Bellamy Is The Abusive One, Not Octavia: A Rant/Meta
Thereā€™s two main ā€œreasonsā€ that people give when they claim that Octavia is abusive. That she beats up Bellamy after Lincolnā€™s murder, and that she has him put in The Fighting Pits.
Letā€™s start with the old discourse; Bellamy did get Lincoln killed, not Octavia. Bellamy is the person who got Pike into power, the person who stood by him even after seeing + being told multiple times by people he supposedly cares about that Pike was instituting facism and going to get everyone killed. Bellamy knowingly decided to be a Nazi even though he had other options and was aware of them. And, no, Nazi is not an exaggeration, Bellamy was 100% willing to wipe out an entire race just for being that race including putting them in concentration camp-like conditions to die.
Octavia is not at fault just because she didnā€™t accept Bellamyā€™s last minute ā€œhelpā€, he had given her absolutely no reason to trust him so itā€™s not her fault she didnā€™t. If my brother was fhe right-hand man of a fascist leader then I wouldnā€™t have trusted him that after he belittled my concerns several times and stopped me from escaping, heā€™ll get my boyfriend out of the camp he put him in to begin with. Octavia had no obligation to trust Bellamy after he did everything in his power to destroy her trust.
So, yes, Octavia beats up Bellamy. If I had just saw and heard the love of my life be murdered at the hands of the man that my own brother knowingly put in power then I probably would beat him up to. Especially if my brother had already been abusing me my whole life.
Side note: Let me also just point out that Bellamy was never adequately redeemed for that whole being a Nazi thing, everyone just pretended it never happened. Octavia herself even calls him out ā€œYou didnā€™t turn on Pike because you thought what he was doing to the grounders was wrong.ā€ and he AGREES. Bellamy šŸ‘ never šŸ‘ earned šŸ‘ redemption, because men in this show donā€™t need to be held accountable for their actions while women (mainly Octavia and Clarke) have to supplicate themselves to men and be dragged through the dirt mercilessly for every wrong breath they take.
The Fighting Pit issue is an even weaker example because Octavia didnā€™t put Bellamy in there because she was angry or wanted to (although she had every right to be) she did it because Bellamy publicly broke several laws and she would have completely undermined her own authority (and given special treatment, making her a poor leader) if she let him get away with treason, child endangerment, murder, and attempted assassination. Bellamy getting put in the fighting pit was a consequence of his own actions, one that he was well aware of. Octavia wasnā€™t being abusive, she was being a fair leader.
Now that that BS is out of the way, hereā€™s a list of why Bellamy is abusive to Octavia:
1.) Bellamy has had all of the power in their relationship from day one. Octavia was literally trapped in a room and only able to interact with two people for sixteen years, Bellamy came and went as he pleased. Octavia was essentially a captive, she couldnā€™t have possibly been more powerless during the entire time their relationship was developing. Then when they get on the ground, Bellamy is almost instantly put in a position of power which he uses to isolate and control Octavia. Thereā€™s also the age difference, I think a lot of people forget that Bellamy is way older than all the other Skaikru. Bellamy is 23 at the start of the show and everyone else is under 18 (except Raven is 18). So, weā€™re talking about a barely 17-year-old girl, one who grew up extremely isolated so is even more immature than most kids her age, and a 23-year-old man who lived most of his life relatively normally.
The power difference entirely favors Bellamy. Octavia has no power over him at all pre-Blodreina (which weā€™ll get to that) so the idea that she could possibly abuse Bellamy is pretty absurd. Abuse is a habitual pattern of controlling and belittling behavior by someone with more (actual or perceived) power over another, Octavia had no power over Bellamy at all; Bellamy had an insane amount of power over her that he constantly abuses to isolate and control her.
2.) Bellamy supposedly goes to the ground to ā€œprotectā€ Octavia but his means of doing so are abusive and controlling. In season 1 alone; Bellamy uses physical intimidation and manhandling against Octavia several times, he terrorizes a harmless teenager (remember how heā€™s a grown ass adult? Yikes...) to keep him away from Octavia who was enjoying his company, then he tortures a man in front of her while she begs him to stop because he doesnā€™t care about her opinions (more in 4) and heā€™s the leader of The 100 so he can.
3.) The whole ā€œmy sister, my responsibilityā€ thing that everyone thinks is so cute? Yeah, thatā€™s emotional abuse. A figure of authority repeating to a child that they are a burden for existing is disgusting and so, so harmful. That phrase is a reinforcement of the more vicious things Bellamy has said ā€œMom was floated for having you, sheā€™s dead because youā€™re alive!ā€ and ā€œMy life ended the day you were born!ā€
4.) Bellamy is constantly belittling, dismissing, and patronizing all of Octaviaā€™s opinions and identity.
ā€œYou turned this place into a story from your childhood. I mean, the red queen? Itā€™s a joke.ā€
Iā€™m not saying that Blodreina was a positive identity for Octavia, but it was something she was forced (remember, she didnā€™t seek power like Bellamy and Clarke did) to become to survive. Octavia was a mentally ill teenage girl with very limited exposure to the world who has never had any power in her entire life, and suddenly she was responsible for saving the human race. How fucking dare Bellamy mock her for basing her leadership off of stories WHAT THE HELL ELSE WOULD SHE BASE IT OF OFF???
Bellamy had a job and a life on The Arc, Octavia never left her room and had no way of seeing the outside world except through stories. She has literally no reference for ruling, or anything else, except those stories and her brief time with the Grounders. Fuck you and your privilege, Bellamy.
On top of that, Octavia actually did save the human race. That ā€œjokeā€ kept humanity alive.
ā€œIt is time to stop playing Grounder before you get yourself hurt.ā€
Yes, how dare she identify with the only people who have ever accepted her and treated her like a human being. How about you stop ā€œplayingā€ Nazi before you get us everyone killed. Seriously, Octavia is not allowed to disagree with Bellamy without him grabbing her arm and talking down to her like sheā€™s a toddler throwing a tantrum.
5.) As soon as Octavia is in a position of power, one she didnā€™t even ask for, Bellamyā€™s abuse gets progressively crueler because heā€™s trying to regain control. He starts actively using Octaviaā€™s mental illness against her and literally suicide baits her several times.
There is NO excuse. None at all. To tell someone who is severely mentally ill, traumatized, and an active suicide risk that ā€œI wish you were deadā€ and ā€œyouā€™re already deadā€. Trying to push someone to suicide and using someoneā€™s mental illness to hurt them, let alone your own sister, is one of the most evil things you can do. The fact that so much of the fandom ignores this genuinely makes me sick.
Bellamy chooses those words because he knows that is what will hurt Octavia the most and he wants to hurt her. Bellamy has heard Octavia say that sheā€™s already dead when sheā€™s at her lowest points, he knows that those are the words that haunt her and drive her to want to kill herself, and thatā€™s why he uses them as a weapon. Notice that he says them multiple times and at very purposeful times, this is not something he yelled once when he was angry; we see him calmly make the choice to say these things to her several times when he is losing control and wants to break her back down to the helpless little girl who was always happy to see him because of her Stockholm Syndrome.
6.) I think trying to MURDER Octavia THREE FUCKING TIMES deserves its own point. Bellamy poisons Octavia, he suicide baits her and letā€™s her go through with it (someone else stops her, Bellamy makes no move to), and then he leaves her to die with a lovely extra ā€œMy sister is deadā€ for the road.
7.) Octavia spends most of season 6 groveling and trying to ā€œearnā€ back Bellamyā€™s love and we see clearly that ā€œearningā€ Bellamyā€™s love means being utterly powerless and subservient. Bellamy loved Octavia when she was a captive little girl but suddenly he canā€™t produce an ounce of human decency towards her? And donā€™t give me some ā€œbut sheā€™s Blodreinaā€ like Mr. Nazi has any room to judge Octavia for becoming a dictator out of desperation when she didnā€™t know what else to do and she was forced in a very, very difficult leadership position that she never wanted and all of humanity relied on.
My point is basically that Bellamyā€™s love is conditional, he holds it over Octaviaā€™s head like a fucking dog treat. He wants ā€œhis sisterā€ back but what does that mean? He wants back the scared little girl who couldnā€™t leave one room and was entirely dependent on him. Itā€™s Octavia having autonomy that Bellamy hates, not her being ā€œevilā€ because Bellamy is 500x as evil as Octavia and I will die on that hill. Youā€™re telling me that Bellamy of all people is soooo upset that his sister was forced to kill some people in the context of war and keeping humanity alive? As if Bellamy isnā€™t a mass murderer who has killed way more people for way less. Give me a fucking break. ā€œOctavia is deadā€ because Bellamyā€™s victim is dead and he canā€™t handle that.
But, please, do tell me again how two isolated incidents over six years apart from each other that are both the direct consequences of Bellamyā€™s autonomous choices make Octavia ā€œeMoTiOnAllY AbUsIvE tO pOoR WitTlE BeLlā€.

Rika rant part 2 ( a more organized and in depth rant) since this fandom doesnā€™t know how to act right.
Idk why the fuck we still arguing this but spoilers undercut.
Note that this rant is written by someone who actually likes Rika, but is so over everything about her.Ā
If Rika had been a hot male, nobody would hate Rika.
Now, I wonā€™t say that this is a bad argument. But it does insult the intelligence of those who have legitimate reasons to not like her. I use this argument myself if I feel like people only dislike her because sheā€™s just the girl to hate when you have a crush on that really hot guy who likes her, being V. many people use this argument because of the sexism in other otome fandoms like Voltage. Like when the MC is being bashed for being clumsy, ditsy, dense-- while they think itā€™s cute and endearing when a romanceble guy has those traits.
Letā€™s flip the genders now. V is a woman, and Rika is a man. Just imagine all the bad things male Rika did to female V and see if you would still like Rika any better. Female V sacrificed the one thing she loves to do in the name of love, in hopes that she could save a broken man. Male Rika tosses her away the second female V disagrees with him. Male Rika broke apart two siblings that loved each other in order to progress with his diabolical plans. Male Rika injured his fiance physically and made it so that she wouldnā€™t even dare tell her friends what was going on. Because she still seeā€™s the good in him and doesnā€™t want anyone to misunderstand.Ā
Let that sink in, and get back to me if you feel differently.
If people hate Rika because sheā€™s a woman, then how does that explain why people like Jaehee so much?Ā
The fanbase for Jaehee is enough to throw that argument out of the window, because that just goes to prove that yes, it is true that in a lot of fandoms, itā€™s easier to hate a woman for things sheā€™s done. But in this case? When weā€™ve got one woman who is problematic and hasnā€™t hurt anyone, and another woman who brainwashed and killed people in the name of peace? Do you seriously think that MM fans are going to hate the both of them even though one is clearly worse than the other, just because they both share the same gender? Yā€™all dumb as hell if you use that argument knowing damn well that if people hate RIka for being a woman, then Jaehee would have no fans either.
Oh, but Unknown/Saeran has killed people too, but people seem to find it hot rather than abusive.
Iā€™m not a fan of Saeran, so that argument canā€™t be used against me. But in his defense, look at 707ā€²s route. Look at how they grew up. Saeran was actually pure, unproblematic, and innocent. All of the shit with him started when Rika lied to Seven, saying that sheā€™d protect him, when in reality she meant to use his brother to brainwash him and convince him that Seven didnā€™t love him and abandoned him. In other words, Saeran became the way he is because Rika brought him into her sick plans. Whatā€™s Rikaā€™s excuse for being who she is other than mental illness?Ā
V helped Rika and did bad things too! Why do people feel bad for him and not her?
In my first rant, I already expressed that V annoyed THE FUCK out of me and did some things that I felt was really sketchy and questionable. It was hard to trust him. But he did those things because he had no choice to if he was going to save Rika, because Rika had put him on this all mighty pedestal, that V would be her savior. And when Rika found out that V couldnā€™t fix her depression, what did she do? She broke up with him and started a cult. The difference between the things that V did and the things that Rika did, is that V deadass thought he could save the love of his life and didnā€™t want anybody to think badly of her if he told the RFA the truth. And Rika killed and brainwashed people in order to make herself feel better about her savior complex. Nobody fucking said V didnā€™t do anything wrong, itā€™s just that he didnā€™t do the shit he did because he supported her, he did it because asĀ ā€œher sunā€ Rika pressured him to think that it was his job to save her. V lied to his friends, he made constant excuses, and as a result that also put the MC in danger in some cases. V had a very poor method of execution, and I hated that he didnā€™t do anything about Saeran being brainwashed by Rika. he promised Seven heā€™d look out for his brother and Seven trusted this man. Though who does this all go back to at the end of the day? Rika. Because V hadnā€™t done any of the things he did had it not been for the very thought that he could save her, and he would have never thought that if RIka hadnā€™t instilled the idea that V was the only person that could do that. The bad things everyone else did started all from her.
People hate Rika for being abusive, but Jumin was--
NAH NAH NAH NAH STOP RIGHT THERE DONā€™T BRING HIM INTO THIS
I donā€™t condone Juminā€™s behavior towards the MC when his cat went missing and he would not allow her to go home. But to be frank, in a lot of his bad endings, itā€™s been proven that she was safer at his pent house anyways. And what exactly does she need to go home for...? She has the fucking emails on her phone. But although Jumin shouldnā€™t have projected his feelings about his missing cat towards the MC, instead of seeing her as her own person (which he does at the end so donā€™t get it fucked up) that was Juminā€™s mistake that he made as a human being. Yes, he kept her in his house. But he never put his hands on her, he never forced this idea that she had to save him from his underlying issues, even in his bad endings, when she leaves, he actually wants her to be safe and happy. Now, was Jumin overstepping his boundaries? Yes. But was he actually being abusive? Fuck no. Yā€™all smoking dick if you think that. Jumin has done things that may be commonly found in what other abusive people do, but heā€™s never went as far as to actually doing something abusive or manipulative towards the people he loved. LIKE R I K A.
But in Juminā€™s bad ending--
Ah, yes. The infamous 50 shades of Han ending of mystic messenger. I remember having to take a fucking shower after reading it because I was utterly disgusted. Letā€™s me just take a moment to say that even in that particular ending, the MC is the one who wanted to bring out that side of him. She basically consented to being treated the way she is in that ending. Is it healthy? Fuck no itā€™s not. Whyā€™d yā€™all think I had to shower? But going as far as to say he was abusive in even that ending is ridiculous because BDSM involves two consenting parties. Jumin did not manipulate her into being okay with how he treats her in that ending, the MC asked him to, and he even asked if she was sure about that. So even outside of the canon endings, Jumin doesnā€™t technically do anything that counts as abuse.Ā
But even if it did count as abuse, Jumin didnā€™t tear a family apart, hit his spouse, or start a cult. Heā€™s not even comparable to Rika. Itā€™s okay to not like Jumin if his behaviors trigger something that hurts you and makes you feel like you canā€™t enjoy his route because of it. I totally get that, but to outright call him abusive and ignore Rikaā€™s abuse just contradicts everything.Ā
Now, I will say this.
Rika is someone that I feel like has a very big heart. She doesnā€™t have bad intentions, but that does not excuse the fact that she took away Saeranā€™s only real family away from him and painted his brother out as the bad guy just so she could use him for her plans. I think that Rika does care about people to a certain extent. Sheā€™s like the perfect girl that everyone loves, and then one day she just lost it. It happens to people even in real life. I think she held in too much to the point where she couldnā€™t take it, and I was heart broken to see that happen to her. In the secret endings, I was happy to know that she was getting treatment for her illness, but I felt like being sent away to Alaska was just being nice to her. She should have been in jail. People are saying that the fandom treats V better than Rika just because Rika is a girl, and V is a hot guy, but what about the way the story was written? With all of the things sheā€™s done, she gets sent safely to another place, and V dies even though he didnā€™t do anything nearly as bad? And the fact that Vā€™s death is written off as suicide as well, Seriously? Did yā€™all not even think about that? Rikaā€™s downfall broke me, but I still felt like she deserved to be truly punished. Thatā€™s why I said Iā€™m over the guys in Mystic Messenger going allĀ ā€œpoor Rikaā€ all the time, they gave Rika help but gave V hate. And that itself was also Rikaā€™s fault too.Ā
Again, flip the genders. Female V dies and has her death written off as suicide, while Male Rika gets to hide in Alaska to get treated when he should have been treated for his illness from the start. Female V gets all of the blame from her friends, even in her death, while her crazy ex gets to be patted on the back and told that everything is gonna be okay.
Well, itā€™s not okay. I wanted both Rika and V to be happy, not necessarily happy together, But happy. The only person I felt that got what they truly deserved in the end was Saeran, and thank god for that.
