I was wondering, what are some of your favorite animes aside from fruits basket?
Anon, this is exactly the ask I needed. Thank you. And as a heads up: good characters and writing are things I prize above everything else when it comes to storytelling. (I also tend to like fantasy elements) So I’ll probably keep mentioning the good characters or character development, because that is what I notice the most in my content. But let’s jump in:
Tumblr media
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is a fantasy shonen action series, and it manages to have a fully realized and unique world and magic system, an incredibly structured and written plot, phenomenal characters that I could write sonnets over, with a fantastic voice cast and animation. It’s a story of how two brothers’ devotion to each other and doing right by the people around them gets in the way of political and military agendas to the point of changing their world. It’s my favorite piece of fiction. (For reference, Fruits Basket ranks fourth on my list of favorite fiction)
Tumblr media
Yona of the Dawn (or Akatsuki no Yona) is a historical fantasy romance that pulls no punches with it’s incredible characters and their legendary development. We see our main character, Yona, go from a spoiled princess with scarce a bad day in sight to a fugitive on the run from who should have been her allies. Yona’s development into a wise and powerful ruler is worth the price of admission alone, and she’s just ONE of the incredibly complex people to meet, know, and love in this anime. (Only one season, and I’d DEFINITELY recommend reading the manga. I have a sideblog devoted to my love of Yona.) Yona of the Dawn is my second favorite piece of fiction, and that position is likely to change as the story is still ongoing, and it looks like the story’s about to wrap up, so now’s a great time to jump in!
Tumblr media
Your Name (or Kimi no Na Wa) is an anime film and it’s one of the best made anime of all time. The ART. The STORY. The PLOT. Sure, you go in thinking you’re getting a funky body-swapping rom com. But you stay for the emotionally poignant story that dives deep into some unexpected themes and twists that I for one didn’t see coming.
Tumblr media
Avatar The Last Airbender is one of the best pieces of art ever put on television. Just… yes. The world and the characters and the beautiful story of the horrors of war and people.
Tumblr media
Ouran High School Host Club is a comedy about the kids of Japan’s wealthiest families bringing a working class girl (they call her a “commoner” because they’re that out of touch lol) into their inner group. And instead of falling in love with all of the boys, she’s absolutely roasts them all the time and they all end up falling over themselves trying to get her attention. (With varying degrees of success). I STILL laugh at the antics these punks get up to, and still get misty when the heavier subjects are brought up. Ouran’s story is entirely character-driven. And these characters are worth the trip.
Tumblr media
Anohana is an 11 episode anime that will make you laugh and will actually make you sob, leaving your emotions and heart raw. This anime deals a lot with the necessity of catharsis, and has some of the best and most concisely-told character arcs ever.
Tumblr media
The Promised Neverland is a horror anime that I, a self-proclaimed scaredy-cat, can’t get enough of. The writer of this is a master of balancing tension, and also with not cheating in order to make big payoffs worth it. Not finished with this one, but great art and good story equals a rec from meee!
Tumblr media
My Hero Academia (or Boku no Hero Academia) is an action shonen series about kids with super powers called quirks going to high school as they train to be heroes. The action is great, the storytelling inventive, and the characters really are THAT good. It’s popular for a reason.
Tumblr media
Yuri on Ice! Is! So! Good! It’s an ice skating sports anime that is beautiful and soulful and very gay. And the gayness is canon! With a happy ending! Like…. It’s so good. And worth a watch. (It’s not a lengthy series so a binge won’t take long!) I’m so happy this series exists.
Tumblr media
Snow White With the Red Hair (or Akagami no Shirayuki-Hime) starts on a strong start and just gets better. The art in this anime is incredible, and it stars a smart, inventive heroine who is powerful and independent without needing to also be a competent warrior (tho there is one of those, her name is Kiki, and I love her the MOST). It’s a historical romance, but literally every character is treated with respect, and it’s just a very happy making anime.

Okay, attempt number 2! Naru sets down another gift out in the open and scrambles to hide somewhere that she can lie in wait for someone to pick it up and open it.
What is it? A trap. When you open the box, it sets off a dozen party poppers at the same time, making a loud noise and getting confetti everywhere! What a devious plan!
Though, she may have forgotten to properly address the gift. Hopefully "birdy girl" is the first to find it.
Unfortunately for the strange girl, Tsubasa was not the first one to find it.
Hime quirked an eyebrow as she picked up the suspicious box— a move that she of all people should have thought better of— and took a good few seconds to inspect it.
“The heck is this?” This weird box appeared to be some sort of present but there was no indication of who it was intended for. She slowly opened the lid—
BANG!
“KYAH!” Hime screamed, dropping the box as she was assaulted by confetti. Confetti which got everywhere! The loud noise was bothersome but not as big of a crime as the cursed paper ruining Hime’s current outfit! After the shock wore off, Hime began to fume.
“When I get my hands on whoever did this, I’ll—!” They’d pay for this injustice!

"I am literally a princess. If my partner doesn't treat me with the respect I deserve, then what's the point?" Hime had her priorities.

"It's apparently National Princess Day so today is my day! No complaining about my romantic dramas is allowed, Red!" Hime stared at said formerly evil god as she declared this.

“Oi. How dare you end things like that! Do you seriously expect me to wait until July to see how everything ends?!” Hime screamed at the television. It seemed the last episode of her latest romantic drama didn’t end so well.

“What’s wrong with wanting true love? A girl can be a competent warrior and want romance at the same time; I think I’m living proof of that!” Hime said, folding her arms.

“Can God do anything right?” Hime questioned in a huff. “He can’t cook, he can’t handle technology, and worst of all… he can’t read the room to save his life! Don’t you know how long it took for Ribbon and I to teach him how to use a printer?! That’s two hours of my life I’ll never get back!”

“Honestly, I think I have gotten too used to the world nearly ending on a yearly basis,” Hime mused.
“Yeah, it’s almost like the holiday season is Christmas, then New Years, followed by the apocalypse,” Tsubasa added, frowning. Were they really that desensitized by the tenth or so time their enemies nearly ended the world?

“Boba day!”
Tumblr media
“Boba day? According to some people on the dash, it’s--” Hime stopped herself. How old was this little girl with pink hair again?
Tumblr media
“Yes, it’s Boba day! Let’s all get some bubble tea to celebrate!” It was better than wallowing in despair over the assets they didn’t have, anyway!

Tumblr media
"I wouldn't call myself that at all! I'm sure Megumi-chan would be getting the same results I do! I'm not that special, after all!"

"Somehow I doubt that."
