oo i like ur little thought on that writing advice. any other advice you have? perhaps if any, an advice you think isn’t the best yet very popular?

aaa sorry this took me some time to respond to! i wanted to do a lil research to remind myself of advice i Hate slkj

for general tips that i like, i made this post a little while ago, and i still stand by everything i said in it! 

as for popular advice i don’t like,,, honestly, i don’t know how popular some of these are, but i remember them being invoked frequently in high school english hh:

show, not tell taken to the extreme: as a general rule, it is better to show over tell ofc. but sometimes, you’ve just got to tell, you know? and that helps the moments you ‘show’ have an even stronger impact. it also stops the flow of a story from meandering (unless that’s an intentional choice). 

use as much descriptive language as possible: descriptive language is very important, but similar to the point above, it has to be balanced. to make descriptive language and analogies have a real impact, they need to be supported by the rest of the prose. not saying the rest of the prose has to be boring, but if there’s too much heavy language it can get quite arduous to read (and runs the risk of purple prose) 

literally any of those lists that say you ‘shouldn’t use these words’: the idea that you shouldn’t use certain words in your writing is so dumb to me? like of course you want to write nice-sounding prose, but i personally think it’s more important to be understandable? it’s all well and good to write something very beautiful, but if nobody knows what it’s saying (or if they have to refer to a dictionary for every second word), it’s kind of moot to me. of course, it depends on the target audience, but the point of writing and story-telling is to express something and have that understood; obfuscating that with unnecessarily complex words defeats the point imo. 

that’s probably all i wanted to say, because otherwise i tend to come across pretty solid advice! the important thing to remember is that there’s no ‘right way’ to write, and everyone should do what’s best for them and never feel like they’re a worse artist for it.
