ok so csa is a big part of Leandro/Penitente's childhood, and I don't plan on writing him being abused because 1. I can't stomach it and 2. It feels better for me to inform the reader in little ways how being drugged and r-ped by his aunt has affected his relationship with alcohol, love, bodily autonomy, and parenthood

It will only be mentioned that it did happen to him when his mom tries to prevent him from being excommunicated from the cult by bringing it up to Aciano (ok ok, long story, but his friend Huli finds out in the worst way possible after 10+ years, and it's not just him she abused, and she attempts to shoot his aunt, the bullet wound wasn't fatal, and he helps her try to hide after the attempt goes awry) The letter is the first confirmation to the reader that this it was definitively csa and not anything else other characters have speculated.

In a last ditch effort to prevent his exile, the mom brings up what his aunt did to him, but only to claim he's insane. She says he's unfit to care for himself, and it would be better if he was forgiven and made to live with her "since he's mentally still a child"

Since Huli is in a Mother Superior type position at the convent, she also uses that to claim he developed an oedipal complex because of his aunt... it's gonna suck so bad... also the cult leader already knew about the csa. Csa and religious abuse go hand in hand, you know. It's all for naught.

Toyang doesn't know any of these people, so her main take-away from Siyon-Elissa's letter is "cultists are insane, I need to get outta here"

(trying to explain leandro and claudio) so like imagine if a father figure mistreated his lover's child, but in neglecting him and forcing him to study abroad, gave him the tools, the anger, and drive to lie and maneuver his way into acquiring his goals, plus he's one of the only people who truly know this father figure, because he knows the full extent to his viciousness. and after returning home, wants everyone to know what he knows.

now this same father figure finally has a legitimate child with his lover, educates him and teaches him about the higher arts, but essentially creates a playground where the son thinks he's a king when he's playing with glass horses. and how is the second born gonna prove himself? he needs to kill his half-brother
