Checking In On Prada SS22 Menswear

Prada’s Spring/Summer 2022 Menswear collection by Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons was inspired by the idea of leaving behind the COVID-ridden years of 2020-2021 and embracing wide open spaces of the outdoors, moving forward to embrace a new, free and brave world. The collection show takes place in Sardinia, Italy on the beautiful sandy beaches. The beach represents the embracement of the wide open spaces and refreshing the humans relationship with nature following year of being under lockdown. Miuccia Prada described the new collection as “A sense of the utopian, the ideal, of hope, positivity. To expose yourself to nature, to go to the beach—it’s freedom. It is utopian. That is really a primary need—an intellectual need, too.” After the long days indoors, Miuccia, Raf and the brand of Prada are ready to bare it all in 2022, showing off heavy skin and feeling a new found sense of freedom you haven’t quite experienced before.

The collection was drawn into the light, embracing bright, bold colors across shirts, leather jackets, hoodies, tanks, coats and accessories. Prada sandals meant to be worn on the beach or by the pool, leather bags recognized by the classic triangle Prada logo stand out next to the bold patterns conceptualized from the minds of Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons. The accessory that may end up being the staple of the collection is the leather bucket hats, which include the triangle zipper- pocket attached on the back brim, reminiscent of the Prada Napa leather triangle pouch gloves - a staple in modern day Prada. Prada wallets, handbags, shoulder bags and sunglasses were present throughout the show, in black as well as varying summer colors. It is almost guaranteed you will not be able to go on vacation without seeing one of these bold Prada bags or sunglasses on the beach; and you most certainly will not be able to log into Instagram next summer without a glimpse into what we’re calling “The Summer of Prada”.

Perhaps the most intriguing article of clothing is the button up shirts embossed with different images connecting to the beach theme. These images include a large anchor, a mermaid, as well as a large octopus (could it represent the Kraken from mythology?), as well as more symbols representing the outdoor, beach theme. This SS22 Menswear collection also sees the reemergence of the Prada swim shorts, which are short, retro-wallpaper print shorts, typically detailed with a 70s-like print. These shorts bring fourth a 5 inch seam that only the bravest of men can bear on their next vacation escape.

Personally, my favorite piece from the runway show is the yellow oversized leather jacket, which can be found as look number 14/39 on the Prada website (https://www.prada.com/us/en/pradasphere/fashion-shows/2022/ss-menswear.html?page=5). The fit of the jacket is phenomenal, with broad, rounded shoulders accented by a circled pattern of stitching, bringing a strong look to the jackets design. The jacket includes zippering along the sleeves, chest and sides for pockets/venting that bring a more elegant, busy design against the shiny yellow leather. The jacket can be dressed up or worn casual, best for being the staple piece of the outfit based on the unique shade of the leather.

The collaboration of Raf Simons tailoring and explicit style stamped with Miuccia Pradas iconic prints comes alive in this SS 2022 collection, bringing a new sense of style for the upcoming summer.
