In this talk from the Summer 2022 edition of the Herodotus Helpline, Dr Ruobing Xian (Fudan) explores the complex account of the Crotonian doctor Democedes in Book 3 of Herodotus' 'Histories'. Dr Xian's talk considers key episodes such as Democedes' advice to the Persian king Darius via his wife Atossa (3.134), and the connections between Democedes and the Egyptian eye-doctor selected by Amasis to be sent to Cyrus (Hdt. 3.1).
