Thinking about what @why-its-kai suggested that Q never took away Riker's powers and used that situation to go looking for Picard ar the end of STP S3 would be interesting.
I'm sure I'm not the only one here thinking this, but given that Patrick Stewart said that Picard doesn't die at the end of STP, but it's a situation "he could come back from", it all just feels as if he is going to be separated from his crew and friends. Stewart also said that the ending was both "unconventional " and "satisfying."
Thinking along the lines of @why-its-kai , what if Picard has to sacrifice himself in the end to save everyone. People mourn, pour a drink in his honor, etc.
Picard is lost somewhere, perhaps in another dimension or a crack in time.
What if Q, who's somehow returned, tells Riker that he can help find Picard, and that Riker *will need a captain, or first officer to help them find Picard*.
This is where Riker and Q have this conversation that people speak of and JDL says is his favorite scene, according to some. Q could profess his love for Picard and how he wants to help. He needs Riker's powers to help him because all of the other Qs are dead from this mystery illness, and it takes two or more Qs to fix the problem.
So, Q ends up joining the Enterprise crew after all! Q gets his wish!
And everyone ventures into a great unknown to find Picard, and if they encounter strange adventures along the way, well, there you go.
The exploration does not end, and Q is on a quest to find his favorite being in all the Universe.
That would be a cool ending!
