights were not in function so we were unable to do this. However it gave us the opportunity to go through how a script is written and the directions a PA should give during filming alongside working with a director. It was disappointing that there was a technical difficulty as the group had planned and organised well together but the mishap allowed us to study script work closely; at the end of the session I felt much more confident about how to format and read a script.

Much like last week we took turns fulfilling production roles but the main role that was focused on this week was the job of personal assistant. One of the most important tasks for a PA is to know the script thoroughly and also to speak out the shot and camera numbers so that the people on camera in the studio know what they need to do. We practiced how to shout out the commands e.g. “on PC coming to 2 on 2 next”, this allows the team in the studio to be prepared for the upcoming shots. It was also essential for the PA to voice how much time was left of start/end of filming and to countdown to different shots.

My weakness for this week would definitely be how I struggled to keep up with the commands when everyone was reading together as it was confusing and difficult at first which was frustrating. I need to improve by going away and practicing the commands so that I am confident next time. I think my strength for this week was that although I struggled with practicing what a PA should say I realized that this was a weakness of mine and I know now what I need to improve on.

At the end of the session we were given next week’s task; to create a 5 minute programme for children. We would have to acquire a children’s storybook and base the project around it by getting sound effects used in the story and also having the presenter read the book to the viewer. Two meetings were scheduled for the week; the first consisted of giving out production roles and planning what we were going to do. At the second meeting we’d managed to get the storybook, ‘Mr Greedy’, by Roger Hargreaves from the Mr.Men series. The script writer presented their work which we went over as a group and also banded together to help the director with shots. The role that I had obtained for the next week’s production was the role of floor manager which I was very pleased with seeing as I had enjoyed the experience of it in the first week.
