Speaking as a fish nerd, I think Ariel having bright colored fins means it makes more sense for her to have dark skin than light skin.

Bright colored fish are typically in warm water -> shallow -> sunny -> tropical -> close to the equator. The people in these warmer, sunnier regions close to the equator are often darker skinned, so it makes sense that the mermaids would be too.

A pale Ariel would be from colder or deep water, so her tail would likely be more muted, and assuming she's a mammal, she would have a thick layer of blubber to keep warm.

Obviously there's exceptions to that, (wrasse my beloved) and also the fact that mermaids aren't real so you can do whatever you want when drawing or writing about them, but I just think it's neat.
