One App to Rule Them All
Tumblr media
The time has finally come to pull the trigger and make our triumphant return to Zenplanner for ALL programs & workout tracking (except individualized programming via truecoach).
The ONLY real downside of this transition is that we’ll lose gifs... Though Zenplanner still has all the same leaderboard features, you can even like and comment (and emoji), and you can always throw a /giphy into slack and tell us how you really feel about the WOD (or ask any questions if planning to do something on your own - just tag @coach in slack!).
But in all seriousness, in the past month we’ve been utilizing both systems (from the back end) to finalize this decision - and it’s a no brainer. The Zenplanner features outlined below allow our coaches to be so much more engaged with you and your progressing results! You’ll no longer have to keep checking your phone for your last lift (or not being able to find it) just check the ‘faceboard’ TV & see (or ask a coach).
FAQ & features below; please give it a look over then contact [email protected] if you have any other questions, or tag @admin on slack :)
How do I Find the Workout?
Open up the Zenplanner mobile app & click your face / the menu on the top left > workouts!
From there use the drop-down to select the days program that you’re looking for (just like SugarWOD):
Tumblr media
What about all my prior / SW results!?
We in the process of cleaning up an export of all prior BENCHMARK (lifts primarily) to have them imported into Zenplanner :) Though if you’re feeling pro-active (and want more than just benchmark lifts) from the workout tab in Zenplanner click Library > and feel free to transfer any results over :)
You will NOT lose access to SugarWOD and all those results! You will default back to CrossFit.com as your home gym on Oct 20th when your subscription to SW fully expires.
ZP Feature: Faceboard Workout Results
Tumblr media
One of the top features that SugarWOD will likely never integrate, is the Faceboard for logging & checking prior results.
This feature is MASSIVE for coaches being able to help athletes pick the right weights, helping ensure you follow our programs as intended (see: linear progressions), and if you do - you get a beautiful little bar chart like in the example above :D
Moving forward, coaches will do their best (no promises) to log your primary lift / results - but it’ll be on the athletes to log their WOD results as well as any other notes to their lifting results.
ZP Feature: Track Private Training Results
Want to re-benchmark some lifts? Afraid to go heavy in class? Signup for one of our ‘cheap PT’ options (only available to monthly group class athletes) and benchmark your lifts under the watchful eye of a coach, and your coach can add your results for you - which will also show up on the faceboard for future reference in group class!
ZP Feature: Workout Notes for Athletes
Ok this is due to ZP lacking a feature (private coach notes) but we’ve decided we have NO issue with you guys seeing the notes about the days workout! So at the bottom of each workout we’ve edited our coach blurbs to be athlete friendly, so you can read & understand the intention behind the workout, recommended modifcations, and more :)
Still in Progress...
A few final items that are being updated (which is why we didn’t fully transfer earlier as planned - but it was time to pull the trigger)...
SW results being transferred to Zenplanner (as mentioned above)
Adding movement demo / links directly in Zenplanner (to make it easier for you to make up a missed workout / follow along during open gym, for now: www.rncty.ca/movements will have everything you need)
Athlete computers for easy access to check-in / log results / check results #moarscreens - but feel free to utilize the front desk computer for now on your way in/out :)
And... the return of the ‘Ongoing Leaderboard’:
Tumblr media
Screenshot from our prior ongoing leaderboard... it was an epic custom feature we had made for Zenplanner which we’re in the process of rebuilding. It automatically pulls scores from the last 30 days in Zenplanner - so you’ve got to show up consistently to stay at the top! More details coming soon...

The Final (shoe) Purge
Tumblr media
This weekend is your last chance to claim your shoes! All you have to do is put them back onto the shoe shelf and we’ll know they’re in use :)
Next week we will sort through & cleanup whatever shoes are left and then put them up for auction with all proceeds being donated somewhere amazing (probably special olympics). So if you’re in need of new lifts - don’t touch them yet!
If you’re unable to make it into the gym, please email [email protected] with which shoes are yours and we’ll put them aside for you (or get a friend to).
When placing your shoes back on the shelf, take a minute (and a sharpie) and add your initials or name ;)

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
Tumblr media
We will be staying open & regular schedule for the National Day for Truth & Reconciliation - but we’ll still be doing our part! We’ll be showing our support via the Downtown Eastside Women’s Center. An incredible organization that is utilized largely by unhoused indigenous women.
Tumblr media
For every orange shirt worn to class (or open gym) on Friday, Raincity athletics will donate $5.
We’re donating 100% of proceeds from our (remaining) orange shirts.
We’ll match any RAthlete donations made to the DEWC! (up to $500 total).
Shirts must be purchasd at the gym - so come in to grab one! Orange shirts will be tracked by coaches throughout the day (or tag is on IG and show us!), and forward donation receipts to [email protected] for us to track / match :)
For those who came for our Decolonization talk with Salia Joseph we know that throwing money at a problem won’t solve it (but it always helps) so we’re asking our community to continue to do the work, and read up on some of our prior posts that we’ve put out on Canada day with some steps YOU can take to be a part of the solution <3

VCMT (almost) Free Massages are Back!
Tumblr media
The Vancouver College of Massage therapy is back & doing (almost) free massages for Raincity members!
You now must bring $15 cash for your appointment (something they were apparently always supposed to charge but we managed to avoid for years) - and get 60 minutes with a VCMT massage student! The students are in their final stage before graduating as RMTs, so this is your best chance to give your body the TLC it loves without the price tag!
You can reserve directly via Zenplanner, which will use up a class - we will manually switch it over to not use a class - but if you’re on a limited membership and don’t want to tie a reservation up, you can reserve a free drop-in via the WEB app (instead of mobile app) htp://app.raincityathletics.ca
Please remember to bring $15 cash for VCMT when you come for your appointment!

Pauric: Benchmark Workout & Farewell Sat Sept 10th
Tumblr media
We’re sad to announce that another Raincity favorite is leaving the country :(
He first came in for a free [SC] class Dec of 2017, did a few drop-ins, then decided to do his OnRamp... and has attended 6 days / week (or more) basically every since! Which is how he also managed to hit his 1,000 class attendance just 2 weeks before leaving - earning himself a benchmark that we can all remember him by after he’s gone...
Come join us Saturday Sept 10th for his benchmark workout AND that night we’ll head to Johnnie Fax’s pub (at the end of terminal) to take all Pauric’s money on the pool table so he can’t afford to leave us...
New #RaincityBenchmark Pacing with Pauric
Tumblr media
Since Pauric is not only a beast on the machines, but one of the only members (possibly THE only member?) who actually listens to a coach when they talk about pacing... you better listen if you want to get a top score on his benchmark!

Raincity 3.0 Launch (finally!)
Tumblr media
Whatup team coach Thor here,
After a VERY long few months negotiating with major software companies, trying to switch softwares, switching back, moving to new payment providers and all kinds of other painfully boring back end stuff...
If you just want to know what’s going down next week you can skip to the info post here: https://www.raincityathletics.ca/blog/threepointoh
If you want to read my usual rambles & rants you can scrowll down :P
Raincity 3.0 is finally here!
First up I want to put out a huge THANK YOU to everyone who helped get this done, either by contributing OR just by putting up with me in the process. Many don’t know this, but one of the only reasons I can afford to own/run a gym the size of Raincity Athletics is because I don’t have to hire out so many little (but expensive) things; from the website, to facility & machine maintenance, and everything in between - it’s me at my 5 monitor home office setup clicking away to get things updated (or after hours in a tool belt). So a massive thank you to our community (and coaches) for putting up with me while we navigated our way out of a pandemic and into the Raincity Athletics I’ve always wanted to run...
What’s the big deal?
Raincity 3.0 and it’s varying levels of programs is the gym I’ve always wanted Raincity to be. Over the past 5+ years we had a ton of athletes doing individualized programming, which was pretty awesome - but COVID reminded me why I opened a gym in the first place; and it wasn’t so that people could come in by themselves and workout alone. It was because, as Coach Alexi said best ‘I just love a good fking group class’ - there’s nothing better!
The goal of Raincity 3.0 is to ensure all athletes have access to an affordable GROUP progam that will suit them and their goals, as opposed to every athlete paying MORE to have a (very similar) program written ‘just for them’. We will still continue to offer programming options, as it’s a crucial part of reaching specific goals, recovering from injuries, and more - but focusing on those options being ‘addons’ and not the central piece.
What’s happening in 3.0?
For the full breakdown please see the website article here: https://www.raincityathletics.ca/blog/threepointoh
Again, thanks for being a part of our community and I’m VERY excited to share our new and improved Raincity Athletics and getting back to providing you the community you love and that we all need to help us recover from the post COVID slumps <3

Raincity 3.0 - Update on the Updates
Tumblr media
This is an update from this post.
Hey team - Coach Thor here,
It’s been a helluva month! After 3+ months of software shopping, demos, and negotiating we had finally settled on our new ‘host’ and were super excited for some of the new features we were going to get with Triib... until about 3 weeks into setup, when we realized that from a back end perspective (payroll, management, etc) it was not going to be possible to keep Raincity operating at the capacity it does on the new software. SO we’ve officially had to make the call to ABORT the new software, and will instead be doing a full cleanup as we head into all our new programs & classes launching in September!
Also, it turns out we were lied to and as many of you have noticed, payment processing continued to work just fine through August (they just wanted to keep us on our toes I guess......). So we apologize for any inconvenience that may have caused!
What’s coming up?
Tumblr media
Regardless of the nightmare this process has been, I’m still VERY excited for everything launching in September! We’ll keep dropping more details, and getting things updates on the back end (and website), but here’s a sneak peak as well as a few quick questions answered...
What happened to the ACCESS blocks? They’re still in there! 90min blocks during class times and 2 hour blocks during the day. It just made the graphic look messy ;) The full schedule will be updated in Zenplanner in the coming days - for now ignore anything you see beyong Sept 1st!
What happened to the [FF] group classes Monday / Wednesday? Nothing! They got a name change :P The programming you are currently doing is exactly how it will operate in September! But by converting those classes to being a part of our [SC] program - we’ll lower the barrier of entry for others to join (will still require adeqaute barbell experience OR a 3 session OnRamp). The programming will be exactly how it is right now: Always a strength component focusing on Squats / Deadlifts / Pressing (and barbell) and then no barbell in the WODs but still getting that mixed modal functional HIIT!
What else is new?
NEW PROGRAM: The [FF] Functional Body is our entry-level mobility & stability program for those looking to add injury prevention and longevity in their training - we’ll still focus on strength work, but with more time spent on single joint and rehab/prehab type focus with low to moderate intensity conditioning (except Fridays).
NEW CLASSES:
[FF] Olympic Lifting classes at 7AM on Fridays w/ coach James
[FF] Throwdown - Saturday mornings at 8:30 AM (90 minutes) for athletes looking for the harder, heavier, and longer workouts with coach KatieN
[FF] Sport Competition Prep - Monday evenings, for athletes looking to work the higher / harder skill OR in preperation for upcoming Functional Fitness competitions with coach James.
SIMPLIFIED MEMBERSHIPS: We will not longer have different memberships for each program - instead they will all be ‘group class’ memberships and coaches will modify your program access based on what requirements you’ve met!
[FB] open to all athletes of every level (first class free - bring a friend!)
[SC] requires adequate experience and/or our 3 session [SC] OnRamp
[FF] requires adequate experience with Olympic Lifts and/or our 6 session [FF] OnRamp
4 WEEK CYCLES: You can read more about the programming format we’re shifting into HERE. With a full outline coming before the next block starts in Sept.

Raincity Barbell Club in House Interclub - Sept 25th
Tumblr media
The interclub is back, and this time better than ever!
Raincity Barbell Club is officiall a BC Weightlifting Association recognized club! And we need YOU to represent us to help us get you more gear!
Coaches James & Thor have been hard at work to get grants to help grow our weightlifting program - and the final stage before we can pickup a few (more) new sets of gear, is club members!
Registering as a BCWA athlete means when you complete the interclub event you will be officiall ranked & will allow you to compete in other sanctioned weightlifting events.
Athlete registration is $55 for the year, and we understand you may not be looking to compete again this year - so we’re going to help you out. Register as a BCWA athlete under Raincity Athletics prior to the interclub, and we’ll apply a $25 membership credit OR a free shirt & you’ll get to lift at the Interclub event for free!
Register as a BCWA athlete: https://bcweightlifting.ca/memberships
For non Raincity BCWA athletes there will be a $25 charge to take part in the interclub event - so you might as well register :)
Event registration will be live soon - but make sure to join the #athletes-barbell channel in slack for updates, join the [FF] Olympic Lifting classes to lead up to the event, and save the date!
Not interested in lifting but want to be involved? We need volunteers! Contact coach James if you’re interested in helping out.

Tumblr media
Sweat, Connect and Learn with Coach Sarah and Coach Katie on Sunday August 21st!
Sweat it out with Coach Katie as she leads you through a spicy team wod!
Connect with the Sweatworking Community, a group of health-minded humans who love to workout and learn, over yummy recovery drinks from sponsors Botanica Health and Team Gud.
Learn from sports nutritionist and naturopath doctor, Marieta Buse as she leads a discussion including what to eat to support your training, recovery, and performance.
Marieta explains, 'you can be eating all the healthy foods in the world, but if you don’t have the essentials in place, then it will inevitably be very difficult to maintain an optimal balance in your nutrition, recovery and ultimately, training. With my top 3 recommendations on what to eat before, during, and after training, your decisions around food will become more intuitive. You will get back to each training session quicker and fresher without having to sacrifice energy away from all your other aspects of life!'
If you want to learn about which small changes can have a big impact on your training, then this is a conversation you want to hear!
There will be lots of fun to be had, plenty of prizes to be won, and ample opportunities to learn!

Raincity 3.0 - Software Updates & Payment Processing Changes
As you know we’ve got some exciting changes coming down the pipeline for September! Some of those changes will begin kicking in through August (you can read about some of them here) while the full official launch will be September 1st, at which point we’ll be full transferring over to entirely new software as well #oneapptorulethemall
Tumblr media
Why the switch?
As many know, just before COVID Zenplanner got bought out by a bigger company, who also purchased SugarWOD. SugarWOD brought new breadth of life to our workout tracking - and was definitely a hit during COVID lockdowns since we could add videos, fist bumps and more - but after over 2 years, we’re still stuck fumbling between 2 separate apps (and I’m stuck paying for both).
On top of that, ~3 months ago we were notified by Zenplanner that we were being forced to move to their ‘in house payment processor’ with higher fees than what we currently have access to. Their new fees would create an additional cost of $500-900 / month - for no additional service, just fees. We were given 3 months to make the switch, or we would no longer be able to take payments via Zenplanner.
This was the final straw for me... so I began the hunt for new software and payment providers. Over the past 3 months I have had calls and done demos with just about every gym management software out there, and am excited for our transition to TRIIB, which we are in the process of setting up for a full transfer on Sept 1st!
TRIIB will allow us to continue to offer you all the same services and programs we currently do, but with everything in ONE APP, including individlualized or remote programming streams right alongside your group class programs :D
There’s just one (so far) downside...
No Payment Processing in August
Negotatiing with software and payment companies as a small business owner is a very time consuming nightmare... so although the process is finally 90% complete, we missed the deadline to get fully up and running and will no longer be able to process payments in Zenplanner as of August 1st.
I will send an email out directly to everyone via Zenplanner in the coming days (so please do not reply to this) but we will be requesting your permission to run your membership bills through a couple days early if possible.
If for ANY reason this does not work for you, please do not hesitate to reply to that email letting us know, and we won’t! In Aug we will do our best to collect & track payments in any way we can (etransfer, paypal, carrier pigeon, cash, hair transplants, whatever) or worst case we will just push your payment through for August on Sept 1st once everything is setup in Triib.
I apologize in advance for the hiccups I’m sure we’re going to face in the coming 4-5 weeks of transferring over (again, you guys won’t utilize TRIIB until Sept 1st so dont stress) - but I am VERY excited for everything the teams been working on to bring you in September - so I promise it’ll be worth it.
Thanks for your understanding! You’ll hear from me directly via zenplanner on or before the 29th requesting permission to push your payment through early, and we’ll keep dropping exciting updates in the coming weeks before the launch!

It’s time for testing week and to wrap up our final 12 week cycle in our [FF] Functional Fitness program!
Make sure to come by the Raincity 9th Birthday BBQ on Sunday to eat & fuel up for a big week of testing :D www.rncty.ca/bbq
Tumblr media
MONDAY: 1RM Front Squat & Max Pullups
TUESDAY: Clean Complex & Max Handstand Pushups
WEDNESDAY: 1RM Sumo Deadlift & Mixed modal OPEX tester
THURSDAY: 1RM Power Snatch
FRIDAY: Max Row / Ski / Bike
Next Programming Block
Based on your feedback, and in preperation for our full new programs launch in September - we will begin transitioning to our new programming method through August!
The below applies primarily to [FF] group classes as the major updates to the [SC] program and the introduction of our new [FB] Functional Body program will begin September.
[FF] Group Class Programming Updates
4 and 8 week blocks which will align across all programs
Mon - Thurs strength programs will hit all major muscle groups & are structured in a away to allow you to workout Mon - Thurs, followed by a rest day on Friday OR to come in Friday to make up a missed workout from the week
We will do more frequent and less intense testing - with % work being based more on effort than maxes
Mondays & Wednesdays
Focus on Powerlifting (squat / deadlift / press / etc)
Always includes a structured strength component and 8-15 minute WOD
Minimal to no barbell in ‘wods’ - lots of kettlebells, dumbbells, medicine balls, plyo boxes, etc.
Tuesdays & Thursdays
More ‘constantly varied’ workout duration, type, and movements
May include strength (olympic lifting, heavy complexes, etc) or skill component (muscle ups, handstand work, etc) or not
Strict leaderboard; No ‘run OR row OR ski’ options - everyone does the same
Rx / Scaled tracked on the whiteboard (and enforced on the leaderboard) w/ strict movement standards from coach
Fridays [SC]
Continues to be ‘rest / recover / makeup’ days where we encourage you to come in and make up any missed strength work from the week then join a Sweat class :)
Just Sweat classes will follow 4 week cycles
testing a specific time domain in week 1 (which can also be made up during open gym)
then utilizing that pace for the following 3 weeks of intervals
Saturdays
Continues [FF] Team & [SC] Solo WODs
The [SC] Solo wod will be ~20 minute amrap / solo versions of the days team WOD - followed by coach led mobility
Sundays [SC]
Bodybuilding style strength focusing on one primary muscle group (ie back, shoulders, etc) followed by a barbell free workout with sleds, battle ropes, etc.
We’ll drop the full outline of August’s block for you next week! For now, rest & eat up and let’s crush some PRs this week!

Summer Schedule Updates
Tumblr media
A few tweaks for the summer as well as to prepare for all new programs, classes, and schedules launching Sept 1st!
New [FF] Olympic Lifting Class
Fridays at 7AM with Coach James - starting August 5th!  (7AM Just Sweat class might get moved to 6AM)
2022 07 26 Update: Based on low summer attendance we are postponing this class launch to Sept
6AM - 9PM [FF/SPRT] Access
With an update in our insurance, we can now ensure our athletes have somewhere to workout at all times (more on that later).
On top of that, we will be removing [SPRT] and [FF] Access as seperate things, and instead there will be ~8 ‘ACCESS’ spots available all day to everyone in [FF] or [SPRT] programs. During peak times blocks will be 90 minutes and utilize platforms, SW corner Annex, and ‘cages’ on OG.
7AM Tues / Thurs [FF] Class Cancelled
This will be just for August while so many people are away on holidays! The 7AM [SC] class will have an increased capacity and the new programming will align with what’s being done in [FF]!
No-Show Cancellation Policy Update
We hate the current policy as much as you do - since it encourages you NOT to register for classes... as things start to get busier again, we don’t want to have to turn anyone away!
So because of that, and based on the survey results, we will be going back to our pre-covid cancellation policy:
You can cancel up to 2 hours prior to class start
You will only be charged for the no-show if the class was fully booked
In order to ‘get the class back’ you must reply to the email that you will recieve 1 hour after the class ends.
You may email / slack us prior to let us know - but we will not remove you until you reply to that email
