I still don’t understand what systemic power bisexuals have. Both bi women AND men have higher rates of abuse and mental illness compared to lesbians and gay men respectively. That doesn’t sound like happily blending into hetero society to me. According to Victory Institute only 7% of elected LGBT politicians in the US are bisexual with the majority being gay men/lesbians. According to a UCLA study bisexuals have higher rates of poverty compared to gay men and lesbians. Another journal (doi 10.1177/0003122416674025) shows bisexuals face a wage gap not explained by other factors.
I hear it parroted over and over that bisexuals have an advantage and I’m just not seeing how that is manifesting in reality. Their abuse/mental illness rates show they are not better off socially. Their election rates show they are not better off politically. Their poverty rates/wage gap shows they’re not better off economically. So where is this systemic power exactly? Please show me the research and I’d gladly change my mind but right now the science just isn’t backing up what you’re saying.
okay let’s break down ur three points: domestic violence, mental illness, politicians, and the wage gap + poverty rates:
1. domestic violence:
bisexuals experience homophobia. this includes from their heterosexual partners (who they’re more likely to have than same sex partners). this can explain why the perpetrators of IPV of most bisexuals, men and women, are of the opposite sex. not male! but the opposite sex specifically.
bisexual women have mostly male perpetrators.

this can be easily explained by the fact that bisexuals are in closer proximity to heterosexuals, who are often violently homophobic. look at the many famous bisexual women who have opened up about facing IPV…. all of them have male perpetrators.
gay people are obviously far less likely to date the opposite sex, and despite that a huge portion of perpetrators of IPV against lesbians were previous male partners! but of course due to us not being in as close of a proximity to heterosexuals and being far less likely to date them, we are also less likely to face homophobic violence than our partners.
i don’t think that somehow translates to bisexuals not having power over homosexuals. unless you think facing OSA and acting on it but being disadvantaged still by homophobia from ur het partners is worse i guess.
2. mental illness:
i tried to find studies on this and the only ones i found either said that there’s no significant difference between mental illness when comparing gay men & bi men (gay men with slightly higher rates of mental illness) but there is when comparing bi women to everyone else, or that there’s no significant difference between gay & bi people in terms of mental health:

it’s quite likely the mental health issues are also linked to the higher likelihood of facing IPV.

3. politicians:
this one is honestly such a moot point because you’re comparing one group where most people find their sexual orientation to be important and most are out to a group where most think their sexuality doesn’t matter and haven’t told most or even anyone of their sexuality.

so instead of this highlighting that bisexuals don’t have any advantages over gay ppl, it highlights once again the lack of bi people that make their bisexuality public enough for u to categorise them as bisexual politicians to begin with.
4. poverty rates & wage gap:
honestly this argument can also result in arguing lesbians have privilege over all women and even some men lol because many studies found that lesbians generally earn higher than all their female counterparts. this was explained in one study to be a result of lesbians placing more focus on their careers, being less likely to have kids, and knowing from a young age that they need to be more educated + work harder as they won’t have a husband that can help around.

one study states that there’s no statistically significant difference between lesbians’ and hetero women’s’ poverty rates nor a significant difference for men in terms of sexuality.

i can’t add anymore screenshots of studies but it’s also worth noting that these studies are also inherently flawed because a lot of them group people with PREDOMINANTLY same sex attraction under gay. some studies claim gay men have the worst wage gap out of men and some say gay men have a better wage than straight men. some studies say there’s no significant difference between the sexualities irt women and some say there is. one thing that’s consistent tho is that bi men do not earn significantly less than gay men.
besides that, going through almost all of these studies, they all had unbelievably small sample sizes ESPECIALLY for bisexuals which makes the possibility of these results being misleading also more likely.
if u wanna focus on interpersonal aspects then that’s up to u, im focused on the legal aspect of things + hate crimes + the fact that many bi people more or less live the same way as heterosexuals and are thought to be heterosexual by the people around them as a result of not being open about their sexuality (also as a result of them not finding their sexuality to be important). so politically, we have literally no idea because most bi ppl aren’t openly bi so how would we know how many bi ppl there are in politics? economically, there’s no consistent findings but it’s moreso bi women that are disadvantaged over others, not bi men, so idk how we can argue here that it’s bc of bisexuality that they’re disadvantaged rather than a combination of demographic factors. socially, in terms of mental health the findings are also not consistent and in terms of domestic violence, it’s so overwhelmingly perpetrated by their opposite sex partners that i find it hard to see how this is anything other than a case of “bi people are in closer proximity to heterosexuals and thus more likely to face abuse from them” ie lifestyle mixed with the reality of homophobia rather than actually a disadvantage compared to gay ppl.
