“The Snatchabook” by Helen and Thomas Docherty is a delightful, fun, and clever book about a bunny named Eliza Brown who lives in “Burrow Down”. In the story, books mysteriously disappear during bedtime story time. When Eliza finally learns that a tiny Snatchabook has been stealing her and her friends books, she asks him why he is doing such a thing. The Snachabook was upset because he didn’t have a mom or dad to read her books every night, which is why he goes around stealing books and not behaving “right”. Eliza then tells her friends about Snachabook’s dilemma, and he is then invited to their bedrooms to hear bedtime stories at night.
The book is intriguing for many reasons. The first is the way the story develops around a mystery - who is stealing all the books? The second is that the story has rhyming language, which is helpful for building phonemic awareness. An example of this rhyming is, “Her curtains opened, just a chink. She barely had a chance to blink. Her storybook disappeared! Eliza found that very weird.” Another reason this story is clever is that it normalizes the idea of a nighttime reading routine. It can be inferred by reading the book that for the members of “Burrow Down”, reading at night with loved ones is a very special and sacred time. This could be a good moment of connection with students to see who is being read to at home, how often, and perhaps who in their family is participating in these moments.
